Release: April 7, 2003
Lyrics:
I would like to say that I
Never meant to make you cry
I think about you every day
No matter what your friends might say
Everybody knows my name
Even though I'm still the same
I just would like to say that I
I never ever meant to make you cry
I would like to know
Why there are clouds in the sky
Every time I fall in love
And I would like to know
Why I'm sitting here on my own
I would like to know
Why when I find a nice guy
Someone I can lean upon
I mess it all up and then
I wonder why I'm all alone
Tell me if you think that I
I'm talking way too much
Tell me if you'd like to stay in touch
I would like to say that I
Never meant to make you cry
I think about you every day
No matter what your friends might say
Everybody knows my name
Even though I'm still the same
I just would like to say that I
I never ever meant to make you cry
Sitting on the sofa
Letting life go by
Thinking about the early days
Thinkin' 'bout the times when I
Hurt you with my crazy ways
All I want to do is
Look around for you yeah
Drivin' till the break of dawn
And
Pleading till your coming home
Tell me if you think that I
I've been I bit to much
Tell me if you'd like to stay in touch
I would like to say that I
Never meant to make you cry
I think about you every day
No matter what your friends might say
Everybody knows my name
Even though I'm still the same
I just would like to say that I
I never ever meant to make you cry
cry
I didn't mean to be so cruel
(I didn't mean to be so cruel)
I didn't mean to let you down
(I didn't mean to let you down)
So sorry for the rain
On your terrain
On all the pain
You must have gained because of me
Songwriter: Angie Aparo
I would like to say that I (I would like to say)
Never meant to make you cry
I think about you every day (oh every day)
No matter what your friends might say
Everybody knows my name
Even though I'm still the same (still the same)
I just would like to say that I
I never ever meant to make
I never ever meant to make you cry

Eurovision 2006 - Number 24 - Kym Marsh - "Whisper to Me"
youtube
In 2005, the UK sent Javine - the woman who was nearly in Girls Aloud. That didn't go well. It appears that some lessons hadn't been learned here, as for 2006 the BBC went back to the pool of talent that had done well in previous talent shows and who had fading solo careers.
Kym Marsh had actually won Popstars in 2001 and was part of the band the series spawned - Hear'Say. They had two UK number one singles and a number one album before, just over a year later, Kym decided to go solo. That decision started off looking like a good one. She had two more UK top ten single solo as well as a top ten album. Not quite as good as she was doing with Hear'Say, but still, that's success however you slice it.
Then her third single was a bust and even though she was a familiar face in the pages of the tabloids, gossip and lifestyle magazines, the music industry collectively started to edge away from her. Still, there's always Eurovision, and if there's one thing Kym can definitely do well, it's sing.
Whisper to Me was commissioned from Danny Orton and Melissa Peirce, two Tennessee based song-writers with extensive credits in the country music scene in the US. Underneath its pop-ballad trappings, Whisper to Me is a country song. It's a simple paean to the stabilising influence a single, loved voice can have in a life of chaos and confusion. Perfect ballad material. Kym is head and shoulders above every other performer at Making You Mind Up 2006 in terms of her vocal ability. Her voice is crystal clear, emotional, controlled everything you could possible want for ballad. Her range isn't tested, but despite that this is quite beautiful.
But ultimately, it's a ballad. No one in the UK was in the mood for a ballad. Ballads were old hat. This is Eurovision. It's got to be crazier! Kym with a perfectly sung, well-written soft ballad finished fourth of the six songs in the combined public voting, a long, long way behind the winner. It was never going to set Eurovision alight, but compared to what the UK did send... Well.
Fortunately for Kym, just as the UK national finals put an end to her short pop career, she found a home in acting. Specifically soap operas. She played a main character in the UKs oldest soap Coronation Street for several years, and was impactful enough in that role, that a waxwork of her playing Michelle Connor was put in the Blackpool branch of Madame Tussauds. She featured in that role from 2006 (shortly after Making Your Mind Up was aired) to 2019. She's now moved into presenting on UK TV as well as being a regular 'celeb' face for more than two decades now.
