The incoming storm...

The sitar crashed into a million pieces. It had been a gift from her beloved son. Her very own flesh and blood. And he betrayed her. Meenakshi was furious and things flew out of her hands as if she was a tornado. She felt cheated. No, she was back stabbed. Her son not only was in love with a girl she hated more than anything else in this universe, he had proposed her in a gathering of distinguished guests.

So this, Meenakshi thought was a reason he had not agreed to host the party at home. So that the girl and her family could attend. He had planned the proposal in such a way that everyone got to know about it. Yes! He had planned it very well. He had played her very well. Not giving away any hint till the last moment. He had manipulated his mother and his entire family for his own selfish motive!

Now Meenakshi will not be able to keep it under wraps nor will she be able to twist the turn of events in her favour. Not that it was something new to her. She had broken alliance for her younger son Kunal, not once but twice earlier. But Abir was a different ball game. He was smart, he was shrewd and he had Meenakshi's Genes. She will not be able to manipulate him. She had never been able to. He knew his mother in and out whereas it had always been a challenge for Meenakshi to gauge him. Probably, she should have focused more on him rather than investing her time in Kunal and his prospective brides.

Of all the girls in this world, he had to choose the one girl Meenakshi detested. Why? Why Mishti? Here Meenakshi was trying to bring her downfall and Abir brought her right into their world... again!

And Mishti? She agreed! She accepted his proposal! How could she?

"How could she?" Yelled Mrs. Maheshwari, Mishti's badi maa. "How could she do this? How can she just forget everything that Meenakshi ji has done to trouble our family? How can she be in love with the elder brother of a guy she refused alliance with? How could she..."

"Please Calm down, Rajashree. Let her get back home. I am sure we will find a solution. But first we have to discuss this matter with her. None of us had any idea that things had reached this stage. We always believed the two of them were good friends and were working for a good cause. That's why we had given her all the freedom in this world." Said Mishti's bade papa, Mr. Maheshwari.

"But she can not love Abir." The lady was hysterical. She was beyond herself.

"Don't panic. Let her get back home. I promise, we will sort it out."

Right then, Mishti walked in. Abir was right behind her.

"Abir?" Mr. Maheshwari

"Hello Sir!" Said Abir. "I was just dropping Mishti home. I know it's quite late and you must have been worried for her. So I thought of stopping by and talk to you. May I have your time... sir?"

"Even we wanted to talk to you. The stunt that you pulled today evening?"

"I proposed your daughter, sir."

"And you think that was a right thing to do?"

"We are best friends. We love each other. We understand each other like no one else does. I think that's enough to think of each other as life partners."

"You think that's enough? I expected better than this from you, Abir. Have you both forgotten what all our families have gone through in the recent past?"

"I understand your concern... sir."

" Abir, you are a good man. We all love you son. But you must understand, you are fighting a lost battle. This alliance will not materialise."

"We will never be able to forget the things Meenakshi ji said when the engagement with Kunal broke. She said no one will ever marry our daughters. And today her very own son has proposed marriage. " said Mrs. Maheshwari.

"Look Abir, I understand your feelings. But please understand... unless we are doubly sure that our daughter will be respectfully treated at her in law's house we will not let her marry. And we know how much Meenakshi ji hates our daughter. I think you may leave now. Mishti will see you off. Afterall, you are her dear friend." Mr. Maheshwari said.

Abir patiently listened to what Mishti's parents had to say. Mishti was now visibly upset. But he was not the one to easily give up. He had weathered every storm, braved all the hurdles that had come in his pursuit of love. He had won over Mishti's love and her trust. Now there was no turning back.

"What if Maa herself comes and requests for this alliance?" He said.

"How is that possible?" Varsha Maheshwari

"Why will she do that?" Shaurya Maheshwari

"Impossible! It will never happen. You are being too hopeful. She will never compromise. " Jasmeet.

"Sir... I am asking you. What if Maa comes? Will you then think about it? "Said Abir.

"Mishti's honour is my priority. If you can guarantee that..."

" Your daughter and her dignity is my top priority sir. I will never take her for granted. "

"Why do you think she will come, Abir? She doesn't even like our daughter. "

Mishti was on the verge of crying when he pulled her into a hug. And she melted in his arms. In that brief moment, all her worries and apprehensions vanished into thin air. She laid her head on his bare chest and listened to his rhythmic heartbeats. That had a soothing effect on her. He had the knack of calming her without even uttering a single word. A sweet smile lingered on her face when she had seen him off.

Her immense trust in him gave him the strength to persist. And he told her so. Abir promised Mishti a lifetime of togetherness before he kissed her good night. He knew, that a new battle was waiting for him at home. He felt as if he had just entered the eye of the storm when he set foot inside the threshold of Rajvansh Villa. It was all quiet and still.

It was morning and Abir braced himself for the onslaught that was to come. There was an ire silence in the house. He went about his daily routine, as if it was just another day. It was from his househelp Jugnu that he came to know what all had transpired before he got in the previous night. He went to greet his best friend... his Nanu. The only sane person in the entire family who actually had the right advice to give, always.

Meenakshi was already there when he walked into Nanu's room.

"...but you should have told me earlier Bapuji. I am sure you knew everything beforehand. I can't believe Abir didn't confide in you."

"But Meenu.."

"Good morning guys! Why has the sitar gone silent today? Or is the sitar gone? Now, don't tell me you dropped it again? " Abir said rolling his eyes.

"Stop feigning innocence Abir." His mother was furious with rage would have been an understatement. "Don't you see what you did yesterday was wrong."

"Why do you say so, Maa? What was wrong with the proposal? I think it was really classy."

"Its not about how you proposed. It's about whom you proposed. You know about Mishti."

"Oh yes! Such a sweetheart!"

"That girl rejected your younger brother."

"That's because they were not compatible. Thank God for Mishti's idea of courtship. You didn't even take it seriously then. But see.. here we are... together!"

"And what makes you think you two are compatible?"

"But how can you marry her?"

Meenakshi was exasperated. She didn't believe her father was on Abir's side. This grandfather- grandson duo was ganging up against her!

"No need to even say 'please'. You can just accompany us. I think that will be sufficient for them. They are not really looking forward to a sorry or please from you. They just need assurance that you will accept their daughter as your own."

"So you have already done the talking."

"Even I am self reliant... just like you, Maa."

"Then why do you even need me to come with you?"

"They want you to come."

"I will not go there."

"Maa, you are a business woman. You know a good opportunity when it comes by, right? "

"Yes. But how does it matter here?"

"Because I am giving you an opportunity. Since you don't understand sentiments, I will offer you a once-in-a-lifetime deal."

Meenakshi was puzzled and so was Nanu. He became the wise elderly gentleman that he was. "Abir... be careful what you say, my child!"

"I know what I am doing Nanu." To his mother, he said, "You have about 10 seconds to decide. Either take it or leave it."

He continued in a very serious tone. "If you get me married to Mishti, I'll give up my search for Baba.

Why are you so surprised? Did you really believe that I will never know you had spies on my trail? That whenever I got any leads on his whereabouts, your informers tried to mislead me every single time?"

" I don't know what you are talking about, Abir."

"Now you don't act all innocent, Maa. I very well know what you have been upto. Please don't get me wrong. I am not giving up on my Baba for Mishti's sake. I am just trying to do what you had always wanted me to do. I will stay within your eyesight. I'll get involved in the family business."

Abir had no intention of forgetting his baba. He wanted to talk to him more than ever before. But what he had waited for all these years, could wait for a little more time. He was weighing his options and found that more that trying to find what is already lost, he needed to salvage what he still can.

"Yes. You heard me right. It's mine too... as you always say. It's time I should take over your responsibilities. The way you took over from Nanu, years ago. I need not worry about the NGO anymore. Mishti is there to take care of that. So I will now handle the business and be the good responsible elder son that you have always desired."

" But remember one thing, Maa. The day Baba walks back into our lives, which I believe he will, I will have my questions ready for both of you."

Meenakshi was shell shocked with this sudden development. She had not anticipated this kind aggression from Abir. She felt as if she was hit by a storm, all of a sudden.

Nanu could see the smirk on Abir's face. He had played his cards very well. And the satisfaction of having won fair and square, showed in his demeanour. But what Meenakshi could focus on, was the steely resolve in his eyes. He was determined to have his way, as always. Abir was known to take stand for what was right. But this, was HIS life! Meenakshi could sense the reigns of control slipping from her firm grip.

"Now let's hurry up. We can't make the Maheshwaris wait. We already have a not-so-good reputation. We leave in 10 minutes. I'll be waiting for you both downstairs."

He turned to go and stopped in his tracks. Turned back and said apologetically, " oh! Pardon me, I almost forgot to mention. We are going to propose not one but two alliances today. Me and Mishti and Kunal and Kuhu.

After that, we can go to the office. You will have to make the necessary announcements there as well." And with that, he casually stepped out of the room.

Meenakshi was as pale as a sheet. As if, she had seen the worst nightmare.

Her father spoke up. "Meenu, the girls do not mean any harm. But this controlling streak that you have, might just end up breaking the family. It's time, you should step back."

"I know, Bapuji. It's time to take a backseat... for now."

A new power centre had emerged for the Rajvansh family and their business. ABIR RAJVANSH WAS TAKING CHARGE! The man of his words!

Apparently Mishti and Abir are going to stay away from the Rajvanshs post-marriage...

Even though it's a long shot and I do want a lot of the family members to be present at their wedding, it would be such a breakthrough. It would mean Meenakshi's worst fear coming true, Abir leaving them but the ultimate reason for it will not be Mishti but Kunal and Meenakshi themselves and I want that. I WANT THAT. DO IT.

Like I said, a longgg shot but I am ready for it. Bring in their nuclear family. Away from the toxicity.

But also, that's going to be so difficult to watch. Ugh, Abir loves his family too much. Nanu must be so upset. But they need the distance. They need to let go of their "I wanna control you at all times"
