I’m not complaining about how any of this was done but I am fascinated by the decision to do the end of Crooked Kingdom now instead of after all the other events that preceded it

Possibly my one complaint is that they didn’t at all convey the sheer panic that was supposed to go along with the outbreak of the plague. No one in Pekka’s joint even seems to care.

I haven’t read any of the books with Nikolai but I’m in love with him immediately

Okay listen I have a big problem with Kaz telling Nikolai where Alina went after accepting the jewels to not do that. I get the whole “he already figured it out” excuse is semi-valid but that does NOT fly with Kaz Brekker. His whole THING is that he keeps any bargain he strikes. You can’t have him say ‘the deal is the deal’ and then have him break the deal. I forgave you for toning him down because he WAS a little difficult to root for at times in the books and the goal was to make him palatable to a broad audience. But you can’t tone him down and yet then go the opposite direction with one of the best parts of his character!

That being said, I think they softened him a touch too much, and I wish they had let him keep his Six of Crows introduction which was just so incredibly badass

Obligatory disclaimer: so, I read the first book of the trilogy, once, over a year ago. I read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, also over a year ago but multiple times. I am definitely one of those ‘watching it for the crows’ people. That being said, I didn’t dislike Shadow and Bone, I just wasn’t as into it.

Love the nuance of making Alina half-Shu, and the microaggressions she faces because of it. Really well done.

Overall they did a great job with Mal considering what they had to work with lol

Why does Pekka have an Irish accent? Actually a better question would be why does everyone except Pekka and Matthias have British accents? Shouldn’t they sound, y’know, Russian? And Dutch?

I’m torn on the whole thing with Alina burning the maps rather than just having her unit assigned to the trip. I mean, on the one hand, yay agency for Alina! On the other hand, to have her first use of that agency to be to do something incredibly stupid and risky that pretty much indirectly gets all her friends killed? And then to never mention those friends again? It’s, uh ... a narrative choice, certainly.

Alexei jumping off the skiff is similarly dumb but I understand they needed him to bring the plot to Ketterdam so I’ll allow it.

Love the parallel they set up with Dreesen promising to let Alexei go free and then killing him, versus both Darkling repeatedly saying he was a man of his word and sometimes keeping it and sometimes not, and Kaz actually being a man of his word in the last episode.

I hate the trope of someone keeping letters from reaching another person because I genuinely don’t see why the character in question doesn’t say “hey, who’s stealing my fucking mail?” if you really are that close you should know he’s writing to you and you’re not getting his letters, but somehow the character always falls for it

As someone who has not read the other two books in the trilogy, really wondering what’s up with Mal being able to hear the stag. And, you know, how he survives this scene.

Darkling asking Mal what Alina’s favorite flower is and then getting her a bouquet of them is peak level petty for a man who’s several centuries old

Okay. Okay. I have a major complaint here. That is not how the whole tailor thing works, and this is a problem because it’s a huge plot point in Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom. A tailor can’t change someone’s entire face. Nina’s only able to do it because she’s high off her gourd on jurda parem. When Genya changes Wylan’s face back later, it takes her literal hours. If they could just wave a hand and change someone’s entire face, then you’d run into all sorts of Polyjuice Potion shenanigans. Okay, there are only a few tailors, but even so! It just! Doesn’t work that way!

Also as a sidebar, you’d think if she was able to change someone’s entire face she’d be able to seal a bleeding artery. RIP Marie you deserved better.

Ugh I just fuckin love how clever Kaz is, we stan a badass genius

You know, on first watch I was wondering why Alina believed Baghra when she had very little evidence, but on second watch it’s not about evidence or facts at all. Baghra manipulates her just like Darkling did, making her feel small and stupid for ‘falling for it’. Alina naturally wants to prove that she’s not stupid, which she does by then believing Baghra.

Kaz’s face when he realizes Inej killed someone to save him I’m *clutches chest, sobbing*

I will never be over Alina climbing into that trunk and Jesper’s ‘is this really happening face’, literally every book-to-show change is forgiven because it led to that moment

Nina’s so clever here and I’m crying because it doesn’t work out ;_;

The climactic scene on the skiff was INSANE and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it even the second time so I’d just like to take a moment to scream in no particular order! Mal + crows teamup! Jesper shooting at Darkling! Kaz grabbing Jesper to protect him! Inej getting a knife right in the gap of Darkling’s kefta! Kaz taking out a volcra with his fucking cane! Zoya being Zoya! Mal shooting Darkling just, so many times! Alina stabbing the piece of stag bone right out of Darkling’s hand! Using Inej’s knife! So much incredible stuff in this scene!

One change I don’t like is that they had Zlatan there ready to attack the skiff and kill everyone on board – kind of softens Darkling’s decision to murder an entire city by making it look at least semi-justified

That being said, Darkling wasn’t entirely, you know, wrong. Sometimes I become disturbed at how much I agree with villains who are like “the thing is, humanity is the worst”.

Also Baghra was full of shit because she said he created the fold on purpose and he obviously didn’t? Like, use dark forbidden magic on purpose, check. Kill a bunch of people on purpose, check. Create the fold on purpose? Nyet.

“I don’t have the right to tell you what to do with your shot at freedom” Jesper you are KILLING me here

Why do fantasy characters always yank arrows out? I guess I should just be glad she broke the head off first.
