PERMITS SCAM - TIME MIGHT BE running out for people who illegally obtain taxi permits to purchase duty-free vehicles. DAILY NATION investigations revealed that hundreds of people had been applying to the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) for taxi permits, with the sole purpose of buying high-end vehicles at a fraction of the cost. When asked recently if he was aware of the practice, Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley declined to speak on the matter, and deferred comment to his deputy permanent secretary Anthony Wiltshire. Wiltshire condemned any such practice and pledged to investigate the matter now that it had been brought to his attention. (DN)

BAG BLUES – Local plastic bag manufacturers are eyeing a move by environmentalists with concern as the start date for a deterrent fee on plastic bags draws near. They say the 20-cent charge will erode their already small market share and lay-offs could be in the offing. However, the Future Centre Trust’s advocacy director, Kammie Holder, said the manufacturers should consider the island’s environmental well-being and not just their bottom line. He hinted that the banning of plastic straws could be next on the Trust’s agenda. Come May 1, an initiative spearheaded by BICO Ltd, and involving supermarkets, department and hardware stores, will see customers who do not walk with their own reusable bags, being charged for every one that is used to bag items. The fee is already in place at meat wholesaler H. Jason Jones which, since last March, has been charging customers 25 cents per bag. (DN)

CABLE & WIRELESS - TELECOMMUNICATION CONTINUES TO be one of the major growth sectors for the Caribbean region. And according to Jenson Sylvester, vice-president of Cable & Wireless (C&W) Business, the business arm of telecoms provider Flow, local companies have done well to leverage available technologies such as corporate networks, unified communications and mobility solutions in their day-to-day enterprise. Sylvester believed a main driver for future enterprise would be IoT – a widely proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects are “smart” and have network connectivity already built-in, thereby allowing the device to send and receive data. While noting there was still much to be done for Barbados to realise a full IoT environment, Sylvester said consumer demand for digital technologies would help drive the initiative, coupled with Government’s efforts to operate more effectively and efficiently through applications such as connected traffic lights, asset monitoring and tracking, and a national network of video surveillance. FEED PROBLEMS MAY AFFECT PORK SUPPLY - Barbadians could possibly find difficulty in getting pork in adequate quantities this year. That is, until the Barbados Association of Pig Farmers gets production back to the high numbers of years ago. It’s not that there is no demand, said those in the industry, but issues with genetics and feed have been having a negative impact on the sector. NEW BARP INSURANCE PLAN - Almost a year after being dropped by their medical insurance carrier, members of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) can finally plan for the future. That’s because a United States-based company, come March 1, will provide coverage to over 2 000 retirees. BARP president Ed Bushell told the DAILY NATION yesterday that Florida-based insurer Premier Assurance (PA) Group had agreed to provide coverage to BARP members following the decision by the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Ltd (ICBL) to drop them last year. According to its website, the PA Group has provided medical coverage to people in 195 countries for over the last 18 years. (DN)

CHEKITA NEEDS $243,000 FOR SURGERY - Three months ago, 20-year-old Chekita Belgrave was like any other hard-working student preparing for college exams. Now she is facing six months of surgery, including reconstructive facial surgery and chemotherapy, the result of an aggressive and rare form of cancer which Chekita at first thought was a painful toothache. The Queen’s College alumna and a second-year marketing student at Humber College in Canada, has now become the face of an appeal for CAN$160 000 (Bds$243 000) to battle osteogenic sarcoma, a cancerous bone tumour. FOGGING SCHEDULE - The Vector Control Unit of the Ministry of Health will continue its fogging programme this week in an effort to reduce the island’s mosquito population.

On Monday, January 16, the team will head to St James to spray Laynes Road, Paynes Bay, Chapel Road, Clarke’s Road, Derricks, Appleby Gardens and the environs.

The next day, on Tuesday, January 17, fogging will continue in the St Peter districts of Queen Street, Archers Lane, Bovell Road, Porters Road, Mango Lane, Chapel Street, Gooding Alley, Church Street, Major Walk and neighbouring districts.

On Wednesday, January 18, the Vector Control Unit will journey to St Andrew to spray Savannah Road, Shorey Village, Doughlin Tenantry, St Andrew’s Church, Walkers, Bawdens, Babylon Road and the surrounding areas.

The following day, on Thursday, January 19, the team will return to St James to fog Fitts Village, Risk Road, Vaughns Road, Berbice 1& 2, Piggott Road, Jordans Road, Johnson Road, Prospect Road and the environs.

Householders are reminded to open their windows and doors to allow the spray to enter. Fogging will take place between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day. (BT)

JAMAICAN FATHER ACCUSED OF BEATING 32 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER - A 32-year-old woman was in tears when she appeared in court with her 56-year-old father who reportedly used a shovel to beat her all over her body. The accused, Lascelles Morgan, of a Kingston address, was brought before the court last Friday on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm. The complainant and her father were reportedly involved in an argument on December 13, last year, when he used the tool to assault her. The complainant reported the matter and Morgan was arrested and charged. Judge Pettigrew-Collins, after hearing the allegations, suggested that they both go to counseling and they agreed. As a result, the matter was set for mention on March 14 and Morgan’s bail was extended. (BT)

US WOMAN KIDNAPPED AS BABY FOUND ALIVE - A new born girl stolen from a Florida hospital 18 years ago has been found alive — and overwhelmed — in South Carolina, where police accused the woman who raised her of kidnapping. Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said Friday DNA analysis identified the young woman, who never knew that her birth name was Kamiyah Mobley. He said she’s in good health but understandably overwhelmed. Police arrested 51-year-old Gloria Williams of Walterboro, South Carolina, on charges of kidnapping and interference with custody. The sheriff said the woman’s birth family is rejoicing, but how and when to reconnect with them is up to the young woman. She was only eight hours old when she was taken by a woman posing as a nurse from University Medical Center in 1998. (BT)

CONTROVERSIAL PASTOR DIES AT 63 - Bishop Eddie Long, the controversial Georgia-based head of one of America’s largest megachurches, has died, according to the church he presided over. He was 63. Long died after a battle with an aggressive form of cancer, according to a statement by the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. “Bishop Long was known as one of the most influential faith leaders in the world,” the church said in the statement. “He stood strong as a Kingdom Builder, pioneering leader, and revolutionary mind changer.Although his transition leaves a void for those of us who loved him dearly, we can celebrate and be happy for him, knowing he’s at peace,” his wife Vanessa Long said in the statement. At its peak New Birth Missionary Baptist Church had about 25,000 members. But Long had a controversial past. In 2010, he and his church settled a lawsuit filed by four young men who accused him of pressuring them into sexual relationships while they were teenagers and members of his congregation. Long, who preached passionately against homosexuality for years, denied the allegations. In 2011, Vanessa Long filed for divorce. Shortly afterward, Long told his followers he was taking some time off to work on his marriage. The couple later reconciled. (BT)

ODD START TO TRACK SEASON- Local athletes officially laced up their track shoes for the first time in 2017 when they competed in the New Year’s Odd Distance Classic at the National Stadium on Saturday. Athletes from schools and clubs across the island competed in the 50, 150, 300, 600 and 1 200 metres as well as field events. Saturday’s meet was the second staged at the stadium for the year following Eden Lodge Primary’s inter-house sports the previous day. Kai Alleyne, of Elite Distance Programme, wasn’t at all set back by the sweet treats of the holidays, slamming the track with a top-notch performance. (DN)

SPORT FACILITIES FIX PROMISED – Government may be cash-strapped but the state-run National Sports Council (NSC) still disbursed more than $2 million last year to assist athletes and national associations. Minister of Sport Stephen Lashley made this revelation in his welcome address at the NSC’s annual awards ceremony at Frank Collymore Hall on Saturday night. Lashley said the funds were given directly to athletes and through their associations. He promised that with a new financial year approaching, his ministry, which includes the portfolios of culture and youth, will be “putting in place a number of policies to create an environment conducive to the development of sport in Barbados”. ATHLETES URGED TO THINK BIG –Barbadian athletes and sports federations must think world class. This was the advice of Olympic Medallist, Obadele Thompson during the 34th Annual National Sports Council Awards held at the Frank Collymore Hall last evening under the theme, Sports – Positioning For Global Success. Thompson, an Olympic Bronze medallist at the 2000 Sydney Games, was the featured speaker. He explained that unless and until Barbados can make a global impact in sports, significant global partnerships are not likely to come calling. “We need to take greater initiative in identifying and supporting our brightest and most talented athletes, in so doing we create awareness for Barbados and gaining some leverage to perhaps sit at the negotiating table with global companies and organizations to get them to invest in us, and the more athletes that we can actively develop, the greater leverage we have,” Thompson said. “We need to show potential global partners that Barbados is serious about sports at all levels – from our athletes’ development, to our facilities, to our support services – and again this only happens as a result of world-class thinking and planning being implemented and designed by the right people,” Thompson said. HAYLEY MATTHEWS WINS SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR - West Indies and Barbadian female cricketer Hayley Mathews has captured both the 2016 National Sports Personality and Junior Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year Awards announced last night at the Frank Collymore Hall. Mathew’s, a batting all-rounder who led West Indies to an historical win at last year’s International Cricket Council T20 World Cup, is currently on tour playing for Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia. She was represented by her father Mike at the 34th Annual National Sports Awards. Other athletes taking the spotlight were Emerging Athlete of the Year, Meagan Best; Olympians Ramon Gittens and Akela Jones who won Senior Outstanding Sportsperson Female and Male. SHOW JUMPERS FACE OFF - Local show jumping horses were put to the test in a recent two-day competition between Canada and Barbados. The 11 Canadian show jumpers were led by coach Suzi Niles, of team Iron Horse Equestrian Complex of Ontario, at Big C Stables in Frere Pilgrim, Christ Church in the first event here of the year. It was sponsored by Nissan and Hyundai. In the first night’s competition of power and speed, local favourite Helena Povey was unable to compete due to flu. But crowd-pleaser Slade Jones, aboard his chestnut Ole, managed to keep the Barbados flag flying. Jones rode a corking clear round in a time of 16.32 seconds, just edging out Gracie Phillips of Canada who took second place in a time of 16.41 seconds. Andrew Christie, the lone male for the Iron Horse team, was third aboard Lucky Luke in a time of 18.84 seconds. (DN)

ARTS AWARD FOR RPB - Veteran entertainer and prolific songwriter Stetson RPB Wiltshire has been held up as a beacon of the cultural industry. Known for his command of the stage, RPB was put under a different spotlight on Saturday when he was honoured during the Barbados Independent Film Festival, a day before the curtains were brought down on the inaugural event. “This festival is also about honouring the cultural industries in Barbados, the cultural industries in the Caribbean. We did one honour earlier, let us now honour Red Plastic Bag,” declared festival co-director Sir Trevor Carmichael, as he touted the entertainer’s many accomplishments. “His recognition is not restricted to Barbados. It’s also worldwide. He has had honours in Barbados but he has also had international recognition awards in the United States cities of Boston and Washington,” Sir Trevor told attendees, who included diplomats and members of the film industry. A TALE OF TWO STYLES - The Naniki Barbados Music Festival event on the lawns of Ilaro Court East last Saturday night was an occasion of contrasting musical tones. The evening was shaped by the operatic stylings of American recording artiste Chrisette Michele and the edgy Caribbean strains of Barbadian artistes Ch’An and the band 2 Mile Hill. Michele, a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, who is no stranger to Barbados or the Naniki stage, caused the audience – who until then had been sipping wine as they reclined in their seats – to rush to the stage to secure the best vantage point. Patrons armed themselves with their phones to record the very minute that Michele appeared dressed in a sparkling sheer green overall, backed by her live band and two agile female dancers. (DN)
