Excuse me while I basically make Azure Throne into a hakukai fanfic.
This got... really long, and veered off from what I intended for it several times, but is basically at heart as I said, a look at Azure Throne through the lens of "what if we work on the assumption that Hakuba knew it was Kaito from the start, and/or they're actually outright flirting."
Tumblr media
Hakuba: Kuroba what are you doing here. Why aren't you even in a disguise- oh, I see. This is interesting.
Kaito: Oh god it's Hakuba he's going to see through me like I'm made of cellophane or something. Please don't call me out here. I am pretending not to know you. Shush. PLAY ALONG.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaito: Come on please let one of my detectives have SOME faith in me. Restore my faith in humanity. Take the fucking bait, Hakuba.
Hakuba: Oh, that's. That's... I see what's going on here. That does complicate matters. All right, fine. I'll play along. Because I want to find the truth more than I want you arrested.
Hakuba: [Merely pays more attention to the actual suspects]
Kaito: [internally shouting "THANK YOU."]
Hakuba: We need to know exactly where everyone is, what they were doing, and if you'll excuse me I am going to geek out over science now-
Kaito: Okay well watch me explain in detail how Kaitou Kid (who is Not Me, by the way, in case you needed to be reminded) got in here. And let's conveniently not bring up how no one knows how Shinichi got here and Kid left.
Tumblr media
Hakuba: Oh, and I anticipated your entire trick.
Tumblr media
Hakuba: Because I know exactly how you work and I also know exactly what your clothes are made of.
Kaito: Wow... you're creepy, you know that? This is why I try and send you off on a wild dove chase each time you're heading to one of my heists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hakuba: Isn't it funny how I planned to catch Kaitou Kid that way, and instead I caught you two. I'm sure there's absolutely no connection between either of you and Kid... is there? Kaito?
Kaito: Oh but you know you can't say anything until this case is closed. I know you can't.
Tumblr media
Hakuba: This means you too, Kaito. I'll be needing your firsthand knowledge of the way things went, of course.
Tumblr media
Hakuba: It'll be good to have another actual detective on board for this!
Tumblr media
Honestly I can just leave this one be. Kaito is enough of a tsundere that "But, to think Hakuba came back... he should have just stayed and studied in London forever!" is accurate to what I think he'd be thinking right there.
It also matches with the several times (Dark Knight and Green Dragon especially) when he's personally redirected Hakuba away from the heist.
Plus, with his attachment issues (one parent he idolised is dead, the other is barely home), I think Kaito would have a very hard time dealing with Hakuba, who (like his mother) travels a lot, and is... barely there, really. :(
Tumblr media
Hakuba: Now, I wonder if you can keep up as a detective when playing one?
Kaito: Oh yeah? Watch me! Uh... I just need a pointer. That's all.
The interesting thing here is that Kaito has played at being a detective in the past. He's even played at being Mouri Kogoro right next to Hakuba here, in the Twilight Mansion case. However... in that case he wasn't needing to play a smart detective, and in any other instance he wasn't technically a "detective" (Magic Lovers Murder Case, where Katsuki Doito is a medical student) or he knows that Conan is capable of solving the mystery if he gives the right hints (Four Masterpieces, when he's being Takagi).
There's also the time when he played Hakuba himself in the movie Private Eye's Requiem, and we don't know how many times he'd have done that, that we haven't seen.
Point is, though, Hakuba doesn't know how good Kaito's observational skills are as a detective and it feels kind of like... if he knows (and I'm sure he has a gut feeling from the start even if he doesn't have evidence) he wants to know- "I can keep up with you, on your territory, but can you keep up with me, on mine?"
With that in mind, the fact that Kaito's only relaying what Shinichi's telling him must be... frustrating, for someone who'd actually be curious what Kaito can do, and I'm sure Hakuba would want to push Kaito to be able to figure things out for himself as well.
But I digress. Moving on.
Tumblr media
Hakuba: [Has just seen "Kudo" flirting and being sentimental with Ran, "his" girlfriend, in a way that Shinichi himself says is so spot-on its kinda pissing him off] Oi. Kaito. I thought you were interested in Aoko. Watch it. [Also kinda jealous himself.]
Tumblr media
I freakin' LOVE these two panels. This entire sense of "Yeah Hakuba's got Kaito sussed and he's already got half of what's going on with Conan, and yeah the next thing he does is question "Are you really Kudo Shinichi?" it's because of a potential flawed deduction when Shinichi's supposed to be this perfect saviour of the Japanese Police Force.
And in posing the question in such a way, he's allowing Kaito - master of disguise! - to come up with a cover story. Which, of course, he does.
But overall? It's the sense of... actually, just as I said. Hakuba's going "Shh. I'm talking to [him]! Don't interrupt us, okay?" - He's going "I know you're helping him, but I want to know his capabilities. Not yours."
Tumblr media
Kaito just calling his ass out like "Hakuba I know you're obsessed with me- I mean Kid- c'mon I know you better than that~"
Also the phrase "Rumoured to have his eyes light up at the mere mention of Kid" more like. Kaito you have seen that in person.
More like I look at it and I'm like, is this Kaito saying "I Know What You Are"?
Tumblr media
I know that it's not just them, but it's this nice little touch of the two of them standing next to each other, while Conan is on the other side of the group, and they're both mirroring the other's posture.
Tumblr media
Kaito's already thought to himself how he barely needs to change his voice, and it's easy to imagine him barely changing his behaviours but adjusting so that he's more serious and less playing the clown or showman.
In this case, he's fully paying attention to the case (just as he has in previous ones as a witness) and...
He and Hakuba are on the exact same wavelength, with Hakuba finishing Kaito's sentence here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again with the twinning. Kaito has a slightly more clueless look about him, I'd say, but that's because he is out of his depth. Other than that? He's just as much taking Hakuba's lead on the case as he is Shinichi's!
Tumblr media
The sheer amount of "Kuroba, your alibi is slipping!"
Hakuba's not going to outright cover for something that might be noticed as a flaw later on, nor is he outright going to call Kaito's disguise out immediately when other things are going on. He is, however, going to tease him to hell and back, push buttons, you name it.
And, of course, Hakuba in hearing Kaito's alibi and seeing Conan back it up, will also know that Conan is on Kid's side here even more than before.
Tumblr media
Small and simple observation: Kaito is behind Hakuba.
At this point Hakuba in canon and the Hakuba who knew from the moment he laid eyes on him both know that this is Kaito. It's Kaitou Kid.
The start of the case had the crime get pinned on Kid.
Yet - Hakuba's just fine with Kaito watching his back and/or fully capable of doing whatever he likes behind him, knowing full well that Kaito's a skilled magician who'd be able to hide his actions. The obvious point is that he trusts Kaito.
And then - we get to the Flirtening.
Tumblr media
I call it that because in canon it's bad enough, with Hakuba clearly only started making moves on Ran to make Kid slip up.
But in a world where he knows it's Kaito from the start? In Hakukai Fanfic Land?
First off- I'd say that this is actually payback.
Earlier on in the case, Hakuba saw Kaito (as Shinichi) flirting with Ran. Thinking back to the very first set of cases Hakuba ever appeared in, and... he'd walked into class for the first time and seen Kaito being mean to a girl, to Aoko, who was clearly hurting, and then tried to be nice to her by saying, basically, "If he won't take you to the concert you wanted to go to, I'll go with you."
Going on him knowing that this here is Kaito? He'd be seeing Kaito flirting with someone who isn't Aoko, and getting very in character, and... basically going "watch it."
So Saguru is a) defensive for Aoko, b) jealous because oi, why are you flirting with her, when he is right here, and c) using this as a means of poking a hole in Kaito's disguise, because sure he's more interested in the truth than he is in arresting Kaito, but that doesn't mean he's above making life hard for him.
In which case...
Tumblr media
Kaito going "What did you say, jerk!!" is just as much "oh shit yeah I'm supposed to be being Shinichi right now" as it is "Hakuba why are you flirting with someone else?"
The reaction would be delayed because a) Kaito knows Hakuba's not interested in Ran, or not interested in girls in general, and b) the sheer amount of "what the fuck is happening. what is going on in front of me here" he'd be feeling.
Because for one thing, Conan's down there making attack dog noises, and for another- d'you think Kaito would just reflexively fall back into poker face if he saw the guy he likes/who he knows is interested in him just easily flirting around? I think that ordinarily Kaito would just be like "eh, that's just Hakuba being Hakuba" but I'm also aware of how fragile Kaito's social connections and relationships often are, as well as the rift between logic and emotion.
After this we have a few different things happening at once.
We have Kaito not having asked which cheek Ran had kissed Shinichi on and gesturing to the wrong one, which Ran instantly notices:
Tumblr media
Note that the flashback isn't just for our benefit; we see later on that Ran realises probably in this moment that there's something Wrong with "Shinichi" because how could he forget which cheek she kissed him on?
This being relevant because right before that...
Tumblr media
He'd told Ran to not "space out" - but with the weirdness going on between him, Hakuba, and Conan, I wonder if it was actually Kaito who knew he was kind of spacing out here! Like, sure, Shinichi's sending Kaito lines, but in terms of narrative and themes...
And in canon, this is where Hakuba first notices the mike and earpiece that Kaito and Conan are using to communicate. Even in a version where he knew it was Kaito from the start, this would still be where Hakuba realises "Hey, what's UP with that kid?"
Tumblr media
Hakuba, in canon: Could it be... that those two...
My headcanon for that is that he was meaning to say "are working together," which is the easiest and most obvious/simple conclusion of his sentence.
Hakuba, in fanfic hc land: Hey, why are they working together? I know I didn't warn him I'd be here, but he could have been working with me. That kid already stole some of my reputation regarding going against you, and now this too?!
Tumblr media
Honestly, sometimes I remember the times when Kaito has shown himself able to figure out a trick or even a murder trick more or less on his own or at the same pace as Shinichi, and I see times like this when he's shown as needing a lot more help, and I feel frustrated that Kaito's seeming to be dumbed down a little to make Shinichi look better.
But then, I think about how there's multiple times over the course of not just Detective Conan but also Magic Kaito itself, where Kaito is uncomfortable around murders and dead bodies.
Which then starts to make sense of the times when he relies more on his detectives' wits for things like this; if it's a logic puzzle trick that he can treat as one, then he can keep up. If there's blood and bodies and Someone Died Here, which they did - someone died before his heist could even begin! - then his mind has a hard time, skittering around the unnerving parts and not being able to give the trick the attention it needs.
I'd imagine his thought process goes kind of like "Okay okay so if I could think of anything that'd be really useful (but a guy died a minute ago I was out there and doing normal things and a guy died) yeah but if you don't think smart now it's going to happen again or they won't get caught (oh god what if I can't do it) I have to but-" and... so on.
And back to point, but - Hakuba hasn't really seen Kaito in the direct aftermath of him having seen someone die, when Kaito isn't pretending to be someone else.
Technically, he still hasn't here, because Kaito is Being Shinichi.
Dark Knight had Hakuba arrive on scene late, as Kid was already leaving the scene, and in Twilight Mansion Kid was Mouri Kogoro, so even if his reactions were touched with reality, no one could tell what was Kid and what was Kogoro. Here, Hakuba wasn't the first on scene, and he only sees Kaito once Kaito's had a chance to put his poker face (and a Mask of Shinichi) on.
I'd even say that... this being Detective Conan, we've had a chance to see an entire character development arc between Shinichi and Kaito, even if it is still one-sided and not the healthiest of dynamics. We know that Shinichi's not really going to hand Kaito to the police on a silver platter.
But Hakuba? The irony is that in MK canon Hakuba is KNOWN for calling Kaito with helpful knowledge about his opponent (Golden Eye, infamously) and withholding information that would put suspicion onto Kaito's civilian identity (Midnight Crow, at least). And yet in this heist, because we're a) seeing things from Conan and Kaito's perspective here, and b) we haven't seen what Hakuba would do in this sort of situation before, he seems... more of a threat if he outright found them out than if it were just the police (who they can trick) or Hattori (who Shinichi would be able to shush).
Personally, I believe that Hakuba WOULD have worked with Kaito to come to all of the same conclusions that they came to in canon with Shinichi as the POV. Hakuba's a good enough detective, after all, as we even see him doing this in canon, drawing the same conclusions without Shinichi having to whisper in his ear once.
Tumblr media
Is Kaito side-eyeing Hakuba because he knows Hakuba's being a little shit over this but he can't say anything because he can't admit that he knows the guy personally as well as he does? Is Conan flailing because he feels like they've been sussed out?
Or is it more along the lines of "Oh, you think you're so smart, don't you? Soooo clever. Yeah sure, after you've been hounding me all case- but don't think I'll let you have the last laugh"?
And now, I'm thinking of Shinichi hearing some of the familiarity come out in their voices around now, if not before, and he's finally realising "Oh- okay so Kid knows this guy. Not just aware of him, he knows him. Oh. Oh shit."
Fun fact: we do not see Conan again alll the way through the explanation of the fireman's carry that Hakuba is doing with Kaito as his partner. The next time we see Conan, it's after they've pinned the criminal in place.
Tumblr media
I find this interesting because... in spite of this being a case that Hakuba is starring in - the guy who is well known for asking "Why did you do it?" - it's the victim's wife who asks that, by way of her "But why did you kill my husband!?" and it's Conan who suggests a potential reason.
In a sense, they've both stolen Hakuba's thunder here, the wife by taking his catchphrase and Conan for taking the words out of the criminals mouth before the guy can admit it himself, in his own words.
(Ironically, Kaito would agree with Conan on this, probably, what with him having said "isn't it your job to figure [motive] out?" but as I've said before, I see worth in Hakuba asking for it in the criminals' own words.)
I feel like both I and other people have probably made all the jokes about the "I've got the stamina to keep carrying you for ages" part that I don't need to rehash it that much, haha.
But I DO have other observations.
Tumblr media
Kaito: So, you figured it out, huh... Hakuba: Of course!
Like... even way aside from the fact that Hakuba's probably just internally going "you're SO lucky I like you, otherwise I'd have just pointed out that you just flattened your hair the moment I walked in" there's something this reminded me of.
In the translation here, Kaito trails off on an ellipsis, but... in a way, that's a question. It's literally "So, you figured me out?" except Kaito may well have been expecting it even in canon, so it's no longer a question.
What's the significance of this?
Well.
Tumblr media
It brings to mind how Toichi asked "Will you be able to stop me?" and Yusaku said "[Yeah...] of course!"
And of course we know that whatever Yusaku was able to do, it was never enough to stop the legend of Kaitou Kid from growing - and we also now know that he almost certainly knew that it was his brother Toichi right from the start.
In many ways it's meant to show how Kaito and Shinichi have taken up their fathers' mantles and become each other's rival... but this moment of "You found me out?" "Yeah, of course!" shows that Hakuba is just as much Kaitou Kid's worthy rival. He is thematically and narratively Kid's rival.
(And this is where I get my post limit for images, whoops!)
So, yeah. Kaito then has a space of about three [3] panels between Hakuba saying "I know you're Kid" and then Hakuba trying to walk and finding his legs are cuffed together.
I'd also say that in terms of pranks that Kaito (as Kid) has played in order to get out of a Situation, that was... a lot more on the immature roughhousing side than a lot of what he does. So much of his DC appearances relies on... action movie stunts? Stuff that's actually really risky? Because he needs to rely on that. But with Hakuba he doesn't have to. It reads more like play fighting.
(Because Hakuba, he knows, isn't going to attack him with a deadly soccer ball or knock him out midair.)
A thought on why he cuffed Hakuba's legs together like he did even if they're on better terms would also be the easy "Kaito knows that Nakamori is there, knows that Hakuba wouldn't be allowed to carry him all the way to the station, knows that something would go wrong, and almost certainly by this point knows that he shouldn't go out in public as Shinichi. So he's just as much going "yeah nope, not doing that, bad idea on SO many levels" as he is "I don't fancy going to jail today."
And, for an ending note: Hakuba at no point seems frustrated or upset that Kaito got away. Not for one single moment.
If anything, I'd say he's just going "Ah, there he goes again. Look at him go." with a fond look in his eye.

Could you tell me what's your opinion about kogoro, like you always appear like you hate kogoro that's why I wanted to know (whenever you mention him you tell that unbothered fuckin father) wanna know your opinion please answer my ask
fun question!
I LOVE KOGORO
with that being said, i have a very nuanced opinion on him
do i think he's a good detective, husband or father? NO, absolutely not. i don't even think he's a good guardian in regards to conan lol
kogoro can be very self-absorbed, impatient and superficial. his alcoholism and gambling addiction strain every aspect of his life, but kogoro doesn't seem to care enough to change
a few examples:
chapter 1
Tumblr media
chapter 370
Tumblr media
LIKE??? SHE HAS TO STUDY FOR HER MOCK EXAMS AND KOGORO CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO GIVE A FUCK LOL
initially, i blamed his attitude on his lack of success as a detective. but he shows signs of being irresponsible in his youth as well, despite working for the police:
chapter 572
Tumblr media
even after shinichi saves kogoro's career and introduces him to a lot of fame, kogoro shows no willingness to change. he's chronically self-indulgent:
chapter 853
Tumblr media
on top of that, the rare times that ran asks him to do something for her, he acts like it's a complete burden:
chapter 528
ran asks him to watch eri's cat while she's in school and kogoro tries to pass the responsibility on to conan
Tumblr media
speaking of conan, kogoro repeatedly gets violent with him when he's investigating alongside him
chapter 12
Tumblr media
the reason why it appears like i hate him is because my posts are mainly about shinran and interestingly enough, gosho decided to write kogoro as shinichi's polar opposite in a lot of ways. which he even admits in his own writing:
chapter 163
Tumblr media
it's evidently a writing choice that gosho decided to go for on purpose. and i think that's fucking brilliant. think about it: ran growing up with an irresponsible, unreliable dad who often prioritizes drinking and gambling over his own daughter? and that same girl falling in love with a guy who's incredibly dependable, attentive, selfless and everything her father is not? IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
so whenever i analyze certain shinran moments, it becomes glaringly obvious to me that shinichi often acts like an anti-kogoro, so to speak.
examples i already mentioned in my acts of service post: kogoro refusing to help ran - shinichi stepping up as a result in chapter 457 and 716.
additional examples:
chapter 192
kogoro drops off ran at this weird, isolated mansion for a meeting that sonoko arranged with a bunch of strangers online and he feels off about the whole thing and i'm like YES LOVE THAT, SHOWING GREAT PARENTAL INSTINCTS
Tumblr media
he even warns one of the guys and i'm like YEAH YOU'RE BEING A GOOD DAD, LETS GO KOGORO
Tumblr media
naturally, shinichi feels weird about the situation as well, so he insists on staying with his girl, even though it's already been discussed that he's too sick:
Tumblr media
so, despite the fact that a) kogoro feels like something is odd about the meeting, b) he warns the guy to leave ran tf alone... HE STILL LEAVES HER AT THE MANSION UNPROTECTED
Tumblr media
and i'm like... WHY????? and gosho immediately answers my question:
Tumblr media
LIKE????????????????????? talk about bad parenting lol
anyway, turns out something about the meeting was indeed off and ran is potentially in danger. both shin and kogoro lose their shit:
Tumblr media
but there's a key difference between kogoro and shinichi and i feel like gosho wrote this difference on purpose - nothing, and i mean absolutely NOTHING will ever stop shinichi from trying to keep ran safe:
Tumblr media
ONE MORE EXAMPLE
chapter 347-349
the case barely even begins and shinichi immediately observes that ran isn't feeling well:
Tumblr media
he even tries to convince her to ditch dinner and go back home:
Tumblr media
when shit starts hitting the fan and ran is getting incredibly dizzy, kogoro doesn't even notice:
Tumblr media
again, maybe i'm reading too much into it, but i think the fact that gosho depicts kogoro's ignorance in this situation is 100% by design and as a result shinichi gets to be the anti-kogoro again:
Tumblr media
throughout the whole case shinichi worries about ran and tries to take care of her. which is very impressive considering that ran constantly tries to downplay her symptoms:
Tumblr media
examples like this occur way too often for me to write them off as a coincidence. we're clearly dealing with a pattern. how could i not point that out in my analysis? especially when shinichi's unwavering loyalty towards ran is something that she gushes about constantly?
with all that being said, just because i regurarly point out kogoro's flaws as a dad, doesn't mean i hate him. it's just that i aim to reach a full, comprehensive conclusion with every analysis i write and that entails important details like the glaring differences between shinichi and kogoro regarding their treatment of ran.
i still adore kogoro. cause like i said, there's nuance. i feel like there's a lot of hidden depth behind kogoro's character that i wish gosho explored more:
he's smarter than people think
chapter 11
HE'S THE FIRST PERSON TO QUESTION CONAN'S REAL IDENTITY, EVEN BEFORE RAN:
Tumblr media
chapter 165
to everyone's suprise, kogoro deducts that eri lost her wedding ring and he goes out of his way to find it for her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are more examples of him showing decent detective skills during certain cases but this post is already long enough lol so i'm not getting into that
he can be very idealistic
chapter 86
him holding an old and dear friend accountable for murdering someone:
Tumblr media
chapter 376
him doing the same again with a childhood friend:
Tumblr media
HE HAS HIS MOMENTS, OKAY?!
chapter 266
I LOVE IT when kogoro shows his vulnerable side, i find it so heartwarming:
Tumblr media
chapter 986
OR HIS BADASS SIDE (this is him protecting eri from a guy who's about to sexually assault her)
Tumblr media
WHAT A KING
and even though i shit on his parenting a lot he can be very endearing at times! examples:
chapter 207
his reaction to ran dreaming about the one time that shinichi asked her to give him her bra (it was for a case lol)
Tumblr media
chapter 254
MY FAVORITE KOGORO MOMENT:
Tumblr media
it's a small but incredibly touching gesture and i love him so much for moments like this
chapter 255
Tumblr media
HE CAN BE SO SUPPORTIVE AND SWEET
chapter 765
even though i criticized him for his treatment of conan earlier, shinichi and kogoro have their moments as well. the ramen case is one of my favorite moments between them, it's just so wholesome!
Tumblr media
this case is giving dad and son-in-law eneregy!
to sum up my very long response: kogoro is an overall shitty person but he can be very smart, idealistic and sweet and i wish gosho explored those aspects of his character more, cause i feel like he gets sidelined a lot. he often uses kogoro for comedic relief which is fair to a certain extent cause kogoro is HILARIOUS and makes me laugh all the time but gosho keeps giving the bigger and more meaningful plotlines to characters that I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT (looking at you amuro) and i think that's a fucking shame cause kogoro has a lot of potential
hope that answers your question! :)

I'm already missing the fillers T-T I mean the canon is Kogoro saying he was glad he didn't have to look after a sick kid. This man is a father and has been resposible for raising this child for a while now, show some goddamn concern.
AND WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT. SHINICHI'S DUMB DECISION HAS COME BACK TO BITE HIM ON THE ASS.
Gosho: If I have the school trip have consequences, the audience won't find it a stupid decision right? And be happy that it's moving the plot forward?
The audience: No. We still think you're stupid.
Shinichi, you shouldn't be so happy that you're so good at tricking your "girlfriend". The one you're supposed to love and trust. I can't believe you're actually dating her while you're lying to her face. You have absolutely no respect for her and I find it gross how everyone supports your relationship when they shouldn't.
Ai, I'm sorry, but you have no right to panic. You let this happen.
Shinichi deserves to panic for being stupid.
Hell, the whole school knows your "alive" and that your "dating" Ran too, so you're just putting her in more and more danger. All it takes is for someone to ask and the beans to be spilled and she's going to be taken captive so they can find the truth and then killed. How weird, when you said lying to her is just to protect her when this is doing the opposite. If you really wanted to protect her, you'd actually fake your death.
Are we also dealing with an insane stalker for the Kudo family. Why is he surprised. They're all celebrities, of course they have insane fans.
I would say it's ooc for Ai to not be as focused on the fact that their secret is in danger but Shinichi deserves to be the one suffering for his mistakes too.
...Shinichi, you literally listened to the conversation Kazuha had with Heiji where she said she could see you on TV.
Heiji, you can't call him a moron when YOU HELPED HIM WITH THE PLAN.
This plot is so stupid T-T Someone help me. How is Gosho so dumb? Does he not have editors? Are his editors stupid too? I assume they are.
And now the school is being surrounded. Just because Ran won't say anything if Shinichi asks because she's a pushover, that doesn't mean the others won't. They don't know the danger Shinichi is in so why would they? Just because he asks? Since when do teenagers do as they ask.
I can't even find Ai's annoyance at Shinichi funny, because this is a serious situation that isn't being treated as such by them. Ai should, frankly, be terrified.
...Shinichi could be onto something here. I mean, have you seen all the lookalikes he has. And now his father does have a brother (though they actually don't look alike funnily enough).
So Shinichi makes jokes to not panic. This is the only interesting part of these episodes.
Shinichi, you should be terrified a man without an eye who could be Rum is investigating you.
How suprising. Yuusaku and Yukiko are actually doing something for their son. At least they're doing something instead of panicking, but not appropriately for their situation.
...You know she could have just said she lied? Or had bad sources who lied to her if she wanted to keep her credibility? Using her saying it was an hallucination is just insulting.
And of course a girl who has been gaslit by Shinichi so much would actually DOUBT he was there herself. That isn't cute. That is actually horrifying that Shinichi has made her doubt herself so much that she questioned it herself.
Fuck. Ran deserves so much better.
The fact that Shinichi didn't even think to contact his parents for help also speaks volumes how little he actually relies on them or thinks he can.
It's too late to parent him, Yukiko.
I'm putting them solving the code to Akai. Yuusaku didn't need to be in the discussion at all about them figuring out the boss' name.
What writing does Gosho think this is? Oh now Yuusaku and Yukiko care enough about their son to help and he's brought him the name of the boss out of nowhere when Shinichi and Akai could have just discussed it instead.
His writing is so bad T-T Someone save his plot for me.

you two... TOO!?
I did this with the children but what about the parents? after seeing some of the great art of @cartoonsbyandie I said "shit, this would be so much fun with the adults" anyway, this is one of my favorite headcanons, could someone share some more?
--------------------------------------------- Imagine this: Kogoro and Ginzo are dating but they don't want anyone in their social circle to find out for fear of being judged. one day kogoro manages to convince ginzo to go out for a drink, not realizing that they went to one of the most well-known and extravagant gay bars in the area.
they start to get used to the environment, they feel free and happy to be in a place where they can openly show love to each other, then kogoro goes to the bathroom for a moment and when he comes back he bumps into a familiar face "ouch, hey! watch where you're walking idio-" his mind stops for a moment, the music is playing very loud for some reason "k-kudo!?" the man looks at him confused [internally terrified] "pardon?" Kogoro is in shock when Ginzo approaches him and grabs his shoulder "Mouri! Damn I've been looking for you, where the fuck you-"
sepulchral silence takes over the place for a moment.
"T-TOICHI!?" kogoro is confused, while the two men are pale, a whisper is audible. shit. "Um, keibu, it's uh- a big surprise to see you here…how's aoko-chan?" ok, kogoro is VERY confused right now "do you guys know each other!?" nakamori covers his face in shame "fuck…" "is that a yes?" "YES THE FUCK, YES" toichi smiles too nervous internally "so, mission on deck or-" the detectives are paralyzed, they think they have an excuse "YES! MOURI AND I WERE-" toichi laughs loudly
"There's no need guys, in fact we're also here for that reason" the detectives look at each other "we?" they say at same time. while they are talking someone approaches toichi from behind and hugs him around the waist "I go away just for a minute and you start flirting? how rud-" yuusaku freezes in place, his smile disappears and his face pales, kogoro's too.
------------------------------------------
This is how the 4 parents are sitting at a table, with different drinks and in an uncomfortable silence. "So, you're Yuki-chan's childhood friend?" toichi speaks calmly, calm after the initial shock "yes-yes, and you are?" the inspector interrupts "he is toichi, my neighbor. can I ask for your companion?" kogoro looks at yuusaku who is still holding his head "yuu-chan? I thought mouri-san would have told you about him, his son plays with mouri's daughter" the inspector thinks and remembers vague complaints from kogoro about a brat playing with his daughter.
the rest of the night was relatively good, they even drank together, although when they left the two couples went their separate ways. "so, they are also… I see why he used to ask me to take care of kaito so often" it all made sense now, he could dismiss the suspicion of being KID "I never imagined he was like this, yukiko even knows about this?" kogoro was still digesting the topic "probably, toichi said that chikage knew and was fine with it, maybe kudo's wife too"
------------------------------------------
on the other hand… "I'm fucked up" yusaku was in a fetal position in the back of the car "something wrong darling? no problem dear, they're not going to judge us" toichi was driving, he had a better alcohol tolerance than the detective "not that, yukiko is going to kill me, I promised to take care of shinichi while she accompanied chikage to paris, mouri will definitely tell her."

I'VE BEEN SAYING
Kaito's mom literally dressed up as her dead husband to "test" him so I kind of assumed that everyone thought of her and Toichi as maybe the worst parents in the series. Which is a pretty high bar! They have crossed it with emotional and physical abuse, and on Chikage's part, neglect. But for comparison:
Even if you think Hattori's dad punching him was a one time thing, and riling him up so he'll throw himself into danger was just the two times on screen - kinda messed up, no? Heizou also puts him down in front of strangers and the other police more than once. Shizuka is shown gently scolding Heizou for those shenanigans, so maybe she's trying within the limits of what she thinks she's allowed to do, or maybe she doesn't think it's that big a deal. The first one makes more sense to me personally, because in my own dealings with Very Traditional families, there does tend to be one person who decides everything for everyone and it can be dangerous or just counterproductive to "rock the boat." Then again, in one of the movies, we find out that she didn't visit him in the hospital after he got shot, so 0_0 Either way, they're not doing great.
According to a psychiatrist I had a riveting conversation with, neglect is like the number 1 way to fuck up your kid. The Kudos left Shinichi alone at a pretty young age. Especially since he doesn't seem to have a real support network - he has Agasa and Ran and maybe Sonoko, although he seems to get along well on a surface level with his classmates - this seems like a grade A bad idea. And now they're so removed from him that they can't have a normal conversation with him to find out how he's doing because they know he'll lie and say he's fine. And instead of finding a way to fix this, they literally go spy mode on him. Also he fakes his death for them and they act like it's just a silly prank? They seem to care and realize they've messed up, but they're not exactly making strides towards fixing it.
Ran's parents are divorced, and Kogoro really needs a therapist and a life coach and generally to just not depend on his daughter for everything. And possibly his wife? I'm not sure who was paying the rent before Conan showed up. Eri said she tried to convince Ran to live with her instead, but Ran wouldn't have it, which is probably because Eri modeled putting up with Kogoro endlessly up to the point that they were separated. I also get the sense that things were settled before Kogoro completely spiraled. It's cool that she wants to respect her daughter's wishes and stuff. Parenting is hard and it seems like she's at least trying her best and thinking of Ran's feelings. Kogoro just seems like he's got too much depression to be the parent he wants to be. Still not great, but at least there's effort?
Sonoko's parents think they should get to control her life, and she doesn't seem to get on with them very well. Not the best, but at least they're not like, actively abusive?
Ginzo would appear to be a single father for reasons unknown to me. He should spend more time with his daughter but he's all wrapped up in work all the time, so Aoko is also neglected. She and Shinichi could probably relate to each other a lot, or at least more than you'd think. He does cook her dinner sometimes and is still more present in her life than the Kudos are in Shinichi's, and he does at least make effort to keep her out of danger.
I'd go on but we only see one of Kazuha's parents and I can't think of anyone else who's mentioned specifically enough? and we don't really see Kazuha's dad interacting with her specifically. We also don't see evidence that he's a completely absent father, so who knows.
idk in conclusion:
Tumblr media
and here's the link to the tiermaker i made if you're interested
I think we all know that Toichi isn't such a great father, right? Sticks his nose where he shouldn't, teaches his son the worst way to deal with his feelings (making him always isolate himself and deal with everything alone) then he dies, indirectly puts his son's life at risk all the time and fuck Kaito.
Kaito has a very noble reason for being the Kaitou Kid and then he finds out that his father was the KID because he wanted to impress a thief LOL
And Kaito's mother is almost never with him, always traveling. In addition, indirectly, she was responsible for making her son have to deal with a crazy woman who keeps using his fear to hurt him.

Movie 12! Time for the middle finger at Gosho's decision to try and make Shinichi tone deaf movie! Although he recently realized doing so would mean Shinichi couldn't understand the sound of the phone call so he once again changed his mind. We love a consistent writer.
And it starts off with a bang! Literally!
Shinichi and Ai showing us they have the superior relationship in the series in the introduction, as always.
And of course its followed by the lackluster relationship between him and Ran.
Ran: Do you want to come?
Shinichi: Sorry Ran, I can't go.
Ran: But maybe you can! (and keeps asking when Shinichi informs her again that he genuinely can't)
Shinichi finally: I just told you I can't so please stop meddling in my affairs.
Ran: Oh I'm just a meddling karate idiot am I (he didn't say that), well I'll insult you in turn and then hang up on you.
Such a great and romantic relationship guys! It's not even playful teasing, it's Ran pulling a hissy fit because Shinichi isn't doing what she wants him to do and got upset when he got a bit annoyed she wouldn't take no for an answer.
This is one of my favourite movies just because of the music.
Reiko has no chill. Poor Agasa, he puts effort into those quiz. Though Shinichi also finds them stupid so he can't win anywhere.
I love the Detective Boys, they went to a celebrity singer and asked for her help and somehow got it XD
LMAO Shinichi quickly trying to get in Ai's good books after he told her she was a bit stuck-up like Reiko by telling her he meant she was a pretty as her.
Oh my god Ran, he just told you he couldn't join you and to stop asking him when the answer wouldn't change, there's no reason to take your anger out on Sonoko for it.
Why are they calling it a fight?! It wasn't a fight, Ran was behaving like a brat because she didn't get her way. Don't blame Shinichi for this. He usually is the ass to Ran but this time the fault is all on her. God they really can't resist making their relationship god fucking awful even in movies.
I need them to understand what tone deaf means. You can't have perfect pitch and be tone deaf because being tone deaf means you can't tell the differences in pitch and Shinichi can. He just can't sing, there is a difference.
Genta deserved to be poisoned, really. He's lucky that it wasn't deadly in nature.
Reiko, if you're planning to talk to Genta's parents about how they raised him, she should do the same for all the DCMK parents. Give them the verbal whiplashing they deserve.
I love murder happening as classical music plays. So fancy.
Awww poor Takagi, he got intimidated by Reiko.
Once again I repeat myself, the people don't have to have a link to Shinichi (or Ran) in order for him to want to protect them. This is a boy who will save murderers and serial killers because he views life as precious and I hate when the act like he would need a reason beyond that to protect them (I know they're implying that he only wants to help her because she's the reason he and Ran stopped arguing when in middle school which makes me want to gag).
Shinichi kept the shooting secret too because Reiko wants him too (and also because he's probably interested in knowing why the culprit didn't shoot when he had a great shot).
I love they just let Kogoro accuse a man of serial murder and the police did not ask him for his reasoining and evidence before they took him to the man's home.
Shinichi bonds more with Reiko than he does with Ran. It makes sense, considering how much alike she is to Ai who is a much better friend to Shinichi and him to her than either he or Ran will be with one another (at least how they're written in canon).
Detective Conan is so insane. In no other anime will you have a shrunken teen knock a phone off its reciever and then imitate the sounds of the phone buttons in order to call the police for help. Oh they were stranded in the middle of a lake near a dam I should add. Also for once Shinichi wasn't off tune XD
Shinichi and Reiko are cut from the same cloth, lying to the police to get their own way. And both of them know each other did. Shinichi isn't wrong, Reiko is so much like Ai.
Oh fuck off Shinichi, you don't give as much of a shit about Ran as you like to believe you do and we all know it.
I mentioned in a poll earlier the oldest song I know is Amazing Grace. I am not ashamed to admit it was because of this movie.
I appreciate the movie naming the music that is being played.
And fuck off Ran as well. Don't make this movie about you and your shitty behaviour.
Another great part of this movie, Reiko helping Shinichi stall for time, Ai telling Shinichi about Satou's plan and Satou getting to be the one who stops the criminal from blowing the hall up. For a change, the female characters have their moment to shine in very important ways. Even Sonoko gets a moment. Ran... someone get her better writers.
And it's quite sad that this case was caused by a misunderstanding between two people.
Tumblr media
YES. SHE AND SHINICHI ARE PARTNERS IN CRIME.
Shinichi, why are you rewarding Ran's bratty behaviour from the start of this movie. She does not deserve it and needs to learn to accept that Shinichi told her no.
Anyway, a great movie. Remove the forced relationship between Ran and Shinichi, especially Ran's shitty behaviour, and it would be an almost perfect movie for me.
