How to Trek at Kiliyur Falls at Yercaud ?
The trek to Kiliyur at Yercaud isn’t long; however, what actually makes up for the short distance is adventure. The Kiluyur falls is separated by only 3.2km from the famous Yercaud Lake. The Kiliyur kind of trail is great even for those without any prior trekking experience. Trekkers need to walk on the bare metal staircase with rails on either sides, or rough solid rocks forming the forest floor. The staircase goes down endlessly into the depths of the lush green valleys, coffee estates and a queen’s royal bath.
The trail begins from the Yercaud Lake. There is a sign near it that directs you to the Kiliyur Falls. If you want to do the trekking by yourself, you need to cover the normal trail of 4km, usually open to the general public. From the calm lake nestled in the hills, a narrow path takes you onward. As most of the hilly land has been turned to coffee estates, which are privately owned, don’t run into trouble with unauthorized trespassing into the estates. A local guide can provide information on more intricate trails, in addition to other exciting trekking zones in the Shevaroy range of hills. This means you can have a more panoramic view of the falls, trek to the bed of the falls for a rejuvenating swim, or walk all the way (for 1.5 hours in total) down where they crash into strong rocks. However, there aren’t many takers for this save for the advanced trekkers.
With the sounds of thousands of bird chirping overhead, the beauty of Killiyur combines rich vegetation, mountain and the deep blue. The trail at certain points can start to slope and turn out so steep such that you need to hold firmly the roots of the trees and plants and continue to tread the path carefully.
A series of beige steps falls into the thick forest. Take the first right to reach the falls. These stairs designed between tall trees and a valley so sharply inclined that make you feel as though you are hanging precariously or suspended in thin air. That’s an awesome feel.
Be reminded that Kiliyur is a seasonal waterfall and not a naturally formed spring. During summer it goes completely dry and you’ll be in for disappointment if you plan for a summer trip. Come monsoons, the region presents a different picture altogether against the backdrop of the heavy rains that hit the region.
The Kiliyur trek is a great way to learn something of the unique and rich fauna in reptiles and lizards such as the black and orange rock lizards and bronze back tree snakes.
