XO, Kitty and the start of the queer character evolution.

(Spoilers for XO Kitty Below!)

I’m always one for teen dramas. It’s a guilty pleasure that I take much delight in. Classic rom-coms like 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless have always been my favourites. But to me, they always felt too straight. Too much heteronormative things and none of the queer rep I always wanted, even in more modern films and TV Shows in the genre. 

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has always been one of my favourtie movies, so, when I found out about the spin off series XO, Kitty, I was ecstatic. Kitty had always been a character I resonated with and I loved all of Jenny Han’s other work. 

Going into it, I expected the classic two boys fighting over one girl love triangle, a gay best friend and the girl best friend that I always seem to ship the main character with. I had predicted most of the story from the start. Until.

XO, Kitty is far from the ‘girl meets boy’ I was familiar with. It’s a queer love story and a coming out story and a self-discovery story. Definitely not the black and white romance i thought it would follow. 

We have Q, the GBF, who is far from the feminine male sterotype you see in teen TV. He doesn’t give Kitty fashion advice and makeovers (which isn’t a bad thing btw), but a jock, the atheltic scholarship kid, who sure, does know a good dress when he sees one, but takes on a character that’s still such a worthy queer person without having to fall into the feminine sterotype. 

Then we have Yuri, the Korean ‘it’ girl, also the girl best friend. She’s not the bimbo pick me girl you think she might me. She’s complex and interesting and she’s gay. Her storyline is something you don’t see often, and they really delve into the struggles of what it’s like being queer in a place and family where you’re not allowed to. Her journey is beautiful and powerful and reflects the coming out struggle in such an honest way, without making her story as a queer person just about coming out. She says the line ‘I have to live a fake life just so you’ll keep loving me’, when coming out to her mum and that encompassed so much of my current queer experience, especially as a person of colour. I think that it was for me, a sort of ‘Hey! we’re in the same boat’ thing and really made me feel so much more seen. She’s a well developed queer character that isn’t reduced to a ‘placed there just for representation’ character.

And we have Kitty herself. The main character. I honestly did not expect Netflix and the producers to go in this direction, but Kitty is queer. At first, I didn’t know if they were just sorta doing it for the sake of it. It didn’t feel like a deliberate decision. Maybe more of a thought that crosses her mind during the show. But Kitty has a crush on Yuri, and the way they address it is so different. They don’t exactly show that coming out to yourself thought process (which I kind of wish they did), rather, Kitty likes Yuri and she just accepts that, which I think is cool. I like now we don’t always need this big revelation moments (although, they’re still cool), but I think it shows the progression of how we treat queer characters as not spectacles for the audience, but just, people. Kitty’s crush on Yuri also felt very resemblant to my own crush on my friend which was probably why I related to her so much but just in general, it felt so natural to just have a queer main character in a non-queer focused show. Like, this wasn’t Hearstopper. No one expected it to be, yet, here we are, and I’m so happy about that.

This evolution into organically created queer characters is something we defnintely need more of and I’m so glad that Netflix is taking the step to do so. ALTHOUGH I REALLY HOPE THIS IS NOT BECAUSE THEY’RE TRYING TO GET REDEMPTION FOR CANCELLING ALL THE OTHER SAPPHIC SHOWS. 

I also feel like though, that Jenny Han is just like a great person because whenever it’s her books being adapted, there’s always this like ‘organic queerness’. Like, in The Summer I Turned Pretty, there’s this guy Jeremiah, who in her book is presented as this straight guy, but in the show he just like kisses some guy and it was a dileberate from of causal representation (if that’s even a thing). Like kissing that guy didn’t add to the plot, but it wasn’t queerbaiting either because (well for me personally) I felt like the directors were like ‘This is Jeremiah. He’s queer, and he’s a main love interest’ and being queer didn’t like shatter the earth around him, it was just a part of him, as it is for all queer people.

But XO, Kitty itself aside from Kitty and Yuri is so good (maybe because I’m a sucker for these things), but everything about it just makes me squeal. I feel like teen TV is taking a turn in terms of creating realistic characters. And while we still have a long way to go (GENDER DIVERSE AND CULTURALLY DIVERSE PEOPLE!!!! CMON NETFLIX), XO, Kitty feels like a really big win for queer (and especially QPOC) people.

Life had been proceeding regularly for Min Ho, studying for school, dates with hot girls, dealing with Kitty Song Covey, and more dates with hot girls. Other than his parents who depressed him and Kitty, who annoyed him he had no real personal drama. Or at least, drama that was exciting.

So, he decided he would make himself some fun drama. it was random Thursday lunch where he sat with Q and his crush, Florian.

"I want a new toy," He whined into his Gimbap

"Well, you have the money to buy whatever you want," Florian stated plainly

"Not like that, material is failing to make me happy right now. I need like a project." He dropped his chopsticks and crossed his arms

"You should give some loser a makeover like 'She's all that'." Q Snorted

"Yeah!" He snapped his fingers "Alright, help me pick a loser to change the life of!" He started spinning his head around in search of a 'loser'.

"No, no," Q and Florian both halted him

"You can't just objectify someone like that, they're not your Barbie." Q reprimanded

"But please, all these girls would drop at the chance to spend some time with me. I really need this."

"Alright, one little frumpy person that just needs some style direction. But if they fall in love with you or something, you must let them down easily."

"Perfect. And when I take them shopping, I'll take you to get goodies."

"Now, I'm in." Florian leaned toward the table.

The boys finished their food quickly and started walking laps around the cafeteria as they meandered toward the tray drop-off. No glaringly unattractive people were in the cafe, so they went outdoors. Nothing, in fact, the day was windier so there were few people to scout anyway. They stalked the halls on their obnoxiously long lunch period and took the final resort to the library. A hub for geeky weirdos.

The giant library was a lot to handle in the remaining seven minutes before they were again in class. Min Ho raced up the stairs, motivated to find a distraction and there she was. A fashion disaster. his savior.

In a corner, she sat greedily ripping bites of a green apple and reading some old dusty book. Bingo. Her hair was ratty, and she wore thick glasses and obnoxiously colored knee-high socks. She had some hot pink lip gloss smeared on her teeth and her eyebrows had never seen a pair of tweezers. She was the perfect mess.

Florian and Q closed in behind Min Ho.

"Wow, she's perfect." floran stated

"I know. Who even is that?"

"A total nobody," Florian replied

"Oh, you mean (Y/n)?" Kitty popped up behind the three boys, scaring the life out of Q. "She sits behind me in Chemistry. She's really smart and nice. She helped me with last week's exam."

"She's my little disaster." Min Ho rubbed his hands together and made his approach

"Uh, what does he mean?"

"You'll figure it out."

"Heyyy, (Y/n), Right?" the girl sighed and closed her book with a slam. She looked up at him. He made a 'yeesh' type face at seeing her closer up and she stood and looked him up and down.

"What do you want Min Ho?"

"I wanted to take you on a date."

"Yeah right," she snorted and made her escape. Before she could leave he grabbed her by the elbow.

"Why do you believe me?"

"Because I'm not your type."

"What if I make you my type?"

"What the hell does that mean?"

"Just a little makeover, you know but you some lip gloss that doesn't make you look like a snaggle-toothed hooker."

"Fuck you!" she yelled in Korean and stomped off

Florian, Q, and Kitty ran up to him

"What the hell was that man!" Kitty whipped the back of his head

"Your approach is far too abrasive mon cher."

"Guys we need to get to class. But this conversation is not off the table let's just put a pin in it. For the most part, His three friends were radio silent for the walk to class. But Min Ho wouldn't shut up. He truly didn't understand what he had done wrong. The whole walk he pestered the three friends ignored him as he whined. He clearly didn't understand what he had done and how wrong it was.

This continued throughout the class. For the first time, a teacher reprimanded him for talking during class. After class, he whined all the way to the final block. He was driving everyone up a wall. including Dae who was the most patient of people. Florian already blocked Min Ho out. But the rest of the group had to suffer his ignorant whining.

"Dude, you can't just tell a girl she's ugly and then tell her you're gonna fix her. Especially in order to make her worthy of a date with you." Q explained

"You don't see how that's messed up?" Dae whined

"NO,"

"Maybe she should give you a makeover?"

"Why?" They were approaching the Chem room.

"She's the top of the girls' class and hasn't told anyone unless they ask her. She tutors like four people a day, six days a week. That's a whole class of people that she saves the asses of. And you need a lesson on humility."

"She's right, I was totally going to fail my history test last month. But she was able to get me to understand a whole unit in one night. Florian looked up from behind his phone.

They entered the Chemistry classroom and Min Ho gave her a good look up and down.

"It makes sense she would be top of the class, she looks like her only plans are you get good grades and be asleep by nine.

"I have working ears asshole."

He dropped his bag down and walked up to her desk. She sighed upon his arrival while he dragged a stool out to sit down with her.

"Why don't you just let me fix you up a little? I bet after some zhuzhing I can get you a date with any guy you want. Or-or girl, I don't really know you're preferences."

"I prefer to be left alone."

"There's really no person at this school that you don't want to dress up for?"

"I didn't say that, I just don't want to spend extended, unmandated time with you."

"Oh? So who's the guy? Or girl." He cleared his throat.

"You wouldn't know him. and he's not really worth wasting my time with you."

"Really tell me who it is and I'll turn you into his dream girl." he leaned on both his fists.

"No," Her cheeks rosed dramatically

"Well, he's clearly worth it if you're blushing that much."

"Shut up I'm not blushing! And I'm not allowed to even think about pursuing a boy until I have my master's degree."

"Says who?" "My mom." she crossed her arms, clearly insecure.

"Well that's stupid unless you get a really accelerated education, you'll be too old to get a good husband."

"Ugh, it's like just when you're about to be a genuine and sincere person, you have to take a swan dive and be an asshole."

"Look, I don't say this often, but I'm going to have to pull out the p-word." he huffed dramatically and looked to her right "Erg, please let me give you a makeover. Have some ughh pity on me. Ew, that was two."

"Huh," her expression lightened and she crossed her arms with purpose "I almost don't hate the sight of you begging. Maybe if you could look me in the eyes while you grovel a little harder, I'll do it." She had a victorious smirk on her face.

For the first time in his life, Min Ho had to swallow his pride. He dropped to his knees before he stared her directly in the face. He put his ridiculously soft hands on her kneecaps.

"Please (Y/n), let me give you a makeover. I could make you the hottest girl in this school. Please I'll do anything."

"You got your mom's genes. You're not a half-bad actor. Srh open her notebook and scribble something on a sheet of paper. He watched her tear the slip out of her notebook, food it, then hand it to her.

"I'm free Friday at seven, text me if I should go over to your dorm or if you're coming to mine." Min Ho scramble to his feet and returned to his assigned spit as the professor began a lecture on something no one but he cared about. Poor Min Ho had to do the second thing he hated most besides saying please. He had to wait. He had to be patient and adhere to (Y/N)'s schedule because he was powerless in this situation.

Friday afternoon rolled painstakingly slow toward him. Like watching a train come to a stop at the station but it just keeps going, no end in sight. Finally class was over so he only had around 3-4 hours until she showed up.

Ok, I won't be there any later than 7:15

I'm tutoring someone until six thirty

Min Ho knew that his dorm was on the complete opposite side of the campus so it would make sense if she need 20 or so minutes to get over. But 7:15? They agreed on seven, why would she try to stand him up like that? All of his roommates fled the premise by four, sick of his caterwauling and watching him desperately check the time on his phone. Well, she was knocking on his door no later than 7:02 Pm and he leaped off the couch.

She looked just as much of a mess as she did yesterday. Today, maybe even worse. Foundation was caked into the corners of her nose and some new zits had sprouted that he hadn't noticed yesterday.

"Took you long enough!" he whined

"I'm 13 minutes earlier than I told you I would be. I picked us up some salads from the cafeteria since we were skipping dinner."

"That's awfully considerate of you." He took the salad from her hand and directed her to the bathroom. Alright, the first thing you gotta do is strip."

"What!"

"You somehow managed to make our school uniform frumpy," HE pulled out a set of silk pajamas and hand them to her then turned around. "Don't worry I won't look." He put his hands over his eyes.

He waited a moment until she told him to turn around. She looked pretty in his pajamas, ew.

"Now, you're going to get tell your prescription so we can you some contacts. These thick lenses aren't doing you any favors babe."

"Hurtful," He pulled the glasses off her face

"Wow, your whole face just opened right up." then she squinted almost instantly

"Ugh, I'm a negative 5.5."

"Jesus you're blind." he rolled open a drawer and pulled a headband on her. "Alright now, we have to fix your mustache and your unibrow.'"

"I don't have a unibrow!"

"Yeah, and I'm the king of the jungle." He grabbed a pair of tweezers "Now," he held them up "This is going to sting." he spent a while whacking away at her face. Every two seconds there was an 'ow' or an 'ouch' from her

"Quit whining you, baby."

"How would you like it if I took metal to your sensitive bits?"

"Well, I prefer to have actual girls near my sensitive bits." she reared back at his flirtatious comments. "Alright, we're gonna need some wax for your upper lip." He stood up a got little strips and while he had her heat them up between her hands, Min Ho texted an eye doctor to buy 6 month worth of lenses in her script. They were set to arrive by Monday, so he bought express shipping.

He took the thin strips from her hand and gently massage the wax against her skin. Then with a 1..2...3... he ripped it off and she instantly grabbed her lip with a shriek.

"OW! What the fuck! No warning?"

"Yeah, you would have pussied out."

"You're not wrong." She watched him pull out some bottles and then leaned closer to her face to inspect them.

"Hmm, moderate to dry skin, with some stress acne. Worried about your grades?"

"No tuition, I'm on scholarship." it just flowed out of her so easily. What about him was so persuasive that she would let her guard down like that?

"Well, I know just the routine to clear your skin right up. you'll glow like my pecs fresh out of a sauna." she pictured that for a moment and then shook her head

"Ew, I don't want to look like you're sweaty boobs."

"Watch it, these" he grabbed his chest "Are pectorals."

"Yeah, yeah, you and your very macho man titties can shove it." He spins her around in her chair and tipped her head back for her.

"Just relax, I'm gonna make you glow like baby Jesus."

"No, I'd rather look as pretty as Mary Magdalen." For the next forty minutes he cleansed, moisturized, and serum her face. She fell asleep under his soft palms as he rubbed and patted her face. He was startled as a snore escaped her. He poked her cheek and she didn't react although as he released his grip on her head, it lolled to the side.

"Oh shit, Uh (Y/n)? (Y/n)? he drawled the first syllable f her name..

In the last-ditch effort, he shook her shoulder and he was still as a rock. until she nearly rolled out of the chair she was sitting in. he caught her by the shoulders and picked her up. Like a child, she wrapped her arms around his neck. She clung to him with desperation. It was refreshing to feel someone rely on him.

he walked past the couch and paused for a moment toying with the thought of leaving her there. He sighed and walked her to his bedroom and placed her on his mattress. He sat with the idea of staying in his bed as well. Eventually, he grabbed a blanket from his closet and marched to the aforementioned couch. He spent the night on the stiff couch and listened to his roommates filter back in.

"Oh hey Min Ho," Q stated casually and walked to his room with Kitty

"Sup Min Ho," Dae greeted off-hand and walked into their room. A shriek resounded from Dae and Min Ho's bedroom. Min Ho shot off the couch and ran into their shared room.

"What is she doing in here? Who even is she?" he whisper-yelled.

"She fell asleep mid-facial. So I just put her in bed," he explained like it was nothing

"Well, you can be nice? who would have known." Dae walked into their bathroom with a handful of clothing. He returned in pajamas and rubbed in some moisturizer. "Take my bed, I'm gonna go sleep on the couch, I don't want to be alone with her." Dae grabbed his pillow and blanket. He returned with Min Ho's thousand-thread count blanket and silk-cased pillow. Min Ho caught them as they were tossed at him. He set himself up on Dae's mattress and took one final look at (Y/n). Her face was so relaxed and peaceful. He fell asleep gazing at the slopes of her temples swaying down her cheekbones and at her lips.

The dorm awoke with a relaxed sigh as Saturday light filtered through the curtained windows. Min Ho's internal clock awoke perfectly at seven in the morning. He yawned and stretched. Something in the corner of his eye caught his gaze. (Y/n), he remembered. She looked less peaceful now. Some drool dripped out the corner of her mouth and her hair looked teased.

Min Ho moved past her to start his morning routine. Twenty-four steps in Q barged in to pee. Min Ho left the room for that, because gross. And as he was walking back in Dae cut him off to get to his morning shower.

"Damnit," He put his roller down on the kitchen counter and began preparing breakfast. Kitty stumbled out of her dorm with giant morning hair. She groaned and sat down at the table reaching for the mug of coffee Min Ho was pressing to his lips.

"Well, good morning to you. Did ya sleep well?" he put the mug down and slid it at her.

"No, I feel so gross at this whole Dae and Yuri thing," she whispered their names

"Alright well, don't let your sour mood spoil my day."

"Well, where's your girlfriend?" she took the mug and drank from it

"She is not my girlfriend!"

"You say that like it's a bad thing?" she immerged from the bedroom.

"It's not, I'm kitty by the way."

"I know, you're the Portland stalker," Kitty grunted in response ad she just giggled at her anger

"Good Morning," Min Ho tried to start over

"Morning asshole,"

"We're gonna start you on a skincare routine. Just once Dae gets out of the shower." Almost in response, Dae immerged from the shower with drippy hair and a towel around his waist. Min Ho grabbed (Y/n)'s wrist and dragged her into the bathroom. The air was still thick and steamy. The fan whirred like white noise as Min Ho brushed out (Y/n)'s hair. He clipped her hair back as he gave her a spare toothbrush and some expensive charcoal toothpaste. While she brushed, he browsed his massive collection of expensive lotions and cleanses. He started her with a gentle witch hazel cleanser, then a leave-in hair mask with jojoba oil. while she dotted brightening cream in her eyebags. MinHo noticed one glaring detail as he put eye masks on her.

She had been smiling the whole time. She batted her eyes which were weighed down by the heavy silicone.

"What?" he smiled back involuntarily

"This is fun,"

"I though girls said beauty is pain?"

"Well, then you must just be in anguish." Another first ripped from him he felt himself blushing at her. "Aww looks who's rosy now."

"Shut up," he spot treated some zits while she giggled at his torment.

He applied about five more things and then spun her around to look in the mirror. Other than her quickly receding pimples, her skin looked gorgeous.

"Min Ho, you're a miracle worker!" she got up on her tiptoes to hug him "My hair looks a little crazy right now, but I'm beginning to trust the process."

"Well, you have an appointment in less than an hour. We'll just wing by your dorm to pick you up some clean clothes."

"Oh my god I broke curfew!" she scrambled to her phone to see texts from all three of her roommates. Somehow they had managed to cover for her claiming that she had some dairy accidentally at dinner and should be out of commission for a while. Despite sleeping in different beds she felt an immense sense of 'walk of shame'.

The walk was quite shameful, mostly because for the first time people were paying attention to her. Or at least people were paying attention to Min Ho being with her. The dorm advisor was suspicious to see (Y/n) bring Min Ho up to her dorm. She was never one to be the type to bring boys over.

For the time being he left her be. She was smart. They walked through her dorm and Min Ho threw open her closet. His face dropped in horror.

"What the hell is this?"

"My clothes?"

"They're all garbage, I'm taking you shopping after your appointment." MinHo managed to pull together something decent from her wardrobe.

"Here try this on." This time, he didn't turn around. He watched her place the clothes are her neatly made bed and then open a drawer and pull of a bra and underwear.

"Well turn around,"

"Right," he spun around and covered his eyes again.

"Alright, we're good." He spun around and uncovered his eyes.

"Well, look who has a figure? You look good."

"Well, you are going to be late for your hair appointment." He ushered her out of the dorms, off campus, and into some fancy salon. The music was booming and he just left her there. Some very high-class man from Europe took to her hair. combing, spritzing bleaching dying, toning, combing blow drying, and curling. She sat in that chair for hours.

The overwhelming toxic fumes of dry shampoo and bleach were starting to permeate her brain. She started to drift off as the stylist began snipping and razoring her overgrown hair. She woke up after an undetermined time to someone poking her shoulder. Her bleary eyes laid upon Min Ho.

"Man, you drool so much."

"Huh,"

"Just kidding you managed to keep it in your mouth this time. Do you want to see yourself now?" He unblocked the mirror.

(Y/n) slid her glasses back on and blinked toward the mirror.

For the first time in about seven hours, she got to see her rapidly evolving appearance. The quality of her hair was bordering on Kpop Idol. Soft bangs had been carved in a way that she could still sweep them behind her ears. Gentle beach waves had been curled into a perfect alternating pattern of counterclockwise-clockwise. The balayage she had gotten 8 months ago was completely gone. Instead, her natural color had been darkened, and the under-layer of her hair was dyed a dark pastel pink.

She looked incredible.

Min Ho noticed that after he noticed how she smiled. The whitening toothpaste had done wonders for her smile. The smile split her face from its constant state of seriousness. In fact, her whole face was glowing. Not because of any of Min Ho's work but because it was her. And she was confident. It was beautiful and enticing.

"What do you think?" she twisted in the chair

"You look," Don't be vulnerable "You look way better than on Thursday." H snickered and crossed his arms

"Oh thanks," She wilted

Realizing his mistake Min Ho made quick work to try to patch it over.

"Your contacts arrived so I'm going to teach you how to put them in."

"What?"

"Yeah these glasses," he got low to her face and pinched the wire frame by the side of her face. And as he was speaking, slid them off her face, "They're hiding some pretty nice bone structure. Ba-thump. oh fuck

"Well," She snatched her glasses back, "that's not gonna happen. contacts can cause some serious eye irritation and even some bacterial infections. I'm not risking my eyesight for looks."

"Somehow that sounds like irony." He provided a hand which she clasped onto. He pulled her out of the chair and started giving her the rundown of what he had been doing for the last seven hours.

"Alright, first I went back through your closet and got rid of everything ugly, stained, or outdated. But that only left you with like 3 outfits."

"Hey! Wait how'd you get back into my dorm?"

"Well, I knock on your door and then one of your roommates let me in on the condition that while I cleaned your closet I don't wear a shirt."

"Ugh, how could you be so narcissistic? I bet every time you caught your own reflection you made muscles at yourself."

"Not every time," She groaned once again "Now, I already had one of my stylist's assistants order you some basic essentials. We're going to find you some statement pieces. Something interesting, eye-catching." He noticed as he walked you around a vibrant shopping district that you hadn't let go of his hand.

There was more music and incredibly perfumed stores with ridiculously overpriced and unique clothing.

"let's go in this one," Min Ho tugged her into a very bright, multi-floor store. She just let herself get strung along. It was almost refreshing for her to let her brain turn off and have someone else take charge. Then she enjoyed having his dote on him. He had employees chase him around the 7-floor store grabbing everything he deemed worthy.

For the next two hours, Min Ho enjoyed playing dress up with a little dolly. And (Y/n) was just enjoying having someone fuss over every detail. Although it was exhausting to change into so many outfits just to hear Min Ho reject them or come up and readjust. They left that store with twenty very large bags and a whole new wardrobe.

By the time they got back up to (Y/n)'s dorm, there were red lines in their hands and the need for dinner. She put the bags down lining the side of her bed and then flopped onto the sheets. In the corner of her room, there were big black trash bags stuffed full. Min Ho also put the bags down, just in a less organized manner. He too jumped on the bed squishing (Y/n) between the mattress.

She squealed in response and rolled maniacally to get him off her. They were both smiling and laughing when (Y/n)'s roommate walked in and cleared her throat. (Y/n) jumped off Min Ho like he had burned her or like they were north-north poles.

They are still entirely themselves; they are now just a Chinese, Japanese, or Cambodian version of themselves.

At the same time, a set of profound post-hypnotic suggestions is implanted to ensure the client remains calm and accepting on seeing their new self.

After this, the last part of the transformation takes place, and the client is given a complete makeover from head to foot and returned to the main salon for the big reveal.

Drama and excitement then ensue, but soon all is calm and good, and Alice Meadows is Ai Li Mei Dao (Chinese), or Arisu Miedozaki (Japanese), or Aliza Masidlawin (Filipino), or Aeri Meojuri (Korean), or Cambodian, or Laotian, or Indian, or Samoan, or Vietnamese, or Thai, or who knows which? Whatever the case, she is off to a new life, and what a life it is, all with a new identity and once our people are done, even a better job and place to live.

It can be defined as “hypervisibility, coalescing over-the-top emotions with behavioral transgressions that promise the thrill of unpredictability” (Kavka 2019). However, the question of authenticity lingers: is reality TV truly "real," or is it carefully crafted with the help of scripts, editing, and producer manipulation? While the answer isn't always clear-cut, exploring the editing techniques and potential scripting employed in these shows can shed light on the constructed nature of reality TV.

The Power of the Edit

Editing plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative of reality TV (C&I Studios 2023). Editing can turn boring footage into drama-filled episodes. Producers are like master chefs, chopping up hours of filming into bite-sized scenes, then rearranging things and adding dramatic music (South University Blog 2016). It's like they have a remote control for real life, rewinding and fast-forwarding to create fake fights, exaggerate personalities, and cook up storylines that wouldn't be in the real world. Remember that contestant you loved to hate? They might have just been edited to look like a villain, thanks to some clever cutting and pasting.

This editing trickery can have real consequences. People watching might start thinking everyone acts like that, leading to unrealistic expectations and unhealthy comparisons. It's like judging a book by its most dramatic chapter, completely missing the rest of the story. This selective editing can create artificial conflict, exaggerate personalities, and fabricate storylines that don't accurately reflect reality. For instance, Mnet, the Korean TV station known for launching K-pop idols, has become a hot topic for all the wrong reasons (Turner, 2023). Their reality shows meant to turn young hopefuls into stars face accusations of "evil editing." Basically, they're using editing tricks to paint certain contestants in a bad position, creating drama and controversy for viewers.

However, it's not the first time fans have been pointing out questionable editing choices for years; this time, things are blowing up (VCCorp.vn 2019). Contestants get hate online, careers are potentially affected, and viewers question everything they see.

Blurring the Lines: Scripting and Prompts

While completed scripts are rare, reality shows often use "storytelling tools" like producer prompts and leading questions (LinkedIn Film Production n.d.). These interventions can lead participants to specific reactions, guide conversations in a desired direction, and even plant seeds for future storylines. While not outright scripted, these subtle interventions manipulate the flow of events, subtly pushing the participants towards narratives pre-determined by the producers.

Anna Klassen was known for participating in a reality show about makeover transformation. Before her big reveal as a "beautiful and attractive person," producers resorted to some low tactics. They used a cameraman's waxed leg hair (brown hair) to pretend it was her leg hair! When she, understandably confused, pointed out her hair is blonde, not brown, they laughed it off, dismissing it as nothing. The charade exposed the ugly truth for this contestant: “Reality TV is anything but real” (Klassen 2014). It's a carefully crafted narrative where props, manipulation, and forced interactions paint a fictional picture far from the genuine human experience.

However, the ethical implications of these manipulation techniques are complex. While some argue they are necessary to create engaging television, others criticize them for distorting reality and exploiting participants. The line between harmless entertainment and manipulative fabrication can be blurry, raising questions about the producers' responsibility and the participants' informed consent (Mast 2016a).

Conclusion

It's important to acknowledge that not all reality TV is entirely fabricated. Many shows capture genuine moments of human interaction, emotion, and vulnerability. However, the manipulation techniques create a curated version of reality, blurring the lines between genuine behavior and manufactured drama (Mast 2016b). While definitively stating "reality TV is scripted" is an oversimplification, the manipulation of editing, producer interventions, and manufactured drama significantly impact the portrayal of events. Understanding these techniques allows viewers to approach reality TV with a critical eye. So, watch and enjoy, but remember: it's sometimes more accurate than it seems!

I really enjoyed the first two eps of Faceless Love. ( Granted I maybe slightly biased since I was in love with the Korean Vers.) All I will say though come on GMM don't let me down.

Like, I even got over the actor change very quickly. It was not due to any hate. I actually have enjoyed quite a few Luke drama's honestly pretty much most he has been in. I was just slightly attached to the other actor that was shown in the mock trailer and excited to see him in the role. But, anyways I'm enjoying Luke thus far (I don't know if I'm the only person that feels this way) but Luke really fits the business man vibe and I also feel like his is starting to come into and grown as an actor.

Also on another note Dew is so cute. I'm glad to see him in a lead role. cause I instantly loved him in F4 and wished he had a bigger role in the series. He just has that boy next door charm about him. So, far I'm loving it.

From the Korean Beauty Space

Nothing could be further from my daily concerns than the ups and downs of the cosmetics industry. But I was intrigued by a BBC podcast about the success of Korean cosmetics, more specifically skin moisturizer. It is part of a phenomenon known as K-beauty, which itself is part of the craze for everything Korean. K-pop, K-idols, K-drama, etc.

Verbal inflation is to be expected in this kind of business, especially as it is web-based and targeted at teenagers. Even so, I was struck by the borrowed terminology used to sell what is, in essence, a simple enough product to make (although that is obviously beside the point).

The first words I noticed were philosophy and culture, as in: a life-long philosophy of skin moisturizing (in South-Korea) and the culture of overall wellness.

From here, the lingo cascades in predictable fashion to holistic skincare enabled by incredible products, unique formulas and innovative technologies.

The hype gets a little more specific with hot-button words which are then injected into the spin, especially those meant for niche markets: locally sourced, vegan ingredients, gender-inclusive brands (hello boys!), anti-ageing properties, etc.

Next, influencers come on board with the right juvenile look and mannerisms. They churn out youTube tutorials, explore brand experiences and product reviews from the Korean beauty space. Sales are driven by virtual makeovers in the metaverse (price displayed at the bottom of the screen). Eventually online orders are placed with pop-up stores, possibly including matching purchases for avatars.

I suppose all of this looks like standard practice if you are 13 years old. Back in Korea, the actual manufacturers of cosmetics can turn on a dime as soon as a new trends 'arise', reformulating, rebranding or repackaging products as required.

Although South Korea is one of the most rapidly ageing societies in the world, it has managed to ride a wave of youth culture and cash in. The country has lifted itself out of Asian cultural obscurity, resonating with many young consumers elsewhere. I do not claim to understand how this was done, but the vocabulary of skin moisturizer shines some light on the underlying business logic of exploitation. The virtual marketplace is put to use to reinvent old products and sell them to new consumers.

The old is new again, over and over again. And billions roll in. In South-Korea.

I Wanna Make it Pop, Pop, Pop!

Hi, this is Deya!

A first year student of RepubLikha from Bachelor of Design of Miriam College. Let me introduce you to my last requirement!

For the fourth and last activity in Design History (AAV-104) class under Mr. Rino Datuin, it is a continuation of the third activity, the Pop Art Desk Lamp from the product innovation module.

We were tasked to design our personal space and match it with the lamp we made.

The Rise of Pop Culture

Pop culture is a product of art, literature, music, film, dance, television shows, radio and many more. It is a famous type of media that is appealing and consumed by most individuals in society. There are a lot of divisions under the pop culture but a famous example of this is Hallyu (Korean Wave), the popularity of South Korean culture and media such as K-pop and K-dramas.

Before jumping into the design and process of my makeover, Mr. Rino introduced us the 6 facets of design (FAMMME) to describe our design process and acknowledge the issues that we had in our initial concept. Here is what I came up (reminder that the target user in mind is myself as instructed):

As you can see from before, it was plain and boring. I haven't had the time to decorate my space due to being busy (and procrastinating 🥲) So for this activity, I took the chance to decorate it the way i initially want my space to look like.

and TADA! here is my space after the makeover 😌 It is still simple but I finally added color to my blank wall. I put up the posters I kept for such a long time to compliment my Pop Art Desk Lamp that is bright in nature.

The posters that you can see are from my K-pop albums, personal photos and posters that I bought from a variety store online. I initially wanted to put up my own graphic design posters however, our printer was out of ink so I might add it next time instead.
