Summary: just a short drabble about nicolas brown, got struck with a writing bug after re-reading the manga. not beta'd, any mistakes are mine. GANGSTA. is a work of fiction that belongs to the lovely kohske

Nicolas Brown doesn't know what his best friend's voice sounds like. He can never hear the expletives that Alex surely exclaims whenever that idiot makes another pass at her. Can't really hear how hard the smack is that she surely deals him, just sees Worrick's sheepish face as he walks towards Nic, hoping for some comfort, as if an makeshift ice pack of frozen peas Nic throws at him could be called comfort. Sometimes the atmosphere changes slightly, the hairs on his arms raise slightly and he knows it's Alex behind him, probably trying to tell him something, maybe reaching out to put a hand on his shoulder; he couldn't really figure  out why she wanted his company so much, but it sort of beat the practical jokes Worrick was always trying to pull. 

Nic uses his superhuman eyes to gauge a situation. He hated lip-reading though, everyone always talked too fast, or, when they figured out his disability, too damn slow. Sometimes he opened his mouth and used his voice, out of frustration, mostly. He could feel his vocal chords  vibrate and tried to move his mouth into an appropriate shape for as few words as possible to come out and make his point. Nic just prefers to let his body do the talking. A flash of his teeth, the swing of his fist or a glint of his sword usually made others a lot more cooperative than his voice did. 

Whatever Nic lacked in senses, however, didn't hinder his ability to feel things. He could feel when someone was yelling at him. Feel when some fool attempted to stab him in the back. Maybe it was part of his supernatural abilities, or possibly it was to make up for his hearing. He didn't really care why it happened, as long as it never failed him. He wanted to feel Alex's warm hand over his, and Worrick slapping him on the back after a job well done, and the wind in his face as he soared through the air with is sword drawn and murder in his eyes. He didn't know what he would do if he went completely numb.
