Lost in Translation: How I stumbled upon BLACKPINK and became a Lovestick Gril
BLACKPINK is my absolute favorite group, they are the group that I follow the most actively.
But how did I find them? Actually, quite early on, I would say. I think it was either between their debut album and Kill This Love or after Kill This Love.
I discovered them back then because I was a fan of the TV series Lucifer and enjoyed watching edits related to it. And in one of those edits featuring the character Mazekeen, their debut song BOOMBAYAH was used in the background.
I liked that song, and thus, I had found a group that would accompany me in the years to come, even though I didn't know it at the time.
Since then, I have eagerly awaited each new release and enjoyed their music very much. For a long, long time, they were the only K-pop group I listened to, as I primarily listened to Western music, especially German music.
I did try with other groups, and although I found some good songs among them, none of them truly captivated me.
From that point on, I was always actively involved, from Loveisick Girls to How You Like That, to Pink Venom and Shut Down, I stayed up to date and looked forward to each release.
Now that we're talking about all these song titles, let's address some silly mistakes I made due to my barely existing ability to understand and translate the English language properly, without even questioning it.
Let's start with "Whistle," which, for some reason, I pronounced as "Whitelist" back then, and now, for a very long time, I've been asking myself why? Especially when you think about it, it doesn't make any sense and doesn't match the song. And next, we have "Lovesick Girls," which I called "Lovestick Grils," and honestly, for a long time, I wondered what that title actually meant until I realized that I was the silly one in this whole situation. Where did such things come from? As I said, my nonexistent English skills and maybe because I don't have K-pop enthusiast friends who could have corrected me on that. But well, now I know better.
Now, let's talk a bit about the members. For example, it took me ages to remember who is who. I got their names relatively quickly. After all, 3 out of 4 are names that are very common in the West. So, it was easy to remember Jisoo with the only Korean stage name, although in Jennie's case, it's also her real name, which made it easy to remember her in the group.
Jisoo was also the first member I referred to as my bias simply because I could relate to her the most at that time. Mainly because she seemed to have a bunch of Pikachu stuff, and I'm a big Pokemon fan. Secondly, she was also not good at English, and somehow that comforted me a little back then.
Eventually, I finally got the names right, I could match them to the members. There was a time when I was surprised to find out that Jennie's name was not a stage name but her real name. But I was still new to the whole Korean theme back then and had to familiarize myself to understand that Western names also exist in South Korea.
Since we're already talking about Jennie, let's talk about the rap in BLACKPINK, or rather, who does the rapping in BLACKPINK. I'm well aware that it's Lisa and Jennie, but for quite a while, I thought it was only Lisa. And even today, when I hear BLACKPINK and the word "rap," Lisa still comes to mind first, and then Jennie.

Entering the Magic Shop
KPOP? I don’t know that, I actually don’t like KPOP before. No mature reasoning, I just feel like it’s not my cup of tea.
But 2012 happened, I was introduced to the world of KPOP by a friend who’s into AOA and Infinite back then. It was around late 2012 when I actually came across this article about an upcoming rookie group that’s going to soon dominate the world, and it was pure curiosity at first because I was not really staying in KPOP, I have my original fangirl life. Then they created their Twitter account and posted these random video logs in Youtube and it was just “ok I’ll watch but that’s it” but I soon found myself walking right into the purple door.
Seven young men who have big dreams debuted in June 2013 and I was shocked at first because I found myself being dragged real quick to their world. And now, it has been 8 years since I decided to be a fan of these boys, I’ve seen how much they struggled when they were starting.
No, the rumors about them flopping are not true because they actually received awards when they were rookies and they were nominated in the big awards shows like MAMA and MMA. So, it’s not true that they started as flops, but they struggled. Back in 2013, the competition is kinda loose because the idol industry is not yet that saturated, so those who have nice backings and good companies would definitely be on the spotlight. So yes, they were nominated and they received awards back then, but seeing how there were only few idol groups back then, it’s not actually surprising for a small group like them coming from a small company to get the nominations.
If you’re a new KPOP fan and you have been stressing a lot lately because of fanwars, because of hate comments, because of other fandoms dissing your faves - news flash, it’s not new. When the boys were starting, several hate comments were thrown their way including plagiarism, which is a really bad issue. Knowing they were just starting, it could really be a show-stopper for their career. But that did not dampen their desire to reach their goal. In 2015, 2 years after their debut, they received their first music show win. It was an enchanted moment because it has been years and they haven’t received their first win, knowing that the industry is not that saturated at all (as compared to now). But who would imagine that it was actually the start of their “slowly but surely” journey to the top.
It has been years since I started to support them and to love them, I am actually a multifan who is into KPOP, JPOP, and CPOP, so I am actually a fan of many groups. But I know, at the end of the day, I will always go back to the seven young men who dreamt of reaching the top and they’re actually achieving it now.
I will always be with you, together with our purple thread of fate, until the end.

From Failbooks to Fanatic: My Hilarious Journey into the Wild World of K-Pop!
Well, like many in Germany, your first K-Pop idol was probably PSY and his "Gangnam Style," and maybe later his song "Gentleman" as well. And, it was no different for me. Except back then, I had no clue about K-Pop, and I didn't even perceive PSY as a K-Pop idol. He was just that Korean guy with two damn good songs.
Since it's relevant, let me share some interesting facts about him. For years, he was a mystery to me, if you can call it that, and I'll shed a little light on the matter.
PSY is now 45 years old, still active in music, and married. He is signed to YG Entertainment, which is interesting to me because my favorite girl group, BLACKPINK, is also under that label.
"Gangnam Style" was released in 2012 and brought him international fame. It's been a good eleven years since that song came out.
I don't actively listen to him, but apart from his older songs, I enjoy his newer tracks like "DADDY" and "THAT THAT."
Enough digressions, let's get back to the topic: How did I consciously discover K-Pop? How did I realize it was K-Pop?
Well, it all started with Wattpad, but not even with a book related to K-Pop. It was a so-called failbook that mainly focused on poorly written One Direction fan fictions. I hadn't even listened to the band, but I had a brief phase where I mocked them, but it lasted only a few days. Anyway, the author always mentioned EXO in relation to K-Pop.
At some point, I Googled the group, and their songs "Lotto" and "Monster" immediately captivated me. That was several years ago, and I think those were their latest songs at the time. I liked the darkness of their music videos.
But eventually, my interest in them faded. I can't even remember why exactly; it just didn't match my taste anymore.
Nowadays, I can only name two or three songs of theirs that I still like, and one of them is "Rover," which is a solo by member Kai.
It's also interesting to note that, similar to PSY from the previous video, EXO also has a connection to BLACKPINK. Kai and Jennie were in a relationship for a short time in 2019.
