From now on you always have to write if the animal you have drawn is bigger or smaller in real life!
Oh and if anyone’s curious, I looked it up and the water fleas are crustacean too!

Idag var det svårt att bestämma sig för vad jag skulle skriva om. Det står mellan kräftdjur, stickade havsdjur, skaparglädje, kängurur och Chang Loo. Alltså blir det inget av dom och en pinterest-blandning istället :)

Taken 2022 22nd January, these are two species displayed for the price of one @evolutionsmuseet being displayed. The common hermit crab (Palaemon adspersus), or eremitkräfta, with its shell covered with snail fur (Hydractinia echinata). In Sweden, these hermits are common along the west coast, being found from tidepools to 140 metre depths. Contrary to the name, all hermits aren't actually crabs, it's simply the perfect body. As for the snail fur, they are colonial hydroids that settle on gastropod shells occupied by hermits on both sides of the north Atlantic, where in Europe it occurs on 'P. adspersus'. #animal #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #hermitcrab #eremitkräftor #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #decapoda #paguridae #pagurus #pagurusbernhardus #commonhermitcrab #eremitkräfta #cnidaria #anthoathecata #hydractiniidae #hydractinia #hydractiniaechinata #snailfur (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZPvyhEKAyr/?utm_medium=tumblr

Skaldjuren …

Taken 2022 22nd January, ever heard the story 'The Ugly Barnacle'? Well I hope you heard of 'Balanus balanus'. These barnacles reside in the Arctic Ocean and the northern seas near it. They start their lives as free-swimming larva among zooplankton before cementing themselves on a surface their cement glands can bind to. They then live out their lives breeding as hermaphrodites and filter-feed using their legs. #animal #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #barnacles #barnacle #acornbarnacle #acornbarnacles #havstulpaner #havstulpan #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #thecostraca #balanomorpha #balanidae #balanus #balanusbalanus (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZN5kALqV1y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Taken the same day as the previous post, this is a Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), or havskräfta, but is more likely to be recognized by the commercial name as scampi. Not much can be said beyond what I already have mentioned the first time I posted one, but this one is living and you can see what rest of the body looks like as opposed to the ventral like last time. This specimen is a female that was used for our identification exam, though I'm sure she would rather be on a dark burrow than exposed to the world. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #invertebrates #invertebrate #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #lobster #lobsters #humrar #hummer #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #nephropidae #nephrops #nephropsnorvegicus #norwaylobster #havskräfta #scampi (at Klubbans biologiska station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeYos1kKqWy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken the same day as the previous post, this is a common hermit crab (Liocarcinus Pagurus bernhardus), or rödvit eremitkräfta, beyond the preservation jar. Last time I posted a hermit, I mentioned it's not a true crab. They are an example of a phenomena known as carcinisation, first coined by zoologist L. A. Borradaile, which is the morphological evolution of Anomura into crab-like forms. It can seem difficult to tell these 'false crabs' from 'true crabs', but all that's needed is to look at the walking legs; Anomura use three pairs while Brachyura use four. That, and Anomura come in different forms when compared to Brachyura. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #invertebrate #invertebrates #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #hermitcrab #hermitcrabs #eremitkräfta #eremitkräftor #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #anomura #paguridae #pagurus #pagurusbernhardus #commonhermitcrab #rödviteremitkräfta (at Klubbans biologiska station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeCdtuXKac6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken the same day as the previous post, this is an immature harbour crab (Liocarcinus depurator), or räfflad simkrabba, and can get much bigger than this. In Sweden, they occur all over the west coast along the at 1-100m depths on sandy and gravelly substrate. Unlike other crabs, this one can swim with a pair of paddle-shaped legs allowing for greater ability. During April-September, females can have eggs tucked into their pleon. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #invertebrate #invertebrates #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #crab #crabs #krabba #krabbor #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #brachyura #carcinidae #liocarcinus #liocarcinusdepurator #harbourcrab #räffladsimkrabba (at Klubbans biologiska station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeCNUgiq_fB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken the same day as the previous post, this was a small common acorn barnacle (Semibalanus balanoides), or räfflad havstulpan, cluster I found on the beach. In Sweden, they occur on the west coast within the intertidal zones of rocky shores. They can survive in further zones, but competition and predation stop that from happening. They possess feathery cirri that are used for filter-feeding and oxygen extraction, but they felt too exposed to show them. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #invertebrate #invertebrates #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #acornbarnacle #acornbarnacles #havstulpaner #havstulpan #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #thecostraca #balanomorpha #balanidae #semibalanus #semibalanusbalanoides #commonacornbarnacle #räffladhavstulpan (at Fiskebäckskil, Västra Götalands Län, Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd1g6h1q406/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taken 2022 22nd January, this is a tretandskrabba (Geryon trispinosus) @evolutionsmuseet being displayed. Europe's most important commercial crustacean. In Sweden, they occur off the west coast with adults occurring at 100-700m depths, with juveniles occurring at 1000m depths, which migrate upwards as they grow. They occur wherever soft sediment is available to dig in. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #crab #crabs #krabba #krabbor #truecrab #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #geryonidae #geryon #geryontrispinosus #tretandskrabba (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ4wiO_Kdxt/?utm_medium=tumblr

Taken 2022 22nd January, this is a European crayfish (Nephrops norvegicus), or javskräfta, @evolutionsmuseet being displayed. I only say crayfish because it's internationally recognized, but if you were to talk to me, you would hear me say "crawdad". In Sweden, they were widespread in many freshwater habitats, especially in central and southwest Sweden. It was even considered a delicacy first among Swedish nobility, then to all classes due to it being abundant. Sadly, they are only found in almost 1000 scattered sites, more so in southern and central Norrland. The decline was caused first by crayfish plague, then by the introduction of the invasive signal crayfish from the US during the 1960s, which are a carrier of crayfish plague. It's not just Sweden, it's all of Europe where this species is in decline. Overall, the species is listed as Vulnerable, but in Sweden, it's Critically Endangered. While in decline, there is still time for this great crustacean to be saved. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #crayfish #crawdads #kräftor #kräfta #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #astacidae #astacus #astacusastacus #europeancrayfish #flodkräfta (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ4qhrMK09A/?utm_medium=tumblr

In Sweden, they occur off the west coast at 20-600m depths wherever there is muddy substrate. They confine themselves to their burrows until night, when they scavenge or hunt for fish, worms, and jellies and, during spring or winter, mate. Males will molt twice a year, while females do so only once a year after their eggs hatch. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #lobster #lobsters #humrar #hummer #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #nephropidae #nephrops #nephropsnorvegicus #norwaylobster #havskräfta (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ4XJAsq7B2/?utm_medium=tumblr

Taken 2022 22nd January, this is a European lobster (Homarus gammarus), or Europeisk hummer, and molt @evolutionsmuseet being displayed. The live ones are blue, but preservation has faded the coloration. Sweden, they occur off the west coast at 15-50m depths, but will retreat to where there is hard substrate and plenty of crevices to hide away in. Like every decapod, it must moult its exoskeleton to grow, just like what happened to the one on the right, but the rate of molting decreases to 1-2 years once it's large, though it should be noted that mature males grow faster than their female counterparts because the they molt only every two years to prevent from losing the roe tucked in their swimmerets. They require a very specific water temperature range to operate. Below 5°C, it stops eating and goes dormant, but above 22°C, they will die. However, 15°C is when mating takes place. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #arthropods #arthropod #kräftdjur #crustacean #crustaceans #lobster #lobsters #humrar #hummer #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #malacostraca #decapoda #nephropidae #homarus #homarusgammarus #europeanlobster #europeiskhummer (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ3Fm5HqMxa/?utm_medium=tumblr

Taken 2022 22nd January, these are spetssköldbladfotingar (Lepidurus apus) och hästskoräkar (Triops cancriformis). While they are called tadpole shrimp, they aren't shrimp, triopsids are a Family that has changed little since the Devonian. Both species occur in temporary pools, which before getting dry or frozen, their eggs will be layed. These eggs have a protective cyst that allows them to remain dormant in the substrate, for decades even, and resist the elements until conditions are favorable. In Sweden, T. cancriformis occurs in a few locals in Öland, with two records in Västra Götaland, while L. apus occurs in Skåne, Smålands part of Kalmar län, and Uppsala län. Sadly, both are threatened in Sweden, with T. cancriformis being Near Threatened, while L. apus is Critically Endangered, both because of habitat loss due to the loss of temporary pools to agriculture land. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #fauna #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #livingfossil #livingfossils #criticallyendangered #nearthreatened #tadpoleshrimp #tadpoleshrimps #crustaceans #crustacean #kräftdjur #animalia #arthropoda #crustacea #branchiopoda #notostraca #triopsidae #triops #triopscancriformis #lepidurus #lepidurusapus (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZhdvPRq-wz/?utm_medium=tumblr
