(Gifted) BOOK REVIEW: Flight for Freedom by Kristen Fulton, illustrated by Torben Kuhlmann 🎈 . Flight for Freedom tells the true story of the family Wetzel, who built their own hot air balloon to cross the Berlin Wall from East Germany to West. . One of my favourite kinds of non-fiction children’s books is when it tells a story I have never heard of before, and this is one of them! The writer, Kristen Fulton, writes in the back of the book that when the Berlin Wall came down, “the world seemed to forget about heroes like Günter Wetzel”, and I think she is right. The story is accompanied with gorgeously detailed illustrations by Torben Kuhlmann. The style is a little old-timey, and fits the time period of the book perfectly! ✨ . I really enjoyed this story, even if it was a little simplistic. I would have liked there to be more information about what the Berlin Wall was, and the differences between east and west. I think I enjoyed the factual information given after the story at the end of the book the most. It tells you a more detailed story about how the family collected the materials for the balloon, and the escape attempts they had made before. It also gives some more background on the Berlin Wall and the Cold War, but I do feel like these pages are more meant for the parents than the children, and it would have been nice for that information to be more incorporated into the story itself! . Thank you @abramschronicle for sending me a review copy! . . . #JohannasReviews #FlightforFreedom #kristenfulton #torbenkuhlmann #abramsandchronicle #picturebook #picturebooks #childrensnonfiction #bookstagram #momstagram #kidlit #childrensbooks #childrensillustration #bookcover #bookreview #picturebookreview #hotairballoon #berlinwall https://www.instagram.com/p/B9XPSLtAvlg/?igshid=uoekd8s2qn79
