Journal Entry No. 3 (BLOG): Is Media Necessary for Globalization? My Response: Yep it Totally is!
Observation
While reading the article, I was familiar with the relationship between K-fashion and media in the Philippines. When I was still in High School, I had classmates and friends who were downright obsessed with K-pop idols and would carry the photocards of their biases in top loaders hooked to their IDs and their bags. They would imitate dances from their idols and talk about Korean makeup and fashion trends. Even in college, I still encounter many of my peers who are big fans of certain K-pop groups. I have a friend from the film program who has photocards of his bias framed on the wall in front of his desk, but I digress.
Insight
It is clear that despite being slightly above the poverty line, also known as the "wash line", Filipinos are well-versed in using technology and can be active "receivers" of information on trends as well as the trends themselves. According to the Data Reportal, "The Philippines was home to 84.45 million social media users in January 2023, equating to 72.5 percent of the total population." (Kemp, 2023). This connects to the article's point on how Filipinos are well-versed in non-traditional media and can use it to their benefit as a way to afford K-fashion goods, and other products from Korea in general. By way of buying tickets online and downloading songs illegally. The article also mentions the purchase of counterfeit clothing, which is not uncommon in the Philippines, Sanchez states, "Similar to how most Kpop fans download their music from free websites, they get their K-fashion fix beyond “authentic” clothing stalls and shopping sites that directly import Korean products." (Sanchez, 2017). I feel that this topic is in line with Sir Geoffrey's lecture, how as a result of new media, contact with other cultures increases as we are exposed to their culture via social media. This can be seen already in the K-fashion article as it describes how Korean brands are being established in the Philippines, as well as how K-pop music circulates across the net via free releases or illegal downloads. Another example that can be offered based on my experience is whenever I search for makeup online, K-makeup is often promoted in Shopee, such as Rom&nd, as you can see in the image below. Discounts and coupons are being offered already, which correlates to the same point mentioned in the article, "The Filipinos are versed with the non-traditional media that will allow them to consume goods for a much lower price—or even for free." (Sanchez, 2017).
Learning
Media has such a massive impact on the lives of every person, especially the young people of today. As mentioned in the first section, I have a lot of friends who engage in K-pop actively, as well as invest a lot of time in social media in general. I am the same, as social media is becoming more prominent, and how everyone is designated as a "content creator", I personally feel that this will blur the lines between making memories, sharing them for fun, and producing content meant to be consumed but not truly meaning anything at all. Putting these thoughts aside, I think that Hallyu will last for a very long time since many trends and girl/boy groups will rise and just as quickly fall like sand in an hourglass, it is only a matter of time until the hourglass flips over and the cycle is anew. I think that the analogy of a washing machine is quite fitting, I found it quite interesting. It truly is a neverending cycle. "The world is like a washing machine: It could stop turning, but it will eventually begin another wash cycle." (Sanchez, 2017).

dreamlog 02
In my dream last night... I've been seatching for the sonny angels, smiski, skullpanda, hirono, and basically popmart items here in my local area in the Philippines. People said they have it fullybooked branches but I never really scored one after several attempts. Going around different stores but I couldn't really find one. I don't want to order them online because I want to see it by myself first before choosing and pick a blond box by myself. Additionally, I feel like the *magic* or experience in it fades if I just buy it online. So I was just walking around the grocery store for my weekly groceries as usual, when I stumbled upon a shelf with an almost empty boxes of smiski, skullpanda, and hironos!!!! I got too excited seeing it 😳 plus in a local grocery store?? when I can't even find it in highend stores?? Anyway, besides those items, there were also two more brands or product names that were present, and in my dream it was said that one of those were Han Jisung's comfort item/toy. It was so nice to see and it looked like a fluffy puppy figure. The name of the collectibles already faded in my memory but it has a blue box and the name goes around like "miwoo" or something with a similar vibe. Then, I got busy choosing between the collectibles i'm eyeing because they were infact expensive. But I am being pressured to choose because other customers might take them so I have to quickly choose. In the end I took one hirono and one skullpanda which i've been eyeing. There were no sonny angels available tho, and the smiskis weren't really my thing.
Thoughts: as I've said before, my dreams really fascinate me because they are always so real that I feel like I've actually lived them. today's dream is so me and reflected my recent activity which was I went to a kpop flea market and saw a cool art shop that displayed their sonny angel babies at their desk.

hehe thank you for the tag wolfie :)
music: r&b is my favorite genre but recently i’ve been listening to a shit ton of kpop. i don’t really understand stan culture so i’m not too attached to any one idol but some of my favorite groups are kiss of life, new jeans, and le sserafim. i definitely have a favorite song of all time which is Your Woman by white town. a song i’ve currently had on repeat is Good Luck, Babe! (but who hasn’t?)
me: currently i’m out of the states and in a different country! i’ve been in the philippines for the past few months to help my mental health and i’ve been doing pretty good here. i’ve been hanging out with my grandma a lot
lifestyle: recently i’ve been getting up pretty early cause where i’m staying, it’s less hot early in the morning and i absolutely hate heat. which is a bit hard cause i’ve been staying in a place where you sweat while not even moving. i really only eat what my grandma cooks cause i have to ride my bike to the store and it’s too hot for that shit. i used to love eating spicy food in the states but i already sweat so much here 😩 my grandma doesn’t have aircon so i stay at my uncle’s shop most of the day
writing: i’ve always had a love for storytelling and i guess it translates pretty well to writing. one of my dreams is to publish a book of my own but it’s definitely not coming out anytime soon. i really only write what i’d like to read and it’s a bad habit i have so i’m trying to write out of my comfort zone (key word: trying)
(idk who to tag) 😓: @ajortga , @woewriting , and anyone else that wants to join :D
get to know you? music, lifestyle, writing, etc. just stuff that makes you, you
and maybe tag some people to start a chain? totally optional!
:D sure! thank you for the ask 🫶🏻
music: I love synths like a heathen… I write, primarily, so the lyrics matter a lot to me, but I used to play a couple instruments so I love listening to all parts of a song. hyper pop, pop rock, indie pop, indie rock? I think those are the genre names. my top songs rn are sweet dreams by eurythmics, the other side of paradise by glass animals, and sober by big bang
lifestyle: cathemeral omnivore…? my life currently revolves around school, my job, and other career responsibilities ^^
writing: sporadic (as you can tell rip), I edit in my head and as I write, I’ve always loved analyzing text and really enjoy it!
me: umm I’m having a cold brew with silk oat milk and vanilla torani rn, I have a cat I love her, I get easily overstimulated when it comes to stuff touching me but I’ll watch two youtube videos at the same time, I love food I live to eat, I love the nyt connections
tags: @woewriting @melrodrigo @mindyswhore @marvelfilth @jazzyoranges @sytoran @jjsmaybank20 @alkivm @crazyoffher I’m almost positive I missed something but PLEASE PARTICIPATE if you want <3

This may be an old article from 3 years ago, but these cultural aspects/observations still apply even today. And though this is strictly a Chinese perspective, a lot of these everyday life bits are observed in Overseas Chinese communities in countries such as The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. as well as countries heavily influenced by Chinese culture like Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
I've always liked learning about other cultures and making comparisons between how things are done East vs West. Which probably stems from growing up with two cultures and Mom raising me on American movies xD
So the irony is if you asked me how many Chinese, Taiwanese, or Hong Kong actors I know, chances are I know as much as you do xD Like Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, and that's about it. But if you asked me about Western (specifically American and British) actors, then I have a useless brain dump of movie trivia and who was with who in what movie xD
Hmmm, both Taiwan and the Philippines are two distinct cultures but both look up to a certain country and are fascinated by that. In Taiwan's case, Japan and the US for the Philippines. In both cases, this is due to being under the rule of those countries in their history. Taiwan being under Japan for 50 years, and the Philippines being under Spain for 300+ years, followed by periods of American and Japanese rule. To put it simply though:
Taiwan is "mini-Japan with a very Chinese culture".
The Philippines is "former colony of Spain with lots of American influences".
But unlike the author, I've never set foot in any Western country, so my understandings are strictly what I've observed in media, which while it can be accurate, doesn't compare to actually experiencing the culture.
Some further elaboration on most points:
#1 We quite literally use chopsticks for everything. We use it to pick rice, viands, vegetables, fruit, smaller desserts, almost all the food you can think of.
But where do you put your chopsticks when you're not using them? Just put them on top of your bowl or flat on your plate. But do not ever stick them vertically. It's taboo, since it looks like incense sticks, which we use to pray for those who have passed, like our ancestors or during funerary services.
#3 The majority of Asia is obsessed with fair/white skin. In my time at the Philippines, I grew up watching all these Dove Whitening commercials and my classmates often commented on how fair my skin was, how they envied it etc. In Taiwan, girls often say they don't want to 變黑 (biàn hēi) 'become dark'. Japan and Korea too are not innocent of this either (if their beauty/skin products weren't a dead giveaway).
People here at Taiwan often mistake me for being from Hong Kong or Japan (as long as I don't speak Mandarin with my heavy accent xD). A Taiwanese classmate of mine joked that she often gets mistaken for being from Southeast Asia due to having a darker complexion. And while I laughed it off with her at that time, looking back, I now realize she was lowkey being racist. xD
And believe me Filipinas have mentioned literally being told 'your skin is so dark' here in Taiwan, or being given backhanded compliments like 'you're pretty despite having dark skin' and...*facepalms*
My point is, beauty is not exclusive to skin color. People who still think that are assholes.
#5 Not to say we don't have salt and pepper, but yes soy sauce and vinegar are the classic condiments you see on the table, be it at home or at a restaurant.
And if I may add, Taiwanese love their pepper. xD If you ever get to eat at a night market or a smaller "Mom n' Pop-style" restaurant here, some dishes/soups tend to add quite an excessive amount of pepper. Not like anthills, but quite liberally and way more than average. Enough that you see traces of pepper at the bottom of the food paper bag or swirling in your soup. xD
#6 I know this all too well from personal experience. In my years of studying at Taiwan, I always had roommates. 3 in my first school (I graduated high school in the Philippines pre K-12 so I had to make up 2 years of Senior High), followed by 2 in college, with the exception of 1 in freshman year.
My college did offer single person dorms but at around 9000 NTD ($324) per month compared to around 6000 NTD ($216) per semester. Because I wanted to save, the choice was obvious for me xD. But ah, this doesn't mean I don't value personal space, in fact I love having the room to myself, and since both my roomies would go home to their families every weekend, weekends were bliss for me xD
And you don't have to be friends with your roommates (that's an added bonus however), you just have to get along with them. I was quite lucky to have really great roommates all throughout my schooling years.
#9 In the Philippines, we do. Owing mostly to American influences and maybe being predominantly Catholic? xD
#10 *sigh* Chinese parents and parents from similar Asian cultures tend to put too much emphasis on grades, so much that kids could get sent to cram school as early as elementary. This is because what school you get into could literally affect your future job opportunities, and while that's not exclusive to any particular country/culture, I feel it's especially pronounced here in Asia. I'm really lucky my own parents weren't that strict about it. However, if your parents don't point the mistakes out to you, chances are you'll do it yourself, if you're an Asian kid like me anyway. xD It just becomes a habit.
#11 My family is an exception to this. xD We do say 'I love you' directly, but complete with the 'ah eat well ok?', 'don't scrimp on food', 'sleep well' and similar indirect words/actions of affection. We were doing 'Conceal, Don't Feel' before it became popular. xD
#13 I'm kind of confused about this but this has sort have changed over the years in which eye-contact is now more encouraged. But don't stare, especially at elders and authority figures. Sometimes it's just shyness though. xD And I've observed this with my own Taiwanese friend, especially when I'm complaining or ranting to her about something. xD I'm a person who likes to express my opinions strongly, which tends to scare/alienate some of the locals here, as doing so is kind of frowned upon. Thankfully, she does listen and offers her take on things.
#14 Ah this. xD In the Philippines, this is a common greeting known as beso-beso, and I freaked out too when an auntie did that to me. xD Needless to say, Mom lectured me later on what that was. ^^"
#16 Along with #3 another crazy beauty standard. In my view, people always look better with a little meat on them and when they're not horribly thin. Asia still has a loonng way to go with accepting different types of bodies if you ask me. This combined with modern beauty standards has made the pressure for women especially to 'look beautiful' higher than ever.
I know many people love them but please, starving yourself or glorifying eating disorders is never OK just to get this kind of 'ideal' body. I'm not part of the Kpop fandom, but even I think when idols get bullied just for gaining the least bit of weight among other insensitive comments, that's really going too far.
#17 'If you want to make friends, go eat.' <- I couldn't agree more. In the Philippines we have a greeting: 'Kumain ka na ba?' (Have you eaten?) . Similarly in Taiwan, we have 吃飯了沒? (chī fàn le méi), both of these can mean that in the literal sense but are often used as greetings instead. By then which invitation to having lunch/dinner together may or may not follow. Food really is a way for us to socialize and to catch up with what's going on in each other's lives. Not to say we don't have regular outings like going out to the mall, going shopping, etc. but eating together is a huge part of our culture, be it with family or friends.
And while I'm at it, some memes that are way too accurate good to pass up xD
Parents, uncles, aunties alike will fight over the bill xD
Alternatively:
You just space out until your name is called xD
My parents are guilty of the last one. Logic how? xD
#18 True. xD I like giving compliments out to people but I have a hard time accepting them myself, though I've learnt how to accept them much more now than before. We're kind of raised to constantly downplay ourselves so we often say things like 'ah no no' or 'I'm really not that good'. The downside of this of course is that it can come off as somewhat fake. xD
Again from personal experience, that same classmate who made the lowkey racist remark, she was good, she was on the debate team, was a honor student, knew how to mingle with people, but she downplayed herself way too much, while praising me but I honestly thought that she never really meant it from how she treated me. She wanted to keep me around her yet make backhanded compliments at me and she didn't want me socializing with my other classmate who is now my friend. *sigh* It was only after discussing this with one of my roomies did I realize how this 'excessive downplaying' might come off to people like me who more or less grew up with a more 'Westernized' mindset. I'm not saying brag about your achievements but don't be overly humble about them either, which can also be a turn off.
#20 We do tend to be a lot more realistic on how we view things, neither entirely optimistic nor pessimistic. We try to think of things practically and often analyze things on pure logic. A downside of this however, is that Chinese people can be overly practical. Taiwanese for instance don't like to 'find inconveniences' and generally keep to themselves, meaning, they won't help you in your hour of need even when they do have the capabilities. Sounds really harsh I know, but in my 6 years of living in Taiwan, while this doesn't apply to all the people, a lot of them really do only find/talk to you when they need something.
So for some people saying Taiwanese are 'friendly', that's BS xD If you ask me, Filipinos are infinitely more friendly, and again while not all, generally make more of an effort to help you when you need it. I really felt more of a real sense of community during my years growing up in the Philippines compared to Taiwan.
#21 Children do tend to stay with their parents well into college and adulthood, since Chinese families are indeed very family-oriented, in a lot of cases, grandparents often live under the same roof as us as well! And it really does save a lot of money. I see there's a real stigma in the US when it comes to "living with your parents", but that's starting to change especially because of Covid and having more and more people move back in with their parents.
Housing unfortunately is pretty much hella expensive no matter where you go, and Taiwan is no exception. Steep housing prices and the very high cost of raising a child (schooling + buxiban fees, etc.) contribute to a very low birth rate and thus an aging population like Japan. It's not uncommon to see both parents working in Taiwan.
#23 I'm an overthinker myself, but I totally agree with the author that the best is to strike a good balance between these two. Which I guess is why I love drawing or any other related creative attempts, it helps me be more spontaneous or well, creative! I like to remain intellectually or artistically inspired.
#24 Is French high school really like that? xD My friend did watch SKAM France and more or less got a culture shock from what was depicted on the show. I can confirm however that most high schools both in the Philippines and Taiwan require students to wear a uniform, only in college is everybody free to wear casual/civilian clothes.
#26 Ah this is part of our Asian gift-giving etiquette xD We always open gifts later after the event/meeting and in private. Never open them in front of the person who gave it to you or in front of others. This is to prevent any 'shame/embarrassment' that may result both to yourself and to the gift giver. I know this may come off as something weird since some people may want a more honest response or immediate feedback when it comes to gift-giving, but that's just how it is in our culture. You're always free to ask us though (in private) if we liked the gift or not ^^"
#28 I want to say the same goes to drinking, partying, and drugs however xD Those are things which are still frowned upon in our culture. And to be honest, whenever I see those in movies, it does kind of turn me off xD It doesn't mean that we're "uncool" or "boring", we just think that there are much better or healthier ways of "having fun".
#31 Is this true in France?! Man I would kind of prefer that instead of people being on their phones all the time xD This kind of goes with #20 in that Chinese are overly practical or logical, and don't read fiction as much as nonfiction. My Taiwanese friend is an exception though, she's a bibliophile who loves the feel of paper books compared to e-books, and it's a trait of her that I like a lot. Both the Philippines and Taiwan however have a huge fanbase when it comes to manga and anime though.
I'm all for reading outside of "designated reading" at schools especially. Reading fiction improves your vocabulary too, and can be quite fun! It helps you imagine and really invest in a world/story, and if you ask me something that I feel Westerners are better at, they're more in touch with their emotions and creativity, and are thus much more able to write compelling or original stories. Believe me, I've seen a fair amount of Chinese movies that rip off Western movie plotlines xD
#33 Nothing much to add on here..except that since I'm a "weird" person, Mom often jokes that she got the wrong baby from the hospital. xD
#35 True. While I agree with the care and concern that your fellow community can give you, the downside of this is we tend to only hang out with our own people, e.g Chinese with Chinese, Taiwanese with Taiwanese, etc. I've seen too that it's especially hard to make friends in Japan and Korea as a foreigner. Not only is there the language barrier, but the differences in culture too. In a way, Asians can be pretty close-minded on getting to know other cultures or actually making friends with people from other countries. I know this all too well being half-Taiwanese/half-Filipino, being neither "Filipino" enough nor "Taiwanese" enough. xD It's more of people here being too used to what they're comfortable with.
#36 Oh this is something I feel that Chinese students and other students from similar cultures should really improve on. xD How will people respect you if you don't speak your mind?
I felt bad especially for my Spanish teacher in college, granted it was an introductory course (Spanish I and II) but the amount of times that our teacher had to prompt a student to recite/speak even with clear hints already made her (and me too) extremely frustrated. The thing is, these are college students, I personally feel they don't have any reason to be so shy of speaking and technically by not doing so they're slowing the pace of the class too much and a lot of time is wasted.
Unfortunately you can't always be very vocal with your thoughts and opinions in most Asian cultures. I would say strive for that, but at the same time, play your cards well, especially if you're in a workplace setting.
If you made it to the end, thank you for reading and here's a cookie! 🍪 I'm not perfect and there's bound to be something I missed so please let me know if you spotted anything wrong. Missing Myeongdong, Korea
Annyeonghaseyo! A Korean word for Hello. Since the Korean invasion in our country, Philippines, visiting Korean became the top of my list. From Koreanovelas, KPop artists and music to Korean products and cosmetics, Korea opened my heart to know more of their cultures and appreciate natural products that are really good to our body and skin. Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s main shopping districts…

Korean TV Dramas and All Things Korean Invading the Philippines
It will undoubtedly occur. The expanding fame of Korean TV shows in the Philippines combined with the mass movement of Koreans to the nation will undoubtedly influence media outlets in a larger number of ways than one. As of late, the nearby wireless transmissions have been overwhelmed by Korean pop (Kpop) music particularly by those of the Wonder Girls and 2NE1.
What's more, important for the Kpop bunch 2NE1 is Sandara Park, who used to be one of the most acclaimed superstars in the Philippines. At present, Boys Over Flowers is ostensibly the most loved network show by Filipinos at this moment. The women have experienced passionate feelings for the individuals from the Korean F4, particularly Lee Min-ho and Kim Bum.
So it was inescapable that there would be some tie ups between Korean entertainers and Filipina entertainers. A business featuring Lee Min-ho and Sandara Park was delivered in Korea right around a month prior. The notice for OB's Cass Beer highlighted a kissing scene between the two famous people which made a huge number of Filipinos turn green with envy.

Furthermore, only half a month back Kim Bum went to the Philippines so as to shoot a progression of RC Cola plugs with neighborhood VIP Maja Salvador. The arrangement of ads which is booked for discharge before long will have a sentimental subject. It appears as though this is just the start of tie-ups between the two nations, in any event in media outlets.
Some even say that a Korean attack is as of now occurring in the nation. There are an ever increasing number of Koreans concentrating in Philippine schools and colleges. Korean magazines are currently accessible in neighborhood book shops and their music is presently being sold in record shops. Various markets and eateries have been opened by Koreans too.
Maybe it is just a short time before they begin turning out to be heads of nearby organizations and such perhaps in any event, incredible the achievement of the Chinese in the nation. The truth will surface eventually. Be that as it may, for the time being we should simply appreciate all the Korean TV Dramas and music our hearts want.

intro (very late tho i am sorry)
hello, lovely people! i just realized that I’ve had this account for 6 months, but I still haven’t made a proper introduction. soooo here it is…
basics •19 years old •college freshman •from the philippines •i’m socially awkward (i am soooo open to making friends here, but forgive me if i’m a bit awkward at first ) interests •kpop (mostly girlgroups + ikon/nct/seventeen/exo) •korean dramas •ya books •i’m obsessed with iced coffee (obviously) •my fave thing to do is to explore cute coffee shops classes (this incoming sem) •economics •social science •communication •development theories (last sem) •college algebra •political science •wika & komunikasyon (both filipino classes) •ethics why studyblr? •the main reason behind creating my own studyblr account is my drive to be more productive. i feel like having a studyblr can help me track my study habits better. this actually doubles as my college blog too, so i can look back at my college experience in the future (im such a sentimental person). also, seeing other people’s notes, study habits, etc. inspires me a lot. goals •become a university scholar (this is the highest level of honorific award given to us per sem. this sem i got to be a college scholar, which is the second best award, but i wanna aim high these incoming sems) •graduate with latin honors •learn (i know it seems like a cliché goal. but even beyond the grades and awards, i want to learn more and be able to apply everything in real life) •grow (in terms of study habits, mentality, and overall as a person) •discover what i want in the future (ok so im currently eyeing law school, but idk yet. i hope that these four years of college can help me discover myself more) why is(k)astudiesuniverse •ok i just wanted to explain my username. i am currently studying in the university of the philippines, and students here are called isko/iska. this is a shortened name for “iskolar ng bayan.” iskolar means scholar in english btw. i just kind of fused this with my name, which is isa, and that’s how is(k)a studies was born. ok that was the worse explanation ever. bye thanks for listening to my ted talk ahdjajaj. favorite studyblrs @linguinstics, @studylustre, @studyaurore etc. (huhu i can’t keep track of the others anymore oh no)
thank u for everything. hoping for more growth, productivity, and academic success next year ♡

Sorry for bothering you. I have some questions. I'm new in this fandom. At fist I supported Seungri but now I doubt him. Some vips say that he is victim of media, he run only Aori ramen and Kmedia is lying. I see posts claiming that OT4 won't go on without him. There are so much conflicting information. What exactly did he do? If OT4 had problems with Seungri why were they so nice to him during Last dance tour? Again sorry for bothering I just want to know the whole story.
I’m sorry, I’ve gone over this at length so many times over the last six plus months… do I have the energy to hash it out again in detail? It’s true that there is still confusion over his case, let’s face it, there always will be. It’s also true that there has been misinformation spread on both sides, both for and against him. Accusations that came and went, some that stuck, some that didn’t. All you need to know is that right now, based on the results of the police investigation he underwent this spring, he is currently facing 7 charges (from this article):
Solicitation of prostitution (for himself)
Prostitution mediation (for his foreign investors)
Occupational embezzlement of Burning Sun funds
Occupational embezzlement of attorney’s fees
Instigating destruction of evidence
Violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (sharing a photo believed to be molka)
Violation of the Food Sanitation Act (this is related to Monkey Museum)
He is also currently under investigation for suspicions of gambling while abroad (which, though few fans seem to have a problem with it, is illegal for Koreans) and violating the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act (raising gambling funds through “hwanchigi,” a term that refers to illegal practices surrounding foreign exchange transactions). So if you see people saying he’s facing up to 9 charges, that’s where that number comes from. The first 7 charges are currently in the hands of the prosecution. Police have recommended indictment on all 7, however, it’s up to the prosecution to conduct their own supplementary investigation and decide whether or not to formally press charges against him (i.e., indict him), after which, if indicted, his case will go to court. This is just a thought, but they may be waiting for police to finish up their investigation on the gambling suspicions so that they can make a decision on all charges at once. In the meantime, it seems his enlistment has been postponed indefinitely.
For the record, most VIPs defended Seungri against the Burning Sun allegations (not gonna get into that here, but it’s pretty horrific stuff). The Burning Sun situation is still murky, and probably always will be, but it’s worth noting that Seungri was never booked or earnestly investigated on anything related to the club besides embezzlement of club funds. Then, in late February the prostitution chats were released – chats which appear to show him and his business partners arranging for prostitutes for their foreign investors visiting Korea back in late 2015 – and he was officially booked as a suspect for that. Then, as if things weren’t bad enough for him already, there came the molka/spycam chats, in which women were filmed in sex acts without their permission and their photos and videos secretly shared among friends. We later learned that some of these women had been drugged and raped. Besides that, the text content of the chats themselves and they way these men spoke about the women they’d slept with was just vile.
Based on the very limited evidence we have available to us, Seungri’s involvement in those molka chats was admittedly minimal (at least when compared to the other chat members, many of whom are currently standing trial on rape charges). However, some of these men were close friends of his, and for many people, his knowledge of their despicable acts toward these women and his complacency (in neglecting to report, or at the very least condemn them for it) was enough. We know he viewed at least one molka video and seemed unbothered by it, even laughing at it. That was the point at which many (I would argue most) people dropped his ass like a hot potato, horrified that he’d had any part in it at all.
Everyone has to draw the line somewhere. For many, that was the line. As for me? I remember the first time I saw that headline, and how my heart sank. I was still on his side back then, perhaps not yet realizing just how serious the situation had become, but even so, I knew in my heart that it was the end for him. And sure enough, it was later that same day when he announced his retirement from the entertainment industry.
His supporters will swear up and down that he had nothing to do with it, but from his own mouth, in his Chosun Ilbo interview, he knew. And not only that, he apparently helped them dispose of evidence when the news broke by alerting them that they were in trouble and instructing them to change their phones (hence the “instigating destruction of evidence” charge). And this is to say nothing of the ridiculous explanation he came up with for the prostitution chats: that he was just providing girls for his female friend to party and go shopping with, an explanation that was shot down by that very friend who he tried to use as an alibi. So when you said “now I doubt him”? Yeah. Us too.
There’s so much more to this saga. So much more. And it’s ongoing. But I’m so tired of going over it again and again and again. The fact is, Seungri asked to have his contract with YG terminated and announced his withdrawal from the industry. So whether you like him or not, continuing to pledge your support to him is just a massive waste of time. Seungri has been a retired singer for six months now, and the cold hard reality is that since March 2019 Big Bang has been four members. G-Dragon, TOP, Taeyang, Daesung. They are still with us. They are who will stand on the stage before us again. They are who will bring us new music and feature in new videos. They are our future as a fandom. If we want more of Big Bang, if we want to see the band continue on at all, we have to express a willingness to support them as they are, now and for the foreseeable future. Otherwise, it’s like Youngbae said during Last Dance: it will be goodbye for real. And who wants that?
Seungri has been locked in an intense media and legal battle for almost all of 2019 – nearly nine months now. And I don’t see things getting better for him anytime soon. This could easily drag on for another three months, until the end of this year. It could go on for six. It could even stretch on for twelve, if he’s indicted on all charges and his case goes to trial. When you factor in enlistment, the absolute soonest Seungri can even think about being active again as an entertainer is in 2-3 years’ time. It has already been almost 3 years since BB’s last comeback. Does anyone really think they’re going to make themselves and us endure another 2-3 year wait (at best!) for a retired member to return to them before they'll release new music again as a group? When they wanted him to enlist alongside them, but he chose not to? And then became the center of the biggest controversy in kpop history? After they begged him not to get in trouble while they were away?
“If OT4 had problems with Seungri why were they so nice to him during Last dance tour?”
I don’t want you guys to think I’m spreading the message that BB ever hated Seungri. It’s more complex than that. I think they cared for him, but I think they were also frustrated with him. I think they wanted what was best for him and were concerned for him. I think they wanted to put their trust in him, knowing that he alone would be carrying the name Big Bang in their absence, but given how distant he’d become and the questionable connections he’d made, couldn’t help being wary of him.
And more than anything? I think they felt they’d lost him. For several years now. And it’s so damn sad.
Somehow, somewhere along the way, to someone (those friends of his) or to something (money and fame, greed and pride, power and envy, you name it), he slipped through their fingers. It wasn’t always this way between them, I’m sure of it. But sometimes people change, often as a result of their changing circumstances. Seungri, unhappy with his present situation (circa 2015, maybe even earlier), found a new passion and a new social circle (a problematic one)… and the closer he grew to them, the farther he drifted from BB. They said they only ever saw him onstage. Said they made plans together but he’d often cancel at the last minute. Said he was always overseas with his other friends and business associates. Said he was “totally a businessman” and that he “didn’t want to work [as a singer] anymore.” They said it seemed that Big Bang had become “business” to him and that all he ever talked about with them was money. I think they felt that though he stayed with them, he did so for all the wrong reasons, reasons that no longer included a passion for music. He didn’t even invite them to his last birthday party before they all enlisted, his big island resort birthday bash in the Philippines (and we’ve all seen that Last Dance tour behind-the-scenes clip in which GD scolded him harshly for it. In hindsight, they dodged a bullet by not being there, seeing as that party was under scrutiny this year for suspicions of prostitution mediation).
Sorry. At this point I’m just rambling. You say you want to know the whole story? Yeah, well, so do the rest of us. But for now, the best we can hope for is that it’s not over for Big Bang. So please, let’s give all our love to the four who remain.
#I can't believe writing this moved me to tears wtf#11% abv beer will do that to ya I guess#don't call me a lightweight!#lol#it's called dragon's milk btw#good stuff#bigbang#seungri#ask#anon#burning sun#I just feel terrible for all of them... everyone#this whole year has been so damn tragic for so many people
