Behind the Scenes Fate/Extra Talk

After reading a comment on the most recent episode (which made an excellent point about one of the voices), I decided to write up why we went with some of the voices we went with. To avoid spoilers I’m only writing about characters that have already appeared. If you are curious, read below the cut

 Ace the Initial Protagonist (played by Hibiki Kuraii): The initial protagonist is something of a complicated character. It isn’t clear if he’s an AI who accidentally obtained sentience or an unlucky master who couldn’t overcome the brainwashing. We wanted something that was just interesting enough to believe could be either. While a handful of people were in consideration, Hibiki did an excellent job portraying the panic and curiosity the character called for. 

 Hakuno (played by Mazerly): For this character we were looking for the “everywoman” as it were. Someone the audience could relate to. We wanted something that was grounded in reality. And not anime over the top. Mazerly has been doing a great job so far.

 Shinji Matou (played by ItsOnlyOtto): With Shinji, we wanted a performance and voice that made you want to punch him in the face. Otto delivers in spades. Easily one of my favorites so far.

 Taiga (played by Rhuze): Taiga is bubbly and friendly. Also a tad airheaded. Rhuze manages to make the character fun and over the top. A great silly character.

 Leo Harway (played by Philiard): Leo is somewhat complicated as well. He’s something of a spoiled rich kid. But there’s something off about him. He seems kind and well meaning. He’s fairly mysterious. Phil nails it, and he was one of our favorites early in the casting process.

 Sakura Matou (played by Punkin): Sakura is a sweet and caring AI. She follows her programming to the letter. We wanted a voice that was calm and kind but in the case of one scene, could flip into scary. Punkin did awesome in that scene in particular.

 Kuzuki (played by James Dijit): For Kuzuki we wanted an intimidation factor oozing with coldness. Dij is great and I can’t wait until we get to do more with this character.

 Rin (played by Homulily): This was probably the first character in casting we opted to go in a different direction than in the official dubs. While there are aspects of her classic tsundere portrayal, we chose to have a little more going on under the surface. Lily has found a pretty good balance thus far in the series.

 Kotomine (played by Itwasred): This was a tough one, given that there have been two very different official portrayals. So we opted to go for something a little different. Kotomine being an AI gave us a little wiggle room to do something else. This Kirei is suspicious and conniving, but not actually evil. Red captured that faux evilness very well.

 Red Saber (played by Mippa): This is definitely our biggest departure from the original voice. With each of these characters we looked up the official English or Japanese voice and then read a voice description from Typemoon. And Saber’s voice in the game contrasted with the description given. It read "She gives off the impression of a valiant young man in crimson, and she has a masculine bearing and tone of voice" but the Japanese voice was high pitched and more... waifu-y? So we debated which was more appropriate. We opted to use the description rather than the Japanese-style voice. 

 Issei (played by Kuyalaw): Issei is a no-nonsense AI who fulfills his programming to the letter and has no time for shenanigans. Kuyalaw managed to make him sound serious without winding up in monotone territory.

 The Mysterious Voice (played by Shannon L. Shook): This is a fun character to listen to. Shannon having a really cool voice helps. But we wanted something that sounded sly and condescending. Like it knows much more than it is letting on. Shannon is spot on in the role.

Hopefully you found some of that interesting. I may do more of these when more episodes are released. (As I did leave a couple characters out who had also already shown up because I couldn’t talk about them without getting into spoilers.)
