As a person who knows nothing about Islam, I gotta ask - what's the deal with the giant black cube?

Oh man I love talking about our cube! The cube is called the Kaaba, which means ‘the cube’. It is very holy (you are meant to be visualising it as a sort of aiming point every time you pray) but it isn’t secret, and a lot of people assume it is inherently mysterious.

So many pre-Islamic Arabian cities, including Mecca, had a cube. These served as public shrines and housed idols of the pagan gods of that city. A lot of them also housed or had embedded into them meteorites, because something falling from the sky is pretty easy to worship.

Our cube, the cube, is believed to be the site where way back in the day Ibrahim (Abraham, if you want) built a house of worship to God. Over time as monotheism lost out to pagan polytheism its original purpose was lost and people use it as a shrine and copy the form of that shrine elsewhere.

For any Muslim narrative, one of the things that Muhammad does as a prophet is to kick Arabia back onto the monotheism from which it had fallen away (into ignorance, jahiliyyah). So when Muhammad re-enters Mecca he goes to the Kaaba and smashes all the idols inside with a staff while saying that ‘truth has come and falsehood has vanished’ - in some tellings of this he preserves a statue of the infant Jesus and Mary but places it outside. What happens next is a kind of religious compromise where he Islamifies (well, God does, but he’s the one telling Muhammad what to do) bits of the Meccan pagan religion. So the cube stays, the meteorite in it, a black stone, stays, and the Meccan fertility rite of tawaf where people circled the cube naked gets changed so you have to wear clothes and it isn’t horny any more. A mosque is built up around it. Eventually the direction you face during prayer is changed from towards Jerusalem to towards the Kaaba. And from then until now Islamic practice in relation to the cube has not really changed.

FUN CUBE FACTS

It’s not the same building Ibrahim built or the same building Muhammad resanctified. It has fallen down in earthquakes or been destroyed with catapults an alarming number of times and then just rebuilt in a very practical way. The current incarnation dates back to 1626.

It’s not black - in high winds or when it’s being changed, which it is yearly, you can see under the black and gold cloth covering, the kiswah, and see the granite blocks underneath:

The kiswah also doesn’t have to be black. It’s a pretty firmly established tradition now but it’s been red, green and white at various times.

It has an inside. There’s nothing secret about it like the Holy of Holies, every year a bunch of dignitaries get to go in and clean it. There’s nothing material important in there, that being sort of the point:

The little cabinet has cleaning supplies, perfumes and the like. If you pray inside the Kaaba you can face in any direction, plus I like to imagine you unlock a fun little achievement.

Essential Islam: The Ka’aba

The Ka'aba (literally "the cube" in Arabic) is an ancient stone structure that was built and re-built by prophets as a house of monotheistic worship. It is located inside the Grand Mosque in Makkah (Mecca) Saudi Arabia. The Ka'aba is considered the center of the Muslim world and is a unifying focal point for Islamic worship. When Muslims complete the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca), the ritual includes circling the Ka'aba.

Description

The Ka'aba is a semi-cubic building that stands about 15 meters (49 feet) high and 10-12 meters (33 to 39 feet) wide. It is an ancient, simple structure made of granite. The inside floor is clad with marble and limestone, and the interior walls are tiles with white marble up to the halfway point. In the southeast corner, a black meteorite (the "Black Stone") is embedded in a silver frame. Stairs on the north side lead to a door that allows entry to the interior, which is hollow and empty. The Ka'aba is covered with a kiswah, a black silk cloth which is embroidered in gold with verses from the Quran. The kiswah is restored and replaced once each year

History

According to the Quran, the Ka'aba was built by the prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael as a house of monotheistic worship. However, by the time of Muhammad, the Ka'aba had been taken over by pagan Arabs to house their numerous tribal gods. In 630 A.D., Muhammad and his followers took over leadership of Mecca after years of persecution. Muhammad destroyed the idols inside the Ka'aba and re-dedicated it as a house of monotheistic worship.

The Ka'aba was damaged several times after Mohammad's death, and with each repair, it took on an altered appearance. In 1629, for example, heavy flooding caused the foundations to collapse, necessitating a complete reconstruction. The Ka'aba has not changed since then, but historical records are vague, and it is impossible to know if the current structure closely resembles the Ka'aba of Mohammad's time.

Role in Muslim Worship

It should be noted that Muslims do not worship the Ka'aba and its environs, as some people believe. Instead, it serves as a focal and unifying point among the Muslim people. During daily prayers, Muslims face toward the Ka'aba from wherever they are in the world (this is known as "facing the qiblah"). During the annual pilgrimage (Hajj), Muslims walk around the Ka'aba in a counter-clockwise direction (a ritual known as tawaf). Each year upwards of two million Muslims may circle the Ka'ba for five days during the Hajj.

Until recently, the Ka'aba was open twice a week, and any Muslim visiting Makka (Mecca) could enter it. Now, however, the Ka'aba is open only twice a year for cleaning, at which time just invited dignitaries can enter it.

Now I want to tell about National monument of Saudian Arabic Kaaba,also spelled Ka’bah, small shrine located near the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca.

The cube-shaped structure is roughly 15 metreshigh, and it is about 45 metres at its base. Constructed of gray stone and marble, it is oriented so that its corners roughly correspond to the points of the compass.The interior contains nothing but the three pillars supporting the roof and a number of suspended silver and gold lamps. During most of the year the Kaaba is covered with an enormous cloth of black brocade, the kiswah.

I think this is interesting for other foreign people to visit. My recommendation for others to go there are and to see the real spectacular monument.

Architecturally speaking, the Kaaba is a structure of about 15 metres high while its base is roughly 10 x 14 metres. The placing of the building is done in such a manner that the corners of the building roughly indicate the four directions of a compass. The building features throughout its entire construction grey marble and stone giving it its dark and contrasting appeal.

On the inside, three pillars support the roof while silver and gold lamps hang from the ceiling. While the structure itself is already very interesting and a work of art, what is adding to its appeal is the fact that for most parts of the year, the entire building is completely covered in cloth. A large cloth of black brocade, called a kiswah cover protects the entire building and is making the times when it is open to see and for artists to capture the essence of the structure, rather limited.

Yet, the true significance of the Kaaba is not set in its structure but in what it represents in the Muslim religion. The location of the Kaaba is near the Black Stone of Mecca, which is now only a fractured structure of broken stones held together by a heavy silver band. The background story goes that Adam received the stone when he left paradise and that the stone was white but as time went by, it absorbed all the sins of the world as countless pilgrims travel every year to the stone to kiss it and it turned black.

It is expected of every Muslim to travel at least once during their lives on earth to Mecca, walk seven times around the Kaaba and kiss or touch the black stone. It all takes place during the month of pilgrimages and once the month has passed, the stone receives a ceremonial washing during which the pilgrims and the religious officials play a vital role.

Once one starts to dig deeper into the history of the awe-inspiring structure a complex history filled with rich religious meaning unfolds and it is this which is the inspiration behind so many artists being passionate about capturing the structure onto canvas, creating the kind of art you can buy at the Shabina Gallery.
