Eid in my childhood was a full of excitement and warmth, filled with laughter. The day would begin early, the house already alive with the rustling noise from the kitchen, the air thick with the aroma of my ammur ranna. Even before my eyes were fully open, I could feel Eid had arrived. The breeze used to be different on Eid.
One of my greatest joys was choosing my outfit for the day. There was a fresh set for each day of Eid. A privilege, a luxury I hadn’t quite grasped back then. Once dressed in my best, with matching clips and a purse to stack the saalamies, I would rush to greet my parents with salaams. Ammu would always feed us something light before we starter the day.
Our first stop was always 4 Taala, the family’s central gathering place. It was an unspoken tradition. Everyone, no matter where they had started, would eventually find themselves there. Paying salaams to Boroammu and Boroabbu, awaiting our first salaami. The old building, with its mosaic staircases and the wooden railings (our slides), us hopping around each floor to greet everyone, it all felt like the beating heart of our Eid celebrations.
From there, we would make our way to Kaka and Kaki’s house, where the melody of chirping birds greeted us even before the door opened. Kakar basha had an aviary in theor balcony. It wasy favourite corner of their home. I've spent numerous hours of my life just admiring the love birds.
Soon all the cousins would unite under the roof. Now a bustling, giggling mass, would pile into a microbus, boroabbu noah, ready to embark on a day of house hopping. With seven fuppus to visit, each home held its own charm, its own signature Eider khabar laid out in preparation for our arrival. Borofuppi was an exception though. She was the one who would visit us with the children and grandchildren. I thought it to be a badass move. Coming from Dhaka to Narayanganj, with her family to meet us, ditching all the traditions.
It was an unspoken rule that we would have our main meal at Hena Fuppi’s house. She and Butta (her nickname was Beauty but we called her Butta idky) would insist on feeding us by hand, making sure no one left hungry. Each fuppi's home had its own charm. The alleyways leading to them was an adventure if its own, especially hena fuppi's house. The goli that led to her door was a narrow alleyway lined with old dusty rusty doors, some slightly ajar. We would sneak and peak a little while crossing the goli. Take a look at the different lives each door kept hidden. It was a scene straight out of a vintage sepia movie. We would run, jump, hop and dance our way to her door. Munnu and Mina Fuppi’s house was fun as well with its five floors full of family to greet. My cheeks used to hurt with all the smiling and nodding. Boumoni’s floor ha a special memory, that’s where I watched Harry Potter for the first time, with little Azim toddling around. That too on Eid. Munnu's home was adorned with bidishi toys, and she ALWAYS had bidishi chocolates in her house. So we used to keep the best for the last. So we can spend most time there.
One of the best parts of Eid as a child in a big family was the endless saalaami. We would collect crisp bills from relatives throughout the day, slipping them into pockets and mini purses. At night, we would excitedly count our earnings. Once, I managed to save up 30 k. Never felt so rich in life.
Amongst all the fuppies, laal fuppi was the most chill. We used to call her laal fuppi because her tongue used to be laal. She loves paan, you see. She's chill, because she never forced fed us or anything. She knew we had a long list of houses to hop around. So she made space, space in our hearts and our tummy.
Remember how long Eid days used to feel back then? Sometimes, I can't wrap my head around it. How did we manage to visit so many homes, greet so many people, and still have time for mischief and laughter? It feels like an impossible feat now, like a chapter from a storybook too whimsical to be real.
Our Eid would never be complete without visiting Chotonanu and Boronanu. After making the rounds to all our fuppis, my siblings and I would head to nanubari in the evening or night. And later at our khala's. We knew a swarm of little brats, eager and restless awaited our arrival. On some gracious occasions dadubari cousins would tag along as well.
It is indeed a privilege to have a nanubari as mine. A bari filled with selfless souls, people who never once let out an uff at our antics. And antics, we had plenty. We were a band of little rascals, untamed and fearless.I still remember the day someone, one particularly fazil, thought swinging from Boromama’s chandelier would be the ultimate thrill. A part of it came down with him. Another day, it was the curtain rack’s turn to fall victim to our jonglir moto karbar. We acted like spoilt brats at our nanubari ngl.
We had an uthaan (I've already rambles about our precious uthaan previously. Id give anything to go back to that uthaan) initially which was replaced by two rooftops. Boronanu had rules. He would lock the roof after shondhar azaan. But the fazil er dol would squeeze in through the holes of the iron gate to enter the chhad. We had mudir dokan right beside nanubasha. The amount of cocola chocolate gems we've had in the name of nana. When the dokaandar asked for money, we would say, baakir khataye nanar naam likhe den. He would giggle as well at our mischief. May Allah forgive us. May Allah grant nana jannahtul ferdous.
Eid is when nostalgia consumes me the most. I miss everyone I’ve lost. Too many names from this list of people now exist only in memory. I wish I had known, back then, how precious those moments were. I wish I had taken more initiative, held on tighter, been more present instead of simply floating through time. But childhood doesn’t grant us that wisdom. Does it?

A sublime experience!!!!!
Oh my word you won't believe what I've been listening to for the past 3 hours and what's been going through my mind. Truly an other worldly experience. Oh ya... its 3AM😛. Mixing totally different film styles, actors, singers, choreographers and much more of BOLLYWOOD. The best and biggest film industry in the world!! It started off with billo rani, then off to yummy from JB... the other one hehe... then to laal ishq and about 100 more from the likes of Kuch kuch, don, salaam e ishq, desi boyz and the list goes on. Absolutely sublime experience. Highly recommended to help deal with stresses during this tough covid19 period. Love ya!
