a couple more artists who were submitted that i don't think qualify or i'm not sure about but would appreciate some feedback from people who might know more about them or have Opinions:
Alexandra Exter - russian? born in białystok, studied in kyiv, painted in russia and france
Fernand Léger - i guess his wife was polish (belariussian?) but apart from this i can't think of any reason he should be in
Elisa Bloch - born in wrocław when it was german, emigrated to france as a kid
Olga Chernysheva - come on, she is just straight up russian????
Ryan Gander - british but the submitted sculpture is exhibited in poland
Theodor Erdmann Kalide - german, lived in the prussian partition, the sculpture submitted is in bytom
Theodore Roszak - born in poznań, emigrated to the US as a kid
Anastasia Rydlevskaya - belarussian, lives and works in gdańsk
Fanny Rabel - born in lublin, emigrated to paris then mexico as a child
additionally:
Paweł Merwart - kinda sorta probably more french than polish but we had him in the previous tournament and also his biography and his work slap so i want him in the tournament
#what have i gotten myself into trying to decide nationalities of 19th century people from kresy or śląsk#ziemia jest globalną wioską etc etc nationalities don't matter#maybe i should make a bracket for these artists only or sth#anyway the general rule was ''if they were educated in poland or under polish artists then its enough''#so if you know sth about the education of these guys im not sure about this should be enough to sway me#imo everyone except leger and chernysheva can go in?

Need to learn French for many reasons but chief among them I am pretty sure Korzenie is in part a response to Les Déracinés and Stefania's prose does this translucent polyglossia thing where she "speaks" one language in the guise of another (Jelonka becomes Bichette, etc.)
#She said French novels taught her about literature in her youth and she would have#Read the crazy reactionary ones as well as the humanist classics lol#If you go study philosophy in Kraków you forget what it's like to be from the Kresy!!!!! Egads!!!!!!!

Pulptober 13th - Pulp Survivor - Hellboy
Just ain't Pulptober without Red. Happy to report that the new film replicates the feel of a good Hellboy short story on a rainy afternoon almost perfectly. Don't heed the bad reviews, if you like the comics you'll get a kick out of The Crooked Man and it's a perfect watch for the spooky season. For my money Jack Kresy plays Hellboy the closest to the comic personality that I've seen in live-action: there's very little of the impudent child that Ron Perlman channels half the time, and none of the moody teenager of David Harbour.
Art from Richard Corben, Duncan Fegredo and Mike Mignola

Today I'm translating a folk song in Ladino that has got me. You can listen to it here, sung beautifully by Françoise Atlan. It's called "This Mountain Before Me."
This mountain before me Catches alight and burns. It's there I lost my love. I sit and fall to weeping. The little jasmine tree I planted in my garden, I grew it, raised it up. Now only others enjoy it. I want to find out secrets, Those secrets of my life. The sky I want for paper, The sea I want for ink, Trees for quill pens, To write my misfortunes. No-one knows my pain, Not strangers nor family.
Original lyrics and translation notes under the cut.
Esta muntanya d’enfrente S’asiende i va kemando. Ayi perdi al mi amor, M’asento i vo yorando.
It's a pretty straightforward one, honestly, and it helps that I found a Spanish translation online. And though I can't guarantee that expressions are used the same way in Spanish and Ladino, I've used Spanish as a guide where necessary. Mostly I wanted to share it here because the imagery fucking rules. One thing I really love is how opaque some of the metaphor is here. Are the mountain and the tree literal objects that exist? If so, what's the connection between them?
fall to weeping --- vo yorando/voy llorando as opposed to simply yoro; I think ir is being used here in the sense of beginning or becoming something. The same construction is used in the second line; I might have translated that as "catches alight and begins to burn" but I'm trying for a sort of scansion.
jasmine tree --- Atlan does not say "yasimin," but I have no idea what she's actually saying, and the lyrics I've found online said this.
raised it up --- my dictionary gives engrandecer as "to amplify, enlarge, magnify; exalt, extol; enhance." Kind of reminds me of the language in the second section of Kaddish! Interestingly the Spanish translator chose to render this as "floreció," ("it flourished") even when a cognate was available. Anyway I think this isn't just meant in the sense of literally growing it taller, but also making it beautiful and worthy of love.
only others --- it just says "others are enjoying it," so technically this could be the speaker saying that after she's raised the tree she can share it with everyone, but the bitter tone of the song suggests otherwise.
misfortunes --- definitely some ambiguity since the word being used here is males. It could mean the singer's misdeeds, ailments, or misfortunes. I love the idea of her feeling terrible guilt for something she's done and wanting to write it down, but I think the text definitely implies it's misfortunes.
#poetry#translation#ladino#I want to translate poetry in every language. it's so different for all of them!!#yay yay yayyayay I love translating

His words are stoking anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland and fueling Polonophobia in Ukraine.
Current leader of the “Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists” (OUN) Bogdan Chervak, whose predecessors were responsible for the Volhynia Genocide, ominously warned that “Poles are playing with fire” after being triggered by a shitpost map that was shared by an anonymous account. He then nastily added, “And after that they are indignant that Ukraine reluctantly gives permits for the exhumation of Polish graves”, which is a reference to the aforementioned World War II-era crime.
The map that prompted this scandalous reaction from the OUN chief depicted Russia’s Kaliningrad Region as part of today’s Poland as well as the interwar Second Polish Republic’s “Eastern Borderlands” (“Kresy”) that are currently located in parts of Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. It was the inclusion of the last-mentioned country’s territory which triggered Chervak into lashing out against Poles in general and issuing his ominous warning to all of them that then went viral on the Polish segment of X.
That was an overreaction since Poland doesn’t have claims to any of those territories and even the most fringe ultra-nationalist political parties don’t want them back. While it’s true that some patriotic Poles experience “phantom pain” since those lost lands were integral to their civilization-state during the height of its power, the costs of reclaiming them are unacceptable. Nobody wants to wage war against NATO ally Lithuania, nuclear-armed Russia (which protects Belarus), and/or battle-hardened Ukraine.
