Yamanaka Iyoko - Biography

Yamanaka Iyoko - is born to a Yamanaka father and an Akimichi mother. Her grandfather is none other than Akimichi Torifu - a notable member of the noble Akimichi clan. Iyoko was taught the secret jutsu technique of both clans. However, the Yamanaka jutsu was something she couldn’t fully master, instead she dedicated her time and energy in perfecting the secret jutsu technique from her mother’s side of the family. 

Before she entered the Ninja Academy, she was often picked on by other children for her weight. It made her determined to show them what she was made of, what all that weight stood for; a proud and strong girl who would someday outshine all of them. With this attitude she enrolled in the Ninja Academy and graduated second top of her class. She couldn’t be more proud. 

Being a fresh genin proved to be more difficult than she expected it to be, her two teammates were more compatible with each other than she was. It frustrated her and this caused a fraction between the three. Their teamwork suffered under her stubbornness. Iyoko refused to admit she was at fault and blamed the other two for sabotaging her progress. Eventually her lack of teamwork led to the death of her teammate Koushi. Ignoring her sensei’s orders to retreat and call for backup, Iyoko was caught by enemy fire she couldn’t escape from. Koushi used herself as a shield while protecting Iyoko. The enemies were taken care of when backup arrived with Iyoko’s other teammate, Kiyomi, who saw her sitting while holding Koushi. 

As expected from their jounin-sensei, she took full responsibility for the death of her student and retired as a genin-sensei. The team was disbanded and Iyoko was sent back to the Ninja Academy. Kiyomi couldn’t forgive Iyoko and hated her for being given a second chance. From thereon they tried to avoid each other as much as possible. Koushi’s death left its mark on all of them in different ways. It gave Iyoko strength to better herself and work extra hard in the areas she lacked during her time as a genin. Often she visited her late-teammates grave and told of her progress. Never again would she make the same mistake. 

The next following year Iyoko graduated from the Ninja Academy, and this time she would do things differently - teamwork, teamwork and teamwork. It became her ninja way; no teamwork, no success. Iyoko’s previews genin experience showed, taking the initiative in most cases. Their training was put on hold after their jounin-sensei joined the war. During the war, all of the genin teams came together and formed a small army of their own by protecting their village from invaders and the sort. Their leader was none other than Sarutobi Konohamaru. 

After the war was won, they went into a new age under the guidance of their new Hokage, Hatake Kakashi. Iyoko and her genin team were doing well and together they entered the chuunin exams. The first time she participated in the chuunin exams, she didn’t make it to chuunin while her other two teammates did. It took another three years before she was promoted to chuunin. As a chuunin she was still with her team and they were doing well together. In her mid-twenties she was promoted to jounin and couldn’t be more proud. 

Being a jounin made her cross paths with Kiyomi again who was a full-fledged ANBU. The contrast between the two couldn’t be more obvious, Iyoko turned her life around to do better, Kiyomi on the other hand turned into an emotionless weapon for the village to be wheeled. It saddened her to see Kiyomi like that, but the death of their late-teammate struck them in opposite ways. There was nothing she could do to make it better, all she could do was to not fall for the same mistakes which led to the event which shaped their lives for good. 

Personality - Iyoko is confident in who she is and what she stands for. Her confidence made her liked or disliked among people. She’s an outspoken person who doesn’t beat around the bush. Blunt and sometimes insensitive to people who are insecure, Iyoko isn’t always tactful - a trait which can be damaging even though she doesn’t mean to. Her stubbornness not helping her either when confronted with being insensitive. It’s her pride that she is often in the way. This doesn’t mean she’s blind to her mistakes and will apologise if needs be.
