Eden Garden and the Haads

I cut my time short in Pai as I wanted to meet some friends at a beach in Koh Phanang. For some travellers, Koh Phanang is all about getting shitfaced and party party party at the Full Moon. In contrast, for some travellers it’s all about the healing workshops, meditation and yoga.

For me, I make a beeline directly for a small group of bays (Haads), a little cut off from the main areas of Koh Phanang. I’ve stayed on these beaches a few times in the past, always drawn to the community it creates. Here, there are regular travellers who stay here months at a time. They come back year after year and here, they form the strong bonds. This is why I always come here - the social atmosphere is beautiful. Most places you would see travellers come and go in a matter of days, where as here people have those weeks or months to really connect.

I stayed at Eden Garden, known for their banging weekly parties and yet during the week, there was a homely feeling. Roosters wandered around the common area, kids would run and play during the day and often you would see people falling asleep in hammocks rather than their beds at night. I had a bungalow up the hill - simple and cheap. The amenities were not what made Eden Garden fantastic, it was the mutual love you felt from the people you were with every day.

Full Moon Festivities

The Full Moon party began many moons ago when a small group of backpackers decided to celebrate one of their birthdays on the beaches of a Thai island called Koh Phanang. They had a couple drinks and danced on the beach under the bright light of the full moon until the wee hours of the morning. The next year, they decided to recreate this beach festivity, inviting more friends to join them on this island. And so the Full Moon party was born.

Today, approximately 30,000 people from every corner of the world storm this small island to paint themselves in day glow, rock neon clothing, and dance to the beats of DJs from all over the world.

And dance all night we did! Pictured are some of the stages from the jungle party (the party the night before the full moon party) and hitting the beach with some of our new friends from around the world!
