Adara’s story, part fourty five
Epilogue
“Thank you everyone for being here today” Queen Celeste said from her seat on the throne. Or just Celeste now I suppose. After the battle 3 months ago, she was stepping down from her position. The throne room was filled to the brim with people wanting to see this momentous occasion. I stood with near the front with Aegean and Laila and my side.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era for the Blue Kingdom, and I hope a better one” she stood up and gestured for Prince Klenn and Elda to come forward. I heard whispered complaints all around me. Many had concerns about Elda taking the throne along with the Prince. I, to my own surprise, wasn’t among them. Elda knew how to take command and lead, which is what the Kingdom desperately needed after months of uncertainty. I was also excited to have a Nekojin in charge, a first for the Blue Kingdom. With the two of them working together, things would hopefully start to change for the better.
“Klenn Blue, Elda Mir. Are you ready and willing to commit yourselves to the people of the Blue Kingdom until your first born comes of age?” Celeste asked them, her voice serious.
“We are” Elda said after sharing a look with Klenn. After the battle for the Kingdom, no one knew what would come next. Neither side technically won, as the fighting stopped after Cobalt and Azure fell. A council was formed shortly after of prominent members of each side of the conflict. Azure’s side wanted what they were promised, a new royal line, one not dominated by humans. Celeste wanted to follow tradition and keep the blue line on the throne. After months of deliberation, this was the decision they landed on. The kingdom would be co led by one of Celeste’s children and one of Azure’s followers until they bore a blue-blooded child who wasn’t a human. Klenn and Elda ended up being chosen. In the meantime, the two were to work on relations with the packs around the Kingdom and fair and equal treatment for everyone living within the walls.
“Then by my power, I pronounce you Sir Klenn and Lady Elda. Rule with compassion for all and may you lead us into a bright future” Celeste finished, placing golden bands upon both their heads. The crowd cheered, drowning out anyone with misgivings about the new rulers. Celeste approached me, a smile on her face. She took me into her arms.
“Thank you for taking care of my son, Adara. I’ve got it from here” she released me and crouched down in front of Aegean. “Let’s go home” she told him. Aegean grinned in response. Now that he was no longer next in line to be King, there was nothing keeping him here. He took my hand and squeezed it softly.
“Promise you’ll come visit? You still have to meet my dad” how could I say no to that face?
“Of course I will” I promised. With that, Celeste and Aegean left the castle, hand in hand. I had never seen the pair look so happy, so free. I picked Laila up and held her close.
“We should go too” I said to Laila.
When we got back to the Pinewood pack, celebrations were in full swing. Lanterns hung from the trees, basking the clearing in a soft glow. As far as everyone here was concerned, we had won. A Nekojin on the throne, Lily gone for good, peace in and around the Kingdom. Things were looking up for the Pinewood pack. Laila and I sat down at a table among the trees with Hari and Kato.
“Hey Kato, Hari” I greeted them. Hari cleared in throat.
“That’s alpha Hari to you” Hari grinned, putting his arm around Kato.
“What, you finally confessed?” I asked Kato in surprise.
“What do you mean finally?!” Kato huffed, his cheeks reddening. I just rolled my eyes in response. He was so obvious, and oblivious.
“And I am not calling you that Hari”
“Unbelievable! I could have you exiled for this!” Hari teased, laughing.
“What did I miss?” came Luna’s voice from behind me. She bent down to kiss my cheek before sitting next to me.
“Oh, nothing important” I smirked at Hari. He put up his hands in mock offense.
I let myself space out as the others chatted away, Laila dozing off on my lap. I leaned against Luna’s shoulder and held her hand in mine as I watched the sun set over the trees of my beloved forest.

Adara’s story, part fourty two
I always thought I’d visit here on different circumstances. Very different circumstances. I was planning on coming here eventually, try to see if I could meet Jes’ family. Maybe give Laila the grandparents that I couldn’t. Farmland stretched out in front of me as far as the eye could see. The sun was beginning to rise, turning the fields to gold. It must have been a beautiful place to grow up. Huge red barns and cottage like homes were scattered throughout the massive landscape and I couldn’t help but wonder which one was his. There was time for that later. Now, I stood with the other retainers and steeled myself for the coming fight. Most of the royal retainers were here, though Prince Klenn was the only royal child here to fight. His siblings were too young and were at the hiding out at the castle. I couldn’t help but notice Khalil and Princess Cyan’s absence in particular. King Cobalt and Queen Celeste were at the head of the crowd. The King on a sleek dark brown horse, a golden lance in hand. The Queen at his side, a grim look of determination on her face. Gone were the gowns and jewels, now she stood tall in shining silver armor. Sasha and the Oakleaf pack arrived shortly after I did, they stood with the Brightmeadow pack now. I recognized the wolves who had escorted us off their territory; Robin waved at me as we made eye contact. I jumped as I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you” Luna smiled down at me, her white hair shimmering in the dawn light. “This is for you” she handed me a blue band.
“What’s this for?”
“Wear it on your panther form, so everyone can tell what side you’re on. The last thing we need is to injure what few soldiers we have” Luna explained grimly.
“Right. So, what is the plan exactly? Sable told me Azure convinced the Coldflame Kingdom to side with her”
“That’s correct and I have received word that the Desert Kingdom agreed to help us, unfortunately, as we thought we had until the end of the season, we don’t know if they’ll make it on time”
“Okay, that’s not great” I winced.
“No. I also had to leave behind some soldiers to protect the Prince Aegean and the princesses. We’re hoping that having the King and Queen lead the charge, Azure won’t bother with the castle and I can send someone get said soldiers. It’s risky, but we don’t have much of a choice”
I nodded in agreement. I was glad Aegean had at least some protection.
“Adara” Luna began softly.
“Yes?”
“When the fighting starts, please be careful”
“I’m always careful” I nudged her arm playfully. I stopped smiling as I saw her eyebrows knit together in concern. “I will, I promise. I know what I’m doing Luna”
“Just… I’d be… upset if anything were to happen to you” Luna stuttered, her face flushing a bright red. I’d never seen her blush so much, and because of me?
“I’d be upset if anything happened to you too” I said sincerely, gently grabbing her hand. It was warm in mine and trembling ever so slighting. I gave it tight squeeze before releasing it. Now I was blushing. I was falling for her. I could see that clearly now. I had to say something, I might not get another chance.
“Luna, I…”
“Adara look!” Luna interrupted, pointing to the horizon. I squinted and sure enough I could see figures approaching. Voices around us began chattering excitedly.
“They’re coming from the south, maybe it’s the Desert Army!” someone called.
“It must be!” said another. “We’re saved!”
Something was wrong, a feeling of cold dread rose in my chest. I turned to see more figures approaching from the forest and fields to our right and left. We weren’t saved, we were surrounded.
“Luna…” I started.
“I know”
The excitement in the air quickly turned to fear and panic as the figures drew nearer. We were massively outnumbered, and they were quickly closing in. Azure and Elda were at the head of the army from the south, while a wolfskin I didn’t recognize led the group from the fields. But it was the leader of the figures from the forest that caught my eye. Long brown hair tied back, blue eyes full of malice. Lily. She had the audacity to wink at me as our eyes met. I let out a low growl. In my focus, I didn’t realize Luna had called over Sable.
“Sable, plans have changed. I need you to go to the castle for reinforcements now” Luna ordered. Sable nodded with determination.
“Wait, you’re sending Sable?” I questioned, fear trilling through me. I had come to care for the girl and imagining her alone right now terrified me.
“It’s okay, I’ve got this” Sable assured me.
“Are you sure?”
“I can do it; this is what you trained me for Adara”
“Okay” I sighed. I put my hand on her head and ruffled her hair. “Just stay alert. And good luck” I secretly didn’t know if a few more soldiers would really make much a difference, but we needed all the help we could get.
“She’ll be okay” Luna tried to reassure me as Sable ran for the castle. I hoped she was right. Azure’s army was now only several yards away, around us a loose semi-circle. Azure radiated confidence, she stood, leaning on her sword. Her armor shone like white gold, her helmet shaped like a crown.
“Cobalt dear, what a cute little army you’ve got here” Azure spoke with a voice dripping with condescension.
“It’ll be enough to beat the likes of you” The King bellowed; I could see the grip on his lance tighten.
“Is that so” Azure laughed cruelly. “And to think I was going to offer you one more chance to surrender”
“Never” Queen Celeste spat in response.
“Very well, it’s your funeral” Azure raised a hand to the sky. She swung it down towards us, giving the signal to attack.

Adara’s story part twenty five
I woke up as I heard my front door swing open. I’d be concerned if I didn’t know of Hari’s aversion to knocking. I had fallen asleep on my couch in the back room, Laila curled up in my arms. I looked out the window to see the sun rising. Hari had great timing; he could babysit while I went to the castle. I can’t believe I was someone who needed a babysitter now. I detangled myself from Laila and hopped into the next room, intercepting Hari in the doorway.
“Hari, I need a favor and I need you not to ask any questions”
“Mmm, good morning to you too. Is everything alright?”
I gave him an exasperated look in response.
“Aw come on Adara, that counts as a question?”
“Yes, just come with me” I told him as I dragged him into the living room. Laila had woken up and was rubbing her eyes blearily.
“I’m sorry Laila, did we wake you up?” I asked her, before turning to Hari, “I need you to babysit”
“That’s the favor? I don’t know anything about kids! Who even is this?” Hari blurted out. I signed internally, so much for no questions. I guess I was asking a bit much from him.
“This is my daughter, mine and Jes’”
“Oh” he responded simply. Wow, Hari lost for words. I never thought I’d see that day.
“Okay. I’ll watch her, but you have a lot of explaining to do when you get back!”
I gave Laila a hug told her, “I’ll be back soon, I promise”
___
Remaining focused at the castle today was a difficult task. My thoughts kept drifting to Laila. Was Hari really the best choice for a babysitter? He was hardly the responsible type. But who else could I have asked? Aegean apologized to me first thing this morning about going off on his own, though I could tell he didn’t regret it. He had also told me that Lark gave him a really hard time yesterday after we found him, so I decided to go easy on him today. It was partially my fault anyways. Luckily for both of us, the King and Queen were still in the dark about what had happened. As was Luna, my neck was saved this time. Not that I couldn’t handle her. As we walked around the castle, we heard a commotion in the usually quiet throne room.
“What do you think that’s about?” Aegean asked me, curiosity sparkling in his brown eyes.
“Aegean… we just barely got away with yesterday's… incident. Now you what, want to sneak into the throne room?”
“I didn’t say that!”
“You didn’t have to” I surprised myself at how well I knew this boy after just a few days together, but I guess he was a pretty open book, at least with me. He went silent for a moment, probably thinking up the right words to convince me.
“I’m supposed to be the next King, right? Shouldn’t I know what’s going on in the kingdom?”
I mean, he wasn’t wrong. As long as we weren’t caught, what was the harm?
“Fine, but just for a few minutes”
We ended up using one of the side doors to the throne room, just opening it a crack to listen in.
“What is the meaning of this?” King Cobalt’s bellowing voice rang out.
“Father please!” A young woman pleaded. She had her long blond hair tied up in a bun, surrounded by a delicate silver and blue tiara. She was standing next to a shorter boy with the same shiny blond hair wearing a matching headpiece. They must be two of Aegean’s older siblings, I thought to myself as I watched the scene.
“How dare you bring those traitors here!”
“Cobalt give them a chance to speak” Queen Celeste tried to calm him. She nodded encouragingly to her children. Cobalt huffed but gestured reluctantly for them to continue.
“Thank you, we brought the alphas of the Oakleaf and Brightmeadow packs here to speak with you about the recent attacks on the northern wall. They have assured us that they, and their pack mates are not responsible for said attacks” the princess explained.
Two new figures stepped into view. The first I recognized as the alpha of the Oakleaf pack, a group of Wolfskin who neighbored the Pinewood pack. She stood tall, unafraid in the face of King Cobalt’s hostility. Her long orange hair was tied tightly back, and her green eyes glimmered with determination. The second was presumably the alpha of the Kitsune pack, alpha Connor. I had never met him, but I had heard of him, and his... relaxed style of leadership. He stood next to Sasha, ears held high, looking perfectly at ease in spite of the tense situation.
“That is correct your majesty. We have been at peace with the Blue Kingdom for generations, my wolves and I have no reason to stir up trouble now” Sasha spoke with a commanding tone. She reminded me of the previous leader of the Pinewood pack, alpha Jonas. Connor nodded in agreement, his fluffy blond hair bouncing to the movement.
“Then how do you explain the Wolfskin and Kitsune that have been attacking the border?” Cobalt accused.
“With all due respect your highness, there are plenty of Kitsune and Wolfskin living outside of our packs, we can’t take responsibility for them” Connor broke in, an easy confidence in his hazel eyes.
“Not to mention the ones living right here in the Blue Kingdom” Sasha added.
“And why pray tell, would they have any reason to attack their home?” Cobalt countered. Sasha flicked her ears uncomfortably and shared a look with Connor. He cleared his throat before speaking.
“Perhaps some of the non-human residences of the Kingdom are not, how should I put this. Not entirely content with their living situation”
“Just what are you implying?”
“What Connor means to say, is not to rule out any possibilities, even from those within your walls. That said this could easily be the work a few rogues and thus nothing to worry about” Sasha assured, giving Connor a sharp look.
I could see King Cobalt mulling over their words carefully. Queen Celeste leaned over to him and whispered to him, too quietly for me to pick up.
“Hmm, you have made some valid points I suppose. The Blue Kingdom will not be taking action against either of your packs for the time being, you are dismissed” Cobalt finished, gesturing them away. Sasha nodded grimly and left without another word. Connor gave a small bow and retreated after Sasha.
“Cyan, Klenn. You two stay, as well as your retainers.” was the last thing I heard King Cobalt say before I pulled Aegean away from the door.
“That sounded pretty serious” Aegean commented when we were a safe distance away.
“They’re probably just overreacting, everything’s fine” I tried to reassure him.
“You don’t think they’ll fight because of this, do you Adara?” He asked me, concern plain on his face.
“I’m sure it won’t come to that” but really, I wasn’t so sure. Lark’s rumors were one thing, but seeing that... Things have never been great in the Blue Kingdom for Wolfskin, Kitsune and the like. If they banned together and started a revolution, did the Kingdom stand a chance?

Adara’s story, part twenty
I arrived at The Blue Castle as the sun had risen high in the sky. A bit later then I would have liked for my first day but it could’ve been worse considering the events of this morning. I ended up telling Sable that I needed some time to think over her request. I’m sure she would be bugging me about it again soon, but I could worry about that later. For now, I needed to find Prince Aegean and do whatever it was that I was supposed to. I nodded to the guards at the entrance before entering the towering stone gate.
“Adara!”
I looked up to see Prince Aegean leaning out his window, waving at me. Hmph, didn’t take long to find him. I gave him a small wave back. He gestured to the courtyard and disappeared into his room.
___
I meet Aegean a few minutes later in the same courtyard where I competed to be his retainer. Walking behind him were two other people, my stomach clenched as I saw a flash of white hair. As they came closer I realized it wasn’t who I thought it was, but a Kitsune who I didn’t know. Not a knight, but a retainer, as was the man beside her, based on their matching blue tunics. The man approached me first, holding out his hand in introduction,
“You must be Adara, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Khalil Caldwell, I’m a retainer to Princess Cyan”
He had an angular face and a warm smile surrounded my dark brown hair pulled back in a small ponytail. I shook his hand before turning to the woman.
“Hey, I’m Jade. Retainer to Klenn” she winked as me as I took her hand.
“Prince Klenn” Khalil corrected. Jade just shrugged and rolled her eyes in response. I bet her and Hari would get along, I thought to myself. Her straight white hair framed her pretty face and her hazel eyes had a sparkle of mischief. I’d have to watch out for this one.
“Anyways, Adara, if you’ll kindly follow Jade, she’ll take you to get your uniform. I’ll stay with Prince Aegean until you are dressed and ready” Khalil gestured to Jade who nodded before heading towards the northern entrance back into the castle. I followed her quickly.
___
I took in my surroundings as Jade led me down corridors. The castle was just as grand as I remembered. Embroidered tapestries, tall marble columns and elaborately painted ceilings. Mother would have loved to have seen those paintings. She would’ve appreciated them a lot more than I did. Jade’s voice brought me back to the present.
“Right through here Adara” she pointed to a door on the right. We entered the room together. It was simple in comparison to the hallway we had just walked through, the floor was carpeted in a mossy green and the walls were lined with rows of plain bunks.
“We got a bed ready for you in case you choose to stay here, and your uniform is right here” Jade continued, lifting a stack of clothes off the bed nearest to us.
“Thank you” I responded quietly, unsure of what else to say.
“I’ll leave you to it then, I should probably get back to Klenn, see you around Adara!” she called as she exited the room. Glad to be alone for a moment, I took a calming breath before unfolding the clothes. It was a simple tunic, the colour of the sky after rain and a black belt made of some sort of leather. I removed my cloak and laid it on my new bed. I pulled the tunic over my black shirt and pants and fastened the belt. I opened the door to leave and bumped right into someone on the other side. I assumed it was Jade after seeing a flash of white but my stomach sank when I looked into those wide orange eyes.
“Oh, it’s you.” We said in unison. I could feel the tension in the air as we stared at each other in awkward silence. After what felt like an eternity, Luna cleared her throat.
“I was just looking for one of Prince Klenn’s retainers”
‘Jade? You just missed her, she went that way’ is what I could have said, probably what I should have said. But no. I crossed my arms and leaned against the door frame.
“So you’re not just here to check on me then? Make sure I’m not still on my dark path?” I taunted. Luna narrowed her eyes at that. She stepped forward and leaned down, our noses nearly touching. It took all my willpower not to step back or look away.
“I do not know what Prince Aegean saw in you when he made his selection, I certainly don’t see it. But know this Adara, if you lay a single claw on that boy, I will relish cutting. you. down.” she whipped around before I could muster a response and stalked down the hall, her long white tail lashing behind her.
