For my Journaling projects I've been looking for a way to take pictures, but have them look vintage, or taken by a vintage camera, so my dad, being the pawn and thriftnunter he is (his version of my grandma's yard sale addiction I guess, lol) has provided me with an early birthday present! (He couldn't wait lol)
Still looking for film, but here is a polaroid model j33 land camera [left] and a kodak tourist II [right] also the flash holder but we aren't sure it's the right one, still a cool peice to have.
I grew up living with my grandparents who kinda never got past the 70s, so most of the stuff in their house was from the 50s 60s and 70s, and still working, if it didn't it was an important family heirloom from before. I'm really fond of stuff like this, it reminds me of my grandma teaching me to type on the heaviest "portable" typewriter ever, my grandfather showing us how to use the victrola, and my grandfather's love of photography and collecting every camera he's had since the 80s.
If you ever wanna see my hands tremble from excitement, this is the way to go lol.
Hopefully, I can get at least one of them working, the polarid seems functional, but finding film for the kodak is easier so we'll see. If anyone knows anything I'd love to know!
I love vintage stuff so much, tech, movies, places, ect. It's weird being (almost) 23 in the time period and feeling genuine excitement and nostalgia for things like this.

Street Photography in Bangkok, Exploring Thailand's Best Attractions
Tumblr media
Finally, I was back in Thailand, experiencing Thailand's attractions and taking street photography in Bangkok during my four-day, three-night vacation. Don't be surprised if I say this is my first travel experience in Bangkok. Yes, it was my first flight to Bangkok, and I found this holiday trip truly amazing. I stayed for four days and three nights at the Asia Hotel at Phaya Thai Rd. It was quite a different experience for me compared to the Hua Hin and Phuket trips a few years ago because, in Bangkok, I got to communicate more with the Thai locals there.Sawadee Krap and Kup Khun Krap are the most used words I used during the trip. For the four nights holidays in Bangkok, I found that I rarely stayed in a hotel and most of the time was out sightseeing at popular attractions around the city.https://youtu.be/QrEb_T5tQJsI was thrilled about this vacation, and after three years of the pandemic lockdown, I finally arrived in Thailand. My first visit to Bangkok was pretty hardcore, from touring around the city to taking street photography in various areas. Tommy, my friend, and I were there for holidays over the four days. We made a list of tourist sites and places to see in Bangkok. However, I may have made a mistake during my trip! Keep an eye out for the article.
Camera Gears
It's my first time travelling abroad with my Contax G1 film camera and Fujifilm X-T4. I always wanted a nice camera backpack that could fit two camera bodies, but I could not find one. I packed two rolls of Kodak Vision3 500T film, Fujicolor X-Tra 400, Kodak Gold, and Fomapan 400 and brought along my ND filter which was quite useful when shooting in the harsh sunlight. Before this trip, I looked up information about film labs in Bangkok and planned to develop my film there, but I didn't have time. So I had to get it developed at Kuala Lumpur film labs instead. As for my Fujifilm X-T4, I was shooting some short travel videos during my Bangkok trip. It was pretty huge for me when shooting street with the Fujifilm X-T4, I thought of getting a more smaller digital camera, but I still need it for some other portraits work. Most of the time, I've been shooting with my new Fujifilm video recipes and Nomadic Mood for some vintage vibe.
Staying at four stars Asia Hotel Bangkok
Traveling around the city while staying at Asia Hotel Bangkok is convenient as a BTS train station connects directly to the hotel on the first floor. Just a few minutes walk, and you get to Ratchathewi BTS Station. I booked the Superior room for about RM700+ for three nights which is quite affordable. I found the room quite spacious and the bathroom clean too.I guess I won't get lost in Bangkok if it's planned carefully because different types of public transport to choose from in Bangkok the tuk-tuks, Grab cars, taxis, and the BTS train. While all the rooms are non-smoking, smokers can smoke at the designated smoking area near the hotel lobby entrance. If you stayed at Asia Hotel, it was convenient because there are 7-Elevens just a few minutes away if you wanted some snacks. There are other shops, food vendors, and restaurants nearby.
Day 1 - Street Photography in Bangkok's Chinatown
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 // February 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 // February 2023 The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok took roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes. We arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 3 p.m. and headed to the Asia Hotel to check in. I was astonished by the traffic condition there. LOL. During peak hours, the road was congested with vehicles, buses, and tuk-tuks. We rested at the hotel before heading to Chinatown.I liked the nightlife vibe in Chinatown in Bangkok; it was different from Kuala Lumpur. The nightlife is alive! I get some lovely street photos, and the lighting there is speechless. Chinatown is the best place for street photography in Bangkok at night, capturing daily nightlife and people as there are a lot of activities going on.Chinatown in Bangkok is known as the largest Chinatown in the world (I heard it somewhere on one of the travel websites found online); it was busy and packed with tourists and locals. I tried to look for the prevalent fried bugs and insects I saw on Youtube, but I could not find them. No, I'm not interested in eating those bugs and insects; I want to take pictures of them. No luck, though. After dinner, we began our street photography in Bangkok's Chinatown. I was astounded by Chinatown, which was bustling with street food, tourists, automobiles, and tuk-tuks. This is one of my favorite photos from my street photography sessions. Getting a Haircut at Jodd Fairs Night Market, Sound Weird But True
Tumblr media
We get on a tuk-tuk ride to our next destination, from Chinatown to Jodd Fairs night market, which cost us about 500 baht. Following our street photography session, we went to the Jodd Fairs night market, formerly known as the Ratchada Train Night Market. I had been dying to get a haircut in Thailand, and I eventually got one for 300 baht at the night market. It was clean-cut, and I loved it. If you chance to be at the night market and want a haircut, you may find the barbershop a few stalls away from the night market's main entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The popular smoothie girl in Bangkok The most popular smoothie juice girl in Bangkok, who went viral on social media, can be seen at Jodd Fairs night market. Tourists from all over the world came to see the smoothie girl make dessert cocktails and fruit juices. If you've seen YouTube, you'll recognize her at the Jodd Fairs night market. My friend was shopping while I was getting a haircut at a barber shop at the night market. Then we relax at a stall serving beers, cocktails, and mocktails while listening to live Cuban music. Relax and unwind. We called it a night and returned to our hotel.
Day 2 - Exploring More Bangkok's Attractions
Probably the second day is one of the busiest days with lots of activities for us as we are exploring some of the popular destinations in the city. Our photo walk and street photography in Bangkok started early in the morning from our hotel to the Erawan Shrine, as we were also hungry and looking for a breakfast place. We visited a few popular tourist attractions, including the Chao Praya high-speed boat ride, checked out the night view at the highest observation deck in the town, and visited a few temples. Street Photography at Hua Lamphong Train Station
Tumblr media
Hua Lamphong Train Station My FJM street photographer's friends, who are from the street photography Malaysia club, recommended that I go to Hua Lamphong Train Station, a railway station in Pathum Wan, for a street photography session since the lighting is excellent in the morning. So Tommy and I decided to make it our next stop on our Day 2 investigation of Bangkok's highlights. We used a Grab vehicle, which cost around 100 baht.If you prefer sightseeing, you may visit the Hua Lamphong Train Station to experience the old-fashioned railway trains. You can travel by train from Hua Lamphong to Hua Hin. I was at Hua Hin train station during a previous Thailand trip, and it is connected. There's hardly much to do here besides taking photos if you're into light and shadow photography. Chao Praya High-Speed Boat Ride
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We chose to visit the famed Wat Arun after our session at the railway station but were unsure how to get there; luckily, a tour information guide approached us and described in detail how to go to the temple. I always wanted to experience riding a long-tailed speed boat in the Chao Praya River, and finally, I did it. Just like I saw in the Thai TV series dating back to the Ayutthaya period, Love Destiny, and The Kinnaree Conspiracy, to mention a few. We took a boat tour ride to the Bangkok Yai Canal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are wooden houses on both sides of the canal and access to a popular places of worship, such as the big buddha statue in Wat Pak Nam Temple, the floating market, and many more. The boat ride along the canal is also great for sightseeing and taking nice photos. On my sightseeing trip, I photographed daily life and old houses along the canal, and the people were welcoming too. While shooting, I kept swapping my film and digital camera to get certain scenes. We returned to our hotel, washed up, and prepared to meet Tommy's friend for dinner. We ate dinner at a restaurant near the King Power MahaNakhon skyscraper building. The next adventure in the city will undoubtedly be rewarding. Amazing Night City View at MahaNakhon Skywalk

today’s 10 minute project: restoring a tourist slide
So you have heard me tell about Pana-Vue slides, the ones that you could buy by the five-pack at every tourist trap and national monument in the 1950s-1970s, and how they were reprinted on cheap stock so after 10 years they shift colors toward amber or pink. Not long ago when I obtained a ridiculous number of slides there were three of these package, for a total of 15 slides, of the wonderful village of Skagway, Alaska.
Tumblr media
Let’s see what I can do to fix one of the slides... namely “Looking Down Main Street” because we have a preconceived notion of what a ‘downtown’ looks like so the original colors are easier to guess.
First image: A raw scan to show the original image and its discoloration.
Tumblr media
Yeah, we have a good candidate here. Second image, actually two of them for comparison, we’ll scan the slide using two scanner programs and have the Restore Colors settting turned on in both.
Tumblr media
The left one is using my Epson scanner’s included software, the right one is using Vue-Scan from Hamrick Software. [I am not being paid to plug this, but I did buy it once upon a time because its restoration abilities are astounding.] The small differences cause me to select the Vue-Scan edition, so moving on...
Third image: It’s time to remove the dust and noise, so I enable the Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement) feature, which in Vue-Scan is called Infrared Filter, and it does a second scan after the main one to come up with a noise profile to remove from the original photo. I think Medium strength should work best here. So let’s scan this slide again using the ICE:
Tumblr media
Ahh, yes, that’s better. There wasn’t a lot of noise and dust on this slide but it’s definitely more visible in the clouds what was removed. Since the Vue-Scan version was a bit lighter than the Epson version, I’m going to use Kodak’s ROC (Restore Original Colors) filter in IrfanView to increase the vibrance a mite. Yes, I could fiddle in color settings in Irfan instead but it’s easier in ROC. So for the Fourth image: Adjusting the black and white clipping thresholds to 1.5 each and setting the strength to 30 in the ROC filter...
Tumblr media
Fifth image: Since I was saving the ROC’d image manually anyhow, I took this moment to have IrfanView do a vertical flip because the writing on the sign in front of that building shows I had the slide turned over on the scanner...
Tumblr media
But now my eye goes to the graininess of the original image, visible in the nearest building’s green roof. Kodak’s GEM (Grain Enhancement Module) filter may be of assistance here, so in the Sixth image: again using IrfanView I fire up the GEM filter, setting all sliders to 50% with the noise radius to 2 so it’s not totally smoothed out (as the default is) and yet not as ‘gritty’. Once that was processed, since I still had to save the image anyway, I bumped the Saturation to 70 to add a slight bit more color strength.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly the grain filter had almost no effect on the dirt road, it just softened the roof. I can live with this rendition!

Ride Every Mile?
The loaded Bantam, “cheating” on the return from the Milo McIver overnight. 15 April 2021. Camera: Olympus Pen EES-2. Film: Kodak Pro Image 100. One of the great things about my time working at the hostel was the bike tourists. As someone who loves traveling via bike, it was always fun interacting with fellow enthusiasts. I always made sure to let them know I was available for help with touring…

Final Project Field Plan
Goals/ Objective:
This photo essay is a branch off of a personal project I have already been working on this past year about native New Yorkers that give and are part of the “street culture” of New York City. The project aims to highlight the native New Yorkers (that I personally know) that make this city the cultural epicenter that it is. By being a part of their respective “scenes” or subcultures, these people by proxy inspire tourists worldwide to flock to New York City with the goal to take part and meet others of these urban subcultures. My friends are the people that inspire other skateboarders, BMX riders, alleycat racers, urban explorers, or graffiti artists to come here and be recognized on a global scale, as New York City is a scene that everyone from around the world pays attention to get a pulse on what’s happening in the scene, and the direction it’s going.
That being said, the premise of the project was to remove people out of the environments of their respective subcultures (the skatepark, a subway tunnel, the stairs of Union Square) and take their portraits in more intimate environments such as their home, their art studios, a place sentimental to them, etc. Essentially stripping them of their “titles” and just photographing them as “normal people”, posing questions of identity. Are these people as “relevant” in their “normal lives”? Do these portraits have the same ability to captivate the viewer as if they were viewing  a photo of this person within the context of “Thrasher” magazine, or across the finish line, or in a graffiti zine, or at their art exhibition? What is the actual identity of people whose lines are blurred between “just a hobby” and complete personal identity?
For my personal project, I seek to go a bit deeper than a simple portrait, and instead create a photo essay about “F”: a good friend of mine, a father, a husband, a son, an architect, a graffiti writer, a New Yorker. Specifically I seek to examine in greater detail this division of identities and the intricate balancing act of them all, as only some overlap exists between certain identities, while others are fiercely compartmentalized and protected. I plan to continue examining how “F” gives to “street culture” of New York City by working on the buildings that create our visual landscape while contrastingly writing graffiti on separate architecture, and finally, what he takes home from it all at the end of the day, if anything at all.
Tentative Field Plan from November 1st – December 12th.
Week 1: 11/1 – 11/7
Meet with “F” in his home located in Harlem.
Portraits of “F” and nuclear family (son and wife).
Photography Direction: home life taking place in the living room and kitchen.
Map out the specifics of future “actions” in the coming weekends and making equipment decisions for future “kits”.
Supplies: Pentax K-1000 and 3200 speed film (the apartment does not receive much direct sunlight and I am expecting to meet more towards evening time).
Week 2: 11/8 – 11/14
Develop photos from week prior, begin making selections and edits.
“Action” 1
Tentative date: weekend of 11/11, 11/12, 11/13. Midnight hours.
Location: NYC subway tunnels, exact location undetermined
Vision for graffiti; undetermined
Photography Direction: action shots using flash, long exposure atmospheric shots, “double” exposure long exposures devoting half the exposure time to portraiture and the other half to action, normal portrait shots (flash use TBD depending on lighting), photos entering and exiting (safety permitting), photos of preparation and clean up.
Supplies Required: Spraypaint (amount and colors TBD), Backpack, face masks, respirators, gloves, Pentax K1000 camera, tripod, fill flash (need to request from department), 2 rolls of Kodak TMax 3200 film.
Week 3: 11/15 – 11/21
Develop photos from week prior, continue making selections and edits.
“Action” 2
Tentative Date: Weekend of 11/18, 11/19, 11/20. Midnight Hours.
Climbing atop the Williamsburg Bridge
Weather dependent ***
Plan B- Tunnel Part 2 (specifics TBD)
Required materials will be same as “Action” 1
Photography Direction: long exposures of architecture/infrastructure, long exposures of the cityscape in the distance most likely using bracketing techniques. Closeup portraiture of “F” against the backdrop of the beams/ infrastructure (hoping to have sufficient light to not require flash but will use if necessary), portraits from farther back showing full body and location (long exposure), portraits of “F” with cityscape background (long exposure), action shots ascending/descending the bridge (no flash, lighting should be sufficient in the lower parts), the walk on the way to and from the action (before and after), quick action shots of “F” writing graffiti.
Graffiti not intended to be as involved as “Action” 1. It functions on this occasion more so to simply mark, “I was here”.
Supplies Required: 3 cans of spray paint (colors TBD), backpack, gloves, face masks, Pentax K1000 camera, tripod, fill flash, 2 rolls of32800 speed film (Kodak TMax).
Week 4: 11/22 – 11/28
Focus on continued development of photos and heavy focus on printing this week.
Thanksgiving Week **
Not much time for shooting this week due to holiday.
Will visit “F” and nuclear family in their Harlem home briefly over the weekend to spend some time, give thanks, and shoot minimally. I do not plan to use more than half a roll of 800 speed film.
Required supplies: 800 speed film, Pentax K1000.
Week 5: 11/29 – 12/5
Friendsgiving
Location: New Jersey
Date: Saturday, 12/3/22.
Photography Direction: Portraits of “F”, nuclear family, and close friends. Photos are planned to be a more intimate view into the personal aspect of his life and the bond shared amongst friends, and the love and warmth created around sharing a meal together. Atmospheric photos of the table settings and layout, the food and drink provided, and the celebration as the night goes on.
Required Materials: 800 speed film and fill flash (use is light dependent— some parts of the house have sufficient lighting and others do not).
Week 6: 12/6 – 12/12
Continued development and selection making and editing of photos. More final edits pulling the entire project together.
Office Visit scheduled for December 10th, Saturday.
Will be receiving tour of “F” architectural firm.
Specific name of firm will be purposefully excluded from the documentation.
Briefs of current projects under works
Visit of one work site after office visit
“F” to show the work underway personally from the ground level; entry onto lifts/ scaffolding not permitted.
Conversation with “F” as to his interpretation of the work he does during weekdays versus the work he does for hobby and how they interrelate.
Photography Direction: Atmospheric shot of the office, closer shots of his desk/workstation. Shots of plans, blueprints, computer workstation, materials brought back from site, materials used for building inspections. Pictures of “F” dressed for a day of work. Full body shots of him leaning against his desk. Close up portraits sitting in his work chair, him answering emails. Work site direction include taking photos of the work in general, and perhaps a photo making a physical representation as to the work being done (a pointed finger, a closeup detail of façade if possible). Work site specifics TBD depending on access.

A Tale of Two Cities
Nearing the western end of the French Riviera lies Antibes. The train from Villefranche took about a half hour right along the coast. Perfect weather again. Beautiful.
We heard of a walk around Cap d’Antibes, the westernmost outcrop jutting into the sea. The path skirts the shore, in and out of small bays and inlets, up and down steps to points chock full of Kodak moments. (Older folks here may want to explain to the young‘uns what a Kodak moment is). The tourist bureau informed us that we would have to take a bus to the trailhead as it was quite aways from the RR station.
We got to the bus terminal, found the right bus and were ready to go. Checking the map showed us that we must get off at Fontaine, the closest stop to the trail. As we boarded the bus, I summoned up my best french to tell the driver what our needs were and with perfect pronunciation said, “quatre billets pour Fontaine, s’il vous plait.” The driver paused, looked at me quizzically and slowly responded, “‘ow meny teekeets?” I said, “four,” gave him the six euros, and we took our seats. Classic!
Got to the trail and the walk did not disappoint. Just gorgeous. Tough walk though. Every once and a while you’d get a glimpse of some of the incredible mansions behind the walls inland from the sea. Later, we looked at them on Google Earth. Truly decadent.
We ventured back the way we came, by bus (same driver, this time Chuck conducted the transaction). We walked down into the old town of Antibes to have lunch. It was not one if my favorite places. Big tourist vibe. T-shirts and tchotchkes. Small beach, not particularly interesting.
The walk was great, but I don’t think I’ll be going back to Antibes any time soon.
Menton is at the other end. The last town on the eastern end of the Côte d’Azur before you head into Italy. When we boarded the train for Menton, there were a whole bunch of tourists from the cruise ship that had pulled into Villefranche that morning. It made for a very full train, something we haven’t really experienced so far. But, they all disembarked at Monaco/Monte Carlo, the second stop, leaving us with a deserted train car for the thirty minute ride.
We wanted to see the old town, the beach promenade, and perhaps score a boat ride along the coast. As we looked about for the tourist office for directions, an older French gentleman in his late seventies or early eighties offered to help us. He insisted that we follow him as he led us to the information office, several blocks away. He was not going in that direction, just a nice dude. We engaged in a bit of conversation, and he was nice enough to compliment me on my French. It was a very cool stroll. No ugly American here!
There was a farmer’s market going on near the seashore, so we checked that out. Fresh food to die for. Had a bit of lunch at a local sandwich stand, before checking out the harbor for boat rides.
Information about possible tours was kinda lacking, but Shirley engaged the services of a local fish monger on the docks who pointed us in the right direction.
Arriving at the boat (think HMS Minnow) the captain (think been drinking a little since waking up) informed us that we could take the 2:30 trip along the coast into Italy, 1 1/4 hours for 19 euros each. So we had an hour an a half to kill.
Walking around Menton was really neat. Totally different feel from Antibes. Not a tourist town. The brightly colored buildings rise from the sea upon the cliffs surrounding the town. We walked to an old cemetery, where many of the town’s elite have been enterred since the town’s inclusion into the principality of Monaco in 1814. Lots of Russians are buried there for some reason. I’ll have to research that a little. Tough walk to get there (guide book said it was mostly a flat walk....lies!), but worth it for the view.
Back to the harbor for our maritime excursion. There was only one other couple on the ride, so we had pretty much the entire boat to ourselves. Terrific way to spend the afternoon. The sea was calm, and the motor was unexpectedly quiet as we relaxed the day away admiring the beauty of this part of the world.
The Captain has some music playing while we motored around. Mostly some Italian upbeat pop stuff. What was odd, though, were two songs right in the middle of the voyage, Satisfaction and These Arms of Mine, both from the 1967 album Otis Redding, Live in Europe. And then back to the Europop. Chillin’ on a creaky boat in the Mediterranean singing along with Otis. Gotta love it.
Back to Villefranche. The obligatory visit to Monaco and Monte Carlo tomorrow. Supposed to rain like crazy.

We and our friends made several tours in order to get to know our own country. Unfortunately not everyone in our group is available to make multi-day trips, so we are organizing small trips near the areas where we live. Since the majority lives in Lisbon, we end up choosing places that are close by and in Lisbon there are many.
This time, we took with us the analog photograph. I (Sara) carried my Nikon FM2 and my brother (the Gonçalo) took his Canon Eos 300. We had a 50mm 1.8. Unfortunately for me, my Nikon ran out of battery and not wanting to compromise the photometry I decided not to use it. We went to Mafra and Ericeira, with 2 Rollei Infrared 400 and 2 Kodak Ultramax 400 in the pocket.
In Mafra we visited the National Palace of Mafra. To summarize its history, the National Palace of Mafra is located 25 km from Lisbon and consists of a palace and a monastery of baroque architecture. It was built on the initiative of King João V of Portugal by virtue of a promise he had made in the name of the descent that would come from Queen Dona Maria Ana of Austria.
The biggest treasure of Mafra is its Library. Marble floor, rococo style bookcases and a collection of more than 36,000 books with gold-plated leather bindings. Its main rival is the library of the Abbey of Melk, Austria.
Desta vez, levamos connosco a fotografia analógica.
