This reminds me of kiteboarding.

A lot of kite borders have surfed or used to surf. A lot of them have or used to or still windsurf. The culture is much different, though. There's only so much room on so many waves, so if you're a surfer, you paddle out and you wait in line and you don't take somebody else's turn on a wave, unless you're an asshole, more people in your area surfing are annoying because they take up valuable real estate. "Locals only" was a slogan among the surfers when I was in high school in the late '80s.

Meanwhile, with kiteboarding, you always want somebody else to help launch and land your kite; it's not essential or necessary, but it is a lot easier and probably easier on the kite too. You talk to other people about location, about conditions. Once you start riding you ride out into the ocean and you can be clear of everybody else and so you're not worried about territory. If you have some kind of tangle with somebody it's just as bad or risky for you as it is for them; so it's in everybody's interests to avoid getting tangled or crashing or whatever. Not only that, but nobody wants anything bad to happen. Nobody wants somebody to get hurt, including kiteboarders but also anybody else who's around. We're all kind of vaguely worried that it could be made illegal, or just banned from whatever beach you're at.

And on top of all of that, you're in a very specific kind of club. Most of the time, with a club, you put your meetings on the calendar, you pay your dues, you show up to meetings, there's an organizational structure, all of that stuff is going on simultaneously. That's a lot of overhead for just talking about fish or something. Books. I don't know, whatever your club is. When you're a kiteboarder you're kind of in a club that doesn't have any of that stuff and just forms organically. After you ride for a little while, you know where the conditions are good based on the wind direction and logistics; so you're paying attention to the weather all the time, and when you have time and the weather is right, you just show up at a place, and oh look at that, all your buddies are there. You all have something to talk about, you all have stuff to help each other with, you're all happy to see each other because oh here's a guy that can help you out and also he may know something you don't, you're excited to share information about conditions: "Bunch of surfers over there; stay away. Bunch of fishermen over by the pier, so give it some extra leeway. Wind about to drop off around 2:00 p.m. I saw some whales here once! Keep your eyes open!"

On the whole it's a fantastic and much different experience from being a surfer or fishing off a pier with a bunch of other people. You're surrounded by these other groups of people participating in activities, and yet there's something really special about it, something almost miraculous that adds to the whole experience, WHICH IS AMAZING TO BEGIN WITH
