I was saddened to hear of the passing of Juanito Bayén of Bar Pinotxo in La Boqueria market in Barcelona.
We did not know Juanito well, nor did he know us, but we visited him on every trip we made to Barcelona, usually on the first day, making it a point to wait and sit in front of him. His smile, warmth and kindness instantly put us at ease and raised our jetlagged spirits, making us feel at home in the city we came to love. And then there was his food, always incredible!
We're planning to visit Barcelona again soon, but now the market, and the city, will feel just a tad colder without Juanito there to welcome us.
Rest in peace.

27/12/2023 - Dinner
🇪🇸 Bar Central "La Boqueria", Barcelona
They were out of almost everything, so this were the few items that were left.
🦐 Prawns (€ 17.50, $25.54)
Prawns were huge and nicely bouncy but not amazing. With this steep price point, I expected phenomenal prawns.
🦑 Calamari (€ 15.50, $22.63)
Crispy ends with soft tops. Not as tender as i hoped. Came with rather oily fries.
Seriously, give this place a miss. Things really aren't great and it's so expensive. Might as well spend my money back at Bar Del Pla.
Had mango passionfruit juice in a drink store for €3.50. It's alright.

Off to Barcelona
An early start Tuesday as there was much to do. But first a nice breakfast of local pastries. Packing and cleaning were the order of the day and all hands were on deck.
We did manage a break to go out for lunch (easier than making more mess to clean up). At 3pm a van cab came to pick us and our mountain of luggage up for the trip to Barcelona. It was a relief to be on the way, now it is what it is.
The trip to Barcelona passed quickly but then we had a slightly fraught time getting into our accommodation. We had quite a long wait for the key with us and our luggage on the sidewalk.
Finally in the apartment (10 stairs to get to the elevator that was advertised 😬) and all was good again. It’s a spacious, airy apartment once you manage to get inside and has a lovely sunny terrace.
We left the Mums with a sherry and a few nibbles and went off to find the supermarket and explore the neighbourhood.
For dinner we went to a restaurant we had scouted on our way to the supermarket. It was a good evening, nice food and wine (and home made truffles with Jack Daniels 😋) and everyone in a good mood.
Wednesday we set out in search of some of the Gaudi houses and to do some last shopping. A successful day on both counts. We also made it to La Rambla and the Mercado La Boqueria. The Mums had a great day and after a glass of rose beside the market we caught a cab home. Mum was very impressed with how far she’d walked today.
The weather for the most part was really nice, though a cold wind picked up around lunchtime.
Late afternoon back at the apartment was chilling out and nanna nap time (and a load of washing) before heading out to dinner at one of my favourite restaurants here in Barcelona. The restaurant (7 Portes) has been running since 1875. For those who know it, it’s like the Spanish version of the Grand Divan in London.
A lovely meal with lots of laughs, lots of bubbles and checking out the name plates of the famous who have graced the restaurant before us. I think we’ll all sleep well tonight 🥂

Hi everyone!
My name is Zoey Beausoleil and I am making this post to reflect on our day in Spain. This morning we left Madrid and flew to Barcelona.
After a bit of a stressful travel morning, arriving in Barcelona was a breath of fresh air. Upon our arrival in Barcelona, we took a bus to Montjuïc Hill. Montjuïc Hill overlooks the Barcelona harbor and is full of history. The view from the top of Montjuïc Hill is also beautiful. A few important places in Montjuïc that we were able to see include the Joan Miró Foundation or Museum of Barcelona, the Botanical Garden of Barcelona, and the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
Our group was also able to walk around the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, which is the oldest part of the city. We saw several Medieval and Neo-Gothic buildings and stopped in the center square of the Gothic area (which used to be a Roman city) where we saw two major institutions: Palau de la Generalitat and Ajuntament de Barcelona (the town hall). We also saw the most important cathedral in Barcelona. This cathedral is “protected” by stone gargoyles and is considered to be even more important than the famous Sagrada Familia. Additionally, we got to explore and get lunch from La Boqueria, a famous market in Barcelona. This was a very cool experience, as we got to be a part of something that plays a major role in Barcelona’s culture.
Another site that we got to see briefly and learn about today was the Sagrada Familia. While there is a lot of beautiful architecture in Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia is the most impressive structure in my opinion. The Sagrada Familia is a cathedral that was designed by Antonio Gaudí. Construction of the cathedral started in 1882 and is still not completed. When it is finished, the cathedral will be 172.5 meters tall. The Sagrada Familia has three facades: the Passion, Glory, and Nativity, and it is a significant temple of the Holy Family.
To end our day, we all enjoyed dinner together at our hostel. It was a great first day in Barcelona!
That’s all I have for now. Thank you for reading my post!

Barcelona Bliss: Uncovering the Magic of Catalonia’s Capital
Tumblr media
Barcelona, a city that has long enchanted travelers with its rich culture, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere, was next on my list of must-see destinations. As soon as I stepped foot in Catalonia's capital, I knew I was in for an unforgettable journey filled with art, history, and passion.
Day 1: Gaudí’s Architectural Wonderland
My exploration began with Barcelona’s most iconic architect, Antoni Gaudí. His influence on the city is undeniable, and my first stop was the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família. Standing before this towering basilica, I was mesmerized by its intricate details and towering spires that seem to reach for the heavens. Although construction began in 1882, the church is still a work in progress, a symbol of the city’s continuous evolution.
From there, I wandered to Park Güell, another Gaudí masterpiece. Walking through the park’s colorful mosaics and whimsical designs, I felt as though I had entered a surreal world of fantasy. The park offers breathtaking views of the city, and its unique style reflects the heart and soul of Barcelona’s artistic spirit.
Day 2: A Stroll Through the Gothic Quarter
On my second day, I immersed myself in Barcelona’s historical heart: the Gothic Quarter. Narrow, winding streets lead to hidden plazas, ancient cathedrals, and an array of charming cafes. Every corner holds a story, from the Barcelona Cathedral to the Plaça del Rei, where you can almost hear the whispers of medieval times.
The Gothic Quarter is also home to some of the city’s best tapas bars, and I made sure to indulge in traditional Catalan cuisine. Plates of patatas bravas, pan con tomate, and calamari paired perfectly with a glass of local Cava.
Day 3: The Beach and the Boqueria
No trip to Barcelona is complete without a visit to the beach. I spent the morning at Barceloneta Beach, soaking up the Mediterranean sun and enjoying the relaxed, laid-back vibe that defines this part of the city. The golden sands and clear waters are a perfect escape from the bustling streets.
Afterward, I wandered to La Boqueria, Barcelona’s famous food market. The market is a sensory explosion, with colorful displays of fresh produce, seafood, meats, and an array of local specialties. I sampled some of the best jamón ibérico and churros con chocolate I’ve ever tasted.
Day 4: Montjuïc and Magic Fountains
For my final day, I ventured to Montjuïc, a hill that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. The area is rich in cultural attractions, including the Montjuïc Castle, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the Poble Espanyol, a charming village showcasing Spanish architecture from various regions.
As night fell, I made my way to the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, where water, light, and music combine to create a stunning spectacle. Watching the fountains dance in perfect harmony to classical tunes was the perfect way to end my Barcelona adventure.
Conclusion: Discovering Barcelona with Roomchai Limited
Barcelona is a city of magic, where every street, building, and beach invites you to explore its unique culture and history. Navigating this dynamic city was made effortless by Roomchai Limited, whose personalized travel services ensured that every moment of my trip was perfectly curated. Whether it was securing tickets to Gaudí’s masterpieces or organizing a beachside retreat, Roomchai provided expert guidance.
While other agencies like Obokash and ShareTrip offer similar packages, Roomchai’s ability to tailor the experience to my preferences made the journey unforgettable. Barcelona’s charm is undeniable, and with Roomchai, I was able to uncover every bit of the magic that this Catalonian capital holds.

Golf and Gastronomy: A Culinary Journey on Your Golf Break in Spain
Planning a golf break in Spain, many enthusiasts envision stunning courses framed by breathtaking landscapes, the crisp air filled with the promise of a perfect swing. However, what often goes overlooked is the delightful culinary experience that accompanies golfing in this vibrant nation. Spain isn't just a haven for golfers; it's also a gastronomic paradise that beckons visitors with its rich flavors, diverse cuisines, and unique regional dishes. This article will reveal how you can indulge in a memorable culinary journey while enjoying your golf retreat.
Tumblr media
The Allure of Spanish Cuisine
Spain's culinary landscape is as diverse as its geography. Each region boasts its specialties, combining traditional recipes with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From succulent seafood along the coasts to hearty stews in the mountainous areas, the variety is astonishing. In regions like Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Basque Country, you can find a symphony of flavors that range from the robust and fiery to the subtle and delicate.
Imagine starting your day with a hearty breakfast before heading to your tee time. A classic Spanish breakfast might include tostada con tomate (toasted bread with fresh tomato), drizzled with olive oil and accompanied by a cup of rich café con leche. After a few hours on the course, you’ll want to refuel with a leisurely lunch. Picture yourself savoring paella in Valencia, the birthplace of this iconic dish, or indulging in fresh tapas in Seville while recounting your best shots of the day.
Golf Courses with Culinary Delights Nearby
One of the greatest advantages of booking your golf break in Spain through platforms like TeeTimesBooking is the ability to explore extraordinary golf courses that are often situated near some of the best dining experiences. For instance, the Costa del Sol region is renowned not only for its luxurious courses but also for its vibrant culinary scene. After a round of golf at one of the area's prestigious clubs, you can unwind at a seaside restaurant, relishing fresh seafood and traditional dishes like fried fish or gambas al pil-pil.
In Barcelona, you can tee off at the picturesque Club de Golf Montanyà, followed by a gastronomic adventure in the city. Here, you can explore Catalan cuisine, with dishes like escalivada (grilled vegetables) and crema catalana (a delightful custard dessert) awaiting you. Many golf resorts also offer on-site dining options where you can enjoy gourmet meals prepared by top chefs, allowing you to indulge without straying far from the greens.
A Blend of Sport and Taste
The beauty of a golf break in Spain lies in the seamless blend of sport and culinary excellence. After an exhilarating day on the course, consider joining a local cooking class or a food tour. Many regions offer immersive experiences where you can learn about the ingredients that define Spanish cuisine, such as saffron, olives, and cured meats. Participating in these activities not only enhances your understanding of the local culture but also allows you to bring a taste of Spain back home.
For those who enjoy the art of wine, the Andalusia region is famous for its Sherry. Post-golf, you can visit a local winery, where guided tours offer insights into the production process, along with tastings that pair beautifully with regional dishes. This experience enriches your golf journey, turning it into a holistic adventure that tantalizes all your senses.
Exploring Local Markets and Festivals
To truly appreciate the culinary culture of Spain during your golf break, take the time to explore local markets. Markets like La Boqueria in Barcelona or Mercado de Triana in Seville are treasure troves of fresh produce, artisan cheeses, and cured meats. Strolling through these markets, you’ll be captivated by the colors, sounds, and aromas that define the Spanish food scene. You might even find the perfect picnic supplies to enjoy on the golf course or at a nearby park.
Furthermore, timing your trip to coincide with local food festivals can elevate your culinary experience. Festivals such as La Tomatina in Buñol or the San Sebastián Gastronomika celebration highlight Spain’s dedication to food and culture. Participating in these events allows you to immerse yourself in both the local gastronomy and the vibrant community spirit, making your golf break in Spain even more memorable.
Conclusion: A Culinary Golf Escape
In conclusion, a golf break in Spain is much more than just hitting the greens. It’s an opportunity to embark on a culinary adventure that complements your love for the sport. With each swing of the club, you’ll be savoring the flavors of the region, from fresh seafood to exquisite wines, and experiencing the warmth of Spanish hospitality.
By booking your next golf retreat through TeeTimesBooking, you can enjoy not only exceptional golfing experiences but also indulge in the culinary delights that make Spain a unique destination. So pack your clubs, bring your appetite, and get ready for an unforgettable journey where every round of golf is paired beautifully with the rich tapestry of Spanish gastronomy.

Around the World on a Plate: The Role of Food in Cultural Exploration
Travel is a gateway to new experiences, and one of the most compelling ways to explore a new culture is through its food. Culinary traditions are deeply rooted in history, geography, and people's daily lives. By embracing the local cuisine, travelers can gain a deeper understanding of the places they visit, forming connections beyond the typical tourist experience. This article explores how food is vital in cultural exploration, offering insights and connections to make any journey more meaningful.
The Power of Local Dishes
Local dishes often reflect a region's history, climate, and cultural influences. Tasting these dishes allows travelers to experience a place in its most authentic form. Whether it's a hearty bowl of ramen in Japan, a spicy curry in India, or a delicate croissant in France, each dish tells a story of the region's past and present.
These culinary experiences offer more than just a taste of local flavors—they provide an opportunity to learn about each dish's ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural significance. For example, using specific spices in Moroccan tagines is not just for flavor but also reflects the region's history as a crossroads of trade routes. By exploring local dishes, travelers can gain a deeper appreciation for the culture they are visiting, making their journey more enriching and memorable.
Food as a Cultural Exchange
Food serves as a powerful tool for cultural exchange. Sharing a meal with locals can open doors to conversations, friendships, and a deeper understanding of the culture. Whether invited into someone's home for dinner or enjoying street food at a local market, these experiences provide a unique opportunity to connect meaningfully with people.
In many cultures, hospitality is centered around food, with meals often being a time for families and friends to gather and share. Accepting an invitation to dine with locals can lead to a more immersive travel experience, where you can learn about the traditions, customs, and values that define a community. These interactions often leave a lasting impact, creating memories beyond the physical journey.
Exploring Food Markets: A Window into Daily Life
Food markets are vibrant hubs of activity, offering a glimpse into a community's daily life. These markets are often the best place to experience the local food culture, where you can see, smell, and taste the ingredients that define the region's cuisine.
Exploring markets in destinations like Barcelona's La Boqueria, Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, or Mexico City's Mercado de San Juan provides an immersive experience. Travelers can engage with vendors, sample local delicacies, and learn about the food that sustains the community. These markets are more than just places to buy food—they are social centers where people gather, exchange stories, and celebrate their culinary heritage.
Cooking Classes: Bringing Cultural Flavors Home
For those who want to explore a culture's culinary traditions more deeply, cooking classes offer a hands-on way to learn about local cuisine. These classes, often led by local chefs or home cooks, provide an opportunity to learn traditional recipes, cooking techniques, and the cultural context behind the dishes.
Taking a cooking class in destinations like Thailand, Italy, or Morocco allows travelers to bring a piece of the culture home. Whether learning to roll sushi in Japan or crafting handmade pasta in Italy, these experiences enhance your cooking skills and deepen your connection to the culture. The knowledge gained from these classes allows you to recreate the flavors of your travels at home, keeping the memories alive long after your journey has ended.
Festivals and Food: Celebrating Culture Through Cuisine
Food is often at the heart of cultural festivals and celebrations worldwide. These events provide a unique opportunity for travelers to experience the joy and traditions of a community through its cuisine. Participating in these festivals allows travelers to engage with the local culture in a festive and welcoming environment.
From the vibrant celebrations of Diwali in India, where sweets and snacks are shared among friends and family, to the communal feasts of Thanksgiving in the United States, where traditional dishes are prepared and enjoyed together, food plays a central role in bringing people together. Attending these festivals provides insight into the cultural significance of food and how it is used to mark important occasions and rituals.
The Ethics of Eating: Making Responsible Choices
As travelers, it's important to consider the ethical implications of our food choices. This involves being mindful of where our food comes from, how it's produced, and its impact on local communities and the environment. Supporting local businesses, choosing sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients, and avoiding practices that harm the environment or exploit workers are all ways to make responsible food choices while traveling.
Engaging in responsible eating practices not only helps preserve local food traditions but also supports the livelihoods of those who produce the food. By making conscious choices, travelers can contribute to the sustainability of local food systems and the preservation of cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the rich diversity of global cuisine.
Building Connections Through Shared Meals
One of the most powerful aspects of food is its ability to unite people. Whether it's sharing a meal with new friends, dining with locals, or participating in a communal feast, food creates a sense of community and connection that transcends cultural differences.
These shared experiences often become the highlights of a trip, creating lasting memories and deepening the traveler's connection to the culture. Food is more than sustenance—it's a way to connect with others, share stories, and create bonds long after the journey.
As you plan your next adventure, consider how food can enhance your travel experience. By embracing local cuisine, exploring food markets, taking cooking classes, and making responsible food choices, you can enrich your journey and create meaningful connections that will stay with you long after your travels have ended. Let your taste buds guide you on a culinary exploration of the world, and discover how food can transform how you experience new cultures.
