Healer (Korean Drama)
I just finished “Healer” a week ago, and while my heart is still burning let me write all my thoughts. Disclaimer: This is going to be biased because I love Ji Chang Wook. I don’t care if that would make me unrealiable, but you certainly have to watch Healer to know the level of my biases HAHAHA
“Healer” has been a recommended drama for almost 2 years, and for some reason I was holding to that “I don’t want action dramas” so I didn’t try watching it. But because I fell in love with Ji Chang Wook’s acting in Suspicious Partner, I decided to watch his other dramas— obviously— to find more reasons to fall harder.
What was the story about?
There was a trained night courier under the name “Healer”, who is hired by prominent people to do certain jobs for them. His work included stealing evidences, tracking enemies, fighting gangsters, and the like. Also, he is being instructed by a female hacker who gives all the information for the night courier to be able to do his job. But one day, he met this small entertainment company journalist who provided more meaning to his interconnected tasks and who also happened to be a huge part of his past.
My Opinions:
Ji Chang Wook is the freaking man! He can make anyone’s heart flutter in any way— may it be with his cheesy lines and swoon-worthy gazes, or his action skills. I don’t know why but whatever he does, whether he’s serious or goofy, he will just find his way to your heart.
For the character, Seo Jung Hoo (Ji Chang Wook), I actually feel bad for him. It’s like some people conspired with each other to make his life worse, and since he was able to manage it people are creating more instances to make his life worse. And I think that really happens in real life, God will always give the biggest problem to his bravest soldiers. 😂
Oh and kudos for his double (stunt man), good job! He was really good! It’s not a joke jumping building from buidling, rolling, punching, and doing all the stunts!
I’ve watched Park Min Young in City Hunter and since she was once in relationship with Lee Min Ho, and with her acting skills in the first 3 episodes of “Healer”, I was really determined that I will not watch the drama. But because of Ji Chang Wook I decided that I should just forget about her and just satisfy myself with Ji Chang Wook’s acting. #Grudge However, as episodes went by I realized that she is a good actress. Whenever her tears are cascading down her cheeks, I can’t help but feel the pain as well. Or whenever she’s being stubborn or acting cute, I can’t help but also smile with her.
For her character, I love how Chae Young Shin (Park Min Young) understands the world so much. She knows that she can’t be too reactive, that’s why she didn’t try to ask Seo Jung Hoo (Ji Chang Wook) questions. And she also knows that she’s a person who’s capable of being hurt so she seeks comfort from the people she trusts. I also liked the part wherein she’s too bossy with Park Bong Soo (Ji Chang Wook) but she’s really looking up to Kim Moon Ho (Yoo Ji Tae). You will see the versatility of her acting with the way she addresses them.
If there is one character that I pity the most in the drama, it’s Kim Moon Ho’s (Yoo Ji Tae) character. He wanted to set things straight but he also knows that it will also affect his brother.
Next to him, I also pity his brother Kim Moon Sik (Park Sang Won) because he just happened to be locked up in the situation, he already received so much from the Elder and he tried his best to protect his brother even though he knows his brother will keep on exposing the identity of the Elders.
I also like the fact that it was Jo Min Ja (Kim Mi Kyung) whom they made the hacker. It shows how they are not that sexist.
Also, I’ve noticed that even though most of the casts are male, important roles are given to the women
For the plot, I was able to see how the story was revolving. Unlike other dramas, this drama also gives you a subtle outline of how it would progress. I don’t how if I am supposed to be happy that they alternate suspense, romance, and action— honestly it develops the bipolar in me. Nevertheless, I love how this drama was able to hook its audience by appealing to the attention span of the audience.
For the dialogue, they didn’t make it a point that one actor will give out a hard blow then the other should answer with the same intensity. They made sure that they were able to incorporate real life dialogue in the drama. Although, I admit there are times when Kim Moon Ho (Yoo Ji Tae) is having an intense exchange of dialogue with Kim Moon Shik (Park Sang Won), I know the writer can make it more intense and really showcase a more nemesis leveled conversation. But suddenly Kim Moon Ho (Yoo Ji Tae) will just glare while his jaws are shaking.
Cinematography-wise they were able to capture the right angle where the actor will be able to show his or her emotions, and since it is dark-themed drama, I think they didn’t immerse themselves to color grading that would color things differently. Instead of color grading, I think they focused more on the angles wherein they will be able to provide a better view of the action scenes while maintaining the identity of the double stunt men. (hehehe)
For the OST, I like listening to “Eternal Love” by Michael learns Rock, “You” by Ben, and of course my baby’s song, “I will protect you” by Ji chang wook. I know one day I might hear this song somewhere and find it hard to remember due to the enormous number of Korean Dramas I’ve watched, but I know in myself that I will be able to hum the tunes because I really liked these songs!
There are 2 things that I didn’t like about Healer, first is the fact that Chae Young Shin (Park Min Young) cannot to meet her mother Choi Myung Hee (Do Ji Won) because the mother will have seizures once she sees her. I MEAN, hello, what triggers her seizure is the feeling of pain of losing her daughter, so I think seeing her daughter will not trigger that seizure because it gives other emotions. Besides, I have a brother who sometimes get seizure attacks, and it looks different from how she did it. So it’s quite questionable, although I am not sure probably depending on the kind of mental impairment that you have then that would measure how much intense the seizure is. And the second thing is that WHY IS THIS DRAMA UNDERRATED? It’s so beautiful, why is this not shown in the Philippines???
2 lessons I’ve learned from Healer himself is that, you should not only expect the worst, but you always have to prepare for the worst. You should not only have plans up to letter D, but you may have until letter Z. Always remember that you don’t have a real life Ahjumma who will be there to rescue you with her hacking skills. You know get what I’m saying?
Second lesson I learned, STOP being reactive to a lot of things, it will just allow you to make wrong decisions. Always think things over before you react on it.
