Having ✨️thoughts✨️ about Vegas and VegasPete after watching KinnPorsche ep 11

Ok first of all at some point I got the impression that the role Vegas plays is one that is typically played by a female character: the sexy villain seducing people to get their way.

That's what he tried with Porsche. It's what he did with Tawan. And let me tell you, this man is able to create ✨️chemistry✨️ and ✨️tension✨️ with just about anyone.

Now, he creates that tension with Porsche and Tawan by playing the sweet, honest, vulnerable, gentle, generous guy.

With Pete, he does a similar thing in the scene where he reads his tattoo (you know the one). I feel like Vegas is just extremely good at pretending to be completely smitten, like he can see nothing but the person in front of him. Pretending to be gentle and soft, if only for a few seconds. Because that's what he always does. He gets close to people and then he betrays them. (I also think Vegas is super lonely and the reason why his method of choice is seduction is that he feels validated when he gets yet another oblivious guy to genuinely fall in love with him - but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.) The actor really went for "seductive af" in that scene and he's so good at creating that tension (which is really weird because from an objective standpoint that scene is sooooo icky and obviously not okay, I don't condone any of the things he did).

But other than that, Vegas doesn't really pretend with Pete. Pete already knows what kind of person Vegas is so Vegas doesn't hide his ugly, violent, cruel side at all. So when he does end up being gentle and vulnerable, it's real. It's honest. It's not a scheme to get what he wants (at least that's what I think right now, the next episodes might prove me wrong though - he's definitely got me fooled). His panicked reaction when Pete is passed out and won't wake up?? The way he patches him up so gently and the look on his face when Pete opens his eyes??? I don't know why but that man cares about Pete, at least to some degree. And Pete seems to care, too, listening as Vegas opens up to him, asking if he's okay, and even sharing his own experiences and giving advice as if Vegas didn't torture him for days excuse me what the fuck is going on with these two they're both sooo crazy for this why does it kinda work for some reason

As of episode 11, VegasPete is a fucked up ship that shouldn't work but kind of does and it's mainly because the actors are amazing at creating a very unique and intriguing chemistry

Finding Comfort

For the sixth prompt, "Comfort", I'm going to jump ahead a bit - because there's something so tender about this small moment in episode 11.

When Kinn tells Porsche that his mother used to blow dry his hair for him, he isn't just sharing a sweet memory from his childhood; he's revealing that this particular act of kindness - taking care of his hair - has always been a source of comfort to him.

And this is a source of comfort that Porsche has given him many times, acting purely on instinct

What makes this moment even more tender is Porsche's response - he takes Kinn's confession as the plea that it is, and makes it clear that this is something he's all too happy to provide.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Wandee Goodday (Sat YT) ep 11 of 12 - Yak is such a demanding babygirl princess type. It’s kinda hilarious in a fierce boxer dude. I do adore the core brother friendship in this show. It’s so sweet. Also I guess Yak is out OUT now, on TV and everything. 

YES PLEASE GMMTV!!! This ship! Sail it!!!!

The Rebound (Weds Gaga) eps 4-6 of 12? - So it started out as a relatively simple sports romance: first love, separation, reunion. But then just went entirely off the rails: gay mafia orgies, kidnapping, druggie ex teammates with knives, I am Spartacus. All erratic Thai pulp mumbo-jumbo aside? MeenPing are doing great in these roles. Zen's hurt confusion, Ryu’s struggle with internalized homophobia that keeps hurting Zen as much as him. 

Am I wrong to ship FrankPing Just a little bit? I only wanna see them kiss. It’s not asking too much, is it? 

Not sure what’s going on with Gaga and their "ep 6 of 6" thing. Or why they bundle-aired them. Did they just get the rights for the first half? Where is the rest?  

Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 5 of 12 - I always end my Saturday with these 2 simply because I love this pair. I also enjoy the show. It’s sweet and I giggle a lot. I like that they’re dressing (and letting) Lin be a bit femmey - with his pussycat bows, coco bag, and little heels. I’m not sure about the pet names but I’ll accept them if I must.

My Stand-In (iQIYI) ep 12 fin - I would like to watch an entire show about the older brother boss and his hot secretary. Bit of a bully romance? Please & thank you?

This was a good solid ending, less predictable than I expected, which I appreciat. I liked that they had a full conversation about forgiveness. But overall, I am left in a muddle.

The show itself? A summation? Oof, here we go...

Adaptation of Chinese novel "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qiang Cheng. Stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please) directed by the same team as KinnPorsche. Stuntman Joe dies on the job and wakes up in the body of another Joe with an entirely different life. But Joe just starts repeating the mistakes of his previous self - love, work, play. I enjoyed the experience of watching this show, I looked forward to it every week. I thought everybody did a great job with it and in it, and I liked that is was something substantially *different* for Thai BL. But I’m not sure I'll rewatch it or if it's bingeable. It left me feeling more sanguine than happy. Is there, objectively, anything wrong with it? No. But am I in love with it? No. I think that rests on the central characters, Ming in particular. I never liked him or warmed to them as a couple. I spent most of this show just very very sorry for poor Joe. Thus I was never rooting for their romance. I would recommend it, if you enjoy your BL more cerebral, with complicated unlikable love interests, and a downtrodden sympathetic lead. Is it, perhaps, more JBL that ThBL? Am I biased because it's a Thai production and I had expectations? What magical carnage could Japan have done with this IP? I'm left with questions, but I'm ultimately glad I watched this.

All this means that this show should, by all my own standards, get at 9/ 10. But I'm giving it an 8/10. So there.

We Are Cute (Weds iQIYI) ep 15 of 16 - It really is the antidote to Friend Zone. Like GMMTV just set out to make a nice little show about nice boys being very nice and kissing each other nicely. And it makes me very happy.

Century of Love (Weds Gaga) eps 1-2 of 10 - DaouOffroad are back, this time as fated mates in a quasi historical paranormal moment. Very much Director Who Buys Me Dinner meets First Love Again, hopefully better than both. I love this pair and think they can handle the premise, it's whether the storytelling is up to the challenge.

So far? I like it a lot. I love it when Thailand gets all up in its own historical business and reincarnation and bullshit like that. I’ve always liked this pair too (it’s not their fault I didn’t enjoy most of their first series.) Daou’s wushu is pretty snazzy. We got a fun meet cute. (Erm... Remeet cute? Meet cute 2.0?) And this is a very PRETTY show. With more comedy than I was expecting.

This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans (Fri iQIYI) ep 2 of 8 - I like the friendships, but so far I’m not sold on the personalities of the main couple. Of course I love the pair, and I know they can handle it, but I hope the story justifies their chemistry.

My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 - They are so damn teen dramatic and over-the-top. To have really played into the impact of the counselor character's original casting, they should’ve had Krist play the role! (GET IT?) That’d be ridiculously ironic. Not that I object to GMMTVs #1 Daddy Papang. Never that. 

The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 2 of 12 - Ah ha, I figured it out. This reminds me of The Devil Wears Prada. I’m finding most of the rest of the interns too caricature and thus annoying. But I’m still liking this more than I expected. 

Love Sea (Sun iQIYI) ep 5 of 10 - The bullying GL subplot is just bad. And I’m getting an overall squick from the fact that the two rich privileged characters are essentially taking advantage of the two lower class poor characters. Trash watch here.

Knock Knock Boys (Thurs Gaga) ep 8 of 12 - I’m coming around to Almond + Latte, but I’m not super sold on any of the other plot lines.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - It’s still good and it’s still sticking relatively closely to the mango. So I’m still enjoying it.

Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - I just don’t really like the dynamic of the younger, poor, country kid desperately chasing the older hot boy. It’s a bit too desperate or something. It’d be different if Takara were a nicer person, but he doesn’t have much going for him but a pretty face.

Same actors, same character names. I love them. Devastated this hasn't had international distribution. I demand you tell me the moment you find it!

The Last Time (Thai Fri YT) - Got bumped to Aug 2. Convoluted story of loss and possible reincarnation or something.

Why did he go in the room where Pete was to cry and break down?? He wanted Pete to see it. He told Pete to laugh at him, maybe because he really wanted Pete to add insult to injury or maybe because he wanted Pete to give him a reason to punish him... so he either wanted to punish himself or Pete... interesting

Pit Babe Episode 11 Commentary

Episode 11 of Kinnporsche had second couple sex. Will Pit Babe continue this tradition?

My enigma boys are drinking together again, doing their weird sexy thing… where they barely look at each other but the tension between them is so thick you could slice it. Mmmh mmmmmmh - I ship them so hard!

I love how shamelessly preposterous this fake death is - and the more the show is like “and then this guy came in and gave him meds and then this guy came in while he was in the ambulance-“ and the more they explain it the dumber it gets. I mean, it’s fine, it’s Pit Babe, I’m not here for realism but still… this is making me laugh.

North’s print pants!!! Omg I love him. Of course Sonic is rocking another printed sweater like a sassy club kid.

Isn't it funny how a little line from a TV show can become so meaningful to you?

It's not some world shattering discovery or some eloquently worded poetry but maybe that's exactly why it's so profound. So impactful. The simplicity of it. The way Pete says it, the softness of his voice. An honest question, without any judgement.

Making yourself wonder 'Why DO I have to compare?' and coming to the conclusion that you really don't.

Replaying that scene in my head has become such an effective way to get myself out of dark places it's embarrassing, actually.

So yeah. I get why Vegas only needed one conversation to be head over heels, I guess.

Kinn’s Startle Response

Okay, so we all know that waking Kinn up from a deep sleep is a bad idea, right? Porsche shows us this very clearly in episodes 5 and 6, where he suddenly had/would have had a gun pointed right in his face:

But, this isn’t the only times we see Kinn startled awake - first, later in episode 6, he’s woken by Porsche in the early morning:

And this is probably the most relaxed we’d seen Kinn, up to this point in the show - he isn’t scared, he doesn’t go into murder mode, he just looks over at Porsche with new affection.

I think this moment makes it clear that Kinn’s previous startle response is tied directly to his levels of anxiety/stress. He’d just spent a day away from being a mafia boss - learning to fish, joking around, bathing with Porsche - and he’d also just made his first apology to Porsche. He’s finally unburdened, so his subconscious is no longer on high alert.

And this extends to episode 11, when Tay and Time sneak in to surprise Kinn and Porsche on a sleepy morning in bed:

Kinn (and Porsche)’s first response is to open his eyes to look at what’s disturbing them, then after he realizes it’s just his asshole friends he kicks at them. It’s no more violent a response than any other guy with his friends, and that’s because his mind is settled - he’s relaxing in bed with his love, with his family’s approval and no more Tawan/mole to deal with. Life is good!

Besides being adorably awkward (poor Porsche 😂), I think this scene also gives us some extra insight into Kinn’s startle response - it seems like it was a recent development for him, maybe even after he took over for his dad (when I imagine the death threats ramped up). That’s because of Tay and Time, who we know have been Kinn’s friends for a while (since at least his relationship with Tawan) and are close enough to him that they’re let into his suite without being announced:

If Kinn’s startle response had always been to be instantly ready to murder someone, his best friends would have surely learned to avoid doing it a long time ago. Instead, I think we’re seeing that Porsche has brought Kinn back to his actual default state - a peaceful mind, and arms ready to snuggle

It's hard to answer this bc it's hard to point out which exactly is my fav series, I mean... There are certainly at least a handful of series that I adore. But, if we're looking at them all and trying to pick the best line, then I can only give it to one:

"No..." by Pat (Bad Buddy - Ep. 5)

I know it's such an incredibly simple line, it's just one single word... "ไม่"... But it's so, so, SO fucking good, so well delivered. WOW.

It's way more than the line itself, I mean, a "no" can mean many things, right? But it's how it is delivered.

The pacing, the expression on his face, the tears...

It's how Nanon doesn't let Ohm's acting fall flat by being equally as amazing, if not better!

It's how both you AND PRAN just know EXACTLY what Pat means.

No, he doesn't wanna be your friend. But not because he hates, no. Because he LOVES you.

It's the want, it's the need, it's pain, it's the fear, it's... Well, it's everything.

Chills, literal chills. What a great fucking delivery, what a great fucking scene overall... It leaves rent-free in my head.
