Why I love Korra and Asami as a couple

Hi everyone!

Today December 19th is the anniversary of Korra and Asami as a couple. Particularly this day represents a lot to me, in principle because also a 19th (but November) is the anniversary with the girl of my life (we have been together for 8 years). Somehow this day represents the love I feel for her and that is reflected in the beautiful couple who are Korra and Asami.

I must say that when The Legend of Korra was released I was quite excited (I'm a big fan of Avatar The Legend of Aang), after seeing the first 3 episodes I gave up on the series, one because I hate to wait to see new episodes and two because it didn't reach convince me the context (technological) that was raised. After some years I finally saw the whole series and I understood that I had been wrong to not continue watching the series because I would have discovered something incredible, but maybe it wasn't the moment.

I firmly believe that there are no coincidences, that everything happens when it should. When the Legend of Korra premiered I was 20 years old, now I am 26 (about to turn 27 years old) and in these 6 years I have made many mistakes, more than I would have liked and each one has cost me very expensive, it's a bittersweet feeling but it has taken me 6 years to understand that I was wrong, to understand that I should trust more in myself and in my dreams, that I am stronger and braver than I could have thought in the past.

I learned this from my mistakes , but also thanks to this series and of course thanks to The Legend of Aang, both are two of my favorite series and both have pushed in my worst moments, with Aang I learned that it is important to train the mind and with so only 17 years I started to follow the Buddhist teachings, now at 26 I understood how important it is to train the body too, 3 months ago I go to the gym and when I started I weighed 231 pounds, now I weigh 220 pounds and although I still need to lose a lot of weight since I exercise I feel more happy and with more energy, I know that with patience I know that I can get healthy and please, a good reason to go to the gym is that we all want Korra's biceps.

Back to the subject, I already had a notion that Korra and Asami ended up being a couple, I never investigated well and it was just a rumor for me. This year it took me to one of the lowest and darkest points in my life, that's why I went back to see The Legend of Aang and I started to see The Legend of Korra, "woow" is all I can say, these series changed my life and probably a lot of people may seem silly, but for me it is very important and valuable.

Here we go with the second reason why I love the couple of Korra and Asami and it's that it represents many ideals and dreams, it reflects the true love, the love that supports, that is there when you need it most but that gives you the space enough to grow as an individual.

It represents a hope, especially for the people of the LGBT+ community to which I belong proudly, because I am a transsexual man, what I discovered at 24 years of age, before that I lived my life as a lesbian girl (if you don't know about the subject or have any questions, I can gladly answer) but I was unhappy, I felt that something was missing and I was constantly afraid to show who I was, that's why I don't believe in coincidences, because even though I had wanted to know before what being a transsexual wouldn't have been able to deal with it because I wasn't as strong and courageous as I'm now, I couldn't have defended myself from all the people who have attacked or discriminated against me in some way, so I am happy to have discovered that one of my favorite series is a great support for the community LGBT+, right now other series are doing it but 6 years ago The Legend of Korra was already breaking paradigms to present a group of young and old women totally empowered and brave, about all for presenting two bisexual women as a couple in a series aired on a children's channel.

I applaud and admire the work of Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. The LGBT+ community is now having great support and that will always make me happy, whether or not you are part of this community, we are all coexisting together, we should feel love and compassion for all beings in this world, instead of hate and discrimination or abuse.

The Legend of Korra co-creator Bryan Konietzko has shared a new piece of Korra and Asami artwork that he'll be showing at the The Legend of Korra / Avatar: The Last Airbender Tribute Exhibition at Gallery Nucleus. The art will be sold as an exclusive print at the exhibition, and Konietzko will donate the entirety of his proceeds to an LGBTQ suicide prevention hotline. The Korrasami romance was one the shipping community had been supporting for some time during The Legend of Korra's four seasons on the air, though most assumed that a same-sex pairing would never be made canon on a show aimed at a younger demographic. They were pleasantly surprised when the show ended with the implication that Korra and Asami were indeed entering into a romantic relationship, and even more pleased when the creators confirmed this as canon.
