idk if it's what kae tempest was thinking but the chorus of philoctetes absolutely should be a chorus of inhabitants of the island and all women-- because it's lemnos, the island where the women famously killed the entire male population a couple of generations before the trojan war. what does it mean that philoctetes is abandoned there, on that island?
#sophocles says lemnos is a deserted island; the audience knows it is very much a fully populated island. how about sort of. half of each.#also. kae tempest did you read donna jo napoli's philoctetes ya (?) novel. because it sure looks like it#kinship across the ages with that c. 370 syracusan vase painter who just stuck some random women in the scene#it is an interesting quirk of greek tragedy that the chorus has to be all the same gender#very much lends itself to highly gendered tragedies by encouraging settings that would separate out by gender (eg armies/bacchic rites)#mine
