#JackedKirby - Galactus Saturday!!! 💥💥💥 Today I wanted to post a few images of the world eater himself, Galactus, from the 1978 Silver Surfer graphic novel. Jack revisits his old FF supporting characters in his last team up with his old co-Creator Stan Lee for one last rodeo.... and I don’t think he ever drew the Purple Planet Eater better!!! 💥💥💥 This book is a treasure of great Jack art, but his Galactus panels are amazing. It’s funny because I personally think is some of his best Marvel work ever... even though most people agree he was beginning to decline in the late 70s and his peak period at Marvel would be 1959-69. 💥💥💥 Maybe it was the new “Fireside Book” format that the Silver Surfer graphic novel came in that inspired such great art... or maybe it was that Jack was never given a chance to draw a proper goodbye to the Surfer/Galactus characters. #JackedKirby - Introducing... THE SKRULLS!!! 💥💥💥 The Skrulls have long been thorns in the sides of the heroes of Marvel Comics, dating as far back as #Issue2 of the Fantastic Four (January of 1962) and coming in all shapes and sizes throughout the years. Primarily played as bad guy shape shifting aliens, these green goblin look-alikes have caused tons of trouble throughout the years for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes... and now they are a focal in the new Captain Marvel movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!!! 💥💥💥 The Skrulls have had many a retcon to their overall story, but mostly they are evildoers who utilize their ability to shape shift and “sim” another person to manipulate a situation to their advantage. Jack drew them a bit more impish then they would eventually come to be known, with his early versions of the characters from FF Issue 2 resembling what would become Ditko’s Green Goblin a lot... maybe Stunning Steve was inspired a bit by his Bullpen brethren Jack? 💥💥💥 We see the “sim” process being executed by a Skrull in Pic 3 of this post, utilizing power lines and vibration to simulate the change. We also see Reed dispatching this group of Skrulls by forcing them to change into cows, and then hypnotizing them to maintain a peaceful life here on earth (Pic 6). #JackedKirby - Happy 57th Birthday to the FF!!! 4️⃣💥4️⃣💥4️⃣💥4️⃣ Marvel’s First Family is back!!!! After not being published by Marvel for the last few years, the FF is hitting shelves with a brand new series that will debut TODAY, the 57th anniversary of their publishing debut! 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ The original cover of the FF #issue1 sports a November 1961 cover date, but actually was printed on Aug 8th, 1961 (see Pic 1). The cover and interiors were drawn by Jack, with dialogue provided by Stan Lee (this is disputable, but Lee is the writer of record!). The original cover shows the team battling one of Mole Man’s subterranean monsters in the middle of Manhattan (Pic 2), with the members showing various stages of their powers. This iconic cover has been copied hundreds of times in comics.... and single handily launched Marvel Comics into the Heroic Age!!!! 4️⃣💥4️⃣💥4️⃣💥4️⃣ As iconic as that cover is, most people don’t know that the original art was lost and so reprinted versions use a SIMILAR but not EXACT replica cover (pic 3). Besides the recoloring, you may notice the missing policeman under the Johnny Storm flame tail and the 4th bystander missing from the sidewalk... as well as some variation on the architecture of the buildings/storefronts on the right side of the pic. #JackedKirby - That beard ain't gonna shave itself!!! Kirby and Lee's Nick Fury run on Strange Tales is full of amazing technology and gadgetry that have long been associated with S.H.I.E.L.D. to this very day... and a huge amount of opening splash pages featuring our titular hero! #Issue153 was published in February of 1967 and features an awesome story called The Hiding Place. While the story is typical Fury nuttiness, you have to love the random opening splashes that Jack sprinkles in! The book opens with Nick Fury reading a newspaper while sitting in a barber's chair. His ever present eye patch is there... and he has a face full of shaving cream awaiting the straight edge. But the thing that jumps out off the page has to be the fact that Fury is SMOKING A CIGAR WITH A FACE FULL OF SHAVING CREAM!!! And it's lit!!! Only Jack would do something like this... amazing. #JackedKirby - I Am The Gorilla Man! Way back in February of 1962 Marvel published Tales to Astonish #Issue28 which features a Jack and Stan Lee story entitled "I Am The Gorilla Man". It was your typical Monster of the Month story that Kirby & Lee had become know for... But considering all the recent publicity that Harambe has gotten I thought it would be a nice share! This full page splash opens the story of inventor Franz Radzik, who decides to use his gift for scientific inventiveness for evil. He creates a machine that allows him to swap consciousness with a gorilla for the purpose of using the gorilla's brute strength to commit burglaries. He doesn't anticipate the gorilla taking on human understanding and calling the cops on him to foil his caper! A typically crazy story from this duo of wacky storytellers!
