Did anybody else know about this tradition of beating women with a cow horn on their butt on an island in north west Germany?
It's called Klaasohm and takes place every 5. december on the island Birkum. They try to keep it on the down low (for example intimidating journalists when they realize you're filming) or say its tradition nothings wrong with it. Even tho some women mention bruises and can't even sit for a few days. You can't even protest against it as up to 3 men may hold you down. And when you try to defend yourself you're branded a killjoy (or in case of hitting one back in the turmoil called a psycho).
When someone gives an interview they often take back their interview afterwards or won't even speak to outsiders at all. Those who do give one are often censored to be safe.
Lots of men who live on the main land come only for this day back to the island.
In this documentary I watched their police and mayor won't even give a public statement, declining any interview.
I think more people should know about this.

there is a very similar tradition on Ameland, a West Frisian island in the North Sea that belongs to the Netherlands; there is a documentary from last year titled "Sunneklaas-hooligans rijden PowNed van de weg in Ameland!" (the automatically translated subtitles are good enough to follow along if you don't speak Dutch)
Thank you!
I’ve stumbled upon some mentions of Ameland on twitter but wasn’t sure if the islands just got mixed because they, too, interfered with journalists trying to investigate!
Small closed-off communities separated from the mainland is no joke I see.
Here the video if anyone else is interested
youtube
On the other note I’m using this ask to post the fact that I was reading and researching all these tradition for two days and only just realised what must have inspired The Purge movie franchise. The Krampus festivals etc!

It is so so scary to know that there is a tradition similar to The Purge, where men are allowed to hit women with cow horns, as often and brutal as they want, without consequences. The women can't escape as they get held down by other men. And this is even already taught to the kids. Little boys will do this to girls.
#dragon's stupid thoughts#it's the time of year again when it is celebrated#talking about the Klaasohm in Borkum.#which is in germany.#they kept that tradion in secret and away from the public because OBVIOUSLY IT'S VERY WRONG#thankfully some journalists made a long video report and it's getting public now#this shit is so so scary#I'm so thankful that I don't live there

Today I found out there's a Christmas tradition in Germany that encourage violence against women. The article said "enables" but I think "encourage" is the more correct word here, you'll get it once you read the article. So basically the festival features masked men known as "Klaasohm" that run after women and smacking their bottom with cow horn.
According to the article, the association that organise the tradition will ban any violence towards women, but please know that this tradition has been going on for 200 years. The association had rejected request of transparency and tried to obstruct media coverage. People who are against it are pressured to stay silent.
Also apparently according to discussions on the internet this isn't the only tradition that has violence towards woman in it, but most of them take place in rural areas. The exposing of the Klaasohm tradition could potentially lead to the much-needed uncovering of similar practices.

Just so you know what else is currently happening as I have not seen any English speaking articles about it:
On Friday a report by a state TV station was released about the "klaasohm" fest on the island Borkum (Borkum is a small island of the German North Sea Coast). The festival is mostly unknown to people not from the island as the organizers make it very clear that they don't want it to be public knowledge. They cite that outsiders always have a hard time understanding local tradition and by not posting about it on social media or talking about it in general keeps the festival "safe". Last year some journalists went there to observe the festival and this is what they gathered: no one wants to talk about it. The mayor, the police, the organizers, the locals, no one. Some brave souls mustered the courage to share the experience but as a condition for their knowledge they wanted absolute anonymity to prevent retaliation. And the festival itself is not different.
The klaasohm festival is on the 5th of December and there 3 young members of the local fraternity organisation (which only accepts men) are chosen to be klaasohm (and wear special costumes assuring anonymity and looking like a winter demon). A fourth one gets to be the wiefke (and dresses up as a women). First the klaasohms have to do ritual combat to clear the hierarchy (only members of the fraternity are allowed to witness) and when that's finished they are going from hous to house hunting women. If they find a woman or teen girl outside of their home (like on the street or in a bar) that night they capture, restrain and beat her with a cow horn. The beating is not ritualised, though the strikes are concentrated on the butt and thigh, and the strikes can be so hard that the women and girls have bruises and hematomes for days afterwards. The anonymous source state that even if they begged to not be beaten they were striked regardless and after it happened they were just left sobbing on the street all by themselves. During the filming of the 2023 Klaasohm the journalists were also threatened to be beaten and chased to their hotel room by some locals.
No official of any kind wants to speak about it apart from saying that it's an old tradition and it's important for the community identity of the Borkum people. The locals do not dare to speak against it as most of them are in favour and they don't want to be excluded from their community.
It is genuinely frightening that theses kinds of "festivals" are still possible and other communities showed how they can be modernized. The krampus nights in Austria for instance have a clear system in which bystanders can consent to the ritual beating, the krampus's have numbers so you know who to report if things get out of hand, and everyone agrees that the line is drawn at physical harm.
Right now the outcry in Germany is pretty big but I think this archaic and misogynistic tradition should be known to everybody.

i saw the strg_f documentary about klaasohm and what i noticed: in the one post from this boys club they said that no photos may be taken or anything posted on social media. but in the first or second i'll call it "beating" that was then shown, photos were obviously taken !with flash! so clearly photos and probably videos are being taken after all - where do you think they end up? private group chat to get horny?
From what I’ve read I got the idea that they forbid taking photos only of the fight for the annual leader before the “celebrations” begin. I’m m 100% sure there is a group chat and I wish the police would get their hands on it. //
