In 1972, Misaki, a notable honour student in Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3, died in the middle of the school year. The other classmates, astonished by their classmate's untimely demise, decided to carry on as if he or she were still alive, including keeping and carrying the desk to the graduation ceremony. Nobody could explain why a classmate who had died and been buried was included in the graduation picture. Then, in the spring of 1998, a student named Kouichi Sakakibara enrolled in the class and began to notice the ominous atmosphere that pervaded it.
