hi!! whump questions 1, 24, 25 please :)

1: what is my favorite whump to write?

MAN that's a hard question. I have so many favorites but I have to say one of my absolute favorite things is to shoot a character. there's so many different contexts that can happen and a million variations on where the wound is, how close of a range, how severe it is, etc etc etc. if nobody got me I know gunshot wounds got me 🔥💯

24: do I have any whump pet peeves? things that just bug me when I see them in fanfic?

I think the most egregious is when romantic relationships are written with more care than platonic relationships. dont get me wrong this bothers me in anything but specifically in a whump context it's a bit of a downer. I've read fic before where characters are in comas, and the only character who really seems to care out of the entire close knit found family group is.......their romantic partner. nevermind that the whole GROUP is supposed to be close friends/family and so they would ALL be distressed at their friend being in a coma. like smh if someone only wants to write the romantic aspects of a whump scenario (which is entirely fair and valid) then I would rather they don't even include the other characters than write them as uncaring and ooc. yk??????

25: any advice or wisdom to share with other whump writers?

I only really have 2 pieces of advice to offer and I don't consider myself a professional or any high caliber writer so take it or leave it:

1: enjoying and writing whump is morally neutral. there is nothing wrong with imagining insanely fucked up scenarios where terrible things happen, because these things are fictional and nobody in real life who is really alive and existing is getting hurt. you're playing with dolls. don't be ashamed of it.

2: have fun! there's some really great uplifting whump communities here on tumblr that you can get involved in. one of my favorite things about writing whump is the brainstorming sessions I have with my friends where we keep "yes, and"ing each other back and forth. writing is a lot of fun on its own, but the community makes or breaks the experience.

I don't have that many plans—I rarely even plan to read one book, preferring to let my reading be a pleasant surprise treat for myself, not an Expectation I Have To Fulfill. that said, I do have some books and things that I think would be fun to read this year!

The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison! I do actually plan to read this one when it comes out in March—I've already preordered the audiobook. I love the Goblin Emperor and Cemeteries of Amalo series to bits and I'm SO hyped for the third book. Celehar my darlingest beloved.

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson—this is a reread! I discovered Housekeeping through a college women's literature class and really enjoyed it. It's more Literary (TM) than my usual tastes, and would be a good way to challenge myself a little.

An Introduction to Haiku, an anthology with translations and commentary by Harold G. Henderson. I'm already reading this, out of order and patchily <333

The two Tim Drake as Robin comics collections a dear friend got for me recently: ROBIN: REBORN and ROBIN: TRIUMPHANT !! I'm counting them as one book lol

the Damage solo! I want to read Damage but I've been too caught up in other things to settle down and read them all the way through. @isfjmel-phleg I'm so sorry. RIP.

The Mob Psycho 100 Fanbook by ONE! It has no translation into English but that's a fun challenge. I will definitely not just read it all the way through, but I might dabble and translate a few pages. Particularly curious about the Shou lore 👀

You Are a Sacred Place by Madeleine Jubilee Saito (another pre-ordered book)! And another book that will challenge my usual reading habits—it's a series of meditative four-panel watercolor comics, and I hope to really spend some good time with it.

This summer would be a good time to reread the JJBA spinoff novel Purple Haze Feedback! It would also be a really good time to read Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak, which would be new to me :]

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer!! I've read 2 chapters and want to read the rest.

oh yeah also, this isn't a Novel or even a Book really, but I want to give the webtoon Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint another try! It's really dark and would make a fun change of pace >:D
