shen jiu and shen yuan. king and jester, respectively.

they don't switch, ever, of course. why would they, when shen jiu obviously has no interest in such a ridiculous life. he can already say whatever he wants, he's king, and a king who doesn't care if he offends his vassals. who cares about the opinions of those beneath him, not shen jiu. they don't switch, ever. shen jiu just gets into moods where he wants to binge read a book or something, so he'll spend it in the library, royal guards at every entrance forbidding anyone entry. or he gets a horrible headache and lies abed all day. that sort of thing just happens sometimes. he's a particular, somewhat delicate, man!

and if the jester is off to the...seedier parts of town while the king's stacking bestiaries into a tower, so what!

(shen yuan is terrible at impersonating shen jiu but shen jiu's essentially flawless. the only person who can tell is yue qingyuan and that's only in very specific circumstances that hardly ever come around)

anyway i love twins and jiuyuan so i do think they should fuck but also. very fun if shen jiu starts getting romanced by tianlangjun while he's supposed to be the jester (they keeps running into each other when he visits his jiejies in the brothels. perhaps literally. shen jiu has a terrible impression of him. tianlangjun, enamored already, is doubly endeared as a result)

meanwhile shen yuan keeps feeding a stray (luo binghe is a very accomplished little street rat, very light on his feet, quick with his fingers, has lifted a good number of things from the palace already, but ever since he met yuan gege the things he makes off with have steadily decreased in value to others---scraps of paper with half finished drawings of beasts, a very chewed quill, a bit of thread snagged upon a splinter---but are priceless to him, on par with the pendant his mother left him)

at the end of one of their swap days, shen jiu's wiping all the paint off his face before getting in bed---shen yuan's already there, reading---and he asks, casually, if anything interesting happened today:

shen yuan, fumbling his book and nearly dropping it, equally as casually: no!!! haha!!! what about you, ge???

shen jiu, pausing for less than a second as he wipes his eye: also no.

they look at each other in tacit understanding to pursue this further perhaps tomorrow

Horrible fantasy idea:

Every time the royal firstborn happens to be twins, the dispute of which one is the one who is the rightful heir to the throne is settled by division of labour: One of them is to become the future queen/king, and the other one is to become the royal jester. One can do whatever they want but must be very careful with what they say, the other can say whatever they want but must be very careful with what they do.

It is not exactly uncommon for the two to fight over which one gets to be the jester. But in the occasion when they agree to take turns on which one sits on the throne and which one at the foot of it (in disguise of course), it's considered polite to at least pretend to not notice the ruse.
