In honor of Valentine’s Day, here’s my first fanfic!
It’s Part 1 of 2, just a fluffy little Rocketshipping confession/first kiss fic. (Part 2 here!)
Truth and Love Revealed:
Another day, another blast-off. Another night in the open.
James was quiet as he spread his sleeping bag on the smooth ground. Meowth had set up a battery powered lantern so the three of them could see what they were doing, and something about the look on Jessie’s face made James think there was something she wanted to tell him. Or ask him.
“Have you ever thought about the future? When we’re grown up—really grown up, I mean—will we have different jobs? Different families?” She seemed to notice the look of panic on his face. “Not that anything like that will happen anytime soon, or ever, maybe. But what if something were to happen to the Boss, and Team Rocket is disbanded, or something? Would we all have to go off and live separate lives?”
“I sure hope not,” James said emphatically. “I’ve never even considered trying to put together a life without—all this. Especially not looking for a, a significant other.” He shot Meowth a warning look; a reminder to keep quiet about what the little feline had correctly guessed on that fateful day in Kalos (and, he’d said, suspected for far longer).
“Why? You could have gone with Jessabelle or Temacu or...oh, what was her name, Kate?”
He laughed. “Temacu found someone else, remember? Jessabelle—” Has an unfortunate habit of chasing me with a whip. I could never tell you that though...you’d never forgive yourself for bringing me home that day... “—Jessabelle wants a perfect, stuffy rich gentleman husband. And...I didn’t really know Kate well enough to, well, anyway, it would have meant leaving you behind, right? Breaking that promise I made back when we were still trainees. Plus, she really wasn’t, I don’t know, what I would look for in someone to fall in love with.”
Meowth gave him an exasperated look, then announced “I’m going for a walk,” before padding away through the brush.
“Well?” Jessie yawned, settling into her sleeping bag. “What would you look for?”
“Someone who wouldn’t freak to find out I’m, ah, a thief, for one thing,” he started. “That would stop any relationship right from the start. Someone who understands me, who wouldn’t think dressing up in fancy costumes was stupid. Or collecting bottlecaps, for that matter.”
“Mph. ‘S not stupid, just kinda silly. Nothin’ wrong with…” She yawned again, eyelids drooping.
“Someone with a sense of humor, who can appreciate a good pun.” James smiled. “Someone who likes roses.”
“Mmhmm.” Her eyes slid closed.
“Someone—Jess? You awake?”
No answer. She lay still, her face relaxed and glowing in the lantern light. He watched the sleeping bag fabric rise and fall with her breath for a moment, then continued in a softer voice.
“Someone strong, and beautiful. Someone who’s always sure of herself, in a battle or onstage. Someone who has my back and trusts me to have hers. Someone as graceful and elegant as a Ninetales, with the same fiery spirit. Someone with a glorious arch of bright hair, and eyes the deep violet-blue of the sky at dusk. Someone…” he gently covered her hand with his “...named Jessica.”
He glanced at her face, and jumped. Her eyes were wide open, and she was staring at him, looking stunned.
James felt his face heating up and knew he was turning red, but he couldn’t think of anything to say. Every fear that had kept him from telling her the whole truth before raced through his mind.
“Is—is it—true?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.
That got through to him. He’d had several reasons to keep his feelings for her a secret, but none of them were worth breaking her trust. Maintaining firm eye contact, he nodded.
“You really...mean it?” Were those tears at the corners of her eyes?
“Every word,” he said softly. Earnestly.
“Then—then you...Oh, James!” In one swift movement, she was out of her sleeping bag and had flung her arms around his shoulders. He caught her automatically, used to sudden hugs, but it took him a moment to realize that something was different this time—that she’d pressed her mouth to his, hasty in her excitement but definitely deliberate—she was kissing him.
Sensation crackled through him, like electricity but not painful at all, intense and unfamiliar but very pleasant. His eyelids fluttered shut, and his heart was hammering wildly—thunderous emotion, the still-coherent part of him thought, and with the familiar phrase came the full realization that this was Jessie, kissing him, and what it all meant. His eyes stung as tears squeezed out between his closed eyelids.
Jessie must have heard or felt him sniffle, because she withdrew from the kiss, her face filled with concern as he opened his eyes. She ran one gray-gloved thumb over his cheek, wiping away a teardrop, the kindness of her gesture only bringing more.
“Don’t worry, Jess,” he said, smiling as his voice wobbled a bit. “These are tears of joy.”
And he rested his chin on her shoulder and wept, overcome with happiness and love and the feeling of a long-awaited wish finally coming true. After a moment he felt a weight settle onto his shoulder; soon a slight shaking of her torso in his arms and a warm wetness on his back meant she was doing the same.
***
“All right, what’s goin’ on?”
Both humans jumped at the sound of Meowth’s voice. A large amount of hair bumped against James’s head as Jessie turned.
“I leave you twos alone for five minutes to answer the call o’ nature, come back and find you cryin’ in each other’s arms. What happened?”
“I...uh...we…” His face was turning hot again.
Jessie sat upright, seeming to regain her usual composure. “We’ll tell you in the morning. It’s late and I’m tired.”
Meowth squinted suspiciously at the two of them, but didn’t pry any further. He climbed into his own little sleeping bag and closed his eyes.
James gave Jessie’s hand an affectionate squeeze before turning to slide into his sleeping bag. “Goodnight, Jess.”
“Wait,” There was a rustling sound as she shifted in her sleeping bag, opening the zipper part way and reaching both arms through the gap toward him. Offering and requesting a hug.
Heart swelling with warmth and love, James obliged, sliding his arms around her and cuddling her close until they lay with their foreheads almost touching, wrapped in each other’s arms. He thought he might be too happy to sleep, with the girl of his dreams snuggled in his arms and his lips still tingling from their first kiss, but after a grumbling, half-asleep Meowth turned off the lantern he found he was more than cozy enough to drift off.
