Hey birch! Quick ask for your writing on POF. What do you like the most about your Kurloz and Gamzee? If you could pick a few favorite things or traits from the versions of them you created, what do you think those would be? It's ok if you skip, I just got curious. I love your epic clown sagaaa 🥰🥰

!!! :Oc oh huh! My favorite traits are almost always the ones that create friction--some of those are neutral but create drama and some of them are outright negative, lol. Short answer, PoF Gamzee's a reckless coward and PoF Kurloz is incredibly dangerous and proud over top of a deep well of insecurity. Long answer.....under the cut, lol.

The Gamzee I write is, and I say this with authorial love and tbh no moral judgment, kind of a coward. He's not scared of the same stuff as most of us would be, he's good at combat and he likes pain, but also he's hugely, deeply afraid--of lots of stuff, but especially being left behind, and that drives a ton of his characterization.

Being left/abandoned is a pretty returning theme for a reason! From the very first chapter, when Gamzee's internal monologue is basically, "Well, time for the thing that made me happy to Go Away again. Hopefully if I'm good and I wait well enough, it'll eventually come back." He's been captured on his first mission, is his family going to leave him to die? Karkat's cocooning, is he ever coming back? Kurloz is poisoned and the family is turning on him as a suspect, are they done with him forever? He's the lynchpin of the Cult of Flesh's heresy, are his gods going to turn their faces away from him?

And when he feels like he has been abandoned, he goes through cycles of rage and then retreating from the rage, because being angry is holy but being angry is bad and drives people away, but being angry feels right, but-- It drives him to be overly obliging, trying not to drive people away, and it pushes him to be vicious when somebody seems to be interfering with his grasp on the things he values. It makes him a very sweet guy who'd do just about anything for the people he cares about, and it makes him clingy and dependent and blindly devoted, and prone to lashing out when he feels like they don't care about him as much as he cares about them!

I identify with a lot of that as an author, but I also just feel like it dovetails pretty neatly into the scant amounts of canon characterization we get for Gamzee, so I find it very compelling to read/write!

As far as Kurloz goes, what I like most about him as a character is probably like...his pride? And (especially because this is a kinky sex fic) the shame that goes along with that.

On a very surface level, the concept of the Grand Highblood as a grumpy, proud old guy who's getting reluctantly dragged in the direction of a still terrible but less hemoist society is very funny to me. Make up a bigoted old man and then force him to knuckle under repeatedly to the people he's bigoted against. But also on a more-plot-less-humor level, a character who's made himself a very strict code of "this is what's expected of me and I will fulfill it no matter what it does to me" is RIPE for drama. Especially when the plot of the story is then giving that character something that suddenly he finds he values at least as much as that code and pride, and making him struggle with that.

The counterpoint to that being; it's fun to set up a character as a proud, badass, dangerous son of a bitch, and then give the POV/the readers a shot straight into the shit that he's hiding behind that "I'm untouchable, don't fuck with me" pride. Sadism, especially as extreme as I've written into Kurloz, can be an intimidating thing! On the surface it's part of the mask, part of the scary persona--but it's really compelling and interesting to me to then sidestep that mask and go into the roiling mess of sexual shame and religious guilt and uncertainty and self-loathing. MAN I love writing the Brother Immortal scenes, you guys.

I think Gamzee should babysit for no other reason that it'd be a disaster. If anything these kids are babysitting him. Do not perceive the fact that this makes no sense from a timeline perspective, I just think this arrangement is sick and hilarious. These kids don't respect short kings. Barzum and Baizli would run circles around him, and Karako is just cheesed to be here and no help to Gamzee at all. He probably thinks Gamzee is relatable and cool, though.

and listen. listen about Kurloz, the LEAST appreciated clown and yet. He's Iconic. He'd get along with Chahut (derogatory) and LITERALLY any Makara in the same room as Marvus is just asking for a high tension clown off. And finally: Gamzee's neck ruffles are vital to me, and so are his lil robes. Self serious, remember? His adult designs always felt like a missed opportunity to make him more Pennywise-esque, or more traditionally clowny. As in those one piece clown suits and the NECK RUFFLES. Ah the funny clown man. Like a lot of characters, he went down the shitter, but lets take it from the top, shall we? Gamzee stood out as the only other docile Highblood aside from Feferi. Both Vriska and Eridan openly practiced their highblood murderous instincts and Equius expressed it through fighting robots rather then other trolls. Its not really clear why Feferi was gentle, other then sheer fucking willpower, I suppose. So why then was Gamzee like that? Well troll drugs of course! Soper slime makes you high like weed! Funny joke! And that was Gamzee's whole sctick for awhile, he was a stoner. However, we would see a glimpse of his true nature. Karkat mentions that Gamzee's attack was the most devestating to the 12x Prototype Black king and was most likely why they won. An easily missed little tidbit, a slip of the mask as it were. The true nature of Gamzee would arise when the soper ran out and his rage was kindled, killing Equius and Nepeta. This was the highest stakes Homestuck ever had, characters were dying, of course the dream bubbles hadnt yet been made into a thing, so we didnt know that dying was entirely pointless but it still held a lot of tension at the time. More then Jack or Lord English, ole Gamzee here was a real threat because we had spent time with him. So what happened? The ole shoosh pap. Uh....sure ok? But the shoosh pap did not completely clear his malevolent air, as he hid in the vents and secretly met with Kurloz to do nefarious deeds like....make a cod peace. Sure. Then we began the question of "Is Gamzee Godtier and therefore immortal?" and the answer was....whatever was funnier at the time. He was back to being a funny clown man! Hopping between timelines, helping Caliborn and the Alpha kids out! Selling blood to Jane! ha ha! Then Game Over happened. And boy did it happen. Back to being an antagonist, he killed karkat before being killed by Kanaya. Then we had the Vriska Retcon, and hey Gamzee was literally fridged and did no harm to anyone. And then HS2 happened. And man, did it happen. So Gamzee is back, and he's talking about a redemption arc, all the while saying "My ninja" which of course is code for "My nigga" because why not make all those things people said about Gamzee being a black stoner true! Ha ha, so progressive! And with Gamzee being black, that means the weird Cuck thing he has with Jane is technically BBC cucking. Im not saying that Jane is a Snowbunny/Queen of Spades, but I mean, the HS2 writers are maybe saying that! Also! He's implied to be inappropriate with Jane's son, Tavros! So lets make him a pedophile to boot! And then of course he gets chocked out by Vriska and her and Vrissy hang out, laying on his corpse, because.....???????????????????????? Yeah, funny clown man. Ugh, he was an interesting antagonist for a minute there, and then fell down the writing hole and became just The Worst(TM)

Starting with a very new addition to the roster, started playing this march and got hooked to a lot of characters but i can't put all of them on this list so i'm putting Emu because she's my colorful little decora gremlin princess. How long were Travye and Kurloz together before they broke up?

Mmm, I am not a numbers person, especially because I will not remember what I said later, lol. So I don't have a number for you! But it was definitely like...a pretty significant amount of time. Something in the order of sweeps/years, not months.

...Definitely quite a bit longer than Kurloz and Gamzee were together before they let the news get out, which did not help Halore's immediate distrust and resentment of Gamzee just like, right off the jump.

gamzee says he thinks i have a substance problem, and i look at him in mild surprise. the omen hums opiate as he puts cards on the table, kurloz staring at his own hand. a ridiculous game, considering.

tim looks up from his book and shoots a warning glance at the younger makara, blacklisted topic. nobody talks about what i do in september or february, it's a rule.  

the juggalo's legs hang over the arm of the sofa as he reaches to take,, something? from the king, who is sat across from herod, sat next to blue. very odd. they all grin the same and laugh the same and it turns me cold. their new way of saying "no big deal" is saying "its just crumbs in a walmart bag" and it sends redpop entirely violent whenever he hears it. its why they do it. they don't know what it does to me yet or they'd say it a hell of a lot more.

jane has calmed down, still prefers the attic but sometimes comes to sit in the window for the sunlight. her arms never heal. 

penance is very much himself, his "dad" ""visits"" sometimes to turn his vision purple and make me watch his face, his hands, do what mine should have done if penny didn't get the inhabitation issue. im bored of seeing the inside of red's skull now, but it's moved on to cutting numbers deep into herod's face, and that does get me. 

the omen sends me sideways for fun and ive got multiple unhealed gunshot wounds because, isnt it funny, i conveniently forget that turps recognises me as redpop every time. i get back and the omen is barely holding a laugh back. the chair tells him off often but can't touch him past scolding him.

wrath from HN reached out to me and 300 is just waiting on the word that i will never give. im not getting dragged back into that, not now. cant say not ever but not now. 

all in all, this home is not very relaxed. i fall asleep every night with the help of blue's static and wake, sick, in red's arms. i sleep a lot. saves my body from the month.
