Non-English speaking Destiny fans, this is a general call for input: this season (Season of the Seraph), how is “warmind” being translated? I recall the translations for the Warmind DLC not being what I expected, and illuminating; for instance French rendered Rasputin’s title as “Esprit Tutélaire” or tutelary deity and German rendered him as “Kriegsgeist” or “War-[Spirit/Mind/Ghost].”

Of course Alec hadn’t agreed without demanding a reward.

“Everybody can be bought, the trick lies in finding their price tag,” he’d said often enough. So far, he had kept his price tag hidden and only had told Demian he would call in his favour when the time would be right. That time hadn’t come yet, and Demian was still afraid of what Alec’s favour might look like.

What was the price of a man who would possess a whole empire one day?

The deal had been set and Alec had met Samantha the next day, at ten fifteen, at her usual spot on the green couch that had stood on the eastern side of the library.

“Hey, so you’re Samantha right?” Alec had said after Samantha hadn’t acknowledged him with anything but a short motion of her eyes, up from the book she’d been holding in her hands and down onto the pages again.

“Who wants to know that?” She had replied, turning the page.

“Alec Blanchard,” Alec had stretched out his hand to greet her. She’d kept hers on the back of her book.

“Alright, listen. I know you just want to sit here and spend your day reading, and then I come and get on your nerves. I’ll be gone in a few minutes if you just answer some questions.” At that Samantha had closed the book and set it onto her lap. Alec hadn’t known how exactly he’d managed to catch her attention but somehow he had.

“If you’ve just come here because of those stupid rumours, you can get up and leave again. I’m not all-knowing, sorry to disappoint.” Samantha had finally looked at Alec, her deep brown eyes had shone almost golden in the sunbeams that’d streamed through the big library windows that day, as if a spark had been lit up inside them.

“I know,” Alec had simply said and left Samantha startled.

“No one knows everything, those rumours are absurd. Who made them up, the juniors?” Alec had thought he could actually see the corners of Samantha’s mouth twitch into something similar to a smile for a moment. Then she had looked back down onto her book and begun reading it again. However, she must have come to the conclusion that ignoring Alec wouldn’t have made much sense anymore. “What do you want to know?”

Alec had asked her what she knew about metallic balls lying in cornfields, and he’d been surprised by how much it had been.

“I’ve read something about them in an online article once.” Samantha had looked around if anyone had been nearby, able to listen. However since most people had been in class and the others at home, they’d been the only ones inside the library. One couldn’t even say staff had been present, because Ms. Breker had fallen asleep at her table. “It said that a research team who had observed penguins in the Antarctic had discovered a penguin couple who, instead of hatching an egg, had a metallic ball lying inside their nest. They had wanted to observe them further, however the hatchery had vanished one day.”

“What do you mean by vanished?”

“The ice the penguin colony had been on must have broken off and drifted away into the ocean.”

“Oh, that’s sad.” People might have said Alec was heartless. He was not.

People were just shitty.

“No, that’s climate change.” Samantha had said in a harsh tone.

At first Alec had felt offended by the indicating tone in Samantha’s voice, then he’d realized he should feel addressed.

“And,” she’d begun anew only to falter again, “maybe more.”

The beam of confusion on Alec’s face must have been rather visible.

“Alright, that’s where it all gets a bit weird. So I’ve also read the comments under the article,” Who reads comments? Alec had thought but hadn’t wanted to interrupt Samantha. “And some people wondered what a metallic ball would be doing in the Antarctic. While some blamed pollution, there had been one comment that claimed this ball to be something called a Kriegsgeist.”

A German word that could be translated into War Spirit. The Blanchards had a tradition of being taught many languages and Alec had been no exception.

“The author didn’t explain their comment further, but after doing some research I’ve found some blogs and articles that stated those Kriegsgeister were remnants from the Machine War forty three years ago and had been used as weapons.” Samantha had still not looked up from her book, however Alec had doubted she’d actually been reading. “Conspiracy theories if you ask me.”

It had been as if she’d said his thoughts out loud. This story had been way too crazy to be true. Little had they known then it actually was.

Alec had already got up to leave when Samantha had spoken again. “Why did you ask?”

He hadn’t known either. Demian had asked him to find out more about metallic spheres and Alec hadn’t asked for the reason. He had known that morning that it was stupid to believe those online texts about lost weapons told the truth, however he’d gotten curious too.

“You know what,” he had said, stretching his hand out again, “let’s find out.” This time Samantha had taken it.
