Meet Me at the Farmers Market! - 6. All In
A Farmers Market! Joel AU x Confident! Plus Sized! F! Reader
Series Masterlist
Series Summary: What does a Contractor do in his spare time? Sell his wood carvings at the Saturday Farmers Market, of course! A Grumpy x Sunshine Joel Miller series collective of one-shots.
Chapter Rating: T
Word Count: 1K
Warnings: Mentions of a minor character death
Summary: A FaceTime call changes everything. This story takes place one year after the events of pt.1.
A/N: I knew when I first started to write for this series that I was always going to include Ellie, even if this series is based in a universe where the outbreak does not happen. I did fudge the ages a bit in regards to Sarah - she's in grad school in my universe in 2023, and Ellie is roughly about the same age she is in the game/series.
The point is, Ellie was always going to be endgame. This week's offering is a short one, but a small introduction to the inevitability of Ellie. It does touch upon a minor character passing away, so if you are not down with it, please move along.
Also. Sorry for the angst. I have a lot of plans for Christmas this year, so don't worry - It just needed a bit of a setup.
"Hey, Joel, remember when I told you about my best friend, Anna?"
Joel glances up from his book, reading glasses perched on his nose, a curious frown on his face. "Yeah? She's the one with—"
"Cancer," you interject, swiftly wiping your hands on your apron. You wave them in the air awkwardly, shaking your head as you nervously continue prepping dinner. Joel gives you a concerned look, raising an eyebrow as you flit around the kitchen. "Listen—she called me yesterday while I was at the nursery... she doesn't have much time left, and she wanted me to see her before—"
"I get it," Joel murmurs, dog-earing his place in the book and placing it on the coffee table. He walks over to you, enveloping you in an embrace, resting his chin on top of your head. "I'm sorry, baby," he whispers. "I know how much she means to you, it's fucked up."
You close your eyes, nodding silently, the tears you've been holding back begging for release. "Do you think you could come with me? To Washington? I really don't want to do this alone."
"Absolutely, baby. Anything. When do we need to leave?"
"Is tomorrow too soon?"
Joel sighs, the rumble resonating within you. "I'll have to check with Tommy, but I'm sure he'd do anything for you," he shoots you a look you can't quite read. "Come on, let's get packing."
﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏
The drive to Fred Hutch Cancer Center is quiet, with Joel taking the wheel despite your protests. "No matter where we are, I'll be the one drivin'," he scolds, shooing you as he places luggage into the trunk. Once inside, Joel connects your phone to Carplay, insisting that listening to Fleet Foxes is good for the soul. He sings along to 'Blue Ridge Mountain' and reaches for your hand across the console, his thumb soothing your skin. "Are you nervous, baby?"
"No."
"... do you want to talk about it?"
"Talk to me about that job on Smith Street," you silently plead, desperately wanting to change the topic.
The plane ride from Austin-Bergstrom to Seatac, despite being only a few hours, was already harrowing enough. Your body refused to calm down, the anxiety about the inevitability of Anna's loss keeping you up for days after that fateful call. This is so incredibly fucked up, you cry to her as you refuse to meet her eyes through FaceTime, the vision of her frail body breaking your heart. You don't deserve this. What about Ellie? How has she been taking this?
Ellie. Your headstrong, brilliant goddaughter, your one true regret after moving to Austin. You left her high and dry, in her words, tears streaming down her face as she FaceTimes you in a rage after finding out you had abandoned your life in Seattle for Austin, Texas. "How could you just up and leave? Don't you care about me? What about Mom? How could you?!" she yells at you through the phone. "You promised her, you know? You promised me, Sunflower."
You shake your head, pulling yourself from the memory, suddenly realizing you haven't been completely forthcoming about all the reasons for this impromptu trip. "Joel, I need to tell you something."
"What is it, baby?"
"Anna has a daughter. She called me because-"
"Sunflower." He pulls over to the side of the interstate suddenly, his entire body turning to face you, a concerned look on his face. "Don't tell me-"
"When the time comes, I have to be there for her. For Ellie. I... I promised," you sadly whisper. "It's Anna's dying wish."
"... but what does that mean for us?" Joel worriedly replies, his face contorting into something resembling pain, sadness, and regret bundled up into one. It's unnerving, seeing him like this. "Are you planning on moving back here?"
"Joel, no. I... I know that I've only moved in a few months ago, and the whole prospect of promising something so monumental with your terminally ill best friend should have been something I was upfront with you about before getting serious with you, but..." You grasp his hands in yours. "Well, that's why I wanted you to come with me. I wanted you to meet her. She's an amazing kid, and I'll vouch for her for life."
"Baby," he stutters, his eyes silently pleading with yours. "I know I promised that I'll do anything for you, but this... this is a hard ask. I'm old, hell, Sarah's already in grad school... how old is she? I don't know if I'm ready to have another kid around-"
"She's fifteen, and I know, Joel. I-"
"This changes everything, Sunflower. Hell, I didn't want to come off too strong, but..."
"I know, and I'm-"
"I was going to ask you to marry me," he interjects, his bittersweet smile tugging at your heart. "Planned it for this weekend, before... having to come here. You're everything to me, baby. I don't want anyone else... and if that means rolling with whatever life throws our way, then... I'm all in."
"Seriously?"
"Yes," he sighs deeply. "Till death do us part, right?" He gives you a small smile, planting a kiss on your forehead. "Listen, I get that Anna means a lot to you, and promises like that aren't ones we want to break. So, what's important to you is important to me." He takes a deep breath, revving up the ignition as he merges back onto the interstate. "I love you, okay?"
"Okay. I love you too, Joel. A lot. Ask me again, once we figure this out."
"Okay." Joel grins, his eyes locked on the road ahead. "Alright. Tell me about Ellie."

I flew to Seattle on a 7 AM flight and then 7 PM back. We got pretty much everything done, including spending a couple of hours at Home Depot finalizing the kitchen cabinets and the countertops. Our kitchen designer was a trip -we probably could’ve gotten it done in a lot less time but he had a lot of stories to tell and a lot of details to provide, at one point I had this picture in my mind of him being the Dwight Schrute of stainless steel sinks and I started giggling so hard I couldn’t stop. He’s a big personality, but he also knows his business and was super helpful, we got a big discount due to buying the cabinets and the countertops together and having them do the installation. I had absolutely no idea about everything that is involved with cabinetry and all of the different choices. It’s a lot. I ended up making a couple of decisions that give me a ton more storage in the kitchen, which is important for a rental.
I’m so glad the contractor pushed us to do the deck – it makes the space look so much bigger already and it’s going be so much more usable. We have three options for the fireplace slab, and a schedule across the next nine weeks to get everything installed. The structural engineer comes on Saturday so we can make decisions about the upper unit in a few weeks.
I’m so glad I am making these changes, this is such a special place.
I also got a ton of work done on the plane and at the airport -it will be a big busy day today but I’m feeling less behind.

[to the tune of Tom Cardy's Big Breakfast]
I don't regret ordering the BIG BATH TUB I know I'll feel so good when I'm... INSIDE THE BIG BATH TUB
OKAY SO if you've read anything I've ever written you might be aware that I have a deep and abiding love of a Big Bathtub. Tragically, this was something I did not have access to in my personal life, as the house we bought had a baby tub for babies who don't like baths. Seriously, this thing was 15" tall on the outside and maybe had 12" of soaking depth if you were lucky. I still took baths, but I complained about it the whole time.
No more.
Now I have Big Bathtub!!!! Look at it! LOOK AT IT!!! I can get my boobs AND my knees underwater at the same time! I'm gonna be making cauldrons of lady soup in there! My 6'1" wife is gonna be able to take baths and be comfortable!
If you can't find me, look for me in the Big Bathtub.
(Don't look for me.)
"Scarlett!" I hear you (a rhetorical device) saying, "I love that for you, but I am also jealous! How do I get a Big Bathtub of my very own?"
Well, my friend, if there's one thing I love more than Big Bathtub, it is oversharing about home improvement projects.
SPECIFIC MONEY TALK TO FOLLOW
Given how absolutely fucking impossible it is to find any guidance online about how much this shit costs when you're just starting the research, I'll start here: This cost us $11,466.16 and took two days to install. We live in a very high COL area, and from what other research I did and estimates we got, $10-12k was about what we could expect to pay for a new bathtub and shower surround that wasn't The Same Fiberglass Shit We Already Had, AND we would have had to bring in multiple contractors.
Some necessary background: My wife and I bought our house about eleven years ago, when house prices in Seattle were at a historic low. My mom gifted us money for the down payment, which was a huge privilege, but if she gifted us the same amount of money now it would buy us precisely jack and shit. We have the stability we have due to a rare combination of privilege and luck, and I am grateful for it literally every day.
The incredibly low price we bought this house at also allowed us to manage to stay afloat through our last seven-ish years of chronic under-employment. I won't get deeply into the details, but we spent a lot of time in a place where buying myself a package of nice butter was a luxury I had to plan for. A little over a year ago my wife got a really good job (after a year of unemployment) and this summer I got a much-overdue promotion at my day job and a significant raise! Between those two things, we've finally been in a place where we can save money for house projects instead of going into debt for them, which still seems like a fucking miracle! It hasn't gotten old yet! I don't know if it ever will!
Flush on that success, earlier this this fall I got quotes for an addition on the house (something we've wanted almost since we moved in, since it's 800 square feet and has just the one tiny bathroom) and learned it would cost AT LEAST 150% MORE than we paid for this house in the first place!!! Like we could buy a whole-ass house in a cheaper area for the cost of adding on to this one! HAHAHAHA NO!! 😭😬
After a couple days of crushing disappointment I decided this meant we could pursue smaller improvements to make the house we have into a house we love, and first on the list was Big Bathtub!
Being generally handy people (ask about the shed my wife built sometime) we looked at buying a nice tub at a showroom and having a plumber install it, but plumbers don't install shower surrounds. Okay, so we figured we could probably install a shower surround? And my dad (a retired general contractor) could help? But this isn't a kitchen counter, this is a bathroom, and in this house we don't fuck with stuff that need waterproofing. We decided we wanted someone who could handle the whole thing, so I requested quotes from remodel contractors but they all told me my project was too small!
Enter Bath Planet. They're a one-stop shop that does custom full bath surround installs with a ton of options. The sales guy who did the estimate had color and material samples with him and dug through all the options to get me the deepest bathtub possible. This sucker's 22" tall! The cost included wrapping the entire window so the sill would be waterproof! If there was damage to the subfloor, they'd repair it before installing the tub at no additional cost! The warranty is really good!
(Oh man I've become such an adult.)
Not gonna lie, the quoted price was 😬😬😬 when he was done, but we couldn't argue with the quality or convenience and we were looking at a cost of close to $7k if we bought a big tub, had a plumber installed it, and then DIYed the surround (with no guarantees about how long that would make our only bathroom unusable!) so we bit the bullet and put down a deposit.
In related news, my wife and I are giving each other very few presents this Christmas, since the tub was our main gift 😂 Our savings are... Very depleted right now, so we're gonna have to hunker down for a few months to rebuild before we can think about any other house projects or expensive fun stuff, but what we lack in money, we make up for in bathtub!
As far as the timeline went, we got the initial quote on 9/20, put down our deposit that day, and then the install happened over 12/6 and 12/7. The installer was great, the work happened exactly as it was supposed to, and now we have BIG BATHTUB.
This was a wall of text, I know! If anyone has questions I didn't answer here, though, I'm happy to answer them. It's so rough trying to find home reno information out on the wide internet, and contractor websites are worse than useless for the purpose.
Meanwhile, I will be in the Big Bathtub.

From Dream to Design: Transforming Kitchen Remodeling Ideas into Stunning Plans
When it comes to kitchen remodeling, the journey from concept to reality is an exciting process that transforms your kitchen into a space that works for your needs and style. Whether you’re looking to update outdated features, expand functionality, or completely overhaul the layout, creating a solid plan is key to making your kitchen remodeling dreams come true.
1. Start with Inspiration: Where to Begin?
Every great kitchen remodel begins with inspiration. Perhaps you’ve been scrolling through Pinterest or browsing home design magazines, gathering images that spark your creativity. But to turn those ideas into something actionable, you need to dive deeper. What specific elements in those photos appeal to you? Is it the color scheme, the layout, or the materials? Narrowing down your vision is the first step in ensuring that your kitchen remodel reflects your personality and lifestyle.
2. Defining Your Goals: Why Are You Remodeling?
Understanding the "why" behind your kitchen remodel is crucial. Are you updating your kitchen to increase the value of your home before selling? Or do you need more space and better functionality for your family’s everyday needs? Maybe you're interested in creating a sustainable, eco-friendly kitchen. Defining your goals will help guide every decision along the way, from choosing materials to selecting the right appliances.
3. Budgeting for Your Kitchen Remodel
As with any home renovation, setting a realistic budget is essential. Kitchen remodeling can be an investment, and it’s important to allocate funds for materials, labor, and any unexpected expenses that may arise. Don’t forget to factor in costs for professional services like designers or contractors if needed. A clear budget ensures that you can create a beautiful, functional kitchen without overspending.
4. Crafting a Detailed Plan: The Roadmap to Your Dream Kitchen
Once your goals and budget are in place, it's time to turn your ideas into detailed plans. This is where the magic happens! Whether you’re working with a designer or taking on the task yourself, layout and functionality are key considerations. Think about how you use your kitchen on a daily basis—what features would improve your cooking experience? Should you include an island, increase storage with cabinets, or opt for modern appliances?
Planning also involves selecting the right materials that fit both your aesthetic and functional needs. Whether you’re opting for marble countertops, eco-friendly cabinetry, or high-tech appliances, be sure to choose materials that suit your lifestyle.
5. The Final Touches: Personalizing Your New Space
After the heavy lifting is done, the fun part begins: adding the final touches to your remodeled kitchen. This is when you can incorporate personal style, whether it's through unique light fixtures, decorative backsplashes, or custom shelving. These small details bring the space together and make it feel truly yours.
Conclusion
Turning your kitchen remodeling ideas into plans is a rewarding process that requires time, effort, and a clear vision. By starting with inspiration, defining your goals, sticking to a budget, and carefully planning the details, you can create a kitchen that’s not only functional but also beautiful. The journey from dream to design is a fulfilling one—watching your ideas come to life will be worth every step.
Are you ready to begin your kitchen transformation? Let’s make those remodeling dreams a reality together!

Transforming Spaces with Home Remodeling Contractors in Bellevue WA
Home remodeling is an exciting endeavor that can significantly enhance the functionality and aesthetic appeal of a home. In Bellevue, WA, homeowners often seek to improve their living spaces, whether it's through a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or even a complete home makeover. This bustling city, known for its stunning views of the Cascade Mountains and proximity to Seattle, has a growing community of skilled home remodeling contractors in Bellevue WA who can bring homeowners' visions to life.
The demand for home remodeling has been on the rise in Bellevue, driven by several factors. First, the real estate market in the area is robust, with many families looking to invest in their homes rather than moving. Remodeling can increase property value, making it a smart financial decision. Additionally, as lifestyles evolve, so do the needs of homeowners. Whether it's creating more open space for entertaining, adding a home office, or modernizing outdated features, renovations are often necessary to keep up with changing demands.
When choosing a remodeling contractor in Bellevue, it’s essential to consider various factors to ensure that the project runs smoothly and meets expectations. Homeowners should begin by conducting thorough research to find potential contractors with a strong reputation. Online reviews, testimonials, and referrals from friends or family can provide valuable insights into a contractor's reliability and quality of work. Websites and social media platforms can also showcase a contractor’s previous projects, allowing homeowners to gauge their style and craftsmanship.
Communication is another critical aspect of a successful remodeling project. Homeowners should look for contractors who prioritize open and transparent dialogue. Discussing project timelines, budgets, and design ideas early on can help avoid misunderstandings later. A good contractor will listen to the homeowner's needs and collaborate to develop a plan that aligns with their vision. Establishing a positive working relationship with the contractor can contribute to a more enjoyable and productive remodeling experience.
Once homeowners have narrowed down their options, it is crucial to schedule consultations with potential contractors. This initial meeting is an opportunity to discuss the scope of the project, ask questions, and assess the contractor’s expertise. During the consultation, homeowners should inquire about the contractor’s experience with similar projects, their design process, and the materials they typically use. Understanding the contractor's approach to project management, including how they handle permits, inspections, and subcontractors, can provide additional peace of mind.
In Bellevue, many homeowners prefer to work with contractors who emphasize sustainability and energy efficiency in their remodeling projects. The Pacific Northwest is known for its environmental consciousness, and many contractors have adopted eco-friendly practices. This can include using sustainable materials, implementing energy-efficient appliances, and incorporating renewable energy sources. By choosing a contractor who prioritizes these practices, homeowners can reduce their carbon footprint while enhancing the comfort and efficiency of their homes.
Another aspect to consider is the contractor's ability to adapt to the unique architectural styles present in Bellevue. The city boasts a mix of modern, traditional, and mid-century homes, each requiring different approaches to remodeling. A skilled contractor will understand the nuances of these styles and work to enhance the home’s character while integrating contemporary design elements. This balance can create a harmonious blend of old and new, appealing to both homeowners and potential buyers.
Cost is, of course, a significant factor in any remodeling project. Homeowners should establish a budget before beginning the process and communicate it clearly to their chosen contractor. A reputable contractor will work within the budget while providing realistic expectations regarding what can be achieved. They should provide a detailed estimate that outlines the costs associated with materials, labor, and any other potential expenses. Being upfront about finances can help avoid unexpected surprises down the line.
As the remodeling process begins, homeowners should stay engaged and informed. Regular check-ins with the contractor can help ensure that the project is progressing according to the established timeline and budget. It's also an opportunity to address any concerns or modifications that may arise. A successful remodeling project requires flexibility and collaboration, and maintaining open lines of communication is essential.
The remodeling process can be disruptive to daily life, especially for larger projects. Homeowners should prepare for this disruption by creating a temporary living space if necessary. For instance, if the kitchen is being remodeled, setting up a makeshift kitchen in another area of the home can make day-to-day living more manageable. Being prepared for the realities of a remodel can help reduce stress and create a more positive experience.
Once the project is complete, homeowners will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor. A well-executed remodel not only enhances the beauty and functionality of a home but also increases its market value. Whether it’s a sleek new kitchen, a luxurious bathroom, or a beautifully finished basement, the results of a remodeling project can have a lasting impact on the home and its occupants.
