Watching Chainsaw Man, having already read the entire part 1 and all of presently available part 2. I love how much care everyone involved put into making Makima as unsettling, yet kind at first glance as possible.

Kusunoki, the japanese VA for her, really projects a serenity with no other emotion behind it (but of course Denji only notices the first part). Makima lets him lean on her, both metaphorically and literally, when he's at his lowest in her first proper introductory episode. Of course, we know that it's only because a transactional relationship with him would serve her needs. But Denji is just glad that someone is kind to him, for once.

She does a lot of things he doesn't know how to do for him, like tying his necktie for his first day at work. I saw it as almost motherly, but then I realized that she didn't teach him how to do it on his own on-screen or on any page I recall. Feels like a good parent would strive to ensure their kid could be independent, but this transactional relationship would be much more difficult if Denji was fully independent, I suppose.

And it feels like there were a lot of close shots of her face, as the director understood that of course he'd be closely watching her. Not just bc he likely had to watch other people's faces like a hawk to survive, but because he's currently in a bit of a honeymoon phase with her. I really don't think we've had as many close shots with the other cast members so far.

Also, still not emotionally over the Big Lebowski reference in the opening. It delivers me unbridled joy.
