Kilkenny: Generosity, Craftsmanship and More, 5 Reasons to be Proud to be from Kilkenny

(photo: independent.ie) Kilkenny is famous for hurling, its nightlife and its medieval features. For hundreds of years, the people of Kilkenny have worked tirelessly to make the city and the county as a whole what it is today. In this blog post, while touching on the aspects Kilkenny is typically most renowned for, I will also be aiming to strike a balance between the excellence of County Kilkenny, and the truly special kind-heartedness and dedication of the people of Kilkenny. Before I begin, my name is Cathal. I was born and bred in Kilkenny but must admit, I’ve only began to appreciate the county and its people to its full since I moved out 4 years ago and started looking at the county from a different lens. Now, for the 5 reasons: 1. Generosity of the People I was particularly keen to begin this post by expressing how proud I feel and how proud the people of Kilkenny should feel about the unity and generosity that has been on display throughout its history, and especially during my lifetime. Kilkenny, like any other city, has experienced its fair share of tragedies. Another difficult Winter for many people in Kilkenny reminded me of the unity and goodwill that exists throughout the county, as friends come together in times of grief offering synergistic support and softening the burdens for grieving families. In particular, Kilkenny has led the way throughout Ireland in fighting the existing stigma that haunted the country for many years surrounding mental illness. The formation of Teac Tom, a non-profit organisation which supports individuals and their families who are affected by suicide, or contemplating suicide, is one of the best modern examples of the generosity of the people of Kilkenny, with many making unselfish contributions to Teac Tom over the past 5 years. Not only has Teac Tom helped families in crisis, but it has united people from across the county to come together, forge friendships and fight to end the stigma against mental illness.

(photo: thethomashayestrust.com) The philanthropy and goodwill of the Kilkenny people was once again on display when they contributed to a large portion of the €100,000 raised for Alice Taylor, a popular and kind-hearted Kilkenny woman herself, whose family and friends fund-raised for her medical treatment. 2. Global Influence The people of Kilkenny are inherently adventurous. Their warmth, friendliness and good humour not only makes Kilkenny a very welcoming place for tourists and immigrants, but also makes it very easy for Kilkenny people to travel the world and live in any city on the planet. Not only have Kilkenny people created a wonderful environment in Kilkenny, but those with Kilkenny heritage have been creating similar environments across the world, notably in the USA, the UK and Australia. Indeed, it’s not just those with roots tracing back to Kilkenny; there are many who were born and bred in Kilkenny now working on the frontline in hospitals saving lives in the UK, the US and Australia.  Those with Kilkenny heritage include actor George Clooney and former US House Speaker, Paul Ryan.

(photo: Vanity Fair) 3. Sport This one is a no brainer. Kilkenny is perhaps most famous across Ireland for its hurling success, as they are most decorated team in the country. Almost every person in Kilkenny has great pride in the county hurling team, and even the odd few out who don’t could never deny the physical and mental health benefits hurling has for Kilkenny’s youth in particular.

(photo: the42.ie) However, there is a lot more to sports in Kilkenny than hurling. Individuals like Ducksy Walsh and Willie Mullins achieved nationwide and world success in their respective fields. The Kilkenny District League is a high standard soccer league, with Evergreen FC in particular being one of the strongest teams year in, year out at Junior level nationwide. The contribution that soccer clubs like Evergreen have made to society in Kilkenny is incalculable and invaluable. 4. Craftsmanship I have already touched upon the innovative ideas that the people of Kilkenny have engineered to combat social challenges within the society.  Now, It’s time to give praise to the people of Kilkenny who have showed their creativity with not just their minds, but their hands as well.

(photo: The Irish Times) Smithwicks is one of the most popular beers in Ireland, having originated from Kilkenny. Outside of Ireland, “Kilkenny” beer itself is very popular. This is a very similar ale to Smithwicks, however the name was changed to allow non-Irish to pronounce it more easily. Kilkenny, of course, has a vibrant crafts scene outside of the alcohol industry. (photo: TripAdvisor) Kilkenny has its very own design centre right beside the castle, where a wide array of crafts are housed and sold. 5. Kilkenny Attracts People from Allover Ireland and the World.  There isn’t a weekend that goes by where you can’t see a stag or hen party from another region in Ireland partying on the streets of Kilkenny. Although we tend to laugh them off or ignore them; Kilkenny people should be very proud of the friendly and warm environment that they have created which attracts so much “investment” from all across the country.

(photo: cocktails.ie) Further to this, Fáilte Ireland claims that over 300,000 people visited Kilkenny City alone from abroad in 2017. This is approximately ten times the population of Kilkenny City itself. While we tend to not focus on this too much, this investment is a huge boost to the local economy, and Kilkenny people deserve the credit for contributing to a county which is so attractive both nationally and globally.
