KuroMahi Week || Day 01: Reunion/Farewell
I didn’t know if I would participate in KuroMahi week because I’ve been busy lately. I started working on this fanfic yesterday and realized that it fit the theme well enough so stayed up all night to finish it on time. This might be the only day I contribute.
“Here, Kuro, try these and tell me if you can taste the cinnamon. They’re fresh. Just be careful because it’s hot.” Mahiru warned his friend as he set a tray of freshly made muffins in front of him. It was hot in the bakery and Mahiru wiped his sweat from his forehead with his apron. His shirt rose slightly as he did so and Kuro caught himself staring. He pulled his eyes away and ate a muffin.
He went back to the old stone oven to put out the flames. Without the fire blazing, it became cooler. From the corner of his eyes, Mahiru watched Kuro finish the muffins like a starving man. He giggled slightly to himself and he was happy to see Kuro enjoy his food. He continued to clean the bakery as he spoke idle with him. Mahiru enjoyed their light conversation and he couldn’t stop smiling. “Thank you for keeping me company while I close the bakery. I shouldn’t take too long.”
They were neighbours and Mahiru couldn’t remember a time they didn’t know each other. Kuro was two years older than him so Mahiru would follow him like a little duckling when they were children. Over the years, they grew closer and he was now his best friend. His heart would make little flips whenever he saw him but Mahiru didn’t realize what it meant yet. He thought it was simpler to live in the moment with Kuro. After all, he couldn’t imagine a future they weren’t together.
“This is the last batch.” Mahiru placed the muffins in a basket and covered it with a cloth. They walked out of the bakery and Kuro watched the road carefully. It was late and they didn’t have much beside the moonlight to guide them. He didn’t say a word but Mahiru could see that he was slightly tense. If Kuro wasn’t with him, Mahiru was certain that he would be afraid as well.
He lightly touched his arm. With a warm smile, Mahiru said: “We should hurry home. People have been disappearing at night and it’s dangerous. Thank you for always walking me home.”
“The bakery is on my way home and I get to rest my legs there. Walking is troublesome.” Kuro said and Mahiru nodded wearily. “You pay me in food too.”
Mahiru knew that Kuro had a kind heart and that was the reason he walked him home. He glanced at his hand and thought of how strong they were. A part of him wanted to hold his hand but he stopped himself. He absentmindedly fiddled with his brown hair to keep his hands busy. “You’re always taking care of me, aren’t you? When I hurt my leg on our fishing trip, you carried me back to the village.”
“I couldn’t leave you.” Kuro mumbled the confession. He wanted to protect Mahiru’s smile because it was precious to him. He thought of another excuse so Mahiru wouldn’t know the feelings behind his actions. “Who else is going to bake me cookies?”
“Well, baking and science are very similar so maybe you can try it with Sensei.” At the mention of his father, Kuro became deathly quiet and a shadow crossed his face. Mahiru bit his lip, wondering if he should’ve mentioned his father. He had seen the family grow distant over the past three months and he wished he could do something to help. “Maybe I can give you two a baking class.”
“Baking and science are very different.” Kuro sighed heavily at his suggestion. The sweets Mahiru created in his bakery were quaint and warm. He couldn’t say the same for his father’s experiment. He looked to Mahiru again and his heart quivered. “Can you make me a promise?”
“Why the sudden question?” Mahiru tilted his head in confusion. But he didn’t question him before he nodded to him. “I’ll do anything for you, Kuro.”
“Just… Please, be careful at night. I might be busy next week and I won’t be able to walk you home. If someone strange approaches you, run. Go to the bakery or your friend’s house.” Kuro said. There was a tinge of desperation in his voice that puzzled Mahiru. Villagers had been disappearing mysteriously but something told him that Kuro’s fear ran deeper than rumours. “Promise me, Mahiru.”
“I promise I’ll be careful.” He stopped walking and stood in front of Kuro. He reached up to cup his cheek in his hand. Mahiru tried to read the emotions in his blue eyes but they were guarded for the first time since he knew Kuro. “Is something troubling you, Kuro? You can talk to me about it. The entire village is afraid but I’m not because I know we’ll protect each other.”
Mahiru took off his long, blue cloak and draped it over Kuro’s shoulders. He hoped that it would keep him warm and comfort him when they couldn’t be together. “I made a promise to you and I want you to give me one too. Will you lean on me when you need help?”
“You take on a lot of responsibilities already.” Mahiru was disappointed by his answer. He felt Kuro’s hand on the top of his head and warmth swelled in Mahiru’s chest in reaction. His hand fell away and he took a step back from him. He whispered, “We’re home. Remember to lock your doors and windows. Goodnight, Mahiru.”
“Goodnight, Kuro.” He said softly back to him. He wished he could spend more time with Kuro but it was already late. Mahiru stood in his doorway and watched Kuro walk to his home next door. Once they were certain that the other was safe, they waved to each other and then went into their home.
The door creaked loudly as Kuro closed the door behind him. His hand clutched over the blue fabric of Mahiru’s cloak. Kuro thought of the promise Mahiru wanted him to make. How could he promise to lean on him when he already made a vow to protect him? He refused to endanger Mahiru by pulling him into the terrible world he knew. Kuro groaned and ran his hand through his hair.
He walked down the steps to the basement where he knew his father was working. His father no longer tried to hide his experiments from him and Kuro missed the days he was blissfully ignorant. He entered his lab and found his father toying with a cat doll. Its broken movement sent a chill down Kuro’s back. He did his best to ignore it and avoid acknowledging the demon.
His father only noticed that he was in the room once he knocked on the table. Kuro dropped a small bag next to the doll. “I collected the stones you asked me to. Can’t you buy them yourself? I told you I don’t want to be involved with these experiments. It’s impossible to make someone immortal so this research is pointless. I don’t want to see people I care for die!”
“There is one thing that is immortal: people’s sins. Sloth, pride, envy, wrath, greed, gluttony, lust and melancholy. That energy is eternal. If I can use people’s sin to create a powerful creature, I will be closer to my goal. It will be my immortal servant. All I need is a better host than this doll.” His father went on but Kuro had stopped listening to him long ago.
Kuro didn’t agree with his father’s goals but there was little he could do to stop him. If he told others about the experiments, they would execute his father. He was a teenager and he didn’t know if he could defy his father. He felt a mixture of fear and loyalty towards the man who raised him. Another sigh escaped Kuro and he started to leave.
His father’s voice stopped him. “You don’t invite your friend Mahiru here anymore.”
“You’re creating vampires in our basement! What if that thing escapes and attacks Mahiru? I want to keep him as far from this as possible.” He turned back and faced his father. He gripped the edge of the table until his knuckles became white. “Don’t hurt him. I’m certain he has never committed a sin that you can use for your experiments.”
“I won’t kill your friend. A human would be a better host for this power than a doll though.” He mused to himself. “Of course, if that human isn’t strong enough, this power could kill him.”
“Stay away from Mahiru!” Kuro hit the doll off the table in his anger. His father barely reacted to his outburst and merely went on to write in his notebook. He snarled at the man but he knew that it was impossible to stop his father once he thought of an experiment. He couldn’t count the number of times he begged his father to stop before he gave up.
Mahiru’s soft smile appeared in his mind. He was trusting and kind hearted, which his father would take advantage. Kuro thought there were nothing he could do to stop his father but maybe he could protect Mahiru. He took a shaky breath and faced his father.
“If your experiment fails and something happens to Mahiru, people will immediately suspect our family. He isn’t like the others you’ve taken. His uncle loves him and he will tear apart this village to find him. I will help him as well.” He strengthened his resolve and went on. “If you want a test subject, use me. You can tell the village I ran away if anything happens and they’ll believe you.”
“For months, you had been against this but you suddenly want to be a part of it now?” He raised a brow at him.
“On the condition that you stay away from Mahiru.”
Mahiru made his way down the street to the shoe cobbler shop Kuro worked at. Lately, Kuro had been acting strange and he was growing more concerned each day. He noticed that he was weaker and had bruises on his arm. He asked him who caused the bruises but Kuro refused to tell him. Even if he wouldn’t tell him, he wanted to do whatever he could for him. He looked down at the lunch he packed for Kuro. Hopefully, he could make him open up while they ate together.
The bell chimed when Mahiru opened the door. He didn’t see Kuro immediately so he walked to the desk where the shop owner was polishing a shoe. Mahiru tapped his shoulder and said: “Excuses me, is Kuro having lunch in the backroom? I made him lunch and I was hoping that I could eat with him. I brought a scone for you as well, Sir.”
“Kuro didn’t come in today. I haven’t heard from him either.” The shop owner told him and Mahiru’s brows drew together in worry. He knew Kuro could be lazy but he wouldn’t skip work without telling someone. Also, Kuro told him he wanted to save money to buy his own home. Mahiru remembered the bruises Kuro had and his imagination began to race. What if something had happened to him?
“I’ll go to his house and check on him!” He told the man. Mahiru ran out of the shop without waiting to hear his reply. He needed to see if Kuro was safe and well. Since they were children, Kuro would take care of him and he wanted to do the same for him. He raced down the street and he was certain the other villagers thought he was mad.
He ignored their stares. The only thing on his mind was Kuro as he raced to his home. He hoped that Kuro had merely lost track of time and he was sleeping in bed. Mahiru reached his door and knocked frantically. Even though he knew it was rude, he didn’t stop knocking until someone opened the door. To his disappointment, it was Kuro’s father who appeared in the doorway.
“Good afternoon, Sensei. Is Kuro here?” Mahiru tried to look behind the man to see if he was in the house. “May I come in? I’m worried about Kuro and I really need to see him.”
“Kuro isn’t here.” Sensei told him. “He left the village. I don’t know where he intends to go.”
“You’re lying,” He couldn’t believe that Kuro would simply leave without telling him or saying goodbye. He knew that he intended to buy a house for himself but he didn’t think he would leave their tiny village. Mahiru pushed his way into the house and stormed to Kuro’s room. He needed to find his friend. He called his name and his voice echoed through the narrow hall.
Mahiru entered his room but it was empty. He bit his lip and he could only stare at the messy room. He scanned the room for any hint of where Kuro could be. On the bed, he found bloodied bandages and Mahiru’s fears worsened. He jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned sharply. Kuro’s father stood in the doorway.
“You should leave, Mahiru. Kuro isn’t here and I don’t think he wants to see you again.”
His voice was cold but his words implied that Kuro was still alive. Mahiru clung to that hope. “I want to see him though! I will find him again even if I have to search for him by myself. Nothing will make me give up on him.”
Kuro did his best not to fidget as Mahiru drew him in his sketchpad. It was still unbelievable to him that his best friend was sitting across from him. A thousand lonely years had passed since he was turned into a vampire and he missed Mahiru. He didn’t know if the person before him was a reincarnation or an ancestor of the Mahiru he knew when he was a human.
“Can I move now? It’s awkward sitting here with you staring at me like that.” He asked with a slight blush. Mahiru nodded to him and put down his pencil. Then, he hopped off his chair to sit on the couch next to Kuro. He leaned against his arm and tilted his sketchbook towards him.
“Thank you for letting me draw you for my art class. I’m not a great artist but I think this is my best one yet. Once I finish colouring this, I can get started on those muffins for the bake sale. You can taste test some as a reward for being my model.” Mahiru offered. He stretched his arm to grab his pencil case on the table because he didn’t want to move from Kuro’s side.
Kuro grabbed the case from him and placed it on his lap. He thanked him with a warm smile and that simple act made him flustered. Mahiru was oblivious to the effect he had on him and went on to colour his drawing. He picked up a blue colour pencil to shade his light hair. His eyes would drift back to Kuro and admire the unique colour of his hair.
He felt Kuro rest his cheek on his head and he knew that he was likely dozing off. He smiled to himself as he pictured the peaceful expression he had while he slept. At first, his lazy nature would annoy him but he grew to love his quirks. They were oddly familiar and comforting. Kuro felt like home to him even when they only first met.
Mahiru lightly stroked his blue hair before he returned to his homework. Unconsciously, he went to colour his eyes with the same turquoise. He stared at the drawing he made for a moment. He felt like the world start to spin around him and he closed his eyes. Memories that had long ago faded started to come back to Mahiru.
He stood and his colour pencils scattered over the ground. His sudden movement startled Kuro and he was confused. Mahiru’s eyes appeared dazed and far away. He took his hands and tried to pull him back. Kuro tilted his face up until their eyes met. “Are you okay, Mahiru? What happened?”
“… You disappeared.” His voice was small and it was almost a whisper. Mahiru brushed his bangs aside so he could see his red eyes better. They appeared blue for a moment and everything became clear to him. His own brown eyes began to fill with tears and they blurred his vision. Kuro tenderly wiped away his tears with his sleeve.
“What do you mean I disappeared? I’m right here.” Kuro kissed his forehead.
He was shocked by how Mahiru gripped his jacket. His hands were trembling as he yelled, “I promised to be careful when you asked me to. You couldn’t do the same when I asked you to lean on me. Then you vanished without telling me goodbye! Now you’ve come back to me a thousand years later as a vampire. Was the reason you left our village because of your father? I searched for you until I… died.”
“Oh God, Mahiru, do remember…” Kuro couldn’t finish because the implications were far too surreal to him. But Mahiru nodded. He had recovered his memories from when they were both human. Guilt fell onto his shoulder because he knew that leaving him must’ve hurt Mahiru. “I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you that I became a vampire. I didn’t want you to see me like this.”
“So, it was better for me to wonder if you were dead?” His retort cut Kuro far deeper than Mahiru intended. “Do you know how scared I was for you? I thought I lost my best friend— the person I loved! We’ve known each other for years but you believed that I would reject you for being a vampire? I never stopped looking for you, even after I died.”
“You never learned how to give up.” Kuro chuckled painfully and hugged Mahiru tightly against his chest. He decided not to tell him about the deal he made with his father because he knew Mahiru would blame himself. He kissed his brown hair and rubbed his back. “We’re together now and I won’t leave you again. I promise.”
“Can you make me another promise?” He tilted his face up to him. Mahiru once again asked, “Will you lean on me when you need help?”
“Of course, you’re my partner now.”
Ya’ll can thank @choc0bunnyqueen for the reincarnation ending or else this would be all angst.

GUESS WHO’S COMPLETELY LATE TO KUROMAHI WEEK!
I’m so sorry for missing day one, I totally forgot the week was even happening ;; When I saw Bee’s art and noticed the week started yesterday, I rushed to write a little something so I won’t miss any more of it. I’ll write something longer tomorrow probably!
My love for flowers is also a curse. Enjoy this little reincarnation/flower shop au!
Day 2: nostalgia/need
::
::
Kuro knows this person.
Or maybe, he feels like he’s supposed to know him.
His brown eyes are familiar. His short hair is familiar. His smile is familiar.
Who is he?
Kuro didn’t remember why he stepped into that flower shop at the first place. The sun was setting outside and he was on his way home, back from another day working his awful office job, when he saw the shop for the first time. Or maybe not, because he passes through this street whenever he’s too lazy to call for a taxi, but this is the first time he noticed it.
“Welcome,” The flower shop employee said, his smile polite, and Kuro had a weird feeling this isn’t the first time he’s seen him.
“Have I met you anywhere before?” he asked without thinking, and the guy blinked owlishly at his question. “It’s my first day here, so I don’t think so. You do seem familiar, now that I’m thinking about it. Hmm, bizarre. So, do you want to buy any flowers?”
“Not really,” Kuro answered nonchalantly, and the guy frowned. “Then why are you here? Thinking simply, you have no other reason to enter a flower shop if you’re not buying any flowers.”
Kuro didn’t know what to say to that because the guy is right. Dammit.
“Guess I’ll leave,” he grunted, turning around and leaving before he could get another word out.
Weird.
::
::
The next day, he entered the shop again. When he stepped through the glass doors, the employee just looked puzzled, tracking his movement with furrowed brows.
“Are you here to get flowers?” he asked, a bit informally, and Kuro didn’t plan to get any flowers. Why was he there again?
Kuro took a good look around the shop, ignoring the employee’s question. The shop was small, wooden, and full to the brim with flowers, pots and various gardening tools. It was a little before sundown, and the sunlight made the shop feel warm. Homey.
“Yeah,” he said out of the blue, and the employee startled. “Do you have any recommendations? For flowers, I mean.”
“Well, it depends on who and for what you’re buying them for,” the employee said hesitantly, but a bit calmer. “If they’re just for yourself, just look around and pick ones you like.”
Kuro nodded. He looked around, but ultimately, he has no taste in anything. Especially flowers.
“What bouquet would you get for yourself?” Kuro asked, and the employee’s eyes flashed with a spark of hope.
He made his way from behind the counter to where Kuro is standing, and looked around a little bit.
“If I have full creative liberty here,” he said and sneaked a glance at Kuro, who nodded in approval, “I’d start with red dahlias.”
The employee reached over and grabbed a few stark red flowers.
“Aren’t these too bright?” Kuro frowned, but the employee’s eyes brightened after he said it. He walked a few steps to his left and knelt down, taking a few beautiful black flowers from their place.
“These are snapdragons,” he explained. “They’re called “Black Prince” snapdragons. They’re not bright but make a big impact, which makes them perfect to mash up with bold colors.”
The employee went back to Kuro, and picked white flowers this time. “Asters.”
He turned around and took out more white flowers from a small flower pot next to the entrance. “Heliotropes.”
He looked around a little more, scanning the shop, and placed the flowers gently on the counter. “I’ll be right back,” he promised, and opened a door at the back of the shop. Once he was gone, Kuro breathed in deeply.
What is it about this stranger showing him flowers that made his heart race like that?
He didn’t know what to say, and yet, it felt like he had too many words, tangled up in the mess of his feelings. He felt an undeniable connection to this place, that had so many pretty flowers and wide glass windows and an employee that loves flowers and loves talking about them with other people.
Before he noticed, the employee came back, with a few purple flowers in his hands.
“The blue lisianthus and blue veronicas are beautiful flowers, but we have so little of them,” he sighed to himself. “And they’re both called blue while their hues are more purple, which tends to annoy my best friend a lot. I hope it doesn’t bother you. Grab me some of the purple larkspurs behind you, will you?”
It doesn’t.
Kuro looked at the flowers behind him, pretty long ones that were shaped like bells, and his mouth shifted upwards. “I like the purple. It reminds me of my younger sister.”
The employee, who noticed the absentmindedly fond tone in Kuro’s voice, smiled and took the flowers from his hands. “That’s sweet.”
Kuro blushed at the contact and swiftly looked away. The employee snickered and took some green plants from somewhere, and walked behind the counter, wrapping up his bouquet.
“I added euphorbias, ivys and hostas to make the colors pop off more,” he elaborated, and tied a white ribbon around the bouquet. He made his way to Kuro and handed him the bouquet, looking at it proudly.
“How much?” Kuro asked, but the employee shook his head.
“I’ll give it to you in exchange for a name.”
Kuro’s heart skipped a beat, and he stared, taking in the employee’s small nervous grin as the sun started to set and his face shone.
“Kuro.”
The employee’s little grin turned into a wide smile.
“Kuro. Like the snapdragons. My name is Mahiru.”
And as he said that, Kuro’s whole world turned upside down.
This person named Mahiru felt like everything Kuro looked for his entire life.
“You know, it’s funny, I actually had a cat named Kuro,” Mahiru rambled, not noticing Kuro’s surprised expression. “He was small, kind of lazy, but actually really lovab--”
“Mahiru,” Kuro said as he stepped a step closer to Mahiru, who immediately quieted. “Thank you for the flowers.”
“... It’s nothing,” Mahiru murmured, cheeks red. Kuro stared into his eyes for one more second before he walked over to the entrance.
“Mahiru...” he mumbled, grasping the door handle. He never wanted to leave. “I’ll be back.”
Hesitation. “I’ll… Be waiting.”
Kuro let himself smile.
The sunset never looked as beautiful as it did then.

Oh HECK I was so excited to write about the flowers and the combinations because buying flower bouquets is one of my weirdest but most enjoyable hobbies! I hope you all enjoyed reading this lil thing <3

KuroMahi Week 2k18 | Day 1 - reunion/farewell:
“Kuro, I'm going out for a bit,” Mahiru called out as he passed by the living room on his way to the door.
Kuro sat up, turning his head to watch Mahiru as he pulled on his shoes by the door.
“What? Where? Why?”
Mahiru looked up, slightly surprised at Kuro’s questions. “I just need a couple of things from the grocery store for dinner.”
Kuro stood up from the couch where he sat and walked over to where Mahiru was. He leaned against a nearby wall, his expression blank.
“I’ll just go by myself. It’s kind of bright outside too, so that’s probably best. And it’s not far from here, so no need to worry about our distance-”
Mahiru’s words were cut off when Kuro suddenly wrapped his arms around him, holding him close and burying his head in the crook of Mahiru’s neck.
“...I'll still miss you.”
If they weren't as physically close as they currently were, Mahiru wouldn't have caught that sentence. Spoken so quietly into his shoulder, Kuro’s words were shy but honest.
Mahiru slowly moved his arms around Kuro, returning the hug and awkwardly patting his back. He was a little puzzled by this sudden display of affection, but appreciated it nevertheless.
Kuro clung to him and it made Mahiru think about how he rarely saw this side of the vampire. Kuro could be rather protective at times and almost clingy - in a way that was never overbearing, though - but he usually avoided being too obvious about it. Right now though, Kuro was plainly showing this side of himself.
Mahiru attempted to pull away moments later, but to no avail; Kuro still held him close and muttered a barely audible wait.
Amused at Kuro’s behaviour, Mahiru laughed lightly. “Kuro, I'll be back in less than fifteen minutes. You have a hard time saying goodbye, don't you?”
“...Don’t say troublesome things like that.”
Kuro’s tone had changed. Sensing that there was something more to Kuro’s actions, Mahiru frowned, but didn't say anything. He waited, hoping that Kuro might provide an explanation.
“Just… come back quickly and safely, okay?”
His eyes widened at that request, not exactly expecting Kuro to say something like that. “Hey Kuro, what's up?”
Kuro sighed wearily, “Mm, nothing, really. It’s a pain to talk about but… I just don't like being away from you for too long.”
Mahiru removed himself from Kuro’s hold and Kuro didn't object the separation this time. He looked up at him with a curious expression.
“Stupid, I know. I just don't like it when you're not here, I guess. Even if it’s only for a little bit. So come back quick, okay? I'm hungry too.”
Mahiru thought he understood what Kuro meant. If he was honest, he felt the same.
Because somehow, Mahiru and Kuro were everything to each other and so much more.
Mahiru smiled lovingly at Kuro which caused him to glance away, a soft blush on his cheeks. He was a bit embarrassed for being this way, but he couldn't help his need to have Mahiru around as much as possible.
“I'll be back soon, Kuro. I promise, okay? I love you.”
Kuro nodded and leaned forward, connecting their lips in a short and sweet kiss. He retracted and reached out to hold Mahiru’s hand briefly, giving a gentle squeeze.
“I love you too.”

KuroMahi Week 2k18 Day 1 Farewell/Reunion
While Mahiru knew this would happen. It was bound to after all with the dangers they experienced one after another day to day.  And yet for all that, it was a shock to him when it actually occurred. It wasn’t dramatic like in the movies. It didn’t feel like that to him at least. Time didn’t slow down, the world didn’t change hue, and most of all it hurt. People always say there is no pain in passing that way but the instant Mahiru felt the sword pierce him, pain exploded everywhere seemingly. Blood came, comrades screamed in horror, and Mahiru dropped. It was pretty quick really. He felt the world blur in mere moments and begin to darken and fade. The brunette was unable to speak. He tried. All that came were wet coughs and more blood. He gasped as his lungs burned begging for oxygen and that was when he realized he was drowning in his own blood it seemed. The noises too began to fade and Mahiru felt immense regret. There were so many things he’d yet to to accomplice. He’d never gotten Sakuya to be his friend again, never understood Tsubaki, and most of all, never told Kuro he loved him. That would haunt him in his grave he knew.
The black spots grew and soon his eyes glazed over. His chest stopped rising and falling and his body so pliant and warm before turned cold and stiff. Kuro who had been there the entire time, stood stockstill. No, no, no, no, no, no. This could not be happening. Not to Mahiru. He was too headstrong, too stubborn, too Mahiru to die. Shirota Mahiru didn’t die. He refused to. After all, who else would Kuro have now?
A deep rage overtook Kuro. He isn’t sure what happened, but everyone was on the floor in minutes. Allies or foe didn’t matter at the moment. What did was the fact that Shirota Mahiru was dead and Kuro was pissed about. It was all that stupid, damn wars fault. And a war needed 2 sides to fight. He only left a bloody mess behind when he picked up the brunettes body and walked away. He couldn’t get a proper burial. The wounds would be impossible to explain to anyone. Kuro decided to bury him instead. He dug him a space right next to his mother's grave at midnight. He did the best with what he could for a tombstone. He inscribed words into a large rock with his own claw. Tears blurred his vision as he worked so he had to be careful not to make a mistake.
‘Look at yourself… If you had somehow died Mahiru would’ve had it all together. And yet I stand here sobbing like a baby…’
“The monster cries. How odd.”
He’d recognize that voice anywhere. His power. And it wasn’t wrong even slightly. What business did a monster like himself have crying? He blinked quickly trying to will back the salty fluid but his body had other plans and it continued to fall mercilessly. He finished the stonehead and put it into the grave. The blunette stayed in the spot until the sun began to rise. It was then he turned into a cat and left knowing he wouldn’t have much choice.
The black cat wandered the graveyard for abit searching emptily and unknowingly for his source of purpose. The source of purpose that had left right alone with Mahiru’s life. It was then Kuro knew, he may well never recover from this. And for some reason he was just fine with that. After all Mahiru was special to him.
“Mahiru… I love you.”
Kuro wandered the city uselessly for what must’ve been at least 10 years after that. The city didn’t change much and it was generally peaceful. Tsubaki and his subclass seemed to have disappeared so Kuro was left to wander harmessly and alone. Well, almost alone, There was always the voice in the back of his mind reminding him of things he’d rather forget.
“He won’t come back. Even if you never move on.”
It’s words continued to haunt him day in and out and it was driving the Servamp mad. The small cat groaned out loud at the words. He just wanted it to stop! And yet, he couldn’t. For it just spoke the truth he wanted so desperately to run from. And so run he did. Eventually though, he ran himself into a hole. A hole called C3. They threatened Kuro with Lily who while back to normal strength, was still no match alone. And so, he went peacefully. Tests and experiments were run but Kuro found he didn’t mind. Even if it hurt, even if he hated it, it kept the agonizing thoughts and endless dreams of Mahiru away. At night, he simply collapsed into bed exhausted and was just too busy to. For a time, it was fine. Kuro was fine with it.
“But would Mahiru be?”
‘If only that would stop talking.’ The vampire thought somewhat bitterly.
Something went wrong one day though. A test went too far and Kuro felt his life force escape with a harsh jolt. His Jin rushed out before his own eyes. They panicked and tried to stop it but he merely had too much. It flooded the facility and with it Japan. It lasted for about 10 minutes before it suddenly just stopped. His empty carcass hit the floor. They had killed a Servamp.
“You just may see him soon.”
Kuro opened his eyes. It was… Mahiru’s apartment? But he hadn’t been here in so long… The blunette shook his head and sat up. Immediately he noticed an odd lightness. He didn’t feel utterly exhausted. He heard movement and recognized the sound of it. The male was up within second and walked right to the kitchen. There he saw a familiar figure.
“Ma...hi...ru…?” He stared gaping widely. There was a slightly short teen stirring what looked to be curry and humming softly.
“Kuro?” The brunette turned faster than Kuro had ever seen him. “Kuro!” Mahiru ran and hugged the taller male. Kuro returned the embrace happily.
He pulled back and smiled at Kuro widely. “Welcome home.”
Kuro smiled back. “Glad to be home.”

#KuroMahiWeek Day 1: A Tale of Beginnings
Prompt: Firsts/Domestic
I don’t know if you noticed, Mahiru. You probably didn’t, because I’ve kinda been trying to hide it. Showing my feelings is a pain. But the truth is that I remember a lot about you like it was yesterday.
I remember the first time I saw you, in the middle of a busy street, the only person in the crowd who paid attention to a tired, helpless cat like me. What a plain kid, I thought. Simple... boring. Maybe even a little stupid. No, you were definitely stupid when you walked over and picked me up. You could’ve just let me lie there, you know. Nothing would’ve happened. But you stupid workaholic went and picked me up anyway... and when you held me in your hands, I couldn’t help feeling a bit weird. Been a while since the last time somebody picked me up like that, you know? Maybe it was ‘cause I missed it. But when you picked me up in your hands, I somehow thought you had to be a good guy.
I remember the first time you brought me home, put that bell around my neck and gave me a name. Your naming sense sucks, I thought. I still think it kinda sucks. But I’m Kuro now. I can’t imagine having any other name anymore. Even if it’s lame and uncreative.
You acted like an idiot, but somehow... it was nice. I wanted to stay at your place and be your cat for some time. Eat that gross cat food you gave me and sleep all day and let you scratch my ears. That sounded like a nice, peaceful life.
I remember the first time you saw me in my real form and started acting even more stupid. Stupid, annoying and troublesome. I couldn’t wait to get away from you loud, stupid pushover. Too bad, I thought. While I was a cat you still seemed kinda nice.
And then I remember the first time I drank your blood... the first time we fought together. The first time I formed a contract. The first time your determination shot through my veins, and I felt a power I hadn’t felt in centuries. I could fight... no, I wanted to fight. I wanted to fight for whatever you were fighting for. Even if it was troublesome.
Your determination’s contagious, Mahiru. That’s what makes you such a pain. But that’s why I can’t stay away from you. I never had anything to live for before you appeared. I never had anything to fight for, and then you came along and pulled me into one mess after the next. You don’t have to save everyone all the time, you know. But you still do, and you make others want to do the same. Looks like heroism’s contagious too. What a pain.
I remember the first time I saw you smile and suddenly felt like I was looking at the sun.
I remember the first time you called me your partner, and I realized I had somebody to belong to now, I wasn’t alone anymore.
I remember the first time you offered to be there for me, the weird grateful feeling that made me want to hug you and curl up under a blanket and never face you again at the same time. The first time I realized I might care about you more than I thought. A lot more, Mahiru.
Feelings are a pain.
I remember the first time you– no, anybody ever helped me face my fears. The first time anybody ever made me feel better about myself, after all these years. The first time I realized I’d rather die than live in a world without you ever again.
The first time you held my hand for no reason except that you wanted to.
The first time you hugged me like you never wanted to let go.
The first time you said “I love you.”
The feeling of panic and dread that spread all through me. Joy, too. Gratitude to get something I could never deserve. You’re too good for me, Mahiru, and you should know that. You could do better than a tired shut-in vampire with a lot of insecurities and emotional baggage. I mean, you’re Mahiru.
I remember your smile, the way you squeezed my hand and told me you’d wait for my answer until I was ready. The truth is, I’ve known the answer for ages. But saying it is a pain. I’m still not good enough for you. I’ll never be. No matter how hard I try.
But you don’t care about that, do you? What a troublesome guy.
Okay then. I give in. I always give in to you, Mahiru. I don’t get you, but looking at you makes me feel like everything will be okay in the end.
Maybe it’s time for another first.
I take a deep breath, lean down and take your hands. “Hey.”
You look up, and I just know. We’ll be fine, somehow.
So I do what I’ve wanted to do for ages and move in for a kiss.
“I love you too, Mahiru.”

KuroMahi Week #1
First/Domestic :)
Kuro liked these kind of days, where him and Mahiru can just relax on the sofa, watch T.V., Mahiru petting him-
Of fucking course Mahiru’s phone had to ring.
“Hello? Misono? E-eh! Mikuni-san!… I see. Okay… Yea, I know! Bye!” Mahiru hung up, got up from the couch, and went to his room to get dressed. Kuro groaned as he laid himself flat on the couch, in the fleeting hopes that Mahiru would forget about him. No dice.
“Kuro! Come on! Mikuni wants us to get him something and meet up at Misono’s place!”
“Hah…? What a pain…. Why didn’t you decline?”
“Because! Mikuni-san seemed really serious about this!”
“Ahh…. Do we have to?”
“Yes! Now, come on! Let’s go! Chop chop!”
“Hai…”

KuroMahi Week || Day 07: AU
Amortentia
Mahiru and Tinker watched all the other female students from both their houses, surround the little steaming cauldron in a thrill of emotion. The brunette sighed in disbelief: all that mess just for a silly love potion. She was well aware of the strength and the unbelievable properties of that little heart-bubbling fluid, but, putting aside the mix of despair and fear that would inevitably bring anyone to use it without thinking it twice, she wasn't still able to understand how they could wish for a “fake infatuation” instead of “true love” by putting their egoism and selfishness in front of the sentiments of the one they proclaim to love. If there was a thing Mahiru learned from when she arrived at Hogwarts five years ago, was certainly that wizards, against all the espectetions, likes to make things more complicated than they should be. She took a look at Misono and tried to stop herself from giggling push a hand against her own mouth: he - as the other boys - avoided the idea of join that ridiculous crowd and decided to stay in his place in order to appear disinterested, but the way he was trying to look over their classmates’ heads standing on his tiptoe, was totally blowing up his cover. Lily’s voice, coming from behind her, woke up the brunette from her thoughts making her blush instantaneously. Mahiru wasn't still able to approach him as a teacher either than a friend, especially after what happened the year before in the Shrieking Shack. Thank goodness, they were all still alive. << Shirota Mahiru-chan, would you like to tell us about amortentia? >> << Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in the world. It is distinctive for its mother-of-pearl sheen, and steam rises from the potion in spirals. Amortentia smells different to each person, according to what attracts them. >> << Very good! Would you like to tell us what you smell out of the cauldron? >> Mahiru’s eyes opened up in shock. “ Damn it Lily! Didn't espect that from you! You really are a Servamp after all. ” she thought before taking her decision. Thinking simply, it was better not to seem embarrassed by it and drag less attentions from their classmates. Reluctant under the firm gaze of all her companions, the young Seeker approached the cauldron and smiled, feeling immediately taken away by the illusory properties of the infusion. << I smell... Lavanda soap... This must be hamburger... broomstick’s polish and... >> She was listing them dreamily when a sudden realization got her screaming and blushing at the same time. A familiar scent, too familiar in her opinion... << WET FUR?!? >>
Here's my only personal post for the " KuroMahi Week ". This is just Mahiru's part of the story, because I didn't have the time to complete it. So, if you are interested in Kuro's version just add a like.
❤️ Happy KuroMahi Week everybody. ❤️

KuroMahi Week || Day 05: Protection/Comfort
Mahiru tried to keep a pressed smile on his face as he counted the coins for the irritating customer. He took a job as a clerk for some extra money and he wanted to stay professional. The upperclassman didn’t leave immediately after he handed him his change. For the past few days, he had come in and made Mahiru uncomfortable. He would visit several times a day as well but Mahiru couldn’t do anything but endure his advances.
“Are you working late again?” He asked and Mahiru groaned inwardly. When he reached out to touch his hand, Mahiru took a sharp step back. He was glad that there was a counter between them. “I saw you walking home alone yesterday. That’s dangerous so how about I walk you? We go to the same school so you can trust me.”
“That’s okay. My boyfriend’s going to walk me home tonight.” Mahiru always made sure to bring Kuro up in their conversations but the upperclassman stayed persistent. Why couldn’t the man just give up? He knew he couldn’t be rude but his patience was already strained. “Pardon me, but there’s a line behind you. If you don’t need anything else, please go.”
Mahiru was relieved when he left without making a scene. He sincerely hoped that he wouldn’t return as well. While the customer was annoying, he couldn’t quit without feeling guilty. The store was already shorthanded so he couldn’t leave without causing problems. The owner was also a family friend and he promised he would help them for the summer.
But he didn’t let any of those emotions show as he helped the other customers. Mahiru glanced at the clock and he was glad that it was almost time for his break. He waited for his co-worker to come and take over for him. From the corner of his eyes, he saw his upperclassman walk through the door and swore beneath his breath.
The minute the clock turned to five, Mahiru locked up his register. He didn’t bother to wait for his co-worker and walked briskly to the backroom. Mahiru tried not to make eye contact with him as he walked past him. He opened the door but couldn’t close it before he placed his foot in the way to stop his escape. He bit his lip and then tried to take a deep breath to calm himself.
“I’m sorry but this room is for employees only. If you need help, ask one of the other workers. I’m on my break.” Having enough of his advances, Mahiru pushed him roughly out of the doorway and slammed the door shut. He was glad that he was alone in the breakroom so he could compose himself again. He slumped against the door and took out his phone to call Kuro.
“Mahiru?” Kuro answered immediately and hearing his voice calmed his nerves. The smooth timber in his voice made him feel safe even if Kuro was all the way home. “What is it? You don’t usually call on your break. Did he come back? Do you want me to stop by?”
“No, it’s okay. I can handle it on my own.” Mahiru hoped that Kuro wouldn’t be able to tell that he was a little unsettled. He wished that he had Kuro with him but he didn’t want to lean too heavily on him. He couldn’t bring Kuro into the shop in his cat form and it would take a lot of energy for him to stay in his human form in the daylight.
“Mahiru, are you sure?” Kuro’s voice begged him to ask for help and that kindness touched Mahiru.
“He can’t do anything to me with everyone watching so don’t worry about me. It’s just… Can you pick me up after my shift? I’m sorry to make you walk all the way here.” Mahiru said apologetically even though he had no reason to. He was glad that Kuro readily agreed and glanced at the clock. They spoke over the phone until his break was over.
He wanted to talk to Kuro more but he knew that he needed to go back to work. Before he disconnected the call, Kuro reassured him. “Mahiru, everything’s going to be alright. I won’t let him do anything to you. Just stay safe until I can pick you up.”
“Thanks, Kuro.” Mahiru smiled at his words. He always knew what he needed and he was glad that he spoke with him. Feeling better, Mahiru returned to work. He had to groan a little when he saw that the customer hadn’t left yet but forced himself to be professional. Kuro would pick him up and, hopefully, seeing them together would deter him. Luckily, he only had a few hours until his shift was over.
It was dark outside and Mahiru didn’t see Kuro anywhere. He saw his upperclassman waiting in front of the store and Mahiru steeled himself as he walked outside. He hoped that Kuro would arrive soon so they could go home. Mahiru tried not to draw attention to himself as he waited in front of the store.
“Mahiru, are you going home now?” When the upperclassman approached him, Mahiru considered running back into the store. He wasn’t working so he levelled an irritated glare at him as he approached. He was a human and an upperclassman so Mahiru couldn’t use his Lead or fight him. “My offer to walk you home still stands.”
“My boyfriend will be here soon so there’s no need. You should be getting home because it’s getting dark.” Mahiru tried to brush him off. He flinched visibly when he placed his hand on his shoulder. When he tried to pull away, he grabbed his arm roughly.
“C’mon, there’s no need to be coy. You don’t need to make up a boyfriend just to make me jealous. I like you already.” His smile made a chill run up his back and Mahiru pushed him away roughly. He took a step back and he bumped into someone’s chest. Mahiru looked over his shoulder and was relieved to see that it was Kuro. He wrapped his arm around his waist and held him protectively.
“Who are you?” The upperclassman yelled and Mahiru instinctively pressed closer to Kuro.
Kuro didn’t answer and tilted Mahiru face towards him instead. He kissed him deeply and Mahiru knees went weak from the sudden kiss. His lips forced his open but Mahiru was more than willing. He forgot about the person watching him under Kuro’s kiss and closed his eyes. He broke the kiss softly but the glare he gave the upperclassman was hard as stone. “I’m his boyfriend.”
Mahiru had never seen Kuro so possessive before. He stood in front of him protectively and there was a cold glint in his eyes. Kuro whispered something in the upperclassman’s ear. Mahiru didn’t hear what he said but the fear that appeared in his eyes was telling. Kuro walked back to Mahiru and took his hand. “Let’s go back home. He won’t be bothering you anymore.”
“Thank you,” Mahiru said with a relieved smile and rushed to keep pace with him. When Kuro noticed, he slowed his steps. He saw the conflicting emotions on his face and he knew that Kuro hated being aggressive. He squeezed his hand before he let go to hug his arm. “I’m sorry I let it get this far.”
“Don’t be sorry. That guy was a creep.” Kuro stopped walking and faced him. He gently caressed his cheek and kissed his forehead. “I don’t care if it’s a vampire or a regular creep that’s after you, I’m going to protect you. You attract a lot of attention but I knew there’s no helping that when you’re so cute. Though he was easier to deal with than vampires.”
“What did you say to him?” Mahiru asked out of curiosity and Kuro shrugged.
“He knows better than to bother you again,” Kuro said instead of answering. He wrapped his arm around his shoulder and changed the subject. “Being a scary vampire is tiring so how about you treat me to a nice dinner when we get home? Ramen isn’t even that hard to make.”
“Fine,” Mahiru relented with a small smile. “Thanks for protecting me.”
I was debating how Kuro would react and I was choosing between him being calm or possessive as hell.

It’s me again... trying to catch up to Kuromahi week without passing out first :D
This is a very very short superhero au drabble, and I actually find it funny how when I heard the word chained up my immediate reaction was “superhero au”. Hope you enjoy!
::
::
This situation isn’t ideal. Mahiru would even go to the extreme and say it is less than ideal. Which, in the life of a superhero, kind of sucks.
And the guy who’s keeping watch over him isn’t even looking at the door. Rookie mistake. Licht would kick down that door like it was tall grass in a few minutes. He just needs to find Mahiru first.
Mahiru’s list of priorities right now:
Get out of these chains/get freed by Licht
Kick this sidekick guy into unconsciousness
Find out what’s going on while he’s chained up
Well, this guy here is sitting on the other side of the long dinner table Mahiru is chained to, so Mahiru’s only chance to get close to him is by freeing his hands from these annoying chains. The problem is Mahiru doesn’t have a way to get freed, and there isn’t a single crashing sound which means Licht hasn’t arrived yet.
So far, so good.
“So,” Mahiru says, resorting to the best thing he could do at the moment which is run his mouth until something happens, “Why am I here?”
The guy keeping watch over him is reading a book, but his eyes are staring at the same spot and Mahiru suspects he’s been reading the same sentence ever since he opened that book. He has heavy eye bags and bloodshot eyes, and he looks so tired and disinterested Mahiru has to wonder how an unmotivated guy like this starts working for villains.
“Guess,” the guy says simply, yawning. He looks like he could really use a nap.
“What does a guy like you do for villains? You don’t seem like the villainous type,” Mahiru tries, after a few failed tries at getting out of these damned chains. The guy just shrugs.
“I need the money,” he says, not moving his eyes from his book. He sighs, and puts the book down. ‘What a pain,” he complains, splaying himself on the table. Mahiru comes to the conclusion that this guy needs to check his priorities (like Mahiru did), because going to jail is probably not preferable even if you’re getting a little more money than a usual side-job.
“There are better ways out there to get money,” Mahiru advises, and the guy just sighs again.
“This is the only job that pays fast.”
‘Why do you need money so much? Are you in a really tight financial spot?”
“Not really, but I’m supporting my brother who’s in college,” the guy explains. “He’s an acting major, and he’s having such a good time. I want him to continue doing the things that bring him joy, but that costs a lot of money.”
Mahiru quiets, because he didn’t expect that answer. “You’re a much better person than what this job requires,” he mumbles. “Supporting your brother’s dream is a really sweet thing to do. But because it’s so sweet, I really advise you to find another side job, at least one that won’t get you in jail.”
The guy looks at Mahiru for the first time, and smiles. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll get out of this just fine.”
Before Mahiru could respond, a loud explosion noise echoes through the building and the guy sits up and stretches. Licht.
“That’s my cue. It was good talking to you, Mahiru Shirota.”
The guy walked away, and suddenly disappeared from Mahiru’s view in a flash. Mahiru gets the feelings the guy he was just talking to was way better than he let on.
What wouldn’t a good brother do for his little brother’s college tuition, right?
