IDK how ZAGR can work when Jhonen confirmed that Zim is a thousands year old adult while Gaz is a kid... yet he also says ZAGR would have been endgame if he had to do romance. Was he joking about it or is Zim biologically a (presumably) perpetual young adult to where when Gaz grows up, it isn't illegal or creepy (Like everlasting adulthood, but still mortal)??? I'm more confused than I should be.

oof, the classic zim-age battle. I haven’t been in the fandom for a while so my memory’s a little rusty.

What I can say is that the “zim is 1000+ year old adult” is a recent statement on Zim’s age. Even then, when it’s brought up, it’s said in a joking context. I take everything Jhonen says with a grain of salt, canon isn’t something he prioritizes when it comes to zim, he bends what’s established to service the humor. In the 20+ year of the show’s existence, a good chunck of the viewers has assumed zim’s age was likened to the kids. Or that at the very least, he conveniently aged alongside the cast. I thought similarly when watching the show for the first time. But now that Jhonen’s been consistently joking Zim’s an “old man” (note, he doesn’t specify an age. He just. says “old man” hfjffj) it’s safe to assume he’s an adult. probably?? Even then, I’ve seen vet fans and mutuals say that the trial script would have clarified Zim’s as old as the Tallest. But then, what about the one zagr fanart on the staff’s fanart wall? what about the storyboard zadr doodles during production of the movie?? Joke or not, wouldn’t it be weird if not un-pc of the staff to pit the boys together like that?? Again, it’s all very muddy. It’s not my favorite topic to discuss because our only authority on the issue loves to play with canon like a cat with a ball of yarn. and violently ingest it. then hack it up like a hairball.

Ah, the zagr endgame claim. *wipes tear* It’s untrue btw. It’s a beautiful offspring of fandom telephone that’s lasted all these years :’) The IZ wiki is… um, highly opinionated on certain topics (Gaz’s supposed pyro abilities, for example) and there’s NO citation for this claim. I wouldn’t look to it as a totally reliable source…. I personally scoured the internet and youtube, I watched any Jhonen Invadercon interview I could (god. PLEASE don’t watch them. Fans ask intruding and embarrassing questions to the poor guy). I’ve yet to find him say zagr was endgame.

Jhonen’s depictions of IZ has changed. 2019 Jhonen wanted to focus on family and Dib’s dynamic with his dad. He wanted Membrane to be a prominent character. 2000 Jhonen was fine having Membrane waltz in and out of the kid’s life, even having Membrane be absent with a drone monitoring the kids in his place (cynical implications lmao). So even if he DID entertain the idea of zagr, his opinion likely changed. He’s had the comics to suggest an alliance between Zim and Gaz, or develop some kind of relationship. We kinda made progress with issue 16 with Zim realizing Gaz is tolerable to be around and wondering out loud why they don’t hang out more (which is shut down by Gaz lmao)??? But that’s it.

I’m sorry abt the confusion :( Do what you feel is best, be mindful how you engage in conversation abt stuff like Zim’s age to other fans. Zim’s an adult? cool. Zim’s ageless and doesn’t adhere to human standards of maturity? complicated, but ok. Zim’s a kid? alrighty. It’s something we’ll be forever divided on, unfortunately. So: To each their own!

huge thanks to my literature teacher for reigniting my IZ obsession from the 2nd grade. Only this time I have access to the internet.

Also mini rant: is there anyone else who gets massive secondhand embarrassment from when any of the zadr shit interacts with the voice actors? Like I said, I’m only now discovering a bunch of invader zim stuff on the internet and I saw a video where someone asks Dib’s VA to say “I love you Zim” with a bunch of fangirls squealing in the background. Idk man, I don’t wanna hate ZADR bc I have to admit some of the fan content for it is cute, but I’ve also never gotten that vibe of shipping those two from the show, since the show itself is very “anti fandom” to me yk? It doesn’t really promote a bunch of shipping fuel and wholesome moments that’s why.

One instance that made me wanna bash my head against the wall was where the VA’s were reading the scripts for unfinished episodes in a panel, and all you could hear was “awwwww” in the crowd and YOU COULD SEE THE VOICE ACTORS KINDA CONFUSED BY IT but not really? It was just incessant squealing and awwing all the time I was lowkey weirded out. I don’t wanna judge but jesus christ. And apparently jhonen was disappointed by it too, but although it’s sad seeing jhonen what fandom and fame does to how a show’s perceived, its also kinda funny.

I think what makes me so uncomfortable and kinda embarrassed is how visibly disconnected and confused the creator and voice actors are. Other creators, like Rebecca sugar or Dana Terrace or Alex Hirsch, all are knowledgeable with fandom shenanigans and atrocities. The capability of fans and how fucked up some people are. So they seem at ease and fine. Meanwhile these much older (let’s admit) people who helped create this very unique show that should be received and appreciated for its art and gross sarcastic humor, is getting the same treatment as other more modern and similar in tone shows.

No hate to anybody, it’s just interesting. I would reallly like to hear what somebody like andy berman thinks of this. Is this weird or embarrassing? Do you understand what’s going on through these fangirls’ minds? Or do you think you’re involved in something so bizarre, you’ll never get the hype?

I’m one of those fuckers who starving of zadf content to the point that I made content for myself or consume zadr content but just for the fluffs of it.

Do I ship zadr? no, not at all.

I don’t mind it. My feeling is basically see two accquitants start to date. Like, cool, you guys are cute together, I guess. And then zadf is like me see two of my friends who are so fucjing similar that fight all the time finally get along. Like, FUCKING FINALLY!! Top 3 ships (or any fandom) and why

Personally, I think as long as there’s good content for a ship, I’m liable to enjoy it. I’m really bad at deciphering characters so if someone else can show me how they’d work I can usually get into it pretty easy unless it’s way awkward and forced. Still, this is kind of hard to answer because I think of absolutely no one and also everyone at the same time, so I’m kinda going to try to base it off not content, but wether or not I started shipping it by myself.

For 1, I’d have to say even before I saw RaPr ship stuff I got the vibe Red and Purple were a couple. They’re a power couple. They’re both assholes. I can respect it. Also Kevin McDonald’s voice. Must I elaborate?

2 Quanxi and her four girlfriends from Chainsaw Man. When I was reading and saw them it was like: hell yeah! Because hell yeah! Idk I really like their whole aesthetic and I’m usually not a big fan of polyamorous ships so idk I’m surprised I liked em as much as I did.

3 Hello I’m breaking the rules I set myself by putting ZaDr here. I didn’t really ship them while I was watching the show, but I can really appreciate seeing their dynamic in aus and in basically any content outside of what Jhonen produced. Although tbh I don’t really like the whole ship when they’re softened out and dolled up, like idk but they’re both ugly. They’re both bastards. I can respect it. Although I think I can appreciate seeing any representation of their dynamic (friends, enemies, etc. I just think they’re funky).

I don't think I'm going to end up writing irken au as a full fic and I feel kind of bad about it, but I just.... really don't feel like I'd actually make it all the way through without dropping.

I might write a series of ficlets, but it's noooooot going to be anything near the size of aip. I feel like trying to start another long project is just gonna burn me out on iz for a while. I'm never going to stop loving iz, but I kinda need a break. more under cut.

I’m never going to hate iz, it’s been way too important to me and I still love the characters and working with the world so much, it’s just... I was working with WAY LESS than this when I was 15-18 or so and ducking in and out in 6-month phases because the fandom was way more dead then, (it was still kinda kicking when I was like 12-14, at least more than it was a few years later) but having a bunch of people all slowly stop caring just... kinda really sucks? a lot? talking to myself on purpose is different than performing in a thriving auditorium and then having like 75% of the people leave. 

plus, I didn't realize just how burnt out I got until I started writing for something new and actually felt REALLY REALLY EXCITED to write again. I like td but it's... not as fun to write. I like the end product but the actual WRITING process is more frustrating than fun at times.

I don't know if some of this is just having to write 50k words for class in a month and a half and hitting general writing burnout, but I was pumping out the new fandom fic pretty fast so I don't think it's that? having the zim fandom slowing down is... probs part of it. I hate, hate, hate what anti-shippers have done, harassing people out of the fandom who have done nothing wrong. I followed recapkid through a few different accounts on twitter because vindictive assholes are still stalking them to THIS DAY and kept reporting them. every one of you who thinks people shipping funny alien with paranormal man justifies horrible harassment and doxxing, go sit on a poker, you’re a big part of the reason so many people peaced out and I can’t blame them for it. 

okay, don’t want to get too off-topic. anyway, irken au feels... idk. easy to mess up, I guess? like, it's much more of a tight emotional arc, and I like being able to play it loose, so just the idea of writing it feels like it'd be a chore- aip was so fun because it was basically ficlets in order. td, I’m putting off writing partially because it’s much more ‘normal’ in format and I feel stifled by that. even if I took the aip ficlets-in-order format, there’s only so much I can do without directly ripping aip off, and it mostly takes place on dib’s ship, so it’s just dealing with Feelings Stuff. besides... I don't want to pick up another zadr longfic. I like writing the short ones now.

related, I want to do more on discord but I just feel completely wrung dry for ideas and feel like I have nothing of worth left to contribute. I like seeing the stuff others make, but I don't know what to add- I just feel sort of empty and feel more and more guilty that I don’t have anything to say as time goes on. you’re wonderfully creative and I am dust. I think 2020 brain finally made its way to me.

it’s an awful, hollow feeling, because I want to keep going with iz so badly but it feels like the people who are left are already in their own groups, and I don’t want to get burned, especially considering I’m running on fumes as-is. anybody from the discord reading this, it’s absolutely not you guys, you’re the best. it’s me.

there’s still pleeeeeenty of issues in my new fandom, (it’s just as bad as iz, if I’m honest, possibly even worse) but I’m actually having fun there because I’m fine vibing with a much smaller group, and I’m posting a lot more. it’s self-indulgent bullshit to the nth degree but I think that’s what I need right now.

I’m probably going to post the next chapter of td soon, but I might pull back from making content the fandom for a little bit other than the discord just because I refuse to burn out entirely on this thing that’s meant so much to me.
