Kaito probably had no idea what he had just agreed to. Kokichi simply nodded pleasantly and finally turned away.
“Mmkay. I'm gonna lie my way outta here, then. I know I feel better! I'll see you when you get out.” Kokichi turned on his heel and slipped out out of Kaito's hopital room, smiled his way past doctors and nurses, and went back to his own. Later, he insisted he no longer felt anything negative or harmful. He had no idea if he actually had been feeling so before, or if he was actually better, but the lies came out easily enough. And it convinced them, or at least they wanted him out of one of their beds enough that it worked.
He waited, told the headmaster that he and Kaito simply had been messing around and it got out of control. It was too early to reveal how incapable he was of controlling his talent. Unlike Kaito's, Kokichi's talent and potential were reliant on the biggest lie he'd ever told himself.
Despite giving up that lie internally, it was incredibly easy to slip back into his old habits. The most honest story he told their worried classmates came first, that they'd gotten into a fight. Then it was that Kokichi had saved Kaito from killing himself, a story so rediculous Maki slapped him across the face for it. They were jealous lovers in one story, Kaito was mugged and Kokichi saved him, no, Kokichi was almost mugged and Kaito got in the way, no, Gundam from the 77th class and Kokichi were summoning demons and Kaito got in the middle of their rites- pretty much everyone zoned him out by that point.
And every day after class- or every day he could without catching Maki or Shuichi's attention- Kokichi broke into Kaito's room. The first few days he spent time cleaning up the mess he'd left. After that, he just boredly laid on Kaito's bed, eventually got to reading all the Astronaut's manga, and then his books. When Kaito got back, as Kokichi had planned, he was already there waiting.
“Hey! They let you out! Are you better?” It was a pointless question, mostly to avoid Kaito asking why he was in his room.

“What, why can’t I talk about you like I know you?” He probably would have cackled here before. “You did the same thing to me. Even if you believe it right now, you might as well be looking in a mirror.”
“It’s disgusting. Do you really want to die lying to yourself?” He thought of a different tactic to prod at the reflection. “You think Shuichi is your sidekick, right? And you believe in him? Well, I’m pretty sure he hates lies- for whatever reason- so he would be pretty disappointed if you decided to do that.” He sighed irritably. Kokichi felt himself getting more and more frustrated the more bratty Kaito acted. It was too close.
“You can’t just pretend this didn’t happen. If you won’t join my organization, then why don’t you skip school for one day to hang out with us..? Hey, agree to that, and I won’t bug you anymore.” He wouldn’t have a need to, but there was no reason Kokichi had to say that.
Despite all his denseness, Kaito could tell when people were being sincere. He knew Kokichi was being honest from the moment he walked in. The issue is he didn’t want to admit it. Especially now that he was being told how similar they were. And the scary thing was how sincere that was too.
Kaito was confused and upset by the fact that after acting so much like the hero, he still ended up betrayed. (Was calling it a betrayal giving himself too much credit? Probably, but he wasn’t willing to fully admit that either.) But the more he thought about the way he mocked Kokichi the first time he showed any sincerity, kicked him down while he was sobbing, smeared blood in his face…
It wasn’t unjustified per say, but it was far from heroic.
“I just… I think… I-I…”Â
Kaito really had no idea what he even wanted to say, let alone what he could even manage to get out with the pressure in his chest making him feel like he was going to cry. It was such an awful feeling, especially knowing that if he did actually cry it’d be in front of Kokichi.
“Yeah. Fine. I’ll do it. I don’t really feel like going back to class right away anyways…”
