seriously, Worf accepting discommendation sucks so bad. all these big powerful klingons are getting him alone in a room and saying “look, kiddo, if you don’t agree to this For The Good of the Empire, you’re not a real Klingon,” despite the fact that it goes against everything the Empire supposedly stands for, and he just does it! Because he wants to be a Real Klingon and show he cares about the Empire. But the Empire isn’t Qo’nos, the Empire is a couple dozen super corrupt assholes on the Council like K’mpec and Duras, and what he should do, if he really cares about the Klingon spirit or whatever, is burn it all down so that something better can rise from the ashes. That would be the Klingon way. Not some shady-ass backroom politicking aimed at keeping a spoiled brat’s public image spotless.

S4E07: Reunion
In this episode, Worf’s romantic interest shows up with their love child and promptly gets fridged.
I found myself unmoved by this episode. However I did wonder about cultural values in space. Worf is really into getting married (sorry, “taking the oath”). K’Ehleyr is not. I get the impression that future human culture is pretty chill about sex outside of marriage, but I can't think of any unmarried character who has a child (though my Star Trek knowledge is less than encyclopedic). Is Klingon culture the scapegoat representative of conservative values here? Like, “oh the humans of the future are chill and accepting of children out of wedlock, but those brutish Klingons are really stuck on 20th century values!”?? I guess I'm running into the difference between my own utopian view of the future, and tng’s creator’s view in 1990.
Anyways, take a look at this sweet swirly chalice that K’mpec has:

TNG Klingon Lore…
“Sins of the Father”
I regularly listen to the “Mission Log” podcast, where EACH episode of Star Trek and it’s spinoffs are dissected for its strengths and message. Beginning with the 1st pilot episode of TOS, till midway through season 3 of TNG (as of yet), we come to the inherent moral dilemma of the House of Mogh, the House of Duras, and Klingon succession.
Briefly, Worf learns that he has a Klingon brother, Q'rn, and that the House of Mogh (an honorable and once powerful family, though virtually non-existent after the Khitomer Massacre) had been accused of supplying military information to the Romulans that resulted in the attack. Worf must answer the claim.
The traitors actually come from the House of Duras, but the family is so powerful, so well connected, so immersed in the “sausage factory” that is Klingon politics that the revelation would plunge the Empire into civil war. In the end, Worf chooses the conceal his brother’s bloodline, and accept “Discommendation”, or to be formally stripped of house, title, and honor within the Empire for seven generations.
Mission Log goes into some deep detail discussing the moral challenges, and in the next few posts, offer my own insight in rebuttal.
