It's karaoke night. What songs do you think each of the hacketteers would sing?
I love this ask and I spent entirely too long thinking about it! Thank you!
Nick: “American Girl” - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He’ll dedicate this one to Abi and play a whole lot of clumsy but enthusiastic air guitar during the instrumental breaks. He’ll also do really on-the-nose inside joke choices like “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon (he'll change 'London' to 'Melbourne' because he's really lame) or “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” by Great White.
Emma: “Style” - Taylor Swift. She just reads as a Taylor girlie to me and this one’s a classic. She could do "We Are Never Getting Back Together" but Jacob might cry. So, "Style" it is. Not too tough in range and it doesn’t require her to do the cringey rap-talking part she’d have to do if she picked “Shake It Off” (although that one would also be fun and maybe if Abi gets drunk enough she’ll join Emma onstage and do that part for her).
Jacob: he wants to pick “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey but it has been banned because basic bitches like him just keep singing it. If he’s still moping about Emma, he might choose “Somebody to Love” by Queen. If someone else gets to it first, then it’s The Killers' “Mr. Brightside” all the way until the bar bans that one too.
Kaitlyn: she almost always picks a song you can scream-sing to. She has some rage to get out, okay? Her go-to is either "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett or "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette. If you get enough alcohol in her for her to get in her feelings though, she might do Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart," as a treat.
Laura: "Dog Days are Over" - Florence + The Machine. Is that another werewolf joke? Yes, yes it is. She can't help being overjoyed to say goodbye to the (meat)dog days. She'd probably also absolutely crush "Help I'm Alive" by Metric.
Max: I will never recover from the post that said Max and Dylan would know every step from the JustDance version of “Rasputin” by Boney M (which I think is completely correct) so I’m picking that one for Max. However, if he gets a second song or he’s feeling extremely sentimental, he might do the Michael Bublé version of “L.O.V.E.” for Laura.
Abi: I think Abi's actual musical listening tastes might be a little moodier than this, but for karaoke she wants it light and easy, and it doesn't get much lighter or easier than ABBA. "Dancing Queen" or "Mamma Mia." She'd really like it if Emma would come sing backup for her so she doesn't have to go up by herself.
Dylan: He never does the same song twice; he wants everyone to be surprised every time. He's done Lady Gaga's "Poker Face. He's done "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" by Panic! At the Disco." He's done Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Tonight, it's "Still Into You" by Paramore.
Ryan: He can't believe he got talked into this. Ryan hates attention and doesn't really love the sound of his own voice. He would prefer to sit quietly and watch everyone else perform. Beer won't be enough, Ryan will have to drink an entire pitcher of LITs to be drunk enough to sing. Then he will sing "Love You Madly" by CAKE and absolutely slay. Dylan will be facedown on their table pretending to have fainted when he gets back.
Bonus: Duets!
Laura and Max have perfected their version of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Elton John and Kiki Dee. You should really see it. There’s choreo and everything.
Jacob and Kaitlyn will sing "I Believe in A Thing Called Love" by The Darkness. Nobody knows why. Neither of them has the upper range to pull it off and they know it. It's awful. They're just screeching. Ryan has to go outside until they're finished. His nerves can't take it. They have fun though.
Dylan would really like Ryan to duet with him on Peter Bjorn and John's "Young Folks," he'll even do the girl parts and the whistling! But Ryan's one and done at karaoke, and even that is asking a lot. Instead, Dylan and Nick duet The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" in absurd and potentially offensive Scottish accents.
Emma and Abi end up duetting half the time when they're supposed to be doing their own songs anyway, especially when it's Abi's turn! Somehow Emma just ends up there too. But they do "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper together with some frequency and they're great at it.
Bonus 2: Group Number!
You already know what it is. You know what's coming. You get it stuck in your head every time you play the damn game (don't you? I know it's not just me.) How could they not all sing Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" together? Of course they do.

Heyo Eri :3
I see you've taken an interest of my NSR fan kiddies aka Burning Constellation and the OFA Rockstars becoming villians aka L.O.V.E. So I've come to ask on what you think the reactions of everyone such as the main NSR Cast, Nueva York, Vandelay, and even the Psychonauts would be when L.O.V.E forms and starts causing havoc everywhere. It's mainly Burning Constellation who starts causing mayhem by launching an attack that destroys the NSR Tower aka Orion doing what her dad Kliff did and drops a satellite on it only this time the satellite hits the Tower and causes a lot of damage, plus they also steal the Grand Qwasa- (I'm sure Kliff would be proud of his daughter LOL-)
Then all the OFA Artists join L.O.V.E after becoming villains themselves so now it's getting out of control to where Titanium has to call in help so she would call in the 4 main groups mentioned. How would they go about to defeat the L.O.V.E villains? Would they try to take them out one by one in order of the OFA Rockstars (Henrick being the first, Rosie second, Prince Astral third, CAL forth, Jodie fifth, and Burning Constellation last?) Or would they lure them into a trap and them battle them all at once?
I apologize for this ask being quite lengthy, I'm really down the rabbit hole of my silly group of villains-
For the NSR characters, it depends on if the tower was empty or not (also I don't know all about your AU, I keep forgetting with my terrible memory, so I don't know who's still alive or still working for NSR at this point in time so I'll keep it vague lol).
If it's empty, like they were able to evacuate in time, the destruction of NSR tower would be devastating but not too bad. If it was full, then L.O.V.E. would be seen as absolute monsters and murderers. They would be hated by a large majority of Vinyl City and probably the NSR cast as well (imagine if Titanium was IN the tower when the satellite hit, we'd need a new leader of Vinyl City then, but since she's the one who calls for help she most likely survives).
Stealing the Grand Qwasa (which sounds so funny to me lol) would be devastating as well since most, if not all, of the power in Vinyl City is now gone. People would die from hospitals not being powered and flooding as machines to keep flooding down are now not being powered at all. Not to mention the whole structure of the city is being thrown all over the place because of the chaos. L.O.V.E. would be despised by the citizens of Vinyl City.
As for the retaliation itself, I don't think NSR would have means of fighting L.O.V.E.. I don't know about your version of NSR, but mine wouldn't have the security to go against a whole villainous organization, which is probably why Titanium tries asking for help.
I doubt Vandelay Tech would do anything. They are just a tech company, not really out there looking to save the world. I'm sure they could offer some security robots, but honestly I doubt they would actually even have any more of those at this point since those types of robots were more Kale's doing and not something Roxanne or Peppermint would have kept going. I can see them sending robots that specialize in care and help to Vinyl City during this time though.
Psychonauts and Nueva York. Those are two organizations that would help Titanium (if they are still around. I definitely think Psychonauts would still be around, but not so sure if Nueva York would have been able to stand the test of time).
With the Psychonauts, they usually only deal with psychic battles, however, they would absolutely be willing to help stop this organization considering they've HAD to have killed some people. I don't know how much of the OG adult cast from Psychonauts would be around (the Psychic 7 are long dead by this point, as are people like Milla and Sasha being very old or dead by this point), I think Raz would be around still, but I don't know if she would still be an active member of the Psychonauts (since she'd be like... idk 50+ at this point, but she could definitely still be kicking ass lol).
Either way, whatever Psychonauts are around would be willing and ready to help try and stop L.O.V.E. at all costs. Using their psychic powers and advanced tech at this point would definitely help them as they track down and get ready to fight L.O.V.E.
Nuvea York is a tricky one. Because, if the Power Revolution worked and stuck true to the core of Nueva York, then that organization wouldn't really be used in this situation. Nueva York at this point is about helping people learn to control their powers, nothing more and nothing less.
Other organizations would have been made to help rehabilitate people using their powers for evil, or to hold people with powers who would have been able to escape captivity after committing a crime, but Nueva York would not be one of them. So whatever other organization is used to help detain and stop people from using their powers purposefully for evil would be called instead (the people of Nueva York would probably not like L.O.V.E. though, considering what they have already done to Vinyl City).
As for HOW L.O.V.E. would be captured, I think the Psychonauts and Power Organization (don't know what else to call it) wouldn't really work together right off the bat. They each have their own methods for dealing and capturing enemies, so they would rather work alone. They'd both also wait until L.O.V.E. commits some kind of crime, maybe try to set up a situation that would attract L.O.V.E., but for the first few tries they would rather try and get L.O.V.E. to commit their own crimes at first and try and stop them at the scene.
I can see it being kinda comical if you want to go that way, where Power Organization and Psychonauts make each other fail a few times and they have a little rivalry going on until something super serious happens and that's when the two groups start to work together and actually coordinate instead of almost actively sabotaging each other.
The order of capture would also depend on how L.O.V.E. operates itself. Do they usually attack in groups or by themselves with only some attacks being group/partner work. If it's single work with sometime having group/partner work, then Psychonauts and PO would do their best to get crimes that are committed by more than one person. But if they only capture one then that's fine as then they can use methods like going into the person's brain (or I guess code for CAL if I remember correctly) to look for the location of L.O.V.E.'s headquarters or base of operations.
If it's group work, then the Psychonauts and PO would do their best to try and capture everyone at once. I can see something going wrong and one person from L.O.V.E. escaping, and now the two organizations have to worry about them breaking out the rest of L.O.V.E. or something.
It could also be that L.O.V.E. ends up never getting caught because of reasons like they are too good at evading capture or are too ruthless that even if they were almost caught, the casualties were too great for their pursuers that they were able to escape each time.
I don't know how serious or dark you want to take this villainous version of characters, but depending on the intensity you could get really dark with it or make it really comical!

Albums Of 2023: 25-1
Tumblr media
Part one of this list (numbers 50-26) is here:
The countdown continues:
25.
DJ Rap "Dark Glitter"
Tumblr media
Exclusively released as an NFT, not many people got to hear Rap's first full length of new material since 2010. And while I rather hate the release method, I wasn't going to miss out on a new album from Charissa Saverio. And it's a genre jumping affair. Yes, there's plenty of drum & bass as expected, but also some downtempo breaks, house, dubstep, even pop. With some orchestral flourishes, rock riffs, jazzy elements, skittery beats. All good stuff.
24.
Bored Lord "Name It"
Tumblr media
Oakland's Bored Lord has dived into the late 80's and early 90s dance scenes for a load of sounds of rave - breaks, drum & bass, house and more - to create an album which is both fresh and incredibly retro.
23.
Therapy? "Hard Cold Fire"
Tumblr media
Northern Irish rock legends Therapy? release their 14th full length, and it's arguably their strongest collection in nearly two decades. It doesn't re-invent the wheel, but does what they do, and does it well.
22.
Saint Agnes "BLOODSUCKERS"
Tumblr media
The bluesy rock of their debut is replaced by fury, energy and riffs more akin to Rage Aganst The Machine than to The White Stripes. The title track kicks of proceedings, and what a way to begin. One of the tunes of the year, and it is nearly impossible to sit still for the three and a half minutes it pummels your ear drums. It certainly getting the adrenaline pumping. Nothing that follows quite matches its awesomeness, but every track is very worthwhile.
21.
Orbital "Optical Delusion"
Tumblr media
Dance legends Orbital bring us their 10th album. Some new classics nestle among the tracklist, among some new sounds for them, and some quirky oddities, but it's all undeniably the work of the Hartnoll brothers.
20.
Skindred "Smile"
Tumblr media
The Welsh raggae metal titans prove with their 8th album that you can play the long game in this industry and still keep growing. This was very nearly their first UK number 1 album, and lost out at the last only on streams (it was the biggest selling album of the week), and it was paired with the announcement of their biggest ever headline show at Wembley Arena. Granted 'single' "L.O.V.E (Smile Please)" almost sounds like an attempt to break through to the mainstream, with it's crazy, catchy, pop reggae vibes and uplifting chorus. And it seems to have worked. But older fans need not worry, for there are plenty of crunchy guitars and pounding drums to create much moshpit madness, along with plenty of powerful and melodic vocal turns from Benji Webbe.
19.
Emma Hewitt "Ghost Of The Light"
Tumblr media
While probably best known for lending her incredible, angelic vocals to many a trance floor filler, her solo stuff is more dark, electronic pop. Sophisticated, atmospheric and catchy, beautiful hooks aplenty. This album has more 80s synthpop influences than her 2012 debut, but still maintains the ethereal magic.
18.
Delain "Dark Waters"
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, when all of the members of Delain, except founder Martijn Westerholt, left the band at the same time, something didn't feel right and I instinctively sided with Charlotte Wessels and co. Charlotte being the vocalist on every one of their previous albums, and, to me, as vital to the band as Martijn (even though there has been a bit of a revolving door of other members). I wasn't even sure I wanted the newly built version of Delain to succeed. But naturally I was curious. And of course, they've produced a brilliant album. Excellently delivered symphonic metal from start to finish, with some stunning melodies. If you liked them before, you'll like them now.
17.
Coach Party "Killjoy"
Tumblr media
Brilliant debut album from the Isle Of Wight indie rockers. The way they skip between ethereal melodic numbers and spiky, punky rockers is quite reminiscent of Wolf Alice, but there are some chirpier and moodier efforts on here too. Fab stuff.
16.
Duncan Forbes "Return Of The Strobelight Kid"
Tumblr media
One half of 90s progressive house pioneers Spooky, Duncan Forbes delivers his debut solo album. The beats range from 2-Step, to house, to techno, to old school breakbeats, over absorbing widescreen soundscapes.
15.
Superlove "follow:noise"
Tumblr media
Second album from this noise-pop trio. Jaunty, upbeat, catchy rock songs, with slightly off-kilter, unexpected song construction, some electronic moments, and plenty of absolutely huge, chunky riffs.
14.
Turtle "Landmass"
Tumblr media
An ode to the Scottish countryside with which Turtle surrounds himself, full of glorious beatless ambience, to mellow breakbeat, pumping four to the floor, haunting samples and string sections that will bring you to tears. A beautiful album to chill out to and get lost in. One of the rare occasions I recommend the digital version of an album, as the vinyl oddly omits some of the best tracks.
13.
Nicholson "Carpe Diem"
Tumblr media
Hard trance legend Carl Nicholson, unleashes what is apparently his final trance artist album, and it's a fabulous journey through the genre. Uplifting, euphoric, hard, and acid led, with some huge goosebump moments.
12.
Public Service Broadcasting "This New Noise"
Tumblr media
Initially recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jules Buckley for the 2022 BBC Proms, and newly remixed for the album release (oddly there is a version with crowd noise and a version without, the latter feeling like a studio album), it's an enthralling, interesting ode to radio for the centenary of the BBC. And while PSB's instrumentation and choice of samples is excellent, it is the orchestra that lifts this to the epic heights it reaches.
11.
RAM "Wanderlust"
Tumblr media
There is a run of 5 tracks in the middle of this album, that is absolute peak, modern, euphoric trance. Huge leads, stunning vocal melodies and performances, wonderful atmospheres and pounding beats. The other half of the album isn't bad at all, either. I recommend searching out the mixed version of the album (sadly this isn't the version on the CD). The unmixed version is all edits and the tracks don't get to breathe properly. Sometimes there isn't a huge difference in the track length, but it makes all the difference in the album flow. But as an example, the magnificent "Echoes" with Roxanne Emery is over twice as long.
10.
Black Honey "A Fistful Of Peaches"
Tumblr media
The first and second Black Honey albums just missed out on the Offbeat Top 10's of their years (11 & 12 respectively in 2018 & 2021), and their third here has just, very deservedly, made it in. Their songcraft keeps getting stronger, and they keep subtly mixing up their styles. There are some true indie-rock classics here.
9.
Trance Wax "Open Up The Night"
Tumblr media
The second album from Belfast-based Trance Wax (known as Gary to his mum) is another fantastic affair for lovers of the genre. The tracks here cover much of the varied spectrum of trance, plus a bit of breaks, drum & bass and house thrown in for good measure. Classics aplenty.
8.
Hot Milk "A Call To The Void"
Tumblr media
Are Hot Milk a rock band with a penchant for a catchy pop hook, or a pop band with a knack for a chunky guitar riff. I'd say yes to both. Either way, the tracks here both provide singalong earworms, and plenty of moshpit fuel, and along the way some nifty electronic production, and even some goosebump inducing orchestration.
7.
Ad Infinitum "Chapter III - Downfall"
Tumblr media
The Swiss symphonic metal quartet fronted by the magnificent Melissa Bonny were honing their craft over their first 2 rather good albums, but with this, their third, they have hit their stride. It is fantastic. The melodies, riffs and hooks are all on point. All killer, no filler.
6.
DMA's "How Many Dreams?"
Tumblr media
Britpop influenced indie (jangly sing along anthems, string laden slow cuts), with a healthy dose of electronic atmospheres and pumping beats, combined with huge choruses, evokes a charming, warm euphoria.

anamē "Beautiful World"

A gorgeous album of progressive house soundscapes, with some breakbeat wonders and a few trance influences in there too. Add to that some incredible guest vocals from Lydmor, Bien and more, and you have a beautiful album to float away with.

Within Temptation "Bleed Out"
Tumblr media
After a couple of slightly disappointing albums (when compared to their earlier work), Within Temptation make a staggering return to form on their 8th long player. Their heaviest album since their debut, including some incredible djent style riffs (no gentle ballads on this one), but there is no shortage of their trademark epicness, symphonic stylings and huge choruses. Not to mention the incredible voice of Sharon den Adel front and centre as always. Up there with the best they've ever done.

Enter Shikari "A Kiss For The Whole World"
Tumblr media
An incredible run of consistantly brilliant albums (to me their debut was good, interesting and showed a lot of potential, every one since has been brilliant), and with their 7th, Shikari have possibly produced their most accessible one to date (evidenced by it being their first UK number 1?). But that doesn't mean it's not 100% an Enter Shikari album, with it's constant flow, yet genre hopping all over the place. One of the most exciting, original and special bands in the world right now.

Poppy "Zig"
Tumblr media
It is almost impossible to classify Poppy as an artist, such is the variety of styles she has released in her decade long career. You can mostly classify each project though, and she has released albums and EPs of bubblegum pop, electro pop, instrumental ambient, metal, industrial, punk, 90's style alternative rock & grunge, but now with "Zig" she has delivered her masterpiece (so far). It is mostly dark electronic music but with plenty of pop leanings and catchy hooks, elements of industrial, trip-hop, drum & bass, rock & metal. Yes, the songwriting is excellent, interesting and full of ear worms. Yes, Poppy's vocals are on point, both light and seductive in turns. But the crucial part of the album for me is the phenominal production by Ali Payami. So many incredible noises and sounds that engulf, captivate and excite.
I love lots of new music, but it's quite rare that an album and artist causes the excitement and interest that lots of music did when I was a teen. This year, there were two. And yes, Poppy was very much considered for the number 1 spot. She possibly would have been in many other years. But.....

Conquer Divide "Slow Burn"
Tumblr media
The fact that there is too much screaming for my taste, or a couple of brief uses of that omnipotent 2010's pop vocal effect that I'd always question the use of, has not stopped this otherwise gargantuan album rising to the top of the pile and eclipsing the majority of the competition. Describing it as a mix of hard rock and metalcore, just doesn't do it justice to quite how epic it sounds. It soars! Magnificent guitar work from Izzy Johnson and primary songwriter Kristen Sturgis, and rhythmic brilliance from Janel Duarte on bass and Sam Landa on drums, and some excellent production and elctronic touches, all backing for Janel's afforementioned screams, and the incredible singing and clean vocals from Kia Castillo. What a voice. What melodies she delivers, what goosebumps occur.
Aside from my niggly complaints at the start, I have only one other negative to say towards this album, and it's nothing to do with what is present, rather what is missing. Comback singles "Chemicals" and "Messy" were utterly fantastic tracks that definitely deserved to be on this album, they were the ones that got me excited for this album (my thoughts on their previous album were positive, but nowhere near this positive) and their presence would have made this album even better!
In the 8 years between their self titled debut album and this, their 2nd, Conquer Divide have morphed from a solid and enjoyable metalcore band, to one of the most impressive and exciting bands on the planet. With the potential to be even greater! In the meantime I sit wondering how this record, with it's huge "why are they not hits?" anthems "The INVISIBLE", "Paralyzed" & "N E W H E A V E N", hasn't already got them headlining arenas across the globe.
