Tour de stationery
The bed was far from comfy and so I was thankful when the alarm went off at 7 (or, according to Alex, 'at 5am??!' due to +2h timezone) so I had a reason to get up. It took almost an hour to convince him that I will starve to death if we don't go for breakfast and in the meantime, I attempted yoga. But without touching the carpet cause it was pretty questionable. The breakfast was free from the hotel. Maybe to compensate for our missing shower door?
At breakfast, Alex made friends with an old man who was having a cigarette. In a mix of Russian, Romanian and English while I just listened and tried to get through my coffee to feel a bit more human.
First things first, we needed to find some suncream. It didn't take too long but somehow, I smeared it all over my crop top so the white stains on my boobs now look extremely questionable. We found out yesterday that couple of friends who are also coming to the wedding on Saturday are in Sofia too so we set out to meet them. Big kudos to this city for planting Linden trees around the roads. It smells really nice although my hayfever is not happy and my brain is itchy. We were curious is Rasto and Eli have any touristy plans because we are completely winging it and have no plan whatsoever. Turns out, their plan was as non existent as ours so now we were winging it together.
They took us to a pub in a park that they visited yesterday. The walk there lead past a famous church which we tried to go into but Eli's dress was too short and the guys were wearing shorts so, somehow, I was the only one allowed in (in a crop top). Since there was obviously no hope for our souls, we settled for beer.
We also realised we're planning to take the same train to Burgas the next day. We let Alex book the tickets (1st class!) online as he is the only one able to read Cyrillic and that was sorted.
One lunch later, we stopped for another drink/ coffee, which is when we realised that the groom to be will also be landing in Sofia this evening. And well.... Not like we have anything better to do, right? How about we go wait for him with a ridiculous sign? As he later pointed out 'only you guys can spend your one day in Sofia by looking for a stationery shop where people speak English.' like it's hard...
Let me put it this way... The sign involved a lot of pink cardboard, pink glitter glue that wouldn't dry, some very inappropriate inside jokes translated into Bulgarian and tears of laughter. While we were working on this masterpiece, Filip (the groom to be), informed us that he actually won't have time to meet us tonight and he'll see us in Sozopol before the wedding. Oh sweet summer child...
I'll be honest, our signs got many laughs and we were debating whether he still had enough time to uninvite us from the wedding but he seemed to love it. And since we were already there, he said he might as well have a pint with us. The mosquitoes were rather unfortunate because by the time we finished our drink and pizza, we were eaten alive but what can you do right... Buy a repellent I suppose. That's definitely on the agenda tomorrow.
Wish us luck with the train, we were told that the train tracks sometimes get stolen.

I'm trying to learn italian and I was wondering if you know some ways (like tv shows or books) that could help
Hi! Wow, kudos! I think your idea is the right one - when learning a language, following some kind of textbook to understand the grammar and working on vocab are the most important things, but watching TV, reading and listening to music are extremely useful ways to both keep motivated and learn about the culture (for beginners) and discover new words and realize how far youve come (intermediate level and beyond).
Now, the problem with Italy is that a) it’s really not online a lot as a country and b) TV shows are often about ‘exotic’ realities like Sicily, which means that they’re not ideal for language learners because they will feature a specific kind of Italian that’s often much harder than the standard one (hell, I need subs for some movies). On the plus side, Italy’s got a vibrant music scene, and ferreting around the web you’ll find both the original lyrics and (sometimes) an English translation.
So, here are a few ideas to get you started.
TV shows
Gomorra - linguistically speaking, often difficult, since it’s based in Naples, but a gritty story and an interesting insight into Italy’s criminal underbelly.
Il commissario Montalbano - again, there’s a lot of Sicilian here, but this is really a show most Italians watch and it’s absolutely delightful. The books, of course, written by Andrea Camilleri, are much better, but unless you’re a motivated C1 please read them in translation. Oh, and there’s a spinoff for thirsty people featuring a younger commissario.
Romanzo Criminale is both a series and a movie - again, there are some difficult terms because it’s set in Rome and it focuses on a criminal family, but it’s certainly a story worth watching. Addic7ed’s got English subs for both seasons.
Don Matteo is also a detective story of some kind, but a lot more light-hearted. It stars 1980s heart-throb and current national treasure Terence Hill as an unusual priest with an interesting life.
(Sorry, got distracted.)
(Jesus, though, look at him.)
(Okay, one more second.)
Un medico in famiglia was an immensely successful series which ran for ten years and finished (I think) in 2016. It’s a sort of family sitcom with famous actor Lino Banfi. A bit naff for me, but definitely steeped in reality and a good choice for language learners.
Elisa di Rivombrosa ravaged the country like a petticoated storm about ten years ago - a classic soap-opera set in the 1790s, it features all the tropes of the genre - star-crossed lovers, war, betrayal - if you can think about it, it’s there.
Medici: Masters of Florence was originally shot in English because it stars Dustin Hoffman (???) and King in the North Richard Madden, but you should be able to find the Italian version (most of the other actors are Italian, so it’s not really a dubbing). From a quality point of view, it was nowhere near other big historical productions like The Borgias or Versailles, but it was okay, and also focused on people we normally know nothing about - not famous Lorenzo il Magnifico, but his cunning and ruthless father, Cosimo, played by Richard.
Finally, remember that the Italian dubbing industry is probably the best in the world - personally, I feel like a good way to learn languages is to watch a favourite show you almost know by heart in another language. That way, you don’t have to focus on the story and can sit back and not get frustrated if you don’t understand a key scene or something, because hey, you know what’s happening already. Humour is probably the hardest thing to translate, so I’d stay away from sitcoms, but as for drama, we’ve got it all - Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, The Mentalist, CSI - if you’ve got money to splurge on DVDs, just watch with the Italian dialogue and English subs at first, then turn on Italian subs. That’s basically my favourite language learning exercise.
And also: as I said, Italy’s not really online yet, and if you don’t live in the country I don’t think you’ve got access to RAI content from their website, but some things are available on Youtube. For instance, you can find complete episodes (look for “puntata intera”) of Piero Angela’s documentaries (which are always well-made and really interesting), the Italian X Factor, Undercover Boss (Boss in incognito), Junior Masterchef Italia, game show L’eredità, and also Report’s tough investigative journalism, Daria Bignardi’s interviews with VIPs and celebrities, and clips of popular political programs such as Ballarò, Annozero, Porta a Porta, Crozza nel paese delle meraviglie (which is more satire, but still) and so on.
Movies
I won’t give you a list of Italian movies you should absolutely watch, because there are dozens of good lists around the web already, but recent favourites of mine include Le fate ignoranti (or, really, anything by Ferzan Ozpetek, one of the best directors Italy has to offer), Pane e tulipani, and most of all La meglio gioventù, a majestic tour de force which manages to be absolutely everything - a fascinating story full of unforgettable characters, a sharp social critique denouncing issues as diverse as the far right, political corruption and the shameful treatment of mentally ill people, and a must-see insight into Italian history of the past forty years - if you’ve ever wondered why Italy is the way it is, please watch this movie. It will add years to your life and it’s good for language learning, because most characters speak a clear, standard Italian and not at the usual breakneck speed, either.
Books
Italian writers are generally very creative with their language, so it’s always hard to rec books to language learners. A good bet are post-war novels, which were deliberately written in a simpler style - try Primo Levi, Giorgio Bassani or Natalia Ginzburg - and, as for more recent stuff - I enjoyed YA love story La solitudine dei numeri primi, Venuto al mondo by Margaret Mazzantini (which managed to be both about that special relationship between a mom and her son and the tragedy of the siege of Sarajevo - witchcraft, surely?), zombie apocalypse dystopia Anna by Nicolò Ammaniti, Valerio Massimo Manfredi’s Alexander, and, of course, Elena Ferrante’s books (which, well, are a good example of that perfect linguistic mastery I mentioned earlier, so they may be easier to read in translation - but they are a must-read).
Music
As I said, music is a big part of Italian culture - there are dozens of songs everybody knows by heart, and young people playing guitar and shouting the lyrics to the high heavens in the most improbable places (river banks, packed trains, the steps of some church) is still a common sight (thank God). From Fabrizio de André’s sheer poetry, to Francesco de Gregory’s often nonsensical beauty, all the way to the powerful love ballads of Claudio Baglioni and Lucio Battisti, there really is something for everyone. Some websites will offer a translation of the lyrics, but if your level is intermediate or higher, you shouldn’t find it too hard to understand them on your own - and I’m sure you’ll be more than tempted to sing along, because, really - forget Fellini and pizza and Roman ruins - music is really what holds the country together, and Italian, with its rich vowels and soft prosody, is really really really suited to be a singing language.
Buon divertimento and remember - language learning is magic and insane and also a process: go at your own pace and enjoy yourself.

Bonjour à tous! My roommate, Mackenzie, and I spent days 4-6 (our first weekend of independent travel) in Paris, France! Honestly, I’m still in shock that I was able to experience this incredible city’s love of the arts first-hand. Before I get started on what our Parisian adventures looked like, I should let you know that I love admiring architecture, so I was pleasantly overwhelmed while exploring this city and out of the 300-some pictures on my camera right now it’s nicely split into random buildings and artwork I saw in the museums! Now let’s get started! We arrived in Paris around the late afternoon on Friday, and after getting settled into our AirBnB we were able to meet up with some friends who were on the Paris/Amsterdam/Berlin junior journey! We met up with them in a cute little area not too far from the Notre Dame cathedral and grabbed some pizza before heading out to a cafe by their hotel. On the way to the cafe, they took us to see the Arc de Triomphe (second picture listed - you can also peep some of the cars that are miraculously driving in the most intense roundabout I’ve ever seen)! Saturday morning, we had an early start to roam about the Louvre - aka the world’s largest museum!!!! Since we only had a day to see our top picks in Paris, we weren’t able to explore the museum as much as we would have hoped, but we made sure to see our favorite exhibits - my favorites were the Roman sculptures! It was a lovely day, we had the perfect breeze paired with sunshine, so we decided to walk from the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower. We were actually really glad we walked it because we loved being able to stop and look at all of the different kinds of detail on all the buildings, and we even got to see La Seine - so naturally we made a pit stop along the way to snap a quick pic. When we had finally made it to the Eiffel Tower, we stood there for a couple of seconds to just let the fact that we were seeing this incredible, historic monument in person sink in. The fact that we were close enough to even see the different sets of elevators moving within it, and also being able to see people walking up the stairs (kudos to them) was insane!! We took a little bit to sit on the lawn in front of it with some ice cream and protein bars to snack on while we enjoyed the view. When we finished up there we decided to hop on to a Big Red Bus tour - best decision we made all day 10/10 would recommend! The bus took us around the city to the rest of the places on our list, like the Notre Dame cathedral and Musée d’Orsay. Notre Dame was INCREDIBLE! I fell in love with its architecture - all of the the statues lining the front of it were fantastic and the stained glass inside was beautiful (one of the stained glass windows is pictured, that particular one had a twin facing it on the opposite side of the cathedral). Outside of Notre Dame we stumbled upon one of the many street artists and purchased some of his pieces! From there we headed over to Musée d’Orsay just to be blown away once more! First off, I would just like to say - much appreciation to them for giving us a student discount, that always makes my even better. As soon as we walked in, we made a beeline for the Monet exhibit! The work in there, as well as the other exhibits were fantastic! There were a variety of pieces featuring an abundance of artists, including Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Georgia O’Keefe. One of my favorite pieces from the Monet exhibit is pictured above and is titled “Le Château de cristal en mer” and was done by Wenzel Hablik. Mackenzie and I had a blast weaving into and out of the many side rooms with all of these amazing pieces of artwork! We also loved the way the museum was set up, and later found out that it was once a train station! While exploring the museum we stumbled upon its cafe on the second floor, which was literally the most stunning room I have ever stepped foot in. The room was white with gold accents and trim, with paintings covering the corners and ceiling! From there, we hopped on the tour bus for a joyride and enjoyed the view of the city and reflected on everything we had seen that day. After going through it all and still being able to point out building and statues that we were seeing on the bus ride, we agreed that one of the most rewarding things from this experience was being able to explore this city and experience its culture and appreciate their art which are older than our entire country - it’s insane! That night we met up with our friends from the other trip, as well as some other students on our trip at the Eiffel Tower to enjoy some Nutella crepes and the view of the sparkling tower!

LOS ANGELES | Mac Miller, who collaborated with rap royalty, dies at 26
LOS ANGELES — Mac Miller, the platinum hip-hop star whose rhymes vacillated from party raps to lyrics about depression and drug use, and earned kudos from the likes of Jay-Z and Chance the Rapper, died Friday at age 26.
Police and paramedics found Miller unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles and declared him dead shortly before noon, coroner’s spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said. An autopsy will be required to determine the cause of death. His death was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.
“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans,” Miller’s family said in a statement.
Miller also drew headlines for his two-year relationship with singer Ariana Grande that ended earlier this year.
Police lines were pulled up and a coroner’s van left the cul-de-sac where Miller lived late Friday afternoon. About 10 news vans remained. Another rapper, Pittsburgh Slim, appeared and left flowers.
While Miller didn’t have a hit on Top 40 radio, he had a strong following on streaming networks and even had an album debut at No. 1 on the top 200 albums chart. He often alluded to his battles with addiction over the years and had collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla $ign.
At the news of his death, Chance the Rapper tweeted: “I don’t know what to say Mac Miller took me on my second tour ever. But beyond helping me launch my career he was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew. Great man. I loved him for real. I’m completely broken. God bless him.”
J Cole said on Twitter: “This is a message for anybody in this game that’s going through something. If you don’t feel right, if you feel you have a substance problem, if you need a ear to vent to. If you uncomfortable talking to people around you. Please reach out to me.”
He released his fifth, full-length album “Swimming” last month, with Variety calling it “a simple, stately, poetic autobiography.” Rolling Stone called it “silky, deep vibe redolent of the L.A. alternative soul scene.” New Musical Express said it was “his best work in years.”
The album included the song “Come Back to Earth,” with Miller trying to chart his way through tough times: “In my own way, I feel like living some alternate reality/And I was drowning, but now I’m swimming through stressful waters to relief.”
He was due to start a tour at the end of next month that he promised would be special every night. On Thursday he tweeted: “I just wanna go on tour.”
Miller and Grande collaborated on her first top 10 hit, the multiplatinum, “The Way,” which propelled her from teen TV stardom to pop star, and they dated for two years before their relationship ended in May. She later called it a “toxic” relationship on Twitter.
Not long after he was charged with DUI and hit and run after police said he struck a power pole and fled the scene. His blood alcohol was reportedly twice the legal limit.
“I made a stupid mistake. I’m a human being,” Miller told Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music in July. “But it was the best thing that could have happened. Best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally have the whole thing stop.”
The Pittsburgh native, born Malcolm McCormick, rose to fame with a frat-rap attitude in his mixtapes like “Best Day Ever” and his full-length album debut, 2011’s “Blue Slide Park.” His more goofy songs included “Nikes on My Feet,” ”Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza” and “Knock Knock.”
One of his biggest songs was the 2011 platinum-certified mixtape track “Donald Trump,” which prompted a feud with the future president. He asked his fans not to vote for Trump, who was flirting with the idea of running for president then, and publicly supported the Black Lives Matter movement.
In 2013, his sophomore effort, “Watching Movies with the Sound Off,” entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3. Miller sold more than 100,000 copies of the woozy, moody album, which features appearances or production work from Diplo, Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt, Jay Electronica and Action Bronson. He also landed a reality series, “Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family,” in 2013, which ran for two seasons on MTV2.
Miller told The Associated Press that year that the album’s depth and quality reflected two years of warp-speed development, his move from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles and just how serious he was about the craft. “There was always a lot more to me than what people wanted to say, that’s the only thing that ever bothered me,” Miller said.
His 2016 release “The Divine Feminine” had contributions from Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Cee-Lo Green and Grande.
Pitchfork magazine called it “the most surprising, concise, and accomplished album of his career.”
Miller’s label, Warner Bros., released a statement calling him “a hugely gifted and inspiring artist, with a pioneering spirit and a sense of humor that touched everyone he met. Mac’s death is a devastating loss and cuts short a life and a talent of huge potential, where the possibilities felt limitless.”
