I’ve been working so much the past few weeks that I’ve made myself ill 🤧 I have so much stuff I want to post but just don’t have the mental capacity to do it at the moment. I apologise if anyone has messaged me and I haven’t responded, I’ll try to get back to everyone over the weekend. For now I’m just going to sleep 😴  #lbd #summerhat #sustainablefashionuk #knowtheorigin#redhairstyle

This #EarthDay I give you a flashback to the People’s Climate March of 2017 and recommend you follow @going.zero.waste @nrdc_org @zerowastehome @savingthewaves @sunrisemvmt @extinctionrebellion @gretathunberg @ejfoundation These resources will teach you about environmental activism, big and small-scale ways you can reduce your impact on the planet and boycott companies and industries that destroy it. None of us are perfect but there’s always at least a few changes we could make: *learn about how climate change or pollution is manifesting in your area and who it’s affecting most. Learn how you can support their fight for environmental justice and clean air/water. *limit your meat intake and see if you can find a local farm to get your meat from a non-factory farm. Not everyone (including me) can go vegan, but we can certainly cut back *even if you live in the city, there may be a company like @bootstrapcompost that can collect your food waste for you *boycott Nestle, Chase Bank, Wells Fargo and other extremely environmentally damaging companies and investigate which companies own what *switch to reusable straws and keep one in every purse or satchel *get a collapsible cup like @stojo or a reusable water bottle or thermos- most coffee shops will gladly just put your drink in there *look into safe battery disposal; batteries are one of the worst pollutants *try out a bamboo toothbrush like @from_earth_to_earth - the only one I’ve found that’s light on my sensitive teeth! *limit car and air travel and rely on public transportation as much as you can *the fashion industry is a huge polluter, so go thrift/secondhand shopping or see what environmentally conscious brands like @rothys, @amourvert, @matatraders or @knowtheorigin have to offer. *gather your friends to pick up litter in your area! There are so many ways to reduce your impact on the planet and fight for our future. #thereisnoplanetb #ethicalconsumer #environmentalism #greenlifestyle #climatechange #cleanair #fightforyourworld #greenenergy #renewableenergy #cleanwater #environmentaljustice #climatechangeisreal https://www.instagram.com/p/BwkW0nrAQMv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uh27sj37sjk2

Know The Origin: The Fairtrade Fashion brand with a difference
In celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight, we’re thinking about all things eco here at Marketplace.
Tumblr media
Just a few weeks ago, we welcomed Know The Origin to our site. Aesthetically pleasing, reasonably priced AND Fairtrade, Know The Origin is a clothing brand with a difference.
Following an eye-opening trip to the community where the Rana Plaza factory collapsed, uni friends and fellow design students, Charlotte Instone and Laura Lodge felt compelled to act. And so, 18 months ago, they founded Know The Origin with one aim: to produce trend-inspired clothes that are Fairtrade-organic from seed to final garment. And that’s just what they’ve managed to do!
We caught up with the lovely Charlotte at her East London studio to talk all things KTO.
Tumblr media
What’s your background; had you always wanted to own a Fairtrade fashion business?
I studied buying and merchandising at London College of Fashion, and in my second year the Rana Plaza factory collapsed. I was on a course studying how you make products but I’d never actually thought about the people behind it. I went out to Bangladesh with a friend from uni and spent some time in the community, hearing the stories and the impact it had. When I came back I wanted to set up a website that stocked different ethical brands but couldn’t find enough that were to the level of ethics that I wanted, but also affordable and stylish – there’s just not that many out there that do all three! So I decided to look at whether we could create a product you can trace all the way back. Whether it could be Fairtrade right to the cotton farmer, through spinning, ginning, dying; all of these processes. That’s why we founded Know The Origin.
How did you set up the business?
We went to India and Bangladesh, and spent some time going around Fairtrade and organic producers and looking for people that didn’t just tick the boxes of paying people properly, but started their businesses with purpose of changing communities. We visited some awesome people. We spent time in Dharamsala at the bottom of the Himalayas. We spent some time in the factories and got to know all the people working there. We realised how many people’s lives are affected by just one T-shirt! There’s over 80 people involved in the process of making one. For me that was epic - going and meeting all these people!
Tell us about the kind of people and factories you work with.
We use a factory called Freeset in Kolkatta and they basically work with women in the Red Light district. Around 40% of women there have been trafficked from areas of Bangladesh, but the majority have been in prostitution. This factory is a rehabilitation centre. The bottom floor is counselling and therapy, and as you go up the floors it’s more intense levels of training. We make some of our T-shirts there, which is incredible! It’s such a place of celebration and joy; that’s how it should be. We use another factory called MILA in South India and it’s tiny, there’s like six people there full-time and others come in temporarily. They offer interest free loans to people who work there, so they can buy housing and become more self-sufficient. A lot of people that work there are refugees, so they make sure that people can set up bank account and have the stability and rights.
Do you think there’s an increased awareness about issues like this now?
I think it is exploding; I think we’re right at the bottom of a wave. The education is definitely increasing. Just look this week at Emma Watson’s new Instagram account about ethical brands! There’s lot of ethical brands coming through that do care about style, and I think that’s why it’s never taken off because people shouldn’t, and don’t want to, compromise on style, price and convenience. It’s a hard balance, but it’s really do-able.
What’s the future of the brand?
We’re now looking at a way we can do this large scale; can we work with a lot of different producer groups in different countries and build up an amazing network of suppliers and producers that want to change the way the fashion industry is run? In the next few years there are a few bits of technology coming out to allow us to do that. My dream is for someone to pick up a T-shirt, have a code, type it into a website and see every person that’s touched it.
