I Killed Chief Odunukwe to Take Over His N900m property ―Suspect
Tumblr media
Emotion ran high at Ogombo forest, Ajah, Lagos, where the decomposing body of popular Abuja businessman, Chief Hyginus Odunukwe, was recovered, following a startling revelation by the prime suspect, Daniel Bob Ibeaji, on how the businessman was lured to his death. He further revealed how he conspired with three others: Arinze Igwe, 26; Solomon Cletus 30 and Israel Obigaremu, 35, to snuff life out of Odunukwe at Artican Beach Resort, in Ajah area of Lagos, on December 1, 2019. Ibeaji who claimed to have studied Medicine and Surgery in Edinburgh, the United Kingdom, disclosed that the deceased was first hit with an axe on the head, injected with an excess dose of a lethal Injection that weakened him before he was strangled. Recall that the deceased, who was into estate development and Gold mining, was approached by the prime suspect in respect of one of his buildings he displayed for sale, in Abuja. Late Odunukwe, left his Ikoyi, Lagos abode on December 1, 2019, having informed his family that he was going to meet the supposed buyer but he never returned home. His body which was cut into pieces was recovered by operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad, ZIS of the Zone 2 Command, last week, in a canal in Ogombo forest along Ajah road, while his 4- Runner SUV was tracked to Artican Beach Resort. Why I killed him – Prime suspect Explaining why the late businessman was murdered, Ibeaji, who was paraded by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone 2, AIG Ahmed Iliyasu, at the canal where the victim’s body was recovered, said, “I killed him because I wanted to take the property worth 900 million naira. “Lust for material things made me kill him. I met him last September in Abuja, through an advert for the sale of the property in question. Later, I called him on the phone to inform him that I was ready to make payment and he told me to come to Lagos. “That Sunday afternoon, when I was sure he was on his way to Artican Beach Resort, I instructed one of my boys to bring a bag for me. After he signed the documents of the building in question, in the garden, I told him to come inside the hotel room so as to give him the money. “But when he came, I started shouting on him to hand the documents over to me but he insisted I must first pay. At that point, one of my colleagues brought the bag containing some cash, as Chief bent down to check the money, I hit an axe on his head. “We dragged him to the toilet, injected him with two doses of diazepam and he slept off”. I wanted to use the signed document to claim the property as mine and later sell it”, he said. “Lust for money made me do this”. Other cases During preliminary investigation, he was discovered to have been arrested in connection with two other similar cases. One of them was in respect of the murder of a Commissioner in Bayelsa State, one Honourable Depologa, whose remains were found along Abuja road. His murder as gathered, occurred a week after his encounter with Ibeaji, at Ibeto Hotel, Abuja. Obeaji, however, denied culpability in the death, when asked. Rather he said, “Yes, I met him at Ibeto hotel in respect of a block of flat which he intended to sell at Durumi, Abuja. We did not agree on the price as he rejected the N220 million offer I told him”. Asked where he would have raised the N220 million, had the commissioner accepted his offer, he replied, ” I am a miner”. The second victim according to the AIG was that of one Jude Efule, a Property Developer in Abuja. Efulue, according to the AIG, “ also swam into Bob’s net. He held him captive in an apartment and forced him to sign a prepared document transferring ownership of the victim’s property to him. “He also discovered that the victim had N9 million in his account. His plan was to kill Jude after sweeping his account. But with the help of neighbours who called the police, Bob and his boys were apprehended and charged to court accordingly” – I was promised N2m – One of his accomplices, Solomon Cletus, also confessed to have bagged the remains of Odunukwe after they confirmed that he was dead. He said, “Ibeaji, promised to pay me N2 million at the end of the deal. We were able to smuggle the body out of the hotel with the help of one of its staff, Arinze Igwe. He took us through the back door. “Thereafter, the body was kept inside a bag and with the help of one of the hotel staff, we smuggled the bag out of the hotel”. On his part, Israel Obigaremu, who claimed to be an Uber driver, said he had no hand in the murder of Odunukwe. He explained that “Arinze only brought the car to my house. “He said it was his master’s, who travelled out of the country. He promised to come and pick it the next day. It was after the arrest that I discovered the owner of the car was murdered”. Iliyasu, therefore, cautioned Nigerians to be cautious of information they post on social media, alerting that criminals used such information to get their targets. To other criminal elements in Lagos and Ogun States, he warned them to leave the states for good or have safe fate befall them. He said, “I am sounding this clear warning to other criminals out there, that the Zone 2 Police Command, comprising Lagos and Ogun States, has no space for hoodlums to hibernate. The atmosphere will never be conducive for them”. Source: vanguardngr Read the full article

Jonathan: Africa Can’t Replace Military Coups with Civilian Coups
Tumblr media
Former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said Africa could not afford to replace military dictatorship with civilian autocracy. Jonathan warned politicians in the country and Africa as a whole against killing and maiming fellow citizens in the bid to gain power. He stated these on Saturday at Okada, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, during the 17th Convocation of the Igbinedion University, Okada (IOU). The former president, who was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Science by the university, spoke against the backdrop of his observations at the November 16 governorship elections in his home state of Bayelsa and Kogi State. “Let me plead with my fellow politicians to stop killing people and destroying property because they want to own offices,”he said. Jonathan said Africa’s survival was currently endangered by what he called an increasing tendency for political coups. He described what happened in Bayelsa and Kogi states at the last governorship polls as heart rendering, saying they fall short of democratic standards. The former president had been accused by a section of his party, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of conniving with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State to defeat PDP in the state. He was believed to be venting his anger over the outcome of the party’s primary election that produced Douye Diri as the PDP candidate. Though, he did not address the allegation of antiparty activities, Jonathan,  spoke extempore while addressing some of the alleged irregularities that occurred at the elections even though he had a prepared speech for the occasion. “What happened in the last governorship elections in my state, Bayelsa, and Kogi State is unacceptable.,” he said. “Especially in Kogi State, where a young lady was burnt alive in her house. This is something that should not happen in any normal society. Something is fundamentally wrong with our political system,” he stated. Jonathan, who said most African leaders were disturbed by the situation in both states, said, “Only yesterday in Ndjamena, capital of Chad Republic, most of us, former Heads of State, Presidents, former Presidents, Vice Presidents, were discussing the politics of our continent and we came to a conclusion that the way African politics is going, we are merely replacing military coups with civilian coups, which cannot sustain the continent.” He called on politicians to play politics by the rules in the overall interest of the people. Jonathan also used the occasion to commend the founder of Iginedion University, the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, for his perseverance in sustaining the institution over the years, adding that government alone cannot fund education. He sad no nation could develop above its education, emphasising that both private individuals and the government must play their roles to ensure that the educational standard of the country is improved for the socio-economic development of the nation. He  also appealed to Igbinedion to resuscitate his Okada Airline to boost the nation’s aviation sector, saying Nigerians want it back. The former president told the graduating students to remain focused, as the survival of the country rests on their shoulders. He said he was convinced that the knowledge acquired during their stay at the university would help to prepare them to face the challenges ahead. Commending Igbinedion for investing in education, Jonathan stated, “Anybody who invests in education is obviously helping to shoulder the responsibility of preparing the country for development and progress. While the venture may become profitable along the line, I have always said that those who invest in education are driven first by an inner passion that is beyond the chase for profit.” He said Igbinedion’s legacy as a successful African entrepreneur was captured in the story of the birth and growth of the university, which according to him, has continued to dictate the pace for other private universities in the past two decades. “I can only say that the Esama made this great investment for altruistic and patriotic reasons,” Jonathan said, adding,“As a hugely successful businessman and entrepreneur, Chief Igbinedion did not need an investment in the education sector to validate his place in society. I believe he did that because he wanted to give back to the society, and, by so doing, lay a solid foundation for the future of our country.” Jonathan urged the youth to deploy their ingenuity and energy to innovations that would improve the society. He told them, “The innovations you see today on your mobile phones, computers, internet, social media, automobiles and home appliances are all products of diligent research and experiments sometimes carried out by very young people globally. “The Mark Zukerbergs, the Sergey Brins, the Larry Pages of this world are all celebrated heroes of today’s social media and internet revolution. They got to where they are because they dared to dream and chased their dreams of seeking answers to society’s problems, mainly as undergraduates. They and their inventions should serve as the role models and motivations for the youth.” Earlier, Igbinedion, who is the university’s Chancellor, said the institution in its first 20 years had graduated over 1,000 doctors. Deputy Chancellor of the university and former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, who spoke on behalf of his father, disclosed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Nigeria needed about 237,000 doctors for an efficient healthcare delivery but only 35,000 doctors were available. He called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to increase the admission quota of the institution to be able to meet the health needs of the citizenry. On his part, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Professor Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah, tasked the students to use the knowledge gathered over the years to shape the country. Abdullah asked them to be promoters of peace and one Nigeria as well as agents of social change, noting that the future of the nation is in their hands.

The Federal Government remains defiant in its decision to pursue the establishment of cattle colonies across the country in spite of the widespread criticism and push back, stating that as from next week, work would commence towards attaining the goal. According to TORING reports, Audu Ogbeh, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who disclosed this when he visited the agriculture and veterinary complex of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, made it clear that states which were not interested in the idea would be exempted. Following killings by herdsmen in various parts of the country, the government had proposed the establishment of cattle colonies as the long-term solution. But some states, including Benue, Ogbeh’s state, have strongly rejected the idea. Defending the proposal, Ogbeh said it was part of the resolutions by the committee set up to find lasting a solution to the killings. “One of the most topical issues we have today is that of farmers and herdsmen clashes. “If we do not deal with it quickly, we run the risk of damaging the harmony and the co-existence of Nigeria as a country. The killings are getting too many. “In our attempt to solve the problem, we have proffered certain solutions but perhaps we were not sensitive enough to Nigeria’s fragile sensitivities and suspicions. “When we spoke of colonies, we were immediately greeted with reactions that this was an attempt to cease Nigeria’s land and give to the Fulani to colonize. “The intention is not for Fulani or anyone to colonize any territory. It is to provide a haven for cattle to graze in peace under controlled environments to prevent the conflicts between farmers and herdsmen. “Only yesterday, a committee was set up by the vice-president with members, most of them, state governors discussing this matter and resolving that states that are interested will begin work on this matter as soon as next week.’’ Meanwhile, a Niger-Delta youth group has reacted to the federal government’s cattle colony idea, requesting the establishment of an ‘oil and gas colony’ to balance things up. Youths from Ijaw extraction in the nine states of the Niger Delta, while condemning the killings going on across the country by suspected Fulani herdsmen, called on the government to rise up to the challenge and also proposed an oil and gas colony for the Niger-Delta region. The youths made their position known under the auspices of Niger Delta Youth Leadership Forum. The National President, PANDLEAF, Richard Akinaka, expressed these positions during a press conference heralding the inauguration of the Bayelsa State chapter of PANDLEAF in Yenagoa on Saturday. He said the issue of establishing colonies for herdsmen was wrong, insisting that it was the responsibility of herdsmen as private business people to shoulder the responsibility of advancing their business interests and not that of the government. Akinaka said, “As a people, we have taken that position that herdsmen are private business people. Some of us who have private businesses, take private and personal responsibility to advance our business interests. “If herdsmen want land and spaces to do their business, they should acquire them within any of the states and do their business as it demands the way it is done elsewhere all over the world where you have people get ranches for their cattle and people go there to buy cattle for consumption purposes. “So, that is the best thing to do. Government does not need to buy land for a private businessman and all of that. But if that is what the government wants to do, we are asking for oil and gas colony for our people too. “We should be given extra reserve right to take full responsibility of our oil and gas industry because that is our area, that is our environment. “We suffer environmental problems. So, if they want colony for their cattle, we want colony for our oil and gas business.” He also advised members of the Niger Delta Avengers to always engage in intellectual struggle in advancing their agitations rather than resorting to old-fashioned idea of armed struggle.
