I love the idea of several hundred controllers having to spend hours chasing Alloran through the woods to get him back every single time Esplin 9466 feeds. Because that mental image definitely fits with the overall Yeerk Empire level of efficiency.
What do y’all think happens to Alloran while Visser Three is in the Yeerk pool. Are the Yeerks going through the later half of book six every three days or something?

Montana violence against wolves: In 2021, Wisconsin hunters killed at least 216 wolves (of the state’s total 1,050-ish) in less than 60 hours immediately after wolves lost legal protections. Then, Idaho’s governor signed a bill allowing the killing of up to 90% of the state’s wolves, and legalized the killing of newborn pups, with the Idaho Cattle Association supporting the bill “because it allows the free-market system to play a role in killing wolves” (direct quote). Michigan and Minnesota are considering wolf hunts. Montana legalized neck-snare trapping statewide, and will allow for the killing of 40% of the state’s wolves. The newly-inaugurated governor of Montana, who signed the new wolf legislation, broke Montana laws/regulations earlier in 2021 when he trapped and killed a wolf near Yellowstone without proper certification.

The battle over the future of wolves in Montana reached a milestone late last week [August 2021] when a state committee finalized wolf regulations for the 2021-2022 season. The new rules permit “aggressive” hunting measures not seen for decades. The state’s Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 3-2 to increase wolf harvest by allowing neck snaring and trap baiting statewide [...]. The vote follows direction from the 2021 Legislature requiring state agencies to decrease wolf numbers and legalizing new hunting measures to do so. [...] Before the wildlife commission’s vote Friday, only foot traps were legal in Montana. [...] Gov. Gianforte, who earlier this year violated state hunting rules and received a warning for trapping a wolf without taking a required education certification class, signed the bills into law that expanded wolf hunting.

Wolf hunting will look significantly different in Montana this year, with Fish and Wildlife Commission approving new quota and hunting methods [...]. In a split 3-2 decision, for the upcoming hunting season, a statewide quota of 450 wolves was approved, almost 40 percent of the estimated population according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) data presented Friday [August 2021]. [...] Hunters are able to possess 10 wolf licenses and trappers are allowed a bag limit of 10 wolves. [...] The commission approved the neck-snare trapping of wolves [...]. The commission also approved controversial bait hunting and night hunting [...].

Most of this makes sense, but the Hork-Bajir bit doesn’t quite add up since the actual Hork-Bajir are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for, although admittedly not the best at grasping more abstract concepts. I think it’s at least partly an act; Visser Three is an insecure manchild with really scary superpowers and a bad habit of taking out his frustrations on his underlings, so his guards play up the “dumb muscle” aspect (which is how he naturally expects Hork-Bajir to behave anyway) to avoid drawing his attention. It’s worth noting that the Hork-Bajir Controllers working for Visser One are perfectly capable of speaking in complete, gramatically correct sentences, and even the ones working for Visser Three will occasionally drop the act when he’s not around, like the one group we see playing poker because they were getting bored on guard duty.
A Theory About Yeerks...
…see, when I reread the books a coupla months back, I had this idea that maybe when a Yeerk is controlling a host body, the brain-linking they’ve got to do has an effect on them. This isn’t just a random idea: there’s some stuff in the series that supports this, whether intentional or not.
The Taxxon HUNGER may or may not count. It’s so all-consuming that it might just be a lack of control over the host. But the really stupid Yeerks, the ones who are Imperial-Stormtrooper-Marksmanshipo-Academy-Hey-What’s-This-Beeping-Box-dumb mooks? They’re usually Hork-Bajir, who are adorable but really not the geniuses of the universe.
And then there’s human-controllers. Canonically in Animorphs the human race are, by the standards of other species, unpredictable, contradictory and possibly insane. And human-controllers tend to be the ones rebelling against not just their boss (which is implied to be business as usual for Yeerks) but against their whole species. They’re the ones who break away or have new ideas. They’re also the ones that go completely bugfuck crazy. Interestingly, they also have a much higher chance of sympathising with their hosts compared to other controllers, which might be related to the (again canonical) human ability to reconcile conflicting viewpoints.
But the reason I really like this headcanon is Visser Three. Because as a Hork-Bajir controller, he seems to be smart, ambitious, and ruthless (maybe he was controlling a Seer at the time?) But later he takes an Andalite body- Andalites, of course, being known for their arrogance, hypocrisy, holier-than-thou attitudes, and general douchebaggery to species they think of as less advanced (ie: everyone but the Ellimist, whom they are shit-scared of).
And as an Andalite-controller, we observe Visser Three to be meglomaniacal, paranoid, not half as smart as he thinks he is and really, really inclined to underestimate literally everyone else in the universe. He even has a weird obsession with Andalites that borders on the kissmessitudinal (yeah I be usin Homestuck terminology up in this bitch).
Basically, I think that controlling an Andalite has driven Visser Three completely off the rails, and he’ll never give up the body because ANDALITES ARE THE BEST SPECIES AND THAT IS WHY WE MUST DEFEAT THEM.

KTVH?
KTVH = “keep the visser happy,” in other words: do anything it takes to avoid upsetting one’s stab-happy manager, up to and including lying, cheating, stealing, or carrying out counterproductive plans.  It’s human-controller slang I invented for the purpose of my fic Ghost in the Shell.
More generally it refers to the controllers’ hilarious canonical tendency to withhold information, avoid criticism, let major design flaws slide, and generally obfuscate rather than tell senior leadership things that senior leadership doesn’t want to know.  I am 95% sure that K.A. Applegate is making a tongue-in-cheek comment on the fact that, when it comes to efficiency in leadership, it is definitely better to be loved than to be feared.  It’s perfectly understandable that no self-respecting yeerk would ever want to give a visser bad news, since Vissers Three, One, Four, Seventeen*, and Fifty-One are all shown executing subordinates any time they feel like it, but it also results in some ridiculously inefficient boondoggles that almost certainly contribute to the downfall of the Empire, since no one ever tells anyone anything in the yeerk army.  Case in point:
“A tiger, here? With no one knowing it’s escaped? It must be one of the Andalite bandits in a morph.”We knew the police force had been partly infiltrated by the Yeerks. Still, it was a shock hearing them talk about Andalites.“You may be right, but there’s nothing we can do about it. None of the other cops here are our people.”“Visser Three won’t take that attitude,” the first cop said, shivering despite the fact that it was not cold. “He’ll think we should have found a way to kill it.”“Then maybe Visser Three doesn’t need to hear about this.”"Yeah. No need to bother him with every minor thing that goes on. Yeah. We keep our mouths shut."
—The Solution
"I wanted to tell him. I wanted to say, Look, it can’t be done. You don’t understand! There’s no such thing as a human being without a free will. It’s … it’s … idiotic! But he’s no scientist, much less a philosopher. You can’t separate a sentient creature from free will. They are free willed. Yeerk, Hork-Bajir, human, it doesn’t matter. A sentient species has free will like an object has mass. You can’t separate them! But Visser Three doesn’t listen.” Marco said drily.
—The Experiment
Visser Three smiled an Andalite smile. “Yes. Well, about those Andalite bandits,” I said, “since we’re past all this unpleasantness between us, I guess I could tell you…”“Oh, nothing. Nothing at all, Visser. Not a thing.”
—Visser
“We have witnesses talking about monsters made of dust, not tornadoes.”“It’s the same at the newspaper,” the man said. “So far, this story is under control. People believe the tornado nonsense. But you have to tell Visser Three to—”Chapman had stopped, jerked around, and grabbed the man’s arm. Chapman had his face an inch from the man’s face.“Tell Visser Three? Tell Visser Three? No one tells Visser Three. People who tell the Visser something he doesn’t want to hear end up cut off from Kandrona rays, slowly starving, dying inside their hosts… Now, if you want to go tell the Visser not to use his Veleek, you go right ahead.”
—The Andalite’s Gift
It made Visser Three very dangerous. Odret 177 was worried. And Odret was confused. He did not understand why Visser One opposed using greater force against the humans. That was not his concern, he told himself. His concern was to stay alive. To do so he — I — had to obey Visser Three while pretending to obey the Council of Thirteen and avoid so angering Visser Three that his life would end in hideous torture.
—Back to Before
The woman’s jaw twitched again, but she stayed in control. “What do you think a bullet would do to that crystal?”“But the odds that a bullet would hit the crystal … It’s not going to happen.”The woman smiled grimly. “That crystal is worth more than the mothership and everything in it,” she said. Then she started yelling. “You want to shoot? Go ahead, fool! If you hit the crystal, you can explain it to Visser Three.”She got a grip on herself while the guy who had spoken out decided he was not interested in explaining anything to Visser Three.
—The Android
“I only read two complex life-forms,” the guard said. “I’m showing several insect readings, but only two complex life-forms: yours, sir, and the driver’s. The prisoner is not registering as a Iife-form”…Tom said, "You can count to three, right?”“Yes, sir.”“Do you know what that prisoner is? That’s an Animorph. You think maybe Visser One would like to see her just as soon as possible?”“Yes, sir!”
—The Answer
“I don’t understand,” one of them said breathlessly. “It is impossible for it not to be working. Impossible.” He ran toward me. Stood on tiptoes to peer at me in my cube. I was still a hawk. I had not demorphed. For the very excellent reason that I was not morphed to begin with. “It must work!”“Visser… it must work. It does work!”“It works, Visser, it… somehow …”Taylor rolled her eyes and sighed.Visser Three stood completely immobile. A stillness filled the room.
—The Illusion
So on and so forth.  We get the feeling that there’s a reason that Visser Three has thousands of human minds to use at his disposal but still doesn’t know that grape juice does nothing for skunk smell, that it’s pronounced “eeney meeney miney moe,” or that deer are native to most American forests. Although in theory the Yeerk Empire is giving all its soldiers a huge incentive not to screw up by not tolerating failure, in practice the whole power structure is built on principles of CYA and sycophancy.
