CLIPPED (June 2024): Six-episode dramatization, based on an ESPN podcast series, of the 2014 scandal surrounding then L.A. Clippers owner and real estate tycoon Donald Sterling (played here by Ed O'Neill, once again demonstrating his zeal for unflattering roles), whose much younger mixed-race girlfriend V. Stiviano (Cleopatra Coleman) sent a recording of his racist remarks to TMZ — while being sued by Sterling's wife Shelly (Jacki Weaver) over Sterling's expensive gifts — leaving Clippers coach Doc Rivers (Laurence Fishburne) struggling to hold the already-shaky team together through the fallout. LeVar Burton, a friend of Rivers, appears as himself.
Based on a podcast about the scandal, the show is structurally and tonally reminiscent of the 2016 miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE VS. O.J. SIMPSON, although unlike the earlier show, it takes a while to cohere if you're not already familiar with the story. Its best moments are in the third episode, which looks at the impact on the mostly Black players, and in the fourth, which is mostly a flashback to the younger Rivers in 1992, grappling with aftermath of the L.A. riots. Its biggest weakness is its weird ambivalence about Stiviano (still notorious for her "his silly rabbit" and "his right-hand arm" gaffes), alternating between sympathy and painting her as an opportunistic dingbat. Since the only other Black female character in the show (V's friend Deja, played by Yvonna Pearson) is presented as a mean-spirited bitch, one gets the feeling creator Gina Welch — who is white — does not have a high regard for Black women in general, which sits ill given the greater nuance afforded Shelly Sterling. VERDICT: Decent real-life soap opera, but I'm not sure the dramatization adds much to the original podcast.

Hello, I'm Shy Alley, a dedicated voice-over artist, and interestingly, I share my home with six bunnies and two dogs.
Facts about Don Ed Hardy and Tweeter’s Recovery.
Tweeters Recovery is a follow-up painting done in 1995 to a 1992 painting after the L.A. riots which was titled “Bad News (Tweeter is Sick)”.
The painting contains significant religious symbolism, including Tibetan Buddha eyes on the crown, and depicts a god figure walking through the sky with his hand emitting benevolent rays.
Don Ed Hardy integrates traditional Japanese tattoo techniques with American styles in his designs, creating a blend of Eastern and Western artistic influences.
In addition to his tattooing expertise, Hardy rose to prominence by launching the Ed Hardy brand in the early 2000s, which gained acclaim for its unique clothing line featuring designs inspired by Hardy's distinctive tattoos. (My dad use to wear them when they were popular.)
Don Ed Hardy holds a master's degree in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. This academic background demonstrates his formal training and dedication to honing his artistic skills, setting a solid foundation for his influential career in tattoo art and design.
When I first encountered this artwork, its style immediately evoked memories of the 2000s for me. However, my initial impressions were somewhat negative, likely influenced by the association of the brand with bikers and the prevailing stigma surrounding tattoos during that era, before they gained widespread acceptance through pop culture icons. At that time, I was unfamiliar with the specific details or had seen any of his actual paintings. Now, upon closer examination, my initial reaction is that the composition feels a bit cluttered. Questions arise about the significance of elements like the club, the random ink blots, and the 'D' over the 'E.' While the symbolism within the piece is intriguing, I find the background particularly compelling. The outline featuring the clipper and Telegraph Hill harmonizes well with the background's color transitions. However, elements like the blue ink used for the god, the crown, and the lightning seem to clash with the overall color scheme, becoming somewhat distracting.

Love & Basketball: A Black Excellence Classic by AR
Tumblr media
1st Quarter: “All is fair in love and basketball, right?” It’s 1981 in L.A. Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) are two childhood sweethearts who both want to be in the NBA. Quincy’s dad is Zeke McCall (Dennis Haysbert) who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. He is a natural talent born pro. Monica has to work hard to prove herself with a stay at home mom/wife who wants her to be ladylike.
2nd quarter: Now it’s 1988 and their love-hate relationship lasts until high school with Monicas’ edge and Quincy’s top-dog attitude. On prom night, the soon to become couple shows their true feelings after they revealed they’ll be going to the same college, USC. They celebrated with a kiss, finally showing the passion between the two. Quincy took Monica’s virginity.
3rd quarter: Both managing themselves as athletes, students and as a couple, Quincy instantly finds success of the court. Monica struggles for playing time behind senior guard Sidra, having run-in with her head coach. Monica and Quincy’s relationship grows apart more as they deal with the reality of two different lifestyles. Monica finally earns point guard at the end of the season. When Quincy finds out his dad lied to him about cheating on his mom, he goes to Monica for comfort. But that means she would have to miss her curfew and she didn’t want to mess up her opportunity. She denied him. He cheated on her. They exchanged some words and broke up.
4th quarter: It’s now 1993. The two have strived through their careers both playing as professional basketball players. After Monica’s last championship game playing for an international Woman’s basketball team in Barcelona, she realizes that basketball doesn’t make her happy anymore. Quincy, who left USC after the breakup, has now been in the the NBA for 5 years. He is now engaged and tore his ACL at his championship game. Monica, hearing about the bad news, flies home to see him. The two are lost for words. When they see other, they are in awe of how much they missed each other. But they didn’t want to say it out loud. Monica ends up getting a little uncomfortable when she meets Quincy’s fiancé. Monica goes home and starts arguing with her mom over her resentments. Her mom felt as if she had to give up her dreams after having children and she resents Monica for not appreciating the sacrifices she made for our family. Monica felt as if her mom never made her feel loved and accepted because she kept trying to force her to give up on her goals for a stereotypical woman's role in life that she didn’t care for.
Quincy’s wedding in two weeks and Monica’s mom sees that she’s a little upset about the good news so she tells her to go fight for her man back and continue her career. Monica challenges Quincy in a one-on-one game for his heart. He ends up winning, meaning he’ll get married to his fiancé. But instead, he chooses Monica. At the end, it is 1998 and Quincy, her husband, and their daughter, are cheering for their mom who plays for the new WNBA.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, produced by Spike Lee and Sam Kite, this Black excellence classic was realized on April 21, 2000. The acting quality was amazing. Today’s movies no shade would never compare. These talented actors made you live that movie with them as if you were really in their shoes. As if there was really a Monica Wright and Quincy McCall. The soundtrack was phenomenal with some of the greatest artists of all time including Rafael Saddiq, Angie Stone, Zapp and Steve Silk. Hurley also included some songs from MC Lyte, Al Green, Rufus and the famous -- rest her soul -- Aaliyah...as well as many more talented artists. The ratings of this film blew the roof. Fans loved it. Celebrities loved it. It’s a classic. If you don’t like this movie... you’re clearly a hater!
I love this movie so much because it just shows you how you can do anything you put your mind to. The character, Monica, is so passionate about everything she does so she comes off as an emotional wreck when she really just wants to be accepted for who she is. She made it to the top from scratch -- no handouts. Moral of her story: it’s okay to be yourself. Quincy’s ego in the movie is just like some of our male Black fellas in the world and not saying it’s bad to be spoon-fed but his situation in the outcome humbled him to learn that he needs to be there for her just as much as she was there for him. And the big moral of the story is about empowering Black love. The fairytale of falling in love with your childhood best friend.

LeBron James credits Lakers' supporting cast for Game 1 win
Tumblr media
LeBron James credits Lakers' supporting cast for Game 1 win The Los Angeles Lakers entered the fourth quarter of Sunday's Game 1 of their first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies clinging to a six-point lead. In the first 11 minutes of the final frame, LeBron James and Anthony Davis attempted just one shot apiece. And yet L.A. ran away with a 128-112 victory as a bench player and a guy who went undrafted out of college just two years ago took over. Rui Hachimura scored nine of his 29 points in the fourth, tying Mychal Thompson's Lakers franchise record for most points by a substitute in a playoff game. Austin Reaves went 5-for-5 in the fourth, including scoring nine straight points late in the quarter, en route to 23 points total. "It was our supporting cast that won us the game tonight," said James, who had 21 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. The Lakers needed the extra effort from their roster with things looking dicey at halftime. Davis, who finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 steals to become the first player since Tim Duncan nearly 20 years ago to put up that type of postseason statline, suffered a stinger to his right shoulder and had to exit the game late in the second quarter. The Lakers trailed by six at the time. Then Hachimura went 4-for-4 from 3 in six minutes of playing time in the third quarter and L.A. was back in control. The fourth-year forward, acquired in a trade with Washington in late January, said they were all shots he specifically practiced coming into the series, with Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy scouting the gaps in the Grizzlies' defense that Hachimura could target. "The way they guard me, they're going to be in the paint so I got to be ready to shoot those kind of shots," Hachimura said. Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane confirmed as much, while directing a challenge toward Hachimura for Game 2. "That was our game plan going in -- make him hit shots and he did," Bane said. "Tip your cap. It's probably the best game he's had in his career. It's a seven-game series. Let's see if he can do it again Wednesday." Reaves, who signed a two-way contract with the Lakers in the summer of 2021 after he went undrafted out of Oklahoma and was later converted to a full-fledged member of the team before the season began, closed things out. "You dream about being on a stage like this," Reaves said. "And I got hot late and I had fun." It was the first time the Lakers had four players score 20 or more in the playoffs since May 15, 1988, when James Worth, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Byron Scott did it. And D'Angelo Russell (19 points, seven assists) nearly made it five. While L.A. won 10 of its past 12 games, including Tuesday's play-in win over Minnesota to secure the No. 7 seed against No. 2 Memphis, there were signs of slippage. The Lakers didn't look sharp in their final four regular-season games, which included a loss to the Clippers, and their effort against Minnesota was disjointed at best and undisciplined at worst. Lakers coach Darvin Ham said his team used the four-day break between the win over the Wolves and Game 1 against Memphis to recalibrate. "The last week of the season or so, the play-in game, possessions got away from us," Ham said. "We threw away possessions with no pass or one pass and then shot." L.A. locked in after a team address by James and Davis about the increased intensity that the playoffs require, and seemingly has recaptured the momentum that got it to the playoffs in the first place. "How can we best extract the most production as we can out of this group?" Ham said, explaining the aim of the time off. "And this is how. This is what's going to work against this team and what we need to explore; this is what we need to leave to the side. I thought it was a combination of all of that -- being fresh and taking a deep, hard look at our offense and what's been good and what's been bad." While the Lakers started the series off with a statement win, stealing home-court advantage from the Grizzlies as they attempt to become the first No. 7 seed to pull off a first-round upset since San Antonio in 2010, James focused on some of the bad from Sunday. He pointed out that L.A.'s 16 turnovers led to 15 points for the Grizzlies and took responsibility for the five he had himself. "I thought the guys definitely understood that assignment and were really good tonight," James said. "But I think we can be even better." Read the full article

Suns mess up as former player thriving in massive role elsewhere
The Phoenix Suns have started the season 4-1, and look like one of the best teams in the Western Conference in the early goings of the campaign. Their 21 point comeback victory over the L.A. Clippers – the second game in a row they’ve fought back from a double-digit deficit – proof that this year’s team is better than last season’s. The Suns’ depth has been an integral part of their victories…

T-shirt design inspired by Ron Harper’s iconic tweet.
Ron Harper never felt like he was playing for a "B team" when he played for the #LAClippers.
Background: During an episode of the Podcast P show, Paul George made a controversial statement by calling the Clippers "the B team of LA". Later 5-time NBA champion Ron Harper told P. George to just be a better player.
- "Stop it!!!! Play harder then! I never felt like the B team in L.A. for the LAClippers!" - Harper said on social media X.

Ron Harper played for the L.A. Clippers from 1989 to 1994, which was arguably some of the darker times in franchise history. It's very noble for Harper to come to the team's defense after Paul George's statement. 👏🏼 Mad props & admiration! Much Respect! Ron Harper won multiple NBA championships, and is a legend!

Alexander: Luka Doncic trade gives Lakers mixed emotions
INGLEWOOD — It has already been a wild, weird, wonderful week in L.A., and Luka Doncic hasn’t even played a game for the Lakers yet. He spent Tuesday night at the end of their bench, wearing a Lakers’ black sweatsuit, looking a wee bit nervous while the game was somewhat close but yukking it up with the regulars during garbage time of the Lakers’ 116-87 rout of the cross-county rival Clippers.
