Things cheaper at Dollartree (after much research)

This is a big list I made for myself and anyone else who wants to know what is legit cheaper at the dollar tree and not just 1 dollar for the sake of there, some things might surprise you what is cheaper and even better at a dollar tree. I try to also pick the healthiest options and compare them to prices in places such as Walmart or a large stock place like BJs. I have also used fooducate.com to see which ones are more healthy, of course with things such as chips and snacks though don’t consider them to be healthy but in those cases I opt for the off-brand ones that taste better than the brand ones. Note: This is USA based.

Especially considering it’s a well known brand as well, I wonder who is their dealer or are they just selling it cheap out of donation?)

Healthy Chef Canola Non-Stick Cooking Spray (this one’s pretty wild too, it only is sold at dollartree and is considered the healthiest cooking spray in the entirety of America according to fooducate)

Gonna go on a safe bet here and say that everything can be found for less and in greater quantity anywhere else. Hairbo Twin Snake is the same price at Walmart though. Most candies are sold 40% cheaper at bulk supermarkets though.

You can probably find all of these at an Ebay auction, but it’s more accessible here.

Kitchen appliances, a glass salt shaker is like 5 dollars at Walmart but it’s 1 dollar at dollartree. All of the Betty Crocker kitchen appliances like spatulas are only a dollar too and so good. (They are 3 DOLLARS cheaper at dollar tree). IT IS INSANE HOW CHEAP this shit is here, like the can opener they sell for 1 dollar is 6 or 5 dollars everywhere else.

All Arm & Hammer stuff including the Arm & Hammer Ultra Max 3-in-1 Fresh Scented Body Wash, Shampoo, and Conditioner, 12 oz are good choices. Deodorant too is good. All Arm and hammer stuff here is cheaper than on Walmart and a great brand.

Hand soap might be found for 97 cents at Walmart but it’s a small difference.

Packaging Design

For this project I focused on sustainability, accessibility and multi-functional design. My idea was to make a solution for my own example of bad design, specifically for pens. This approach to packaging is very wasteful, inaccessible and possibly dangerous.

To get started I spent some time researching other designer’s sustainable solutions. I knew right away for this project I would love to make home-made paper, I’ve wanted to make this forever and now this project was perfect for it. I decided that was the best option for material, it’s repurposing paper material that has been used once already. Starting the design with a repurposed material completes the palimpsest thinking behind the multifunctional use of material.

Palimpsest

This packaging will serve another purpose after it’s first use, becoming 2 “to do” list sheets. Then the customer can repurpose this as a helpful product for their newly purchased pen to write on! This leaves almost no waste after opening the product, and the paper could be further recycled.

My Ideas

Right away when I thought about accessibility I thought of a round, cylinder shape that could easily tear away to open. This would be a simple, one motion action to get the product from inside.

Next, I needed to come up with a second use for the packaging material... could it be related to the product it’s selling? What is something handy I always use? To do lists! I write out to do lists everyday, about anything I need to do whether its school, cleaning the apartment, working on projects, etc.

These were my first ideas of how to approach the rolled package, possibly using a few sheets and not knowing how to close it together!

My Process

First I began the process of making my own paper, I chose to get this started right away to allow time for trial and error it takes to get it right. I purchased some affordable materials from Dollarama and tried to find as many things around my house I could utilize. I collected scrap paper both colourful and old schoolwork.

Making the paper was fun and very interesting trying to figure out the best weight. I enjoyed experimenting with colour and adding in textures like dried flowers just for fun.

While in the paper-making process I began figuring out the dimensions and functionality of my packaging with construction paper. I figured this was the closest texture of paper to the home-made sheets. The design became more complicated once I realized I need to somehow close the ends of a cylinder, and in a way that still allows my packaging to function the way I planned.

I first tried some foldable circles attached to the entire piece of paper, but these looked very unfinished and had no good way of attaching to the package. I also tried making small cuts along the edge so when it was rolled they folded inwards. I came up with a better solution, a cap, that attached on the inside layer once package was rolled up. This looked the cleanest and hold in the pen inside.

Once my sheets were made, I needed to print on them. The printer was able to grab them much easier if the raw edges were cut, there is the pile of left-overs after cropping a few sheets. These scraps could be re-purposed into more paper pulp.

Here is the design printed on my paper, it was so exciting to see on the texture of the paper and it achieved an aesthetic I really enjoy. However, my hopes and dreams for my paper were a bit disappointed as I quickly found out it didn’t like to bend and form into the shape of the package. The perforations I made tore while I was struggling to assemble the small design. I learnt from this and tried to perforate with larger spaces on the next trials.

I also noticed from the process of putting it together, from all the cutting, perforating, folding and rolling it wore off the ink so on the finished design it’s not very legible and the graphic of the pen was ruined. If this product was mass produced this could be resolved with better quality ink, or a coating.

Here is the final design I used for printing, I kept a few guidelines but adjusted their opacity very low so they weren’t noticeable on the packaging.

Here is one half of the to-do lists printed on the inside of the package, for customers to use with their newly purchased pen! This serves a second purpose and leaves less waste, and could even be further recycled.

After making 2 trials of the packaging assembly with the homemade paper, I wanted to see if I could get a cleaner and more functional result with store bought paper. This is recycled KRAFT brown paper made from paper bags, so it is still a sustainable material compared to new paper. It was easier to assemble, and the result stayed together much better.

Again, the ink was worn off quite a bit from putting it together but I do like how it turned out! There is definitely the human touch visible in my packaging prototypes, I really enjoy that aesthetic but to be sold in stores it would be interesting to see the result if it were made in a factory.

I cut the perforation lines by hand using my exacto-knife. They ripped well, and I enjoy the rough around the edges look.

Reflection

Overall I’m excited about my results and my design idea. To be honest while working on this assignment, I became so aware of how our mass produced packaging is designed to be wasteful or could have much better functionality. I already felt so angry with our habits of wrapping basically every product we sell in layers and layers of plastics, for shipping and for display. I worked at a retail store and experienced unwrapping all these layers of thick plastic just for shipping purposes, and the companies complete disregard for what happens to that material after.

If we approached packaging in this more sustainable and multifunctional way we could make such a large difference. While researching, I found an interesting fact that I incorporated in the package, to keep customers conscious of their impact. 40% of plastics produced are used for packaging and are made to be discarded. There is so much wasted opportunity here.

Another cool thing I learnt, during a progress critique we talked about refillable pens! Which I did not know existed, so knowing that now this package would make the most sense to be selling a refillable pen, to minimize as much waste a possible. I may purchase one soon, but I’m not sure if I trust myself not to lose it.

I had so much fun making this, I’ve always loved building, assembling and figuring out dimensions to make projects or mini houses! It reminds me of the pond boats I used to make with popsicle sticks, cardboard, duct tape, etc. (sorry mom for the drill holes in the kitchen table)

Our Latest Wellbeing Initiative: Sustainable, Eco-Friendly & Vegan Care Packages on a Pandemic Budget

Three months down the line into lockdown, I’ve been feeling the burn of not seeing most of my colleagues in so long. At Acre, we’re pretty social – we’re big on drinks in the pub or in the bar at the office, playing rounders in the park, coming together for cake at birthdays and summer parties. Not being able to do that sucks for all of us, especially when the cultural aspect of your job is one of your favourite things about it!

I got to thinking about how we could bring people together in a budget-friendly and COVID-appropriate way, beyond a pub quiz on a skype call, so I started looking into helpful promotional items we could send to the team; this then developed into care packages.

A few conversations down the line and with support, strict budget and sign off from our CEO & Founder I was on my way, with a fairly obvious caveat; this has to be environmentally friendly.

As a group of sustainability recruiters, our team are all pretty on-brand in that respect, and I don’t think anyone would’ve appreciated a pile of plastic turning up on the doorstep. I sourced nine products in the end, all of which had great sustainability credentials, be that plastic-free, zero waste, ethically sourced, vegan – or all of the above.

Here are the products we settled on:

1. Baukjen Face Masks | Click here

Following the announcement that they would be mandatory on public transport in the UK, we chose BAUKJEN face masks as a practical and helpful gift, and because of their excellent sustainability credentials.

They’re organic, reusable, ethically sourced – and as I found out when they arrived, totally beautiful and soft! It’s always good to know where your products come from, and these makes are made in a family-run factory in Portugal.

2. Zero-Waste, Plastic-Free Hand Sanitiser | Click here

Wearth always has an amazing selection of eco-friendly products - but this was actually the only hand sanitizer I could find anywhere online that was totally zero-waste. With packaging made from recycled glass and aluminium, this one was a winner all around – and totally practical for those trips back into the office (whenever they may be!)

3. Sleep Scented Isle of Skye Candles | Click here

It’s been widely reported in the news that sleep has taken a hit for most of us throughout lockdown. We looked into sending pillow spray and struggled to find something which was a} not packaged in plastic b} suitable for posting {glass isn’t always great} and c} budget-friendly, so we decided on a candle instead.

I’m so glad we did, as these candles smell glorious. They’re crafted from completely renewable soy wax, and the environment is as important to the Isle of Skye candle company as it is to us. We went for the ‘travel tins’ which were again really postal-friendly and plastic-free.

4. The Happy Newspaper | Click here

The Happy Newspaper is personally my favourite item in the box. Written and produced by a small business owner in the UK, Emily Coxhead, this big ‘ol dose of positivity is what we all need right now. It’s packed full of little environmental wins and examples of the good still going on in the world.

As another way of bringing us all together, we’ve kicked off a global sunflower growing competition. These little ‘Be Happy’ sunflower boxes from Gift Republic are great – no plastic, no waste, and giving us all some green shoots to nurture from home! We also tried to order the basil kits for some lockdown cooking but to no avail - we settled on the equally appropriate ‘Many Thanks' boxes.

6. Conscious Chocolate | Click here

Appealing to Andy, our founder, and his constant need to be fed – snacks were a must. I settled on conscious chocolate, and the clue is in the name. This vegan, gluten-free raw 75% dark chocolate is absolutely glorious and available in a ton of flavours. It’s produced in the UK, with ethically sourced ingredients, and packaged in biodegradable packaging.

7. Candy Kitten Sweets | Click here

Further indulging Andy in his snacks, I went for a variety of flavours of Candy Kittens - another local, UK supplier of vegan and vegetarian goodness. Whilst this was the only bit of plastic which snuck into the box, the bags can be recycled at stations in most large supermarkets.

I ordered some of these directly from Candy Kittens, but as they’re in heavy demand {because they’re just SO good} I also ordered from mighty-small, a great online supermarket which only sells from local and independent brands.

8. Loch Ness Bakery Biscuits | Click here

I spotted these biscuits on ‘the vegan kind’, another online supermarket, and they looked too good to be true. They’re incredibly reasonable in price, from an entirely vegan range/bakery, and delicious. They’re also not too weighty – which is great from a postal-cost perspective. I ordered directly from the bakery as we needed a ton of packs, and they were super helpful.

I designed some gift cards which we ordered from hatch print on their seedling paper, which can be planted and grows into either ‘wild meadow flowers’ or a ‘wild herb garden’. These definitely aren’t the cheapest option out there, but they were so well received - I would definitely recommend making the investment!

I waited until our items had all arrived before deciding what size postal boxes to order, just to make sure everything fitted and we wouldn’t be left with a ton of spare space to fill. In the end, I ordered cardboard 75% recycled postal boxes online for this. These are totally recyclable and really easy to assemble and to store until you need to send them. What’s also a bonus is that in the size we ordered, 36 x 28 x 8cm, they still fit small parcel criteria with most carriers.

I felt truly awful about coating all of the lovely, sustainable goodies in more plastic and went on the hunt for a recyclable option.

I saw this incredibly cute brown paper parcel tape on Etsy, made by Nikki McWilliams, and couldn’t resist. It’s printed in the UK on kraft paper with eco-friendly water-soluble inks - I was more excited to see the tape arrive than all of the other presents!

DIY Packing Materials

You’ll need something to stop your products moving around inside the boxes and getting damaged in transit. I naively didn’t think about this until the day we were packing them up for postage.
