This is so awesome! I can kind of see now why ppl might ship Kiara and Drake. I think it's the concept that if Drake had more character growth, they would have been a good opposites attract couple. I think why the whole Kiara x Drake thing and Penelope x Maxwell thing was so random to me was they didn't go anywhere with it. The dialogue for both Kiara and Penelope's attraction to Drake and Maxwell was only in the story so that the reader's could get jealous and say, "no he's MINE!" and than it all looked silly if you had mc romance Liam or Hana and by TRF played out, 5 years later, ALL the other LIs still haven't moved on from mc.
I was honestly just curious to see if you thought if some random lower class OC was to stumble into Kiara, if it would be possible for Kiara to fall for them. (I think she could fall for someone if like you said, they had a drive to learn and were respectful to her). Tbh, my view on Kiara has completely changed by reading your essays and now I'm genuinely curious of this character who is misunderstood and isn't really in the books enough.
Would you be in the mood to do a quick hc of what it would be like to romance Kiara? Like what kind of person would you have to be to catch her eye? If you're bad at learning languages would that be a turn off of hers? I just didn't understand what she saw in Drake lol it felt so random when they wrote that in lol
Hello, @masked-alien-lesbian! Thank you so much for another lovely Kiara ask - I love talking about her, Hana and Liam xD
So! HC's on Kiara as a love interest? I'm game!! 😃 (It's going to be long tho...I am incapable of writing anything quick sorry!! 🙈)
So I had my own thoughts, but I also often discuss Kiara (and our other common fave characters) with a group of close friends (thank you so much for the additional inputs, @cassiopeiacorvus, @thecapturedafrique and @mand-delemonde! 🤗🤗🤗). I found that we agreed on several things when it came to writing Kiara romantically, and the kind of person we liked to pair her with. These things I found the most important:
A Respect for Diplomacy.
I feel like even if they don't show an inclination, it's alright as long as they do not look down on the value of diplomacy and diplomatic relations.
I can see her even with someone who may be militaristic in their approach, as long as they value diplomacy. Having someone who is their opposite in approach can be beneficial as a match as that allows for different perspectives but there should be a healthy respect from both sides.
An Enthusiasm for Learning.
I feel like they don't need to even be the most knowledgeable person in the room, but there should be a willingness to be open to different perspectives. Kiara is herself someone who likes to learn new things and educate herself. I feel like she would want someone who shows that kind of energy and respects her love for her pursuits as well.
An Appreciation for Different Cultures.
I can see her with someone who likes travel, loves to explore different cultures, and yes - would like to learn languages. I don't think they need to be polyglots like her and her family, but someone she can talk about nuances of language with who would find joy in those discussions, and not look at it as some weird interest, or look down on her for it, or doubt her proficiency (Madeleine, the MC and Maxwell do this at least once each in the original series).
From what I've seen in canon, she has never shown any disdain for people who don't know French as well as she does (eg. In Lythikos in TRR1, she is only offended when you ask her to sleep with you in French). People in fandom have called her a snob for this skill, and the MC in TRR3 was allowed to do the same...but tbh she doesn't show any snobbery through this skill or when other people aren't as good at it. So I can definitely see her happier with someone who is willing to explore different cultures with respect and enthusiasm, than someone who doesn't care or looks upon these pursuits with disdain.
Physicality
So this section, and the next, is where I get into what the narrative has to say about Kiara's feelings for Drake. The first time we get a hint of that is when Kiara gets flustered seeing Drake shirtless in TRR2 Ch3 during the barn raising (if you choose to partner with Drake). She also pays attention to the fit of his suit, as you can see in TRR3 Ch 7 when a single Drake comes with the group to her province. In TRH, she talks of liking more rugged, down-to-earth men if the MC is married to Drake. So at least in terms of men that's what canon claims she may like, but that can always change!
In terms of women...canon doesn't say much about her sexuality either way (except that she initially seems shocked during Savannah's bachelorette if you ask her to play bed-wed-dead with female options, but she does proceed then to pick options! Olivia to sleep with, Penelope to marry). So anything is game!! In my personal headcanon (and I mention this in a story of mine titled "The Perfect Gift") that she is "woefully specific" in the kind of man she wants, but finds herself attracted to a wide range of women. So physicality and personality wise I can see her with a wide range of women, ranging from very masculine presenting to ultra feminine presenting femmes.
Loyalty to Friends and Family.
I have begun to realize that very often fandom tends to limit Kiara's feelings for Drake to just the previous point, and assumes that canonically all she feels for him is just plain lust. I feel this ignores something Kiara herself tells us in TRR2 Ch4, during the garden party. There, Kiara tells us that her fondness for Drake began when they were younger - seeing his loyalty and dedication to his friend Liam.
Kiara herself is affectionate in her own way towards her friends and family, though she also employs "tough love". Very often she guides and defends Penelope and Zeke, even though they sometimes frustrate her. She also is from a family that shows an abundance of love and care for each other, and I would think she would appreciate a spouse who would appreciate and value her family as well. So yes, I can see her highly valuing loyalty and filial relationships, especially healthy balanced filial relationships. I cannot see her with someone who would view the people she loves and values with disdain.
And while Kiara herself may not require this as a character, I would like to see the people around her show the same loyalty and love towards her as well. Unfortunately in canon, even Penelope and Ezekiel - her own best friend and brother - don't give back the same energy that she gives out for them. So my hc always is that the person she is with gels well with her family and friends, but also gives her the attention and focus and care she deserves.
--
In terms of turn offs for Kiara, a big turn-off I can see for her based on canon would be people overstepping their boundaries, or showing ostentatious behaviour designed to show off their power. She initially allies with both Olivia and Madeleine and different points in the series, but shows visible frustration when they get drunk on their own power and abuse their position. I can see this play out even more intensely in a romantic situation. Kiara won't suffer fools or people who play too many games.
I don't think not knowing languages would be a turn off, but not showing a basic interest or at least a healthy respect, for her interests will. I cannot see her staying with a person who looks down on learning languages, or cultural diversity, for too long. I feel like she needs to be happy talking to her partner and engaging them in conversation, and you can't have that with someone who may look down on your passions.
--
Now to get to the point about Drake! In some ways I'm kind of okay with the randomness of it - after all, the team was on a bit of a "pair the spares" spree in TRR2, where every LI got an alternative LI (TRR was somewhat unique in this respect - very often alternatives would be given only to whichever LI the team deemed the least popular). Clearly the only alternative LI they had planned somewhat was Olivia and Liam, so of course Driara (and Maxwell x Penelope, which was introduced in TRR2 Ch 6, and didn't last very long) would feel a little random.
However, given Kiara is a very practical woman in canon itself...one could still figure out a way to make such a scenario fit with her character. I could always headcanon that she couldn't show any indication of her feelings in the social season where she was a competitor, and it would make sense! And now that the competition is over and the Prince made his final choice, she could feel free to pursue or at least interact with the man she really liked.
Back when I shipped Drake and Kiara, I thought there could be potential in terms of an opposites-attract scenario. I liked the idea of Kiara nursing a secret fondness for earthy, rugged men, as well as the possibility of Drake realizing that not all nobles were evil through someone like Kiara. And there were some scenes at least in TRR2 where Drake seemed like he could view her differently (and be a total weirdo about it) like the option in the prank scene, where he could leave a cute note to her.
Had the narrative actually cared about Kiara, and viewed Drake as someone who needed to grow from his own prejudices, I believe there was a possibility for a good relationship there.
Unfortunately the narrative dislikes proving Drake wrong, and doesn't mind throwing Kiara under the bus...which was why, when Drake stans spewed their racist vitriol all over Kiara during TRR3, the end result we got in TRR3 (where they "confirmed" how much Drake disliked Kiara) was equally racist. That is ultimately why I would never, ever go for Driara...but there was some potential if Drake showed any interest in growing and evolving beyond his puny mindset.
Above all to me, I need the person I pair Kiara up with, to center her as much in their relationship as she would them. Which is why Drake is not even worth considering as a partner for her, IMO...and why I wouldn't go for Penelope either even though she and Kiara are a popular fandom pair. Kiara's friendship with Penelope centers too much around her, and Penelope (in canon especially) brings none of that energy when Kiara would most need it.
To sum it up? I feel like personality wise I wouldn't mind someone who could balance out her practicality and rational bent of mind with a more emotional approach, and someone who would take pride and joy in her interests and achievements. Someone she can have fun talking to, and someone who would fiercely protect and defend her as much as she would do so for them. (In my universe, that's basically Hana 😄)
I hope this helped and didn't confuse you too much!! 🙈🙈

Alt+Nerd= <3 Pope x (f) reader
| Warnings:
| Summary: The bubbly alt girl falls for Pope, the nerdy and serious guy.
| (a/n): I had a good reaction to the alt reader x obx so I wanted to continue that a little bit :) I'm so tired so if this is awful I apologize but I had fun writing it so that's really what counts right? Not proof read.
Tumblr media
Leaning up against the lockers you watched as the whole pouge friend group walked past, sighing to yourself. Since freshman year you had had a thing for the smart one, Pope. He was so cute and serious and when he got all serious it made him even cuter and more adorable in your eyes. He was misunderstood and looked over a lot for John B and JJ. And even when he wasn't being looked over, he rarely noticed when girls hit on him. Green flags tbh.
But this brings you back to today...as you watched them all walk passed you knew you were probably not his type considering he was dating Kiara but a girl can dream. You had your black and blue hair straightened and pulled back into pigtails, neon green glasses, black cropped hoodie, skinny jeans, and orange nike airs on. "Hey! You ready for class?" your best friends voice snapped you out of your trance.
"Oh yeah, sorry," you shook your head and smiled before grabbing your bag and walking to AP biology. Tapping your pen on the desk, you day dreamed as the teacher went over the previous test. This was your favorite class but today you were just distracted. Before you knew it, the bell rang and you realized you hadn't taken a single note. Shit you thought. But that's when you had the idea... "Hey Pope!" you yelled after the boy as you ran to catch up to him.
"Uh...hi?" he looked at you confused. Honestly fair considering you have had probably two conversations with him in total. "What's up?"
"Oh, well...I kinda have a problem," you began. "Is there anyway you can go over the science notes from today with me? I didn't quite get all of it." Correction, I was staring at you like a total stalker for the entire class and wasn't paying any attention.
"Oh uh, yeah sure. Meet me at lunch and I'll give you my notes," Pope said as you nodded.
"Lucky I have the smartest guy in school in my class!" you responded cheerfully.
"Well technically Thomas Jennings is the number 1 in our class so he would be the smartest. I'm probably top five-" he rambled on before you cut him off.
"Pope," you stated. "Take the compliment and go with it. A cute girl is calling you smart."
As lunch rolled around, you met up with him and you copied down his notes from the day. "I like your glasses by the way." This snapped you out of you concentration.
"I'm sorry?" you asked not quite processing.
"Your glasses," he smiled. "They're cool. I like them."
"Oh," blushing hard core, you smiled. "Thank you!"
"Sorry if this is weird," he started, scratching the back of his neck. "You remind me of someone."
"Yeah? And who might that be?" you put your pen down and smiled. You were in the conversation now. Can't take this for granted.
"Abbey from NCIS," this time he came across as shy.
"Wait, no way! Thank you so much! I've always loved her and Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. I think that's where my style comes from. But Oh my God Thank you!" you knew you were rambling but fuck it. "Wait you watch NCIS?"
"Oh yeah, I love that show," Pope chuckled at your enthusiasm. "I always wanted to be like Duckie. I want to be a coroner."
"That's so dope," you smiled. "I want to go into forensics."
"That's not people's usual reaction to that," he stated.
You could stare into his eyes all day, good God, "Hey, we should meet up at the wreck after school. I mean if you want."
"Yeah! My friends and I were already planning on meeting up there later," he started. "You can come with us."
"Ok! I would love that!," this time it was your turn to chuckle. "Maybe after we can have some alone time? Just the two of us?"
"Wait...what?" the quizzical look he had on his face was adorable.
"Here," you said grabbing his arm and writing your number down. "I've been flirting with you for the past half hour for the record." You winked at him and started grabbing your things.
"I-I'll text you," he called after you and JJ looked over at him giving him a thumbs up. You knew he was watching you leave as you walked out of the cafeteria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Time Skip After Shool~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as you got home, you got ready to meet up with the pouges and considering this was the first time, and you were hanging out with pope, you had to look decent. Deciding on ripped black skinny jeans and a blue halter top with David Bowie vans high tops, you threw your hair into a half up half down bun and put on some lashes. Your green glasses still adorning your face. Dabbing on some lip gloss, you took one final look at yourself in the mirror before heading out.
Pope's friends were really nice and very chill honestly! Kiara was standoffish at first but quickly warmed up. And you learned Sarah Cameron was nothing like you expected! "So Ms. (Y/n)," JJ exclaimed throwing his arm over your shoulder. "Pope has told us a lot about you." Pope was signaling for him to shut the fuck up but that's not what JJ does.
"Has he now?" you giggled looking over at him.
"I wouldn't say a alot..." Pope was trying to hide his face now.
"Really?" JJ began. "So she isn't the cool, colored hair girl who is the only person who is better in science than you?"
"And she isn't the sweet and talkative girl who reminds you of...what's that show again?" Kiara chimed in laughing and using hand motions.
"Ok, ok, leave him alone," John B very kindly said. "And the show is NCIS."
"That's right!" everyone exclaimed at once embarrassing him and making you laugh and look at him sweetly.
"So exactly how smart are you to be better at Pope in something?" Sarah asked putting a french fry in her mouth.
"Oh, um," you were blushing now from the attention. "I'm just freakishly good at science. He's still smarter than I am." He smiled and shook his head at you. After a couple hours the two of you snuck off, but not without whistles from the others. Walking down to the shoreline, having your feet touch the water as you looked at the shells and things washing up. "Thank you for inviting me to hang out with you and your friends."
"Oh, it's no problem," he stated. "Thanks for writing your number on my arm. JJ was proud." This caused you to chuckle a little bit.
"Earlier you said I wasn't what you expected," you said softly. "You aren't what I expected either."
This time his facial expression was nervous as he snapped his head to look at you, "In a good way or a bad way?"
Smiling widely up at him, "In the best way."
"(Y/n)?"
"Pope?"
"Do I have permission to kiss you?" he asked slightly awkwardly.
"Always," you responded sweetly. As your lips met, it was everything you had dreamed of. His hand came to rest on your face gently as he pulled you in closer causing you to throw your arms around his neck. The nerdy guy kissing the goth girl in the moonlight? How many cliches can you guys check off at once? But none the less, this was the perfect night.
Disbelief
(Maxwell Beaumont x Olivia Nevrakis) in a choices Crackship drabble
Inspired by the prompt: No one believes we're dating
A/N My writer's block finally eased up! Woo! This idea was originally part of my Crackship series involving these two, but I decided to go a different route to their reveal. I still wanted to write this scene for them and thought, why not share it? So here we go, an alternate universe within an alternate universe 🤣
Tumblr media
Masterlist
"I've got to find a man." Penelope wailed.
While the other ladies of the court expressed their sympathy, Olivia merely rolled her eyes.
"Madeleine told me again that I needed to find someone after my mess up at the fashion show." Penelope slumped in her chair. "Even after I doubled the donation, she still insisted I make a match before the wedding shower."
Her violet eyes drifted over to where Riley was talking to Drake and Maxwell. A slight frown formed on her lips.
"I don't care what Riley thinks! I'm going to ask Maxwell to enter into a courtship with me." She glanced at Kiara. "And I think you should ask Drake!"
Hana's jaw dropped.
"Penelope!" Kiara gasped. "I don't think I--"
"You have such a crush on him!" Penelope argued. "Isn't it time to finally give in to your fan--"
"Tais-toi!" Kiara exclaimed, looking about to make certain no other nobles overheard their conversation.
"Perhaps," Hana gently interjected, "we should instead focus on why you think Maxwell is right for you."
Kiara breathed a little easier now that the conversation wasn't focused upon her own hopeless love life.
Penelope practically beamed as she went into a list of reasons Maxwell would be a good match.
"He's so sweet! He's always smiling, even though he's stuck with a scandal in his house." She sighed while staring at him. "He's also kinda dreamy. Those blue eyes of his are to die for! And--"
"And he's taken." Olivia declared.
Three pairs of eyes blinked at her in confusion.
"Taken?" Penelope repeated in disbelief. "What do you mean?"
Olivia finished off her glass of wine. Standing up, she addressed the clueless trio with a bit of smugness.
"I mean he is already in a committed relationship."
"With whom?" Kiara asked.
Penelope released a little cry that she attempted to muffle with her hand.
"It's Riley! He's in a relationship with her! That's why she didn't return to America after being caught with Tariq!"
Hana shook her head. "I don't think that's--"
"It isn't Riley!" Olivia snapped. "It's me."
"You what?" Penelope asked.
"I'm the one dating Maxwell!" Olivia announced.
Silence fell upon the group.
Then, a snicker slipped out.
Kiara and Penelope began to laugh to the point tears twinkled in their eyes.
"You and Maxwell Beaumont?" Kiara guffawed.
"Like that would ever happen!" Penelope wiped her eyes as more giggles burst forth.
Hana seemed to be the only one noticing Olivia's short fuse igniting. The longer the two ladies laughed and joked about how ridiculous the notion was, the more menacing Olivia became.
"Why is that funny?" She demanded.
"Because!" Penelope exclaimed. "He's super sweet and just adorable."
"You're more..." Kiara tried to find the right word to describe the duchess.
"Stoic?" Penelope offered.
"Hmm." Kiara tapped her chin in thought. "She is that, yet much more emotional."
The two pondered the notion a little longer.
"You don't like fun." Penelope declared.
"Excuse me?" Olivia bit out.
"Of course she does!" Hana argued. "Just because your idea of fun doesn't match up with hers doesn't mean she--"
Olivia silenced her with a slash of her hand. Though she was grateful for Hana's defence, she was more than capable of fighting her own battles.
"Regardless of what you think," Olivia hissed. "Maxwell and I are together."
"Do the Beaumont's owe you something?" Penelope teased.
Kiara laughed at the notion. "It must be an enormous amount of debt some ancestor of theirs was unable to pay."
"Unlike you," Olivia leaned forward, bracing her hands upon the table, "I don't need any reason to have a man want me."
She straightened her shoulders then smoothed her black dress down. "Maxwell's always been in love with me."
With that, she turned on her heel to join his group.
***************
"I'm so sick of these functions." Drake grumbled. "It'd be different if they actually fed us instead of these little appetizers they occasionally send out."
"I think it's called an amuse-bouche." Riley told him.
"Yeah well, I'm not amused." He mumbled.
"It's supposed to awaken your palate." Maxwell added.
When both Riley and Drake looked at him curiously, he shrugged.
"I heard it on some cooking show."
"Makes sense." Riley teased him. "I mean, it isn't like you grew up with all this fancy dining or anything."
"The lessons were boring." Maxwell explained. "But the food rarely failed to please. "
"Uh huh." Drake rolled his eyes. "Anyway. When do we actually get to have dinner?"
"Probably after Liam and Madeleine are done talking to our hosts." Riley nodded toward the far side of the room.
The trio quietly observed the group speaking to Liam. The way he stood, firm and unmoving let them know that negotiations were not going well.
"Ugh." Drake slumped back against the wall. "We are never getting out of here."
"We're going to starve!" Maxwell clutched his growling stomach. "I can already see a faint light growing brighter in the distance."
"We could always sneak out for a snack." Riley whispered.
Drake and Maxwell perked up at that suggestion.
"I'm game." Drake whispered back. "I hate to leave Liam, but the needs of the many and all that."
"I'll grab Hana." Riley added.
"I'll get Liv." Maxwell turned to leave to do that very thing, only to find himself yanked back by Drake.
"Why in the hell would you get Olivia?" He asked.
Maxwell blinked.
"Um, because she's my girlfriend."
Riley and Drake stared at him for two heartbeats before they burst out laughing.
"You almost had me there Beaumont!" Drake slapped him on the back.
"Your face!" Riley spluttered. "You were so serious!"
"But she is!" Maxwell argued. "Olivia and I have been in a relationship for a while now."
"Uh huh." Drake snickered. "And Liam's decided to make me his fashion expert."
Riley giggled even harder at that notion.
"It's the truth!" Maxwell declared. "I've been in love with Liv for ages. She realized we should be together and--"
"Stop!" Drake pleaded, doubling over.
"I can't breathe!" Riley gasped.
"Guys, I'm telling you the--"
Maxwell paused when Olivia slipped her arm around his waist.
"Kiss me." She demanded.
Without missing a beat, he pulled her into a long and tender kiss.
Riley, Drake, and the ladies Olivia had left behind stared in astonishment at the sight of the two entwined.
When the kiss came to an end, Olivia's smug smirk flashed.
"Want to get out of here?" She asked him.
"With you?" Maxwell's dimpled grin appeared. "Always."
She stepped out of his arms while glaring triumphantly at Penelope.
Lacing his fingers with Olivia's, Maxwell let her lead the way out of the banquet hall.
She led him near the table where Penelope and Kiara sat with Hana.
Pausing once more so they could easily hear her, "Max? How would you like to stay the night with me?"
"Absolutely!" He exclaimed with a grin.
"We didn't get to finish what we started the night before." She continued once she heard Penelope's frustrated squeal. "I think we'll need all night to finally get," she lowered her voice to a purr, "completely satisfied."
Before anyone could react to that blatant hint, Maxwell gripped Olivia's hand and dragged her out of there.
"Maxwell!" She snapped as he pulled her down the street. "Slow down!"
"We have to hurry!" He told her. "That bakery we went to last night closes in twenty minutes!"
She huffed, a slight smile forming at the wrong thoughts she'd planted in everyone's minds.
"You know, we could do more than eat our weight in macarons." She reminded him.
He paused, allowing her to bump right into his arms.
"I fully intend to." He captured her lips in a long, deep kiss. "But I need energy which requires sugar to make sure you wake up completely satisfied."
Olivia's lips curved into an amused smile.
Leave it to Maxwell to find a way to turn a simple dessert into fuel for sex.
Shaking her head in amusement, she takes his hand once more as they hurry on to a nearby bakery.
After the Regatta
Penelope hobbled to her room on a sore foot and a painfully bruised ego. This wasn’t going as expected; advisors told her toward the beginning of the season she might stand a chance, but after only the first few events, they hastily changed their tone. Between Madeleine, Riley, and Olivia, they knew Penelope would not be the new king’s choice.
Regardless, Penelope was enjoying her time away. The friends she’d made were irreplaceable; she and Kiara formed an everlasting bond. Even Riley was incredibly friendly, despite her commoner status. Penelope was rooting for Riley to win it all because she was genuinely a nice person, and Penelope was looking forward to what Cordonia could look like with her as queen.
Penelope approached her door whilst humming to herself. The day was long, and she was relieved to be in the comfortable solace of her own space. She planned on calling her parents for their daily video chat, and to get some doggy face time to tide her over while away. Her anxiety was through the roof without having them close, but the friendships she’d made were a momentary distraction. She was glad the ladies were nice enough; otherwise, this experience would’ve been a nightmare.
Penelope entered and made a bee-line for the bathroom. She did her business, washed her hands, and bounced her way over to the dresser to get more comfortable for the evening. Just as she opened the drawer, a stern knock sounded on her door. Penelope scrunched her face; she was expecting no visitors but thought perhaps Kiara wanted to hang out.
As Penelope opened the structure, a thunderous force shoved through her and entered, slamming the door shut. Penelope stumbled backward but caught her footing. She could only stare at the person in front of her as panic flourished through her body. She didn't recognize them, but the death glare plastered on their face told her that notion was not applied on both ends. Her instinct told her to scream for help, but the visitor addressed her before she was given the chance.
They spoke in a low, raspy voice. “Have a seat, Lady Penelope. We have a lot to discuss.”
“W–who are you?”
“You need not worry about who I am, only what I know.”
“What do you mean?”
The person clasped their hands behind their back and stalked around Penelope; like a vulture circles its prey. “Everyone around you thinks you're the sweet, poodle-obsessed Penny, but I see otherwise. I know all about you… The things you’ve done… What your daddy tries his damndest to hide…”
Penelope’s already increasing heart rate spiked. “I don’t understand.”
“Of course you don’t. It’s alright, I wouldn’t want anyone to know, either.” They dismissively shrugged.
“Know what?”
The person snickered at her attempts to deflect, but they could see the panic rising in her eyes. “It’s quite a common expression — young and dumb. But, when you’re in the nobility, there are no secrets unless you know the right people.”
Penelope thickly swallowed. “I don’t – I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Really? So, then you’ve never been — joined in holy matrimony, right?”
Penelope’s eyes widened. “I–”
“Enough with your attempts to feign confusion; that will only prolong this process and I am not in the mood to play games. I know of your estranged marriage; how your father pays plenty of hush money per month to keep his mouth shut. I imagine it would be fairly difficult to talk yourself out of that situation if the press were to catch wind; considering Portavira continuously requests the Crown’s compensation. And I do believe the monarch would not be happy to learn your family has developed a slush fund, either.”
The intruder gave Penelope a wicked smile and added, “Not to mention the — fatality that was caught amid your poor life choices…”
Penelope visibly tensed. “That’s not – I didn’t–” she stammered before snapping her mouth closed; her flustered state prohibited her from forming an argument.
“It’s a matter of opinion, I suppose. Regardless, I attained the records from your procedure.” They waved a piece of paper in Penelope’s face, and recognition swept over her instantly. She released a shuddered breath as the document came to a stop, her tearful eyes centering on the text.
Despite Penelope’s panicked state, the aggressor continued, “Tell me, do your parents know of your aborted fetus? I mean, I saw you on security cameras entering the clinic alone. It was smart of you to use a fake name, but unfortunately, that was not enough to cover up your mistakes.”
Penelope never answered, but the assailant watched her swallow thickly with shame etched in her features. She couldn’t fathom how this stranger had found her deepest secrets that she was certain would never see the light of day.
Penelope found out she was pregnant the day after her annulment was discreetly settled. Terrified wasn’t a strong enough word to describe how she felt, as she stared down at the positive test; she went to the clinic in disguise to find out about her options and decided abortion would be the best solution. Being only nineteen years old, Penelope was practically a child herself and didn’t believe she was at a point to care for a baby like they deserved. And she was alone; when she dreamt of this moment, it happened completely differently in her head. She longed for the fairytale love, where they would start a family together; not single and inevitably disgraced.
Her parents didn’t know, she was too afraid to tell them — especially after her father agreed to pay a continuous hefty fee for Guy’s silence. Penelope was always well-behaved; the perfect trophy daughter. The look of pure disappointment held in their eyes when they found out about her marriage haunted her; she never wanted to do anything out of line again. All Penelope desired was to move on from her mistake, but life had other plans.
Panicked and ashamed, Penelope made the impossible decision alone, not wanting anyone to know of the stupid decisions that led her there. Her fear and guilt only increased after the procedure, but she grieved what could have been and pushed it into the deepest pit of her mind.
She never told a soul – nobody knew – or so she thought.
“All it would take is a small whisper to the press and it would destroy not only you, but your fraudulent parents as well…”
Penelope gasped as her tears freely flowed. “No! P–please, don’t!”
The person laughed; the sound sending an involuntary chill down Penelope’s spine. They stalked forward until her back hit the wall and they breathed over her. Penelope squeezed her eyes closed, but felt them draw nearer. The tangy scent of alcohol mixed with cigar smoke filled her nostrils, as they whispered in her ear, “If you want my silence, you’re going to have to earn it.”
Penelope’s eyes shot open as she frantically nodded her head. “Okay, j–just tell me what you need, and I’ll do it.”
“I knew you’d see reason,” the unknown presence spoke while taking a small step away. They produced an envelope from their jacket and handed it to her.
Penelope opened it and started skimming over the information; it was an email address with a set of instructions and a few other notes. She didn’t understand what it all meant; the main thing that stuck out was the location of where they wanted the photographer to be.
“Why are they going to be outside Riley’s room?”
“The less you know, the better.” They once again reached into their jacket, this time pulling out a small vial and handing it to her. “You need to give this to her beforehand. I do not care how it happens, just make sure it gets in her system; the earlier, the better.”
“W–what is this? Is this a drug?” Penelope stammered as she stared down at the bottle in her trembling hands.
The person smiled; a dark, wicked smile. “You don’t need to worry about that; just make sure she ingests it at an early enough hour.”
Tears once again streamed down Penelope’s cheeks as she frantically shook her head and tried to hand the items back. “N–no. I can’t do that, and I won’t. I would rather disgrace myself than–”
“You’re going to do it.”
Penelope stood a little taller and yelled, “No, I won’t! I–”
Penelope received a sudden, sharp backhand to her cheek. She fell to the floor cradling her face but was soon flipped over onto her back, her aggressor pinning her to the ground. She opened her mouth to scream, but quickly closed it as she saw the gleam of a blade in the light right in front of her face.
“Make a sound and I’ll kill you right here, right now.” The attacker moved the knife to hover over Penelope’s throat, applying just enough pressure to keep her subdued. “You have two options — you either comply and do as you’re told, or this is where your life will end. If you refuse to cooperate, you already know too much, and I will ensure you don’t live to tell the tale personally. But I won’t stop there, no – I’ll ruin your parents as well; the entire world will know what a fraud you and your family are.”
“No… P–please. I – I can’t – I –” Penelope frantically stammered, trying to develop a coherent sentence.
“You can, and you will. Otherwise,” they leaned forward, close enough to touch noses with Penelope. “I’ll dig your grave myself and throw those mangy mutts in with you after. Perhaps we can make it a family affair and shove your parents inside, too. After all, being exposed to the world and losing their only disappointment of a child would leave them with nothing left to live for; especially once they know of your treacherous sins.” They sat back with a vile chortle, letting the words linger.
Penelope cried harder, her breathing rapid and erratic as her panic boiled over. She opened her mouth to shout for help despite the blade at her throat, but a firm hand abruptly pressed against her lips. “I think I’m being very understanding, actually. I could just end you and move on to the next useless suitor, but I’m allowing you to make the correct choice; to answer the call of service for your country. That commoner has no business being here; you know it, I know it, everyone knows it! We have to deal with her!”
After a tense moment of silence, her intruder grew restless. They rolled their eyes and huffed, “You’re running out of time. I’ll gift you ten seconds; agree, or...” The blade on Penelope’s throat suddenly held more force; hard enough she could feel her skin being lightly pierced. “I don’t think I really need to finish that sentence, do I?”
Penelope subtly nodded her head, afraid to move too much. Although she didn’t want to betray Riley in that way, she saw no other way out. Not only was her own life being threatened, but her parents as well; she was not willing to let them die because of her secrets they knew nothing about.
Her attacker soon chortled and sat up. “I had a feeling you would see it my way.” They patted her cheek, hard, before they stood and adjusted their clothing.
The intruder walked to the door and turned back around to address a whimpering Penelope. “As a reward for your service, I will make you a lady-in-waiting for the soon-to-be queen. I’d suggest you take the position and use discretion whenever necessary from here on out. If you do anything to compromise this operation, you will be sorry. Am I clear?“
The following afternoon, Olivia met with Liam, Leo, and Ray as they discussed the events of the night prior. The court just arrived in Portavira, although there was a break in events until the polo match in a few days. They gathered in Olivia’s room, as that’s where Ray set up his equipment and continuously ensured the area remained free of compromises.
Olivia told them about Penelope’s involvement, and Liam was certain Olivia was lying or playing some kind of sick joke. However, after seeing the proof himself, he knew it had to be true. He wasn’t close with Penelope by any means, but still felt betrayed. Riley was kind and warm to those around her, not a malicious bone in her body; what made Penelope want to get rid of her?
“We have to question her. I can’t be sure, but she might know we’re onto her. The look in her eyes –” Olivia shook her head with a heavy sigh. ”– I can’t explain it, but I don’t like it.”
“I agree,” Leo interjected. “We need to know why she did it, man, because this makes absolutely no sense. I mean, Penelope – of all people? Did she accidentally eat some dog food or something, and it made her go kookoo?”
Despite his overflowing anxiety, Liam laughed. “I really don't know. But we’re not all going to question her. I think it’s best if myself and Leo did this, so we don’t overwhelm her.” He spoke to the entire group.
“Are you… okay to do that?” Leo tentatively asked. “I can take Olivia — or hell, even Maxwell or Drake, if you don’t think you can keep your cool. We can’t really risk her shutting down and withholding anything important...”
Liam remained silent for a long moment. Honestly, he didn’t know if he could control himself. The selfish side of him wanted to confront Penelope face-to-face and demand answers. However, he knew he was teetering on a dangerous ledge, and her confession could provoke several different reactions.
He didn’t remember the last time he’d slept or ate a full meal. Days were molding together, and he had no sense of time unless it pertained to the tour. Liam was simply muttering through, doing the dutiful checklist a monarch should on the daily and trying his hardest to stay afloat; even though in all reality, he felt like he was drowning in a sea of uncertainty. No amount of training could prepare him for something like this; he was simply in limbo until one of the many open ends finally led them to something of importance. As the King he held mighty authority; yet, he’d never felt so powerless. Every second of not knowing something was torture; he just wanted to see Riley with his own two eyes.
“I… don’t think I can, actually. If you wouldn’t mind questioning her, I would very much appreciate it, Leo.”
Leo patted Liam on the back with a reassuring smile. “No problem. Care to accompany me, Livvie?”
“I suppose if we want some kind of answer, I’ll have to, won’t I?” Olivia smirked.
“Are we doing this now, or?”
“Yes. The sooner, the better.”
“And we’re certain she’s here?” Liam asked.
“She was out earlier with her dogs,” Olivia answered with an eye roll.
Liam nodded as he rubbed his palms together. “This is a decent plan. I have a good feeling about this, guys.”
For the first time since he opened his eyes to the truth about the narrative against Riley, Liam felt like this could take them somewhere relevant. This was a solid lead and although he knew it probably wouldn’t provide him with all the answers he was seeking, it was a damn good start.
Liam spoke again, “Any other updates?”
“I received the diagnostic report on Lady Riley’s dress on the way here." Ray explained. "The blood was mostly Riley’s, but traces from Tariq were present as well. There were a few hairs and skin cells noted, but the DNA only registers those two.”
“Oh… okay…” Liam quietly responded. He hoped deep down the mess was from someone else, but immediately felt foolish to let himself believe such a thing. Hearing it confirmed out loud made his stomach burn with anxiety; this is what he blinded himself to, this is what he ignored. The overwhelming guilt Liam was fighting momentarily took his breath away.
“Otherwise, there are no new leads.” Ray briefly met eyes with Olivia, the both of them having a silent conversation; unbeknownst to Liam. It wasn’t technically a lie, but not the entire truth. Ray found something — interesting, but Olivia decided now was not the time to bring it up to Liam, at least until after they learned what exactly Penelope knew. “Where Tariq is concerned, I’ve hit a complete brick wall; there’s absolutely nothing.”
“Nothing?”
Ray shook his head. “Not a trace. His accounts show no transactions, and his family has not heard from him in months. I’ve checked every mode of transportation available to leave the country and he wasn’t on any of their databases.”
“How is that even possible? There has to be something, somewhere. Seriously – Tariq has the IQ of a fucking peanut.” Leo interjected.
“It could be a collection of reasons,” Ray answered. He suddenly stopped typing on his keyboard and took in everyone’s curious expressions. “Either he’s just incredibly clever and has an immaculate ability to cover his tracks, has hired someone to do that for him, or…”
“He’s dead…” Liam quietly inserted, just above a whisper. His palms started trembling in his lap, and the only thing he could feel was his heart erratically thumping.
The deeper this web went, the further Liam felt himself slipping from reality. All he wanted was a sign, a concrete clue, anything to put him one step closer to finding Riley. The longer that time passed, the more he believed there was a grim reason they couldn’t find them. Just when the light at the end shined brighter, Liam was suddenly drug further down into the abyss of questions, making him doubt everything.
“We can’t confirm that right now, Your Majesty. I’ve searched hospital records and there are no reports of him checking in at any of them and nothing solid to point to that conclusion. There are a lot of open ends regarding his whereabouts, but I have a couple more places to look before we should start truly discussing that possibility.”
“Right…” Liam quietly responded as his mind raced. If Tariq’s DNA was on her dress, does that mean he’s the one who injured her? They already knew he was close to Riley; the pictures obviously showcased them together, but was Tariq responsible for attacking her, too? Those thoughts created a storm of rage he’d never felt before; just when he thought the fire had sizzled out, another splash of gasoline was poured onto the diminishing coals. Liam may not have felt a lot of hope, but he sure as hell felt the rage consuming his entire being.
Leo noticed Liam's forelorn expression and reassuringly gripped his shoulder. “Don’t worry, man. We’re going to get an answer — soon.”
A short while later, Olivia, Leo, and ‘Harold’ walked the halls of the Portavirian estate, searching for Penelope’s room. Liam opted to have a drink with Drake instead of being alone, as his already overflowing anxiety seemed to increase with every passing second.
They rounded the corner and Olivia tapped on Penelope’s door, but received near silence; muffled barks rang out beyond the structure, although seemingly at a distance. After a few moments, she stepped forward and repeated the process, but again, no answer. Leo knocked a few times a little louder, but heard nothing — aside from the dogs. He reached for the handle and tried to turn it, just to see, only to find it locked.
“What should we do?” Leo asked Olivia.
Olivia tapped her index finger against her chin. “I don’t know…” She furrowed her brow and stared at the door in front of her. “The poodles are inside, so she shouldn’t be far… Maybe we search around and see if we spot her anywhere? It’s still relatively early; she could have stepped out for a moment.”
Leo and Ray both agreed, and the trio began their trek. They started outside by the pool and checked the lounge area, but Penelope wasn't located anywhere. They searched nearly every floor, even the roof, but found no signs of her. Everyone else was already in their room for the night, the estate nearly deserted as they scoured the abandoned hallways. After a while, everyone agreed to take their chances and return to Penelope’s door, as a good hour passed since they last attempted.
A voice called out to them as they made their way up the grand staircase. They turned around to see Landon making his way to them with a grin on his face. “Good evening, Your Majesty, Duchess, a pleasure to see you both. Are the two of you just strolling, or have you been out on the town?” He chuckled with a playful side eye directed at Leo.
“You know me,” Leo smirked, “but actually, we’ve been looking for your daughter.”
Landon’s smile faded, instead replaced with a perplexed expression. “What do you need from Penelope?”
Leo and Olivia shared a hesitant look. “Actually, it’s confidential… Do you know where she is?”
“She said she was retiring to her room earlier.”
Olivia spoke next. “We checked there. We checked everywhere and we have no clue where she’s at.”
“Perhaps she’s already in slumber; she is quite the heavy sleeper. How about I come with you? I was headed there anyway, as she was acting fairly strange earlier.”
“Strange how?” Leo asked.
“She kept hugging her mother and me, and told us how much she loved us. She just seemed — sad, as if she would burst into tears at any moment. And she asked me to ensure Merlin and Morgana get plenty of treats.” Landon furrowed his brows and shook his head. “I asked her what she meant, and she just gave me another hug. Emmaline thinks she’s getting ready for her time of the month, which is why I came prepared.” He held up a wad of chocolate bars and laughed.
“I take it Merlin and Morgana are the poodles?”
“Oh, yes. They’re practically her children. It’s been hard on her to leave them at home, but she’s done fairly well. The unexpected route changes actually ended up being very beneficial to her, since she gets to be with them for a few days. I’m certain she’s going to have a hard time leaving again, but I know she appreciates getting to see them. When it was time to leave for the engagement tour, she was practically inconsolable; she didn’t want to leave, to the point we weren’t sure she would attend at all.”
“So, she didn’t want to return, then?” Olivia inquired, hanging on his every word.
Landon sighed and looked away. “I don’t believe so, no. But we made sure she knew how much of a tremendous opportunity this was for her. She was incredibly reluctant, but finally agreed. In all honesty, I think most of her reservations were regarding the fact that she was going so far away. Penelope is a very timid girl; she doesn’t particularly enjoy the crowds or being away from home. I’m confident staying in Cordonia where things are a little more familiar will turn things around for her; perhaps she will enjoy herself a bit.”
“Right…” Olivia trailed off, as her mind swirled around these new little bits of information. She questioned if Penelope's reluctance to come back had to do with Riley's disappearance. The haunting look in Penelope’s eyes as that cab drove away told Olivia she could be correct.
“Lead the way, then,” Leo inserted with a forced smile, as uneasiness crept into the pit of his stomach. The hair on the back of his neck suddenly stood at attention, an involuntary shudder traveling through his body; he shook it off and politely smiled at Landon, who returned the gesture before starting the journey.
Everyone strolled through the halls together and within a short time, they were nearing Penelope’s room once again. Leo and Landon made small talk along the way, but Olivia didn’t listen most of the time. A bad feeling rapidly grew as they walked; why, she wasn’t sure, but it was becoming impossible to ignore. As they got closer, the air suddenly felt cold, raising goosebumps on her skin and sending a shiver down her spine. The hallway had an eerie aura to it that was beyond explanation; judging from the cautious expressions of everyone around, Olivia knew her feelings were not in her head. Landon appeared to be the only one who didn’t notice the atmosphere shift, although he hadn’t stopped talking long enough to take in the environment.
Just as they were about to arrive, they heard muffled voices speaking not far away. Olivia furrowed her brows and started walking faster, practically running, with Ray and Leo not far behind.
She came to an abrupt stop as she saw a litter of guards standing outside of Penelope’s room; dressed in full riot gear with what she assumed to be loaded assault rifles, all appearing to be awaiting instructions. Standing toward the back of the mass of people was Liam, who was speaking with Bastien in hushed tones. She could tell even from afar he was talking sternly; his angry demeanor instantly drew Olivia to him. Drake lingered close-by, wearing an expression of pure confusion.
Olivia approached them and inquired, “What’s going on?”
“There you are. I’ve been looking all over for you,” Liam replied. “Did you question Penelope?”
“We were looking for her, that’s why we’re here, now.”
“But you didn’t find her?” Liam snapped, not even trying to hide the annoyance in his tone.
“Not yet…” Leo answered as he took in Liam’s tense shoulders and ticking jaw. “Liam, what is going on?”
Before Liam could respond, Landon interjected himself. “What is the meaning of this?!”
Liam took a deep breath to calm himself and spoke in a calm, yet authoritative voice. “Duke Landon, I understand this may be hard for you to hear, but we have to take Penelope into custody.”
“Custody?! On what grounds?!” Landon hollered.
Liam swallowed down the ball of anger and agitation lodged in his throat and spoke in a flat voice. “She is the prime suspect in the murder of Rhonda Floros.” Everyone’s eyes widened as their jaws hit the floor. “We will investigate further, but she has to be detained until we can–”
“I – what?! You have no proof! This – this is an injustice!” Landon yelled as he frantically paced in front of Penelope’s door.
Leo hesitantly spoke in a hushed manner. “Li, all we knew about was the photographer. How can you jump to that conclusion?”
“The forensics came back and Penelope’s prints were all over the murder weapon. Her DNA was on everything else as well, but I’m focused on that knife.”
“Impossible! There has to be some kind of mistake!” Landon pleaded.
“I’m sorry Landon, but the forensics does not lie,” Liam replied with a sad smile. “Trust me, I don’t want to believe she could have done something like this and I intend to figure it out, but we have to locate her first!"
Landon quickly stepped toward Penelope’s room and pulled a set of keys from his pocket. “She is in here — I know she is; she’s sleeping. I’ll wake her up and we can figure out this mess together, because I know for certain she is innocent.” He spoke as he unlocked the door and turned the handle. He entered and flipped the switch on the wall, the area becoming illuminated.
Liam motioned for the guards to stay outside and followed closely behind. Olivia entered next, followed by Ray. However, a stern hand on Ray’s chest halted him in the doorway.
“You are unauthorized personnel,” Bastien snapped.
Liam quickly intervened. “No, he’s not.”
“Your Majesty, with all due respect, I entered his credentials myself. I know for a fact what clearances he has and doesn’t.”
Liam stepped up to Bastien with narrowed eyes. “Poof.” He snapped his fingers. “I just gave him access. Now, step aside.” He growled through clenched teeth, the vein in his neck profusely popping out.
To be honest, Liam was stalling until he found Ray and Olivia; the three of them were going to question Penelope together. His earlier worries about keeping his cool were well out the window; now he was simply confused. Why did she hire the photographer? Did she really kill that maid? Did Penelope know they had spoken to her? Every piece of random evidence found had Penelope’s DNA – and only hers – on it in some fashion. Although the legitimacy of the scene was still in question, her fingerprints on the murder weapon were more than enough to detain her for questioning.
Bastien never once took his eyes off Ray during the entire interaction. Ray observed Bastien's face crack slightly and saw him swallow and clench his jaw when Liam commanded him to stop. He finally moved his hand to allow Ray entrance, but held his intent gaze for just a moment too long. Olivia watched and noted how she wasn’t stopped, nor Drake or Leo — only Ray. She couldn’t help but wonder why Bastien didn’t want him specifically there.
Liam glanced around as he entered and saw no signs of Penelope and nothing raising any kind of alarm. He’d never been inside this room before, but to the naked eye, not a thing was out of place. However, Liam couldn’t deny the sudden chill he felt as he stepped over the threshold. His skin instantly clammed up, and his heart rate increased substantially with every tense second that passed.
Everyone else followed behind and did the same, but Landon circled the room while frantically calling Penelope’s name, only to get no response. He ducked into the bathroom to check there, but saw no traces of his daughter. Everything appeared just as it was earlier that morning when he personally prepared everything for Penelope’s arrival.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Landon huffed as he reemerged. “She said she was coming to bed. Where else would she go? Should we contact Lady Kiara? They had grown quite close.”
Liam sighed and ran a hand down his face. “Bastien, send someone to Lady Kiara’s room to check.” His patience with this situation was dissipating. An answer was right there dangling in front of his face; he could practically taste it. Even if he had to turn the entire continent upside down, Liam was going to find Penelope and make her answer for her part in this mess — whatever that could have been.
“Yes, sir.”
Olivia glanced at the dresser and saw a jewelry box. Something on top of it quickly caught her attention; it was a piece of paper neatly folded with the words read me written on it in red ink. Her breaths immediately stopped as she stared at it for a long moment. Goosebumps raised on her skin as she realized the penmanship was strikingly familiar.
She slowly reached out and brought it closer; Ray noticed and came to stand beside her to see what she had found. Liam and Landon continued to speak on the other side of the room, completely unaware of their discovery. Olivia carefully unfolded the sheet and quickly scanned over the contents. As she started reading, the color suddenly drained from her face, her hands trembling, and even tears were forming in the corners of her eyes. Her mind instantly started spiraling, trying to decipher what this meant.
Olivia and Ray stood gawking at the paper in a trance for an unidentified amount of time. The sound of Landon’s thunderous voice suddenly brought both out of their dazes. “This is absurd! She did nothing wrong!”
“I understand your frustrations but as I said before, the forensics does not lie,” Liam answered in the calmest tone he could muster. “I have questions about all of this, Landon! But one way or another her DNA was littered–”
“Bullshit! Run the tests again! Something is going on here!”
Liam winced at Landon’s volume, but shook it off and stood to his full height. “Duke Ebrim, you’d do well to remember who you’re speaking to and watch your tone. While I understand why you’re upset, I’m only here to figure this out. If you want to clear her name, help us find her so we can speak to her!”
Landon frantically looked throughout the room, desperately trying to make sense of what was happening. At that moment, they heard a bark, followed by another softer cry; everyone suddenly stilled and an eerie silence took over, as they glanced at one another with furrowed brows. It sounded undeniably close, but there were obviously no dogs in the area. The silence in the air was deafening, but then it happened again and Landon finally pinpointed the location — the closet. It would make sense; Penelope heard the commotion and retreated in there with her poodles to hide because she was afraid.
Landon made a bee-line for the door and wildly swung it open. He took a step back and two fluffy dogs slowly came out with their heads down, causing Landon to take a few steps back; they laid at Landon’s feet and whimpered.
“What is it, Merlie?” Landon asked as he rubbed one of the dogs’ heads, their howls intensifying.
The room’s air suddenly felt incredibly thick at the interaction. Liam felt physically sick to his stomach as recognition swept over him from head to toe — something was waiting for them in that closet. His hands shook at his sides, his breathing shaky and uneven as he stared into the dark, open doorway.
Landon stepped over the poodles, who went and lay on the bed, but continued whining. As he entered, he ran a hand along the wall until he found the switch. The small area came to light, and his worst nightmare suddenly became reality right in front of his face.
“NO!” Landon wailed at an ear-piercing volume as he dropped to his knees near the doorway.
“What’s wrong?” Liam sought, but Landon broke into a fit of sobs and crumpled to the floor.
Liam swallowed thickly and took a couple of cautious steps forward. Olivia suddenly appeared and tried to redirect him, but Liam was steadfast; whatever it was, he needed to see it for himself. As he got closer, he could see a chair lying on its side. His eyesight started on the floor and slowly traveled upward. He hadn’t made it very far before the color drained from his face with sweat immediately beading his brow at seeing a pair of dainty feet dangling in the air; one heel on, the other nowhere to be seen.
Liam looked away but with a shuddered breath followed the body back up to the face, and sure enough, it was Penelope.
Landon suddenly shoved Liam out of the way. “MOVE!” He rushed over and held Penelope’s lifeless form, lifting her easily with one hand; the other quickly moving to remove the belt from around her severely bruised neck. Her limp body dropped into his arms and he cradled her to his chest as he rocked back and forth, making cries that would haunt Liam until the day he died.
Liam regained his footing but remained cemented in place. This was it; this was their big break, but they only received more unanswered questions. Hopelessness flourished, as he saw no other solutions in sight. He felt like a mouse, mindlessly running through a maze just trying to reach the end for the reward. Penelope's testimony was that reward, but instead of finding the end of the maze, he encountered a sudden, abrupt wall.
Regardless of their actions, they faced a grim reality where a devastating setback countered every advance they made; one step forward, only to be met with two deadly steps back.
Liam suddenly couldn’t breathe; his lungs felt like fire with every rapid, hollow breath. The room started spinning, his vision hazing at a rapid rate. His heart pounded mercilessly, the sound overpowering Landon’s continuous wails filling the room. His hands flew to his chest and he stumbled backward, Leo and Drake quickly moving to catch him before he hit the floor.
They lowered him to the ground and sat over him as Liam’s vision slowly faded out, their faces disintegrating into a pixelated, blurry image. He blinked his eyes a few times to regain himself, but found the rapidly spinning room made him nauseous. He felt Leo lightly tapping his cheeks, but when he tried to open his mouth, only an anguished cry escaped.
Liam stared at the ceiling until the bright lights suddenly dimmed. His eyelids grew incredibly heavy until he succumbed to the weight of the world forcing them down. Darkness consumed him as he slipped into unconsciousness, a still silence overcoming his being.
"Goddamn it," Leo grumbled to himself, as he watched Liam’s body relax. "Get a fucking ambulance! Now!" He hollered over his shoulder before his teary vision centered on his brother again. "Cummon, Li..."
The Royal Cordonian Polo Club, Game Day
The sun was shining brightly over the expansive polo field, casting a golden glow over the lush green grass and fluttering banners that adorned the venue. It was the day of the highly anticipated charity polo match to raise funds for flooding relief due to the earthquake that struck the coastal duchy of Portavira.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as spectators arrived at the venue. Royalty, nobility, and the common folk were all greeted by the sight of elegant tents and marquees set up around the field. Grandstand bleachers were erected around the perimeter of the playing field to the south, while across the field in the VIP area, distinguished guests and sponsors were treated to a luxurious experience. The VIP tent was elegantly decorated with floral arrangements and comfortable seating, offering a panoramic view of the polo field. Waitstaff moved gracefully among the tables, offering champagne and hors d'oeuvres to the noble classes enjoying the pre-match festivities.
Members of Liam’s team, Sophie, Drake, Melanie and Maxwell were assembled at center field waiting anxiously, but enthusiastically, to start the match. The opposing team members, Rashad, Penelope, Neville, Kiara and Tariq stood opposite, discussing strategy in hushed voices. As each player stood beside their steeds, Marabelle snorted impatiently, muscles tense with anticipation as she felt the energy pulsing through the crowd. Sophie stroked Marabelle’s mane as her hooves pawed the ground, eager to explode into action.
Standing beside Maxwell, Liam listened intently to Drake’s scheme to outwit the other team but was periodically distracted by Sophie’s voice as she spoke soothingly to her horse. He looked over and admired the smooth contour and silky skin of her neck as her long hair was pulled up and hidden underneath her safety helmet. As Maxwell asked Drake a question, Liam stepped closer to Sophie and murmured into her ear, trying not to be overheard. "I have a confession to make.”
"What's that?" Sophie giggled as his breath tickled her neck.
"I'm totally checking you out right now." Liam shamelessly flirted, watching her reaction with delight, and enjoying the moment.
"Oh, am I distracting you, Your Highness?" Sophie cheekily whispered, grinning wide.
"Extremely," he admitted, their banter adding an extra layer of excitement between them.
"Then we're even," she smirked, batting her eyes.
"Even for what?" Liam chuckled not knowing where Sophie was going with that comment.
"For the flowers and the note." Liam paused, recalling the gift he had sent over to the Beaumont estate on Valentine’s Day.
"Ah, yes, the flowers and the note," he said, biting his lip, trying but failing not to smile.
"That was very sweet of you." Sophie replied glancing up, watching his reaction through her eyelashes, smiling demurely.
"Well, I try." Liam winked, turning his attention to acknowledge the referee walking towards him.
Melanie could not help but notice their intimate, and soft conversation as she needlessly adjusted her mare’s saddle, moving in close by to stand beside Drake.
“Congrats. You’re one of us now.” Drake’s voice interrupted her thoughts with his congratulatory remark to Sophie as she spun around to his voice, her annoyance clear.
“What?” Melanie snapped; her tone sharp as she pivoted to him.
"Whoa ... whoa, Smithson! Calm down..." Drake responded, raising his hands in a placating gesture, seeing Melanie's irritation. The tension between them was now palpable, adding an uncomfortable twist to the atmosphere between them.
Melanie's frustration simmered just below the surface as she glared at Drake, her eyes narrowing. She had always felt like an outsider amongst this group, and seeing Sophie being welcomed so warmly and repeatedly by everyone only intensified her feelings of exclusion and jealousy.
Drake, sensing her ire, took a step back. "I didn't mean to upset you, Melanie," he said, his tone more cautious now, trying to diffuse the situation. "We're just happy to have Sophie join us."
Melanie huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Sure, whatever," she muttered, turning her attention back to adjusting her mare's saddle. But deep down, she couldn't shake off the hurt of feeling left out once again.
Drake's face fell. He'd meant what he'd said, but it seemed like no matter what he did, it was always the wrong thing where Melanie was concerned.
He opened his mouth to apologize, but then stopped himself, realizing that anything else he said would only make things worse.
With a heavy sigh, he turned and walked away, leaving Melanie to stew in her own irritation.
Meanwhile, Sophie, oblivious to their underlying tension, beamed with excitement at being accepted by the group. She couldn't wait to join them in their adventures and create lasting memories together. Little did she know the dynamics within the group were about to shift in unexpected ways very soon.
The referee approached Liam, bowing respectfully before him, presenting the game ball with a solemn air. Liam inspected it carefully, making sure it was in good condition. After confirmation, Liam signaled all the players to mount.
"Good luck out there, everyone," the referee said, and then he stepped back, signaling the start of the match.
Liam led his teammates as they kicked their horses into action, eager to get the game underway.
Sophie, riding Marabelle moved alongside Liam. Her heart was racing, and she could not believe she was about to play in front of such a large crowd which included the king and queen.
She looked over at Liam and nervously smiled. "There are so many people here," she called out.
"Yeah, this is the biggest turnout we've had in a while," he responded. "Are you ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be," she answered, feeling the butterflies return to her stomach.
"Just focus on the game and having fun. That's what it's all about," Liam smiled.
"Right," she said, taking a deep breath.
"We've got this," he assured her.
As all the players took to the field, the crowd cheered and waved flags bearing the colors of their choice team.
Liam rode his horse first onto the field. His teammates followed behind him, each looking confident and determined.
"And here they are, ladies and gentlemen, the Cordonian Royal Polo team and the Domvallien Polo Club team!" The announcer’s voice boomed over the sound system.
The applause was thunderous as Liam smiled and waved at the cheering crowd.
Lord Rashad, the heir to the Duchy of Domvallier led his team onto the field as he also waved to the crowd.
"Let's give them a big hand," the announcer continued. "They're going to be giving their all today, in support of the relief efforts for the victims of the recent floods in Portavira."
Sophie smiled and nodded, trying to calm her nerves, as she noticed her Aunt Bethany and Daniel waving to her from the stands as she rode by.
The starting pistol sounded and the game was underway. Liam and Drake took turns driving the ball toward the opposing team's goal. Sophie watched their fluid movements with admiration, trying to predict their next moves alongside Maxwell. Across the field, Neville and Rashad were also closely following the play as Kiara and Melanie followed closely behind Penelope and Tariq.
Liam passed the ball to Sophie, who received it confidently, her body moving in sync with Marabelle.
She deftly guided the ball toward the opposing team's goal, her mallet striking the ball with precision.
The crowd cheered as the ball sailed through the air and landed in the net.
"And the first point goes to the Cordonian Royal Polo Team!" the announcer shouted.
"That was incredible," Liam shouted, smiling with admiration.
Sophie smiled back, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Let's keep it up," he said, giving her a wink.
Sophie's heart fluttered, and she nodded, her determination renewed.
As the game progressed, Neville seized an opportunity for the opposing team and scored a goal, eliciting cheers from his teammates and spectators. Passing by Sophie, he could not resist shooting her a snide glare, his expression smug and condescending.
 Sophie, unfazed by Neville's behavior, remained focused on the match and ignored his intimidation tactics. She knew that in polo, actions spoke louder than words, and she was determined to contribute to her team's success.
 Liam, watching the interaction, felt a surge of protective instinct towards Sophie. He made a mental note to keep an eye on Neville's antics to ensure that Sophie was not affected by his arrogance.
Sophie and Liam's performance throughout the game was electric and their team was flawless as they dominated the field.
Sophie felt a sense of pride as the crowd cheered. She could not believe she was actually doing this. It was exhilarating.
VIP Tent
"Duke Barthelemy, so glad you could make it," Constantine welcomed, offering his hand.
"Constantine, good to see you," Barthelemy acknowledged, shaking his hand. Dressed in a tailored suit, his salt-and-pepper hair neatly groomed, he took a seat at the table next to the King.
“Your Majesty.” Bertrand bowed. "This is quite a turnout," Bertrand commented, surveying the crowd.
"Indeed, it is," Constantine agreed. "I see Maxwell and Sophia have joined my son's team for the match."
"I must admit, I'm a bit surprised to see my youngest son playing on the same team as the prince," Barthelemy said, a hint of disapproval in his voice.
"Nonsense, Barthelemy," Constantine replied. "Maxwell is a fine player, and a valuable addition to the team.”
"And it's always paramount to support the Crown," Bertrand added.
"Yes, well, I suppose," Barthelemy said, his lips pursed.
"Oh, come now, Barthelemy," Constantine chided, laughing heartily. "There's no need to be so apprehensive. This is a charity match, after all. Lighten up and enjoy yourself."
Barthelemy gave a tight smile. "Of course. You are right, your majesty.”
"Good," Constantine said, clapping him on the shoulder. "Now, let's watch these youngsters put on a show."
“However, Constantine, I am surprised your other son is absent from today’s activities."
"He's a grown man, Barthelemy. He has his own life."
"Still, this is a very important day for the monarchy, and he should be here, supporting the Crown and country. He is the Crown Prince."
"Leo has a lot on his mind, and he needs time to sort through it." Constantine replied stoically, purposefully not revealing any information to his old friend.
Barthelemy noticed the look of irritation on the King's face. "I see. Forgive me for being forward, Your Majesty, but I feel the need to remind you that this is a pivotal moment for Cordonia. And as the Crown Prince, Leo has a responsibility to the people of our country along with his betrothed."
"I'm well aware of my son's duties," Constantine replied, his voice low and terse.
"Come now, Constantine. There is no need to be distressed." Regina patted his arm trying to defuse her husband's aggravation.
The game was nearing half-time as Barthelemy watched his niece with admiration. His thoughts were singular... Her dedication, talent, and composure on the field spoke volumes about her character and capabilities.
As he watched Sophie and Liam's undeniable chemistry and teamwork, Barthelemy's thoughts turned to her future. He knew that Sophie had all the qualities of a great leader and ruler. Her compassion, intelligence, and ability to inspire others were qualities that would make her a remarkable queen one day.
King Constantine glanced at Barthelemy, noticing the proud smile on his face. "She's quite impressive, isn't she?" the king remarked, acknowledging Sophie's talent.
Barthelemy nodded, his gaze never leaving Sophie. "Indeed, Your Majesty. She has exceeded all expectations today. It's moments like these that reaffirm my belief in her potential."
 'She will make a remarkable queen', Barthelemy mused, having heard abdication rumors amongst the nobility; his speculation peaked.
The match continued with intense excitement, each team giving their best effort. Sophie and Liam's team kept their lead, highlighting their dominance on the polo field. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation as the last moments of the first half approached.
At half-time, the players dismounted and enjoyed refreshments in the players tent. Speaking with Liam, Rashad asked what he thought of Leo’s phone call to his father, the king.
Liam sighed, "Leo is probably just frustrated and needed time to think, away from the palace."
Rashad looked concerned. "But the timing couldn't be worse. With your father's health declining, and Leo refusing to take the throne..."
"Rashad, I've known Leo my entire life. He's stubborn, but he always comes around."
"I hope you're right," Rashad sighed.
“My apologies, your highness,” a royal courtier addressed Liam, interrupting the conversation, handing Liam an envelope.
After ending his conversation with Rashad, Liam read the note from his father announcing that he was to meet with his father at the Royal tent at the end of the match.
As the game progressed, it was clear that the Cordonian Royal Polo Team had a strong advantage to win.. They scored several goals, much to the delight of the crowd.
Sophie felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins with each successful play. The cheers and applause from the crowd fueled her determination, and she rode Marabelle with unwavering focus and skill.
Sophie's skills were improving with every play, and she quickly became an asset to the team.
However, as the game continued, she could not help but notice that Liam seemed distracted, his usual focus and intensity absent.
As the final whistle blew, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Sophie couldn't hold her joy and excitement, exchanging high-fives with her teammates and sharing a triumphant smile with Liam.
The Cordonian Royal Polo Team had won the game and the match raised a significant amount of money for relief efforts in Portavira.
Liam approached the players'tent, a broad grin on his face. "Congratulations, everyone," he said, his voice filled with pride. "That was an amazing game. I couldn't have asked for a better team."
Sophie blushed, the thrill of victory still coursing through her veins.
"We couldn't have done it without you, Liam," Drake replied.
"We couldn't have done it without our secret weapon," Liam corrected, his gaze resting on Sophie.
"Thanks, guys," Sophie replied, touched by their support.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Drake asked. "Let's go celebrate!"
"Not just yet," Liam said, his expression growing serious.
"What is it, Liam?"
"My father has requested to see me. I will meet up with you guys later at the beer garden."
"Sure, whatever you need, man," Drake replied, patting Liam on the back.
Liam kissed Sophie's cheek. “I shouldn’t be long, love.”
“All right, see you later.” Sophie grasped Marabelle's reins and started walking towards the stables.
Liam left his team, walking across the grounds toward the VIP tent. He spotted his father standing outside, surrounded by a small group of nobles and officials.
Constantine noticed Liam approaching and waved him over. "My son," he boomed.
"Hello, Father," Liam said, his expression solemn.
"That was quite a performance out there today."
"Yes, thank you. The team performed admirably. "
"Indeed. And Lady Sophia," Constantine added."Quite the addition to the team."
Liam's face lit up. "She's incredible, isn't she?"
"I can see that you are quite taken with her. She is a charming young lady."
"Father, I don't just think she's charming, I --"
*I know," Constantine interrupted. "But we can discuss that later. For now, I need to speak with you about an urgent matter."
Liam nodded in understanding, "what is it, Father?"
"Your brother," Constantine replied, his voice grim.
"Leo? What about him?"
"He has refused the crown."
"He has what?" Liam's jaw dropped.
"Calm yourself, Liam. You are in the presence of others," his father reminded him.
"Father, I..."
"Later," Constantine cut him off.
Liam was shocked and angry. He couldn't believe his brother would abandon his responsibilities like this.
"Liam, it's time we had a discussion about the future of our kingdom," Constantine said, his voice low.
"Of course, Father," Liam replied, his thoughts racing.
"Walk with me," Constantine instructed.
The two men walked in silence, the crowd of nobles and officials following them at a respectful distance.
"Liam, you must prepare yourself. The crown will soon pass to you, and with it, the heavy responsibility of leading our country," Constantine began.
Club Stables
Neville had been watching Sophie with growing annoyance. He couldn't understand why Liam and the others were so taken with her. She was just a commoner, a nobody, and yet they treated her like she was special. She was fortunate to be a relation to House Beaumont, however, she was an American. Not nobility. Another commoner for Liam to grant station to.
After Sophie dismounted from Marabelle and secured her into a stall, Neville approached, a smug smile on his face.
"Good job, Lady Sophia," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Sophie looked over and ignored his comment, trying to get her bearings.
"Hey, I'm talking to you," he snapped, stepping in front of her.
"Leave me alone, Neville," she retorted, trying to push past him.
Neville grabbed her arm, his fingers digging into her skin.
"Get your hands off me," she hissed, struggling to free herself.
He pushed her and Sophie stumbled backwards, losing her balance. She tried to regain her footing, but her foot caught on the edge of the gate, and she tumbled to the ground, landing hard on her side, her head smacking the ground.
She winced in pain, clutching her arm.
"You should be more careful," Neville sneered, stepping over her.
"You bastard," she muttered, tears stinging her eyes.
Neville laughed, his expression mocking. "That's what you get for thinking you're better than you are."
As he walked away, Sophie lay on the ground, tears streaming down her face.
She was hurt, and angry, and she didn't know how she was going to get up to get help, feeling dizzy. She laid back down holding her arm close, listening to Marabelle whinny as she reared in her stall.
But one thing was for certain: she was not going to let Neville get away with hurting her like this.
"Squirrel? Are you okay?" Daniel exclaimed, rushing to her.
"No, I'm not," she replied, her voice choked with emotion.
"What happened?"
"Neville happened," she said, anger replacing her pain.
"What? Why would he do that?"
"Because he's a jerk," Sophie replied, her voice breaking as she covered her face with her hands.
Daniel helped her to sit up, his face etched with concern. He reached for his phone and tapped Maxwells number.
"Do you want to tell Liam?"
"No, I don't want to make a scene. It's just a few bruises."
"Okay, if you're sure," Daniel said, his voice uncertain.
...I swear that I'll be yours forever, till forever falls apart...
The loud clack-clack of a pair of nine hundred dollar Louis Vuitton red bottom heels echoed through The Crown Room, the formal dining area of the Ocean Side Polo Club.
Heads swung up to watch the sensuous sway of the woman’s hips as she followed the maître d’. Head up, chin out, Riley ignored the men’s salacious looks and the women’s glances and whispers.
Kiara leaned across the table to hiss at her luncheon companions, “What is she doing here? I thought the Beaumonts declined the invitation to watch this year’s charity match.”
“They did!” Penelope replied. “Bertrand is out of the country on business and Max said he had a personal matter to attend to.”
“So what?” Olivia chimed in. “A woman can’t attend an event without her husband?”
“She can,” Kiara shook her head, “But she rarely does.”
“Because they know they have to guard her!” Penelope let an uncharacteristic amount of venom lace her words. “She seduces men everywhere she goes!”
Oliva laughed as she pushed the rice pilaf around her plate. “You’re just mad she snatched Max right out from under you.”
Penelope stiffened, and then an insincere smile crossed her face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Zeke and I are very happy together.”
“Sure… now.” Olivia rolled her eyes.
“She certainly doesn’t understand boundaries,” Kiara interjected. “Drake and I had two perfectly good dates. I was expecting a call to schedule the third and the next thing I knew, he was eloping with that Jezebel to Bora Bora!”
Oliva smirked. “Well, Drake has been back on the market for a while, and from the looks of it, Maxwell is about to be as well.”
“What?” Penelope jerked her head back around to see what was going on.
Riley had just been joined by Rashad Faheem.
“So?” Penelope wasn’t following. “He’s her first ex-husband, right?”
“Yes,” Olivia affirmed. “And also, her lawyer.”
Penelope’s eyes widened. “She could just be catching up with an ex.”
“Non!” Kiara bounced in her seat excitedly. “He handled her divorce from Drake.”
“Oh! Penelope’s hands flew up to cover her mouth. Not that she cared if Max was single. “How many husbands has she divorced now? Four? Five?”
Kiara lowered her voice conspiratorially. “I heard she was secretly married to the king’s older brother!”
Olivia’s eyes cut sharply to Kiara. “If she was, it was an ill-advised mistake that was quickly corrected!”
“Oh!” Kiara grinned at the redhead. “You know something. Spill!”
“Like I would tell you if I did.” Olivia glanced back across the room to see Riley flipping through a sheaf of papers. Rashad leaned in close to her as he pointed out things on the pages. He leaned even closer and whispered something into her ear.
Riley touched his arm as her laugh rang out across the room.
“Oh yeah.” Olivia shook her head, “She’s about to be single again. Better hold onto to Zeke.”
“What?” Penelope’s eyes went wide with panic.
Kiara patted her arm. “Olivia is just teasing you. Zeke loves you.”
“Sure he does,” Olivia said dismissively as she rose. She could care less who Riley set her sights on next. She was secure in her relationship. “Let me impart a little wisdom to you harpies. If another woman can take your man from you, he was never yours.”
Olivia walked away before either of the other women could respond. She gave a polite nod to Riley as she passed her table.
Riley nodded back with a genuine smile. She liked Olivia. Mostly she liked that Olivia never seemed to judge her like the rest of the women at court.
It wasn’t her fault that she’d had more than her fair share of men. Very few people at court knew the truth about any of her marriages or bothered to give her a benefit of a doubt. No, it was much easier to villainize and look down on her.
The maître d’ approached the table and handed her a folded note. She read it quickly and then tucked it into her bag with a smile.
She reached across the table and took Rashad’s hand with a little squeeze. “Thank you for always being there for me.”
“Of course, Ya Amara.”
She blushed slightly at the old term of endearment.
He helped her to her feet and brushed his lips lightly across her cheek when it was time for them to part. Riley would always have a special place in his heart, but he had a date to get to.
Riley was greeted by a guard at the door to the restaurant. “Right this way, Your Grace.”
“Thank you, Marco.” She took his arm and let him lead her out to the polo fields. “How have you been?”
“Can’t complain.” He grinned at her. “I’ve missed seeing your face around the palace.”
“You might be seeing me a little bit more now.”
“I hope so.” He stopped outside the king’s private box. “You’re good for him, you know. He’s happier when you’re around.”
“I’m happier when I’m around him.” She giggled before waving goodbye to the guard and ducking into the box.
The king of Cordonia was on his feet immediately. “Riley, you came!”
“Of course, I came, my king!”
They embraced but separated quickly. Experience had taught them that a camera could be anywhere.
Liam gestured toward a chair as he told her, “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you, too.”
“You met with Rashad?”
“I did.” Her divorce from Max was finalized.
His eyes traced her face. “I’ll always be indebted to him for bringing you into my life, you know.”
Riley threw her head back and laughed. It was a velvety, rich sound and it came from deep down inside. When she was done, she tilted her head back down and shook it side to side. “Even though when I met you, I was married to him?”
“Even so.” Liam nodded happily. “It was an arranged marriage. You weren’t in love with him.”
“No. Nor him, I.” What they had formed was a deep affection for each other and a friendship. So, when she had fallen in love with another, he had graciously let her go.
With a hefty settlement.
That was when the rumors of her gold-digging started. She had tried to decline taking anything since she was the one asking to break their marriage contract, but Rashad had insisted that she should be compensated for putting up with his late hours, and his inability to fully commit to the marriage or her.
But the council had refused to green-light a royal marriage to a divorcée.
Liam leaned close to her with a wicked grin. “If your marriage to my brother didn’t dissuade me in my pursuit of you, nothing will my lady.”
Riley laughed again with another shake of her head. “Oh, no, that…that was….”
She had found Leo drunk in a Cordonian nightclub days after being thrown over by some woman on a cruise ship. His drunken heartbreak had matched her own that night.
One thing had led to another with Leo, and they had woken up in Monaco the next day, married.
They had realized it was a horrible mistake the moment they were both sober. Liam had made the matter disappear.
“That marriage barely counted,” she reminded him, “You had it annulled within hours.”
“Of course I did.” He would move heaven and earth for her. His face fell serious as the mention of her day-long marriage to Leo reminded them both of her marriage to Drake. She had only been in that bar that night because she’d had her own sorrows to drown, her divorce from Drake having been finalized earlier that day.
That one had hurt.
The only husband she had actually loved. But they both knew why that marriage had failed.
Liam reached discreetly for her hand. “Riley, I’m sorry.”
“Stop. It wasn’t your fault. I’ve told you a million times.”
Liam had married Madeleine and not wanting to be someone’s mistress, Riley had forced herself to move on, but her feelings for Drake had never been fake or secondary to her feelings for Liam. She had counted herself lucky to have found love again. But Drake’s insecurities and jealousy eventually soured the relationship.
“I feel like I didn’t hide my feelings for you well enough.”
“It shouldn’t have mattered. I was never anything but faithful to him. He should have trusted me.”
Her marriage to Drake should have quashed the rumors that she was a gold digger, but everyone had assumed she was using him to stay close to Liam.
Unfortunately, Drake himself had chosen to believe that. And though she hadn’t cared about money, he had constantly compared himself to both Rashad and Liam and found himself lacking.
It hadn’t helped that Liam had made her a duchess and given her Valtoria right after the divorce from Drake. He had done it to give her a place of her own to go to. She hadn’t wanted to run back to the palace and give any weight to the rumors that she and the king were still romantically entwined.
Giving her a duchy, however, had ramped the rumors up to a fever pitch and convinced Drake that he had been right all along.
“How is Max doing?” Liam asked, mostly to change the subject.
The mention of her best friend put the smile back on her face. “Oh, he’s great! He’s on a ski weekend in Aspen with Carson.”
Riley’s marriage to Max had been undertaken to satisfy some weird codicil in his father’s will that he be married to inherit.
Last month, his father’s estate had finally been settled. Max had taken possession of the money left to him along with a lavish townhouse in Dunwich.
The day after the estate had been finalized, they had initiated divorce proceedings.
“I’m glad Max is happy. Can I ask a favor of you, Riley?”
“What is it?”
“Stop getting married to other people.”
A surprised laugh burbled out of her. “What?”
“You heard me. Give a guy a chance.”
“Liam! You’re married! You know how I feel about—"
“Yes, I do. I have something for you. Stay right here!” Liam looked like a kid on Christmas morning as he stepped to the door of the box and murmured something to his head of security. The guard handed him a large manilla envelope and Liam quickly returned to his seat and with the closest thing to a gloat Riley had ever seen on his face, thrust it into her hands.
“What’s this?” She looked curiously from him to the envelope.
“Open it!” He encouraged.
“Okay…” she laughed as she flipped the top open and then pulled the document out. Her eyes widened with a gasp when she realized what she was holding in her hands. “Liam! Is this real?”
“Yes, my love, it’s real. You’re the first person, outside the lawyers, of course, to know about the dissolution of the marriage of the king and queen.”
She glanced back and forth from him to the divorce decree in her hands, unsure what it meant for them. “How is this possible? The council—”
“The council answers to me. Not the other way around.” Liam’s jaw clenched. He had been young and uncrowned when he and Riley had first met. Still under his father’s thumb and more easily influenced by the rules, protocols, and traditions. He had grown over the years into a true king. He had learned how to rule, and his father was now nothing more than a memory. He would no longer be bound by arbitrary and pointless regulations. He could rule Cordonia and still be happy.
His expression softened as his eyes roamed her face. He angled his body toward her, completely oblivious to whatever was going on out on the polo field. Taking her hands in his, he asked, “You know what this means, right?”
“What?” She held her breath. Afraid to hope for what she was hoping for.
“It means we’re finally single at the same time. And this time, I will not be swayed from your side. Not ever again. Come here.” He stood and helped her out of her seat, pulling her across the room to a corner not visible from the outside. “I wanted to do this somewhere romantic. Somewhere meaningful, but I can’t wait.”
“What are you doing, Liam?”
“What I should have done four years ago.” He dropped down to one knee and held a ring up to her. “Lady Riley Brooks, queen of my heart, I have yearned to say these four words for a very, very long time……..will you marry me?”
“Yes!” She didn’t even have to pause to think about it. “Yes! A million times yes!”
He slid the ring on her finger and then jumped to his feet. “Finally!” He cried as he swept her into his arms and spun her around.
She was single again. But not for long.
***************************************
‘I am dreading this, Drake,’ Camille groaned. ‘Why does it have to be a whole weekend?’
Drake Walker let out an exasperated sigh. ‘Because Olivia is an asshole, that’s why.’
The two of them were trudging through the snow behind the group. Liam, Hana and Maxwell were ahead, all laughing and joking. It was Drake and Camille, the two unwilling participants, at the back.
They were spending the weekend at Olivia's castle in Lythikos as part of the suitor competition. Camille had never been before and so far, she was out of her comfort zone. New York had cold, bitter winters, yes. But Lythikos was another level.
‘She hates me,’ Camille continued, stomping her way through the heavy snow. ‘I know all the suitors have to do this but I just feel like she’s going to make my weekend a living hell.’
‘Welcome to my life, Montespan,’ Drake said through gritted teeth. ‘Everyday with Olivia Nevrakis is like Groundhog Day.’
‘Oh, are you Bill Murray?’ Camille quipped, her tone lightly teasing.
Drake stopped in his tracks and gave her a withering look. ‘Hey. I am obviously Andie MacDowall.’
Camille burst out laughing. Drake felt his heart skip a beat at the sound. He liked making her laugh even though he shouldn’t.
Stop it. Stop enjoying this.
‘Alright, come on Andie,’ Camille crowed, taking Drake by the arm and pulling him along. ‘We should catch up with the others.’
‘Oh joy..’ Drake muttered.
**************************
Lythikos Keep was a fortress of solitude.That was all Drake could say about it. Most people would say it was a medieval castle that held centuries of rich Cordonian history within its walls but for Drake, it was as cold and empty as the woman who lived in it.
Olivia Neverakis was very tall and slender with skin like porcelain. Her red hair hung down her back in waves and her eyes were blue and catlike. Everything about her was intimidating and that was exactly how she liked it.
She showed the group to their respective bedrooms, leaving Drake and Camille until last.
Hana, Maxwell, Kiara and Penelope were to stay on the fifth floor. Madeline and Liam were to stay on Olivia’s floor which occupied the top of the castle.
 Drake was expecting to be housed in the dungeon but clearly, Liam had spoken to Olivia before she had any ideas. His bedroom was on the third floor opposite Camille’s.
‘I thought the two Americans would like to be near each other,’ Olivia explained, her eyes focusing on Drake. ‘Since you have more in common.’
Camille frowned. ‘Olivia, that’s not fair on Drake, he’s Liam’s best friend-’
‘It’s fine,’ Drake interrupted. ‘I’m used to Olivia’s hospitality.’  He cast a glance over at Camille, who was clenching her hands into fists.  ‘That doesn’t mean you should put up with it though.’
Camille looked up at Drake. ‘Drake, you shouldn’t be putting up with it either.’
Olivia’s eyes flashed. ‘Are you insulting my hospitality, Camille? If you like, you can stay in the dungeon. I can easily ask my servants to move your things-’
‘Don’t talk to her that way,’ Drake cut in, his voice like ice.
Olivia raised an eyebrow. ‘You’re awfully protective over her, Drake. Anything to tell me?’
Drake’s chest puffed out as he stared at Olivia with narrowed eyes.
He had grown up with her and he knew how she worked. Everything to Olivia was a game and she always had to come out on top.
Her one weakness was Liam.
Everyone knew she was in love with him, including Liam himself. But she would never have him. ‘The she-wolf of Lythikos’ was what some people called her and Drake didn’t blame them.
‘I’m just saying that since it's her first visit here, she should be near her friends,’ Drake bit back. ‘That’s all.’
‘Drake, we’re friends!’ Camille protested. ‘We can be hall mates.’
Olivia rolled her eyes. ‘God, you’re so.. Peppy. Right, wine and cheese downstairs in fifteen minutes. Don’t be late.’
‘Whereabouts downstairs do we meet you…?’ Camille asked but trailed off as Olivia was already strutting away down the corridor.
Camille sighed and rolled her eyes. ‘Fine, we’ll just find our own way through this fortress of solitude then..’
Drake held back a smile as he picked up her suitcases  - yes, she had brought two suitcases for one weekend. ‘Come on, Montespan,’ he said, ‘open the door.’
Camille blushed. ‘I can carry my own things, Drake.’
‘I know,’ he said, ‘but since hospitality is at such a low bar, I figured I should at least help you.’
Camille giggled and opened the door to let them both inside.
Drake put her suitcases down on the floor and turned to face Camille. ‘So, meet you in the corridor in fifteen minutes?’
Camille gave him a mischievous look. Drake looked at her warily. He knew that look already. He'd seen it whenever she shared a dirty joke with Maxwell or gossiped with Hana.
‘What the hell are you planning, Montespan?’
Camille reached into her handbag and brought out a hipflask. ‘Fancy some whisky?’
Drake blinked, staring at the hip flask in her hand. She shook it so the liquid sloshed inside, full of promise.
‘Hell yeah,’ Drake finally said, his voice coming out like a croak.
Camille grinned and opened the hip flask. She passed him it and as he took it, their fingers brushed gently.
Drake tossed his head back as he took a long sip. The whisky burned his throat. God, it tasted good.  He passed her the hip flask back and she took a swig, not once tearing her eyes off his. Drake stared at her, his eyes boring into hers.
‘You surprise me, Montespan..’ he murmured.
Camille shrugged, giving him a shy smile. ‘Let’s stick together this weekend,’ she said softly.
Drake took the hip flask from her and sipped from it again
I’ve got you, kid.’
************************
Drake didn't like wine.
Tonight's event was wine tasting, canapes and cheeseboards which Drake also didn't like. A cheeseboard was NOT a dessert option!
He stood beside Liam as they sipped red wine from crystal glasses.
‘I appreciate you coming here, Drake,’ Liam told him warmly. ‘It’s nice to see you being social.’
Drake grimaced. ‘Someone’s gotta look out for Montespan.’
Liam looked from Drake to where Camille was sitting talking to Hana and Maxwell, as she always did. ‘Looks like Hana and Maxwell look out for her too,’ he replied wistfully.
Drake swallowed and took a long sip of his wine. He always had to be careful with what he said in front of Liam. He couldn’t let Liam have an inkling that Drake sort of, maybe, kind of liked Camille.
It was fine though. It was just a small crush. He could push it down and then he would get over it.
Drake watched Camille as she talked to Hana and Maxwell. She was focusing on what Maxwell was saying, her eyes trained on him, smiling as he continued speaking. When Camille spoke to you, she made you feel like the only person in the world.
It was just a crush.
***********
Later that evening, the group settled down by the fire for drinks. Olivia made sure that she sat beside Liam, giving him her utmost attention.
Camille settled down beside Drake. Their legs grazed as she moved beside him, making Drake feel like he was on fire.
Or maybe that was just the fire beside him.
‘Having a nice time?’ she asked softly, giving his shoulder a nudge with hers.
‘Now I am,’ Drake said before he could stop himself. He turned bright red as soon as he said it.
Camille smiled. ‘Good, I’m glad.’
Their eyes held for a long moment until the sound of Olivia clearing her throat broke their gazes.
‘So Drake..’ Olivia said, her voice wheedling. ‘How’s Savannah?’
Drake felt his blood run cold. He hadn’t been expecting to hear his sister’s name ever since she had disappeared. Savannah had tried so hard to fit in with Olivia and Madeleine but it had never been enough. She had been gone for ten months and Drake had no idea where she was.
‘None of your business, Olivia,’ Drake muttered.
‘Charming!’ Madeleine cut in, her voice lilting. ‘You going to let him talk to you like that, Livvy?’
Olivia narrowed her eyes at Drake as she held her wine glass in her hand. ‘No I’m not. Watch how you talk to me, Walker. You’re a guest at my castle this weekend, I demand respect. I know that’s hard for you but this weekend, just try it.’
‘Liv, enough..’ Liam muttered. ‘Please just be nice-’
‘I am being nice,’ Olivia interrupted. ‘I’m asking him about Savannah.’
‘And I’m telling you it’s none of your business,’ Drake said cooly.
‘Who’s Savannah?’ Camille asked.
Drake closed his eyes. He hadn’t told Camille about his sister. He hadn’t wanted to open up like that. Unburdening himself seemed like more trouble than it was worth.
‘His sister, of course!’ Madeleine said. ‘Come on, Camille, you’ve been spending so much time with Drake, you didn’t know about her?’
Camille frowned and looked down at her wine glass. ‘No..’ she said quietly.
‘Wow, I guess the two Americans don’t really know each other after all,’ Olivia quipped, running her finger along her wine glass.
Drake stood up abruptly. Without a word, he slammed his wine glass down on the table and strode away from the sofa area. He pulled open the French doors that led outside. He needed air. He needed to get away from this situation.
****************************
As soon as Drake stepped outside, he realised that he hadn’t taken his coat or scarf. It was fucking freezing. Snow covered the ground and it was still falling.
‘Fuck it,’ Drake muttered. He strode through the snow, bracing himself as his boots plunged through. If he caught a cold, fuck it. He could spend a few days resting in his room at the palace, excused from social events. If he died from hypothermia, fuck it. He would be dead.
He kept walking until the snow felt heavy against his legs. Without one last fuck left to give, Drake slumped down on the snow and breathed out into the cold night air.
It was so dark. The stars above him twinkled in the sky. Looking up at them, he felt insignificant. That wasn’t new but at least, in the grand scheme of things, everyone who looked up at the stars felt insignificant. Under the milky way, everyone in the world was insignificant. Even Olivia Nevrakis.
Drake sighed. He thought about how quiet and despondent Camille had sounded when she realised she didn’t know who Savannah was. His heart tugged with guilt.
Camille was a woman who wore her heart on her sleeve. She cared deeply about people. She was an open book, always talking about feelings. If she wasn’t so beautiful and kind, Drake would have avoided her like the plague.
But he hadn’t avoided her like the plague. No, Drake had looked after her. When Liam was busy with the other suitors, Drake spent time with Camille. He would go out of his way to talk to her, see her, tease her. By being Camille, she had pulled Drake in and now he was in her world.
Camille wasn’t insignificant.
***********************
‘Drake.’
He looked up to find Camille standing over him. She was bundled up in a coat and scarf, her breath thick in the air.
‘Montespan? You should be inside-’
‘No, YOU should be inside,’ Camille interrupted. ‘Don’t let Olivia get to you! Come back inside and sit by the fire with me. We can talk. You’re not wearing a coat or scarf, you’re going to catch hypothermia-’
‘Fuck it..’ Drake droned, his voice monotone.
Camille stared at him for a long moment until she nodded, seeming to make a decision. Drake watched as she pulled her scarf from her neck.
‘Montespan, what are you doing-’
She sank down to her knees and wrapped her scarf around his neck. It was warm from her skin and it smelled of her perfume. Notes of jasmine and musk.
‘I don’t want you getting sick,’ Camille said quietly,’ and I don’t want you feeling bad.’
Her eyes fixed on his. Drake swallowed, unsure of how to react to how close she was, how intense she was. She had never been this intense with him before.
‘Olivia’s a bitch,’ Camille went on. ‘So is Madeline. They had no right to bring up your sister. I don’t know what happened with Savannah but it’s clearly a painful topic for you. But you should not be outside in the snow. You don’t belong out here, you belong with me.’
Drake started at her words. ‘W-with you?’
Camille bit her lip before smiling weakly. ‘We said we would stick together this weekend, didn’t we?’
Drake felt his heart sink. Of course. She wasn’t being all romantic. She was being his friend.
It’s just a crush.
Camille held out her hand to him. ‘Come back with me?’
Drake looked at her for a long moment. She was silhouetted against the moon which cast a silver glow over her. She looked even more beautiful than ever. He studied her, taking in everything about her. How her mouth quirked up at the corners so it looked like she was always smiling. He thought about her as a person. How she tried so hard to be kind to everyone, including him. How good a person she was. How genuine she was.
It’s not just a crush.
He gestured up to the sky. ‘Actually, do you wanna look at the stars with me?’
Camille blinked, not expecting Drake Walker of all people to ask her to look at the stars.
‘Uhh, sure..’
She sat down beside him, letting out a squeak as her ass settled on the snow. Drake let out a laugh. ‘Montespan, did you just squeak?’
‘No!’
‘You did! You sounded like a mouse!’
Camille covered her eyes with her hands. ‘Oh god, get me some more cheese!’
Drake grinned at her and the two of them slowly became quiet, looking up at the stars.
‘I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about my sister,’ Drake said, his voice breaking the silence. ‘I should have.’
‘You don’t owe me anything, Drake,’ Camille replied. ‘It’s your business.’
‘Yeah but you tell me everything..’
Camille visibly swallowed. ‘Not everything..’ she whispered.
Drake wanted to ask her more. What did she not tell him? What was inside that mind of hers?
Before he could speak, Camille pointed up at the sky and let out a squeal. ‘Oh my god, Drake, a shooting star!’
Drake was alert now. ‘What?! Where?!’
‘In the sky, you idiot!’ Camille teased, playfully hitting his shoulder.
Drake turned red. ‘I meant, where in the sky, Montespan!’
Camille laughed and rested her head on his shoulder without warning. ‘You missed it,’ she said softly, ‘but it was beautiful. I’ve never seen a shooting star before. I should make a wish.’
Drake was afraid to move. He didn’t want her to move either.
‘Whatcha gonna wish for, Montespan?’
Camille giggled. ‘For you to call me Camille.’
Drake let out a surprised laugh. ‘No chance.’
‘One day you will.’
Camille stood up, shivering now. ‘I’m cold,’ she said simply.
Drake sighed and dragged himself to his feet. ‘I suppose we should go back in,’ he muttered. ‘Because it’s so fun at Olivia’s castle.’
His voice dripped with sarcasm.
Camille pressed her lips together to hold in laughter at how dry he was. Together, they began to walk through the snow. Drake breathed in the scent of Camille’s scarf, feeling warm.
‘Aah!’
Camille skidded. Drake caught her by the arm, pulling her into him so she didn’t fall. They remained pressed close to each other. Camille’s hands gripped his elbows.
‘I’m a clutz..’ she muttered.
‘Easy done,’ Drake murmured. He could feel his heart hammering in his chest and he hoped she couldn’t feel it. Slowly, they broke apart but Camille’s hand travelled down his arm to take his hand.
‘For safety,’ she said assertively.
Drake felt his heart leap in his chest. To cover his surprise, he smirked. ‘Sure. For safety.’
They held hands as they trudged through the snow, Camille’s delicate slender hands in Drake’s bear paw. As they got closer to the castle, they walked slower and slower.
‘Wanna just hang out here just us?’ Drake asked, half joking, half hopeful. ‘I’m good at camping, I can find us something to build a tent-like structure, burn some wood..’
Camille laughed and squeezed his hand. ‘As fun as that would be, I kind of want my bed.’
They were close to the castle now. Stopping, Camille looked up at Drake and gave hish hand another squeeze. ‘We stick together, remember?’
Drake smiled softly. He reached out to unwind Camille’s scarf from his neck. Silently, he wound it around her neck, making sure it was knotted comfortably. His fingers grazed her collarbone. In a moment, Camille’s hand reached up to grasp his wrist, keeping his fingers in place on her skin. Their eyes remained fixed on each other.
‘I’ve got you, kid,’ Drake told her.
It’s not just a crush.
Maxwell and Penelope: When You Like Your Side Character So Much, You Gift Her a Shiny New LI
Series - TRR's Alternative LIs: The Romances that Didn't Happen
Previous - Liam and Olivia: When You Prefer the Side Character to the Main
A/N: There won't be a lot of exploration on Maxwell x Penelope, as there is very little the pair gets in canon. I will be largely looking at their individual characterizations and the changes and retcons made there. There will be a lot of exploration on Penelope x Ezekiel.
CW: Mentions of Penelope's actions as part of Constantine's nefarious plot against the MC in TRR1 & 2, mentions of Penelope's social anxiety.
Compared to the other three alternative romances, Maxwell x Penelope turned out to be a bit of a one-chapter wonder. It was extremely short-lived, and the only indication that it had ever happened was one conversation between Penelope and the MC in TRR2 Ch 6, after which there is no reference to it, ever again.
In my mind there are two major factors behind this pairing being left behind, which I will get into later in this essay. However, what I find even more interesting is what the narrative and the writing team did with Penelope after they set aside that subplot. What did TRR3 give her in lieu of this alternative romance, and why, and what does it tell us about the narrative that she alone got that?
But before we can get into that, we need to look (separately) at how Maxwell and Penelope were written in TRR1, and how it culminated in the characterizations they got by TRR2.
The Evolution of (White) Side Characters
One thing that fascinates me about TRR1 is the trajectory of some of the characters, when you observe them on rereads. We often go into those rereads with a strong impression of their character type (or stereotype), before we learn to our surprise that the initial writing doesn't always match the image we carried in our heads.
In the case of some side characters, we may find traces and hints of a totally different characterization, before the team zeroed in on a trope or characteristic that may have hit the right chord with the audience. When done right, this could result in a more rounded character. But in the wrong hands, the writer may keep falling back to that one trope that made the character click, and turn them into caricatures instead.
Maxwell and Penelope are representative of different tiers of side characters, at least in TRR1 - which means that what we may expect in terms of treatment will vary as well. Even before TRR2, Maxwell was more LI-tier adjacent; until he got his LI-upgrade in TRR2, he was a frequent presence in the story and the MC's life, enough that his fans started a "Make Maxwell an LI" campaign. Penelope (along with Kiara) was a far less important character with infrequent appearances.
So of course their trajectories wouldn't be the same. It's interesting, nonetheless, to see how the writing changed over the course of the series, what parallels or complementary traits made the team consider Penelope as an alternative for Maxwell by TRR2, and why they ultimately let go of the pair after one chapter.
As we go through these stories, I think I'd like my readers to keep one thing in mind throughout - Penelope is an anomaly as a character. There are very specific things she is given that at least one other character in the same position doesn't get. Why?
I might not be able to give the answer in this specific essay, but I do think it's a question we need to keep asking ourselves as we go through her story.
Maxwell and Penelope - TRR1
A truly interesting thing about Maxwell was that he was initially not even conceptualized as a prominent character in the books! In their promotional interview for TRR2, Kara mentioned this about the creation of his character:
Tumblr media
Excerpt from The Royal Romance: Book 2 interview.
Maxwell was initially conceptualized as a fun foil for Bertrand, the MC's tentative guide for the social season - who the writers considered too stiff and boring to stand alone as a character. Owing to his proximity to both Liam (close friend) and the MC (sponsor), it made sense that Maxwell was a part of the group scenes from the jump.
Going by the interviews, clearly Maxwell's 'fun nature' was his main USP for the writers. TRR1 does try to balance this aspect of his personality with scenes where he shows perceptiveness (such as pointing out opportunities to ally with Kiara or Penelope), but as time goes on he is viewed more and more as the 'funny guy' of the group. He also has a side-story connected with his older brother, who isn't very impressed with his work during the social season (tbh, for good reason!). This side story allows us to view him with sympathy and perhaps overlook all his failures as a sponsor (and there are many examples of this throughout TRR1. Most of the opportunities to connect with the main LIs emerge from all the times Maxwell failed to adequately guide her - teaching her the Cordonian Waltz, explaining the significance of the Regatta Race, finding the right tents, telling the MC to get swimwear for a beach party!).
Of course, because TRR2 (where the Beaumonts are her staunch allies from the jump, even before the LIs return and pledge their support shortly after) and the "Make Maxwell an LI" campaign created such a strong impression on the fandom, people remember him most as the "person who was always there for the MC".
Though he doesn't become an LI in TRR1, we do get our first ever hint of the possibility midway through the book:
Tumblr media
(Screenshots from the HIMEME YouTube Channel)
Most of the people I know joined the TRR fandom either in the middle of Book 1, or after Books 2 or 3 - therefore, much of what I'm about to say next is down to conjecture. It is possible that either some stans did pop up in the initial chapters, resulting in the hint in Ch 8, OR that the writers tentatively teased this pairing with the dialogue at the Lythikos Ball, and were gratified enough by the response to continue teasing it. By TRR1 Chs 10 and 11, there was already plenty fanfic on Maxwell x MC. The writers were clearly encouraged enough by the response to toss a few more hints (the MC asking Maxwell about taking his shirt off at the beach, the implications of the MC telling Maxwell she is falling for someone else). Before the fandom knew it, Maxwell had already become the beneficiary of two diamond scenes focused on him in TRR1 (a flashback scene that introduced Savannah, and having fun sliding down banisters in the finale).
Penelope's trajectory in Book 1 didn't experience as meteoric a rise in popularity, but there were changes made throughout the series until she did become somewhat popular. Her trajectory could be categorised in three parts:
1. A minor noble who was very poised and proper (snobbish, if you weren't fitting in well enough)
2. Adorable ditz
3. The lady with social anxiety (TRR2)
From their entrance in TRR1 Ch 3, both Penelope and Kiara were written as extremely minor characters compared to the three frontrunners (and one female LI) of the social season. They accept early on that they don't have much of a chance in the competition, and are the first contenders (barring Hana) that the MC can get on her side. They represent the opinions and mindsets of the royal court.
Because of this, Penelope and Kiara initially appeared almost indistinguishable from each other. The only thing that seems to set them apart is perhaps the introduction Olivia gives at the Masquerade, pointing to Penelope's lineage and Kiara's linguistic skills and diplomatic pedigree. She was the titled one, Kiara was the "smart" one.
Tumblr media
(Penelope's scenes from my failplay, in order:
1 & 2: Ch 3, while speaking about Olivia's connection to the Prince, and if you ask her and Kiara why they allow Olivia to call them 'harpies'
3 & 4: Ch 4, Penelope's response to the MC saying, "Penelope, hands off my man"
5 & 6: Ch 6, if you don't fall in line behind the Queen and bump against her instead
7: Ch 6, when Olivia is shocked that Liam chose the MC
8: Ch 8, reaction to Olivia kissing Liam)
Penelope's early scenes in TRR1 didn't showcase the traits she is now so well-known for. She wasn't the "adorable ditz" until the Applewood chapters; in fact her scenes in the first half often showed her as poised and very proper. At the Masquerade she calmly points out to the MC that there is no reason to be offended, when Olivia bluntly declares that no one else has a chance with Liam. She expects decorum from the MC when she cuts in during her dance with Liam, and even comments on the inappropriateness of some of Olivia's behaviours and cautions her when she gets a chance. If your MC makes mistakes in public in certain scenes, Penelope doesn't hesitate to laugh at her.
Her allyship scene in Ch 10 hinges on the MC's ability to convince Penelope of the advantages of supporting her, and rescuing the lady from a crab bite. She is extremely rude in certain options, and ends their conversation with the sentence "I'm not nice" if she isn't convinced the MC is worth supporting. In fact, she is allowed to call the MC a commoner wench in a certain dialogue option!
Tumblr media
(Screenshots from my failplay. The top half shows a response to one of the MC's dialogues (she is merely sad if you choose the second one). The second is the end of the conversation when the MC asks for her support)
In a failplay especially, she can be very, very mean-spirited, which is truly ironic given her later characterization as someone who is herself uncomfortable in court and makes more than her fair share of silly mistakes. Fortunately for most of the players, the more "positive" version of the scene sounds a bit more like she's scared and uncomfortable and not equipped to handle the rigors of court. Which makes the "adorable ditz" direction that PB takes, post Regatta, a bit more believable.
Once Penelope is no longer a contender, both she and Kiara recede to the background. You don't see much of her in Applewood and Ramsford, but the little you do see primes us to view her as "sweet and silly" with a bit of a poodle obsession. Two very good examples of this is the "cheating scene" at the pie competition (TRR1 Ch12) and the aftermath of the Beaumont Bash (Ch 16). At the pie competition, Olivia and the MC can team up to distract Penelope so they trick the rival team into adding salt in their pie instead of sugar, by getting her to talk more about her poodle obsession. At the end of the Beaumont Bash, she is shown exchanging drunken chatter with a horse. The book also makes her preoccupation with poodles way more obvious, where before it was brought up only once at the Masquerade Ball.
Discrepancies between portrayals in the first book vs the latter ones is par the course for TRR. Every character has those in some way or form. Maxwell's story in TRR1 and 2 at least could make sense with enough headcanons to fill in the gaps (for why he was inefficient in his support of the MC, for why his relationship with Drake was so fraught) and his characterization is a little bit more consistent. But Penelope's, on closer observation, is a complete mess and her story doesn't make any sense when put together.
Maxwell and Penelope - TRR2
Compared to the other three pairings, Maxwell x Penelope doesn't go beyond a single chapter.
This solitary hint pops up in TRR2 Ch 6, right after the Big Clue about Penelope's social anxiety. We're given the usual options one gets for alternative LIs - a "matchmaking" one, a gently discouraging one and an insulting one, the last two of which could be read as jealousy from the MC's end. In fact, the MC's third dialogue option in this scene is so mean spirited that Hana is required to soften the blow!
There's something interesting about the matchmaking response for this scene, and I think it says plenty about the writers and the lasting impression of these characters they wanted us to have.
"You're both a bit silly...but in a way that works." It's a reading of Maxwell and Penelope that leans very strongly into their potential as comic relief, that views the two characters as alike. Both "cute", both "silly", both there to give the characters (and readers) the occasional laugh.
Is this completely accurate to their characterizations in TRR1? Probably not. But it's clearly what the writers imagined would work well for those characters.
Interestingly, TRR2 is also where the team seems to experiment more with these two characters, and finds the characterizations they think would land with the audience. Maxwell's changes are related more to the belated buildup the narrative was giving him to be an LI, and most of Penelope's was related to her role in the plot against the MC. Maxwell is given more heroic traits (eg. the Savannah storyline and his involvement in the investigation) to beef up his story a bit, and plenty of hints are scattered specifically to tease a romantic route with the MC for more than half the book. The narrative also leans far more into his position as comic relief than TRR1 does, making it his most identifiable trait.
There are tiny nods to his "perceptiveness" (Liam mentions it twice in TRR2), but he does a lot of things that you wouldn't see a TRR1 Maxwell do, like tossing a bruschetta at a foreign dignitary or playing with food to get the forgiveness of his friend (btw the Drake Maxwell friendship reads very differently from the first book; they're remarkably chilly in their vibes towards each other initially. Of course, one could headcanon what caused a rift, but that's still us doing the work instead of the writers!!).
Because so much time has to be spent bringing Maxwell's romantic route up to speed with the rest, the progress of the relationship is different from the other three and his romantic scenes cost less (until TRR3 Ch 10, his first 30 diamond scene). Much of this is par for the course for an LI who has entered the game late. In addition, the narrative also tries in TRR2 and 3 to balance his role as the MC's sponsor with his new role as LI, and it doesn't always land (eg. his excitement for Liam's proposal to the MC two chapters after becoming an LI, or his weirdly impersonal reaction in the TRR3 Ch 11 Armory diamond scene in his playthrough, in response to Madeleine mocking Liam for the MC favouring Maxwell). In part this is a result of laziness from PB's end, and in part it's because navigating Maxwell's new role itself may have been a tricky business.
Penelope's TRR2 trajectory, in contrast, is the textbook definition for "throw spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks". Hints of her involvement in the plot don't even show up until Ch 6, just one chapter prior to the reveal. The reasoning given for Penelope's actions in TRR1 - social anxiety - also directly contradicts what is shown of her during the timeline when she was supposed to have been involved in the plot. TRR1 Ch 14 and the Coronation at the finale shows her acting calm, collected and enjoying herself. A lot of Penelope's actions in TRR1 and 2 - esp at the Coronation and in Fydelia - cast an extremely poor light on her when you take into account that she knew the MC was innocent, and that she'd played a part in framing her. From the way the reveal of her condition was done, and the way we're expected to brush her wrongdoing aside immediately, it's clear that Penelope's "social anxiety" was more about tossing in a last-minute Hail Mary to excuse her actions, rather than any real interest in exploring the subject.
Given the sloppy execution of this reveal, it is entirely possible that Madeleine could have been the "lady" in initial drafts (the strongest evidence of this is TRR2 Ch 1's "constitutional clause", which is never referenced again once Madeleine is no longer a suspect), and they made a switch in the nth hour.
It is also possible that writers in the team liked Penelope enough that they wanted readers to still like her after she'd betrayed their MCs. She hasn't been referenced or mentioned in any team interviews, but the writing speaks for itself. No matter what she's done, the narrative insists the MC center her, sympathize with her, and coddle her. I will speak more at length on how in the TRR3 section.
Why did Maxwell x Penelope Not Take Off?
Tumblr media
Unlike in the case of the other pairings, not a lot was said in the fandom about this pair either way, even among Maxwell stans. You did have the occasional "hands off my man!" post from a Maxwell shipper, but not to a great extent. At this point many of them were still unsure whether a Maxwell route would be finalized, and even kept Liam as a standby in case all that teasing from the team came to nothing.
Again, most of the theories for why this pairing had just one scene are mere conjecture, since there isn't much evidence overall. But looking at the placement of this scene and what happens before and after it, I can think of two possible reasons why it was nipped in the bud:
1. Maxwell being a late-in-the-game LI could have made balancing an actual romance route and interactions with an alternative love interest tricky in the long run. As it is, his writing was subject to gaffes and mistakes in TRR3 even without this added storyline. It's possible they decided to just ensure that they got Maxwell to the point where he could have his own 30-diamond love scene (which happened in TRR3 Ch 9 btw (half a book after Drake and Hana got their first 30-diamond scenes), and not focus on anything else.
2. This teaser scene came up in Ch 6. Ch 7 is when Penelope is revealed to have tricked Tariq into coming to the MC's room, and paid the photographer to take intimate photos of her. Now to be fair, the narrative does insist she be sympathized with rather than judged. But I do think a subplot like that would automatically make her an unpopular candidate for any LI, much less one who hasn't even been clearly established as an LI yet! Having Maxwell fall for a woman who did the MC dirty wouldn't reflect very well on him, social anxiety or no. In fact, in Ch 8, Maxwell's reaction to the news is the strongest - he calls Penelope "a few dogs short of a pack", "downright diabolical" and even suspects she was lying about having poodles.
3. It is just as likely that Maxwell x Penelope was never a serious consideration for the writers in the first place. Possibly, Penelope's scene here was simply another hint in a rising pile that teased a Maxwell romance route. Players often do get an added pleasure from watching their MCs mouth a catty dialogue or two to a romantic rival, so this scene may have been more for the benefit of a Maxwell stan who wanted to "fight for her man" rather than an actual possibility if he wasn't getting picked.
Whatever their reasons, Maxwell and Penelope's chances as a couple ended pretty much in the same chapter that it began. It didn't create much of an impact, and no one really seemed to notice this pairing, or the lack of it. It basically started and finished with a whimper.
TRR3 and Beyond - Penelope and Ezekiel (ft. A Flanderized Maxwell)
Penelope is an anomaly among the side characters (and even among certain mains!) in both series'. She is the only person seriously involved in the plot against the MC, who needs massive coddling to even answer our questions about her betrayal (if not, Hana has to take over for you). She is the only lady-of-the-court who can refuse to attend your wedding. She is the only lady-of-the-court who can choose to travel with the entourage to another duchy, despite not being part of the Unity Tour. She is the only one among the three former ladies-in-waiting who can openly complain about Madeleine's bullying, and expect protection against her from the group. Until TRH2, Penelope was the only side character for whom massive divergences in the narrative would be made as well, to accommodate her comfort and mental health (More on that in this essay).
She is also the only alternative LI to be "rewarded" with a brand new character, crafted specially for her.
Tumblr media
Until TRR3 Ch 7, the fandom didn't even know Kiara had an older brother. Even though the person we know best in Castelserraillan is Kiara, we actually spend less than a minute with her, and far more time with Ezekiel Theron. There is an entire diamond scene that's about pampering and complimenting him, making him comfortable around us, getting him to open to us - even though his sister was the one injured at Homecoming Ball. And of course, the entire reason for Penelope to even be present at Kiara's estate is so that she and Zeke can be paired up by default! Even at the Food and Art Festival, Kiara's only real default dialogue apart from winning over her mother (or not), is about moving Penelope and Ezekiel's romance along.
Both Penelope and Ezekiel join the Unity Tour only by option, so the narrative puts in a great deal of effort to get the romance going (by having Penelope only stop at Kiara's estate by default) and allowing the two to still have a fledgling courtship going on if they weren't together at the Unity Tour (Penelope still gets to meet people who inspire her into dog fashion and she and Zeke still show their interest in each other, propelling the parents to discuss their match).
The only thing we know about Ezekiel, and pretty much the only thing that really matters, is that he loves animals. In a court that views Penelope's love for dogs as an oddity, Ezekiel is a character tailormade to romance her. He rarely features in scenes that don't show her (the only exception is the menagerie scene in Ch 14), he rarely has dialogue outside of his scenes with her, he doesn't even have a personality beyond what would best suit Penelope. This character exists only to romance Penelope, which is depressing esp when you consider that she is a white woman, and he is a black man - and she is clearly the only one who even matters in this relationship!
There wasn't any real reason to give Penelope a partner. "Penzekiel" doesn't really do much for the story in general, and not a lot would change if you dropped them. But the narrative deems it essential to give her a "reward", which is ironic considering what she put the MC through and how much we had to coddle her for her to even consider cooperating, either in the investigation or during the Unity Tour. Presumably this "reward" is for her "niceness" and "sweetness", which only works because the narrative completely erases her misdeeds in the social season after TRR2. She never has to remember what she did, nor does anyone in the core group remind her.
With regards to Maxwell, by TRR3 he is a full-fledged LI who gets a wedding with his MC, in certain playthroughs. Much of his playthrough focuses on trying to catch up with the other 3 LIs - you can sleep with them if they're your fiancé/ée, but you have to wait until Ch 10 to sleep with Maxwell. The narrative mentions him taking up "responsibilities" for House Beaumont in lieu of Bertrand, but without any real scenes that show us what he is doing, nor any tangible results (we will not talk about Maxwell's book here!).
He doesn't have any alternative romances. In fact even his romantic playthrough is kinda bare - his only individual scene is the Armoury scene which isn't even about him, and there were glitches that were very noticable particularly in his and Hana's playthroughs. There are no references at all to the alternative romance Maxwell was given in TRR2; it's almost as if that option had never existed.
Penelope being a romantic option for Maxwell doesn't stop the two from having friendly exchanges in TRR3 though. Maxwell was not only allowed - but expected - to treat Penelope with sympathy and respect.
Tumblr media
(First set of screenshots is mine, the second is from Skylia's YouTube Channel)
Not only Maxwell, even Drake - who hates most nobles - is shown being extremely protective of Penelope in both TRR3 (promising Penelope to protect her against Madeleine) and TRH3 (showing anger at Guy's blackmail of Penelope and her family). The narrative is very clear that we are expected to make Penelope feel safe, even if she has never made us feel anything but unsafe.
This relationship - and the level of coddling that Penelope has always received from TRR2 onwards - continues into TRH, where she and her beau Ezekiel are shown together, there are occasional updates on their relationship when either one appears in a chapter, and where they eventually marry and start a family. An interesting pattern begins to emerge once we get into TRH.
Tumblr media
(Screenshots from Skylia and HIMEME's YouTube Channel)
As the only courtly lady in a relationship in TRH, Penelope gets a nicer, cleaner, more luxurious and more drama-free parallel to the MC's romantic journey. Like the MC, she finds a suitor who falls for her and wants to be with her. Like the LI, he eventually stages a grand proposal for her (TRH2 Ch 18), after they have spent a significant amount of time together. Like the MC, she has a widely publicized wedding (though tbh Penelope's was better customised to her tastes, and as the MC we put even more work into her wedding than we ever did our own!! (we were both her bridesmaid and her officiant, our daughter is the flower girl, we give her the perfect bachelorette, we rescue her from her asshole ex-husband, we help her select lingerie!!!)). And when the MC announces her second pregnancy, Penelope announces to us her first. Penelope's storyline has all the romantic trappings that the MC had with her LI, but without the tension, the conspiracies, the attacks and kidnappings, or the constant fear that someone is out to get her and her family.
Penelope is basically treated like MC-lite. Quite the upgrade for a mere side character who actually did us dirty at one point.
Does Maxwell - her potential LI for all of one chapter - suffer as a result of this upgrade? Apart from the Flanderization, I would say no, he actually didn't.
He doesn't get the lavish Drake treatment, true, but he is centered in the issues that bother him. The MC, by default, has always been expected to defend him to Bertrand from TRR1 onwards, and often argues that Maxwell tried as hard as he could to help her, even when he didn't. Her sympathy towards him whenever Bertrand justifiably berates him for his negligence is by default too. And while he improves in TRR2 and (somewhat) 3, in TRH3 the entire group is thrown into this position again. Even though Maxwell exaggerates events in his friends' lives to an insulting degree in his book and the subsequent movie adaptation, the group often brushes their discomfort aside and supports him instead. And even though his lies in said book about Bertrand (TRH2 Ch 11) indirectly cause the latter to give up his lands to their father (resulting in Bartie Sr's attempt to usurp the throne), the MC spends all of the next book comforting him, involving him in her investigations, and patting his hand sympathetically while he moans about the father who killed the former queen of the country, all while ignoring the son of the woman Bartie Sr. killed, and raging against the elder brother who is secretly supporting them (even after the reveal, the group judges Bertrand heavily and even suspects him of being part of Via Imperii in TRF). Very little is said - either by Maxwell himself or by anyone else - about his role in facilitating this awful takeover.
All in all, Maxwell may have not gotten an alternative LI at the end of the day, and his overall LI path was pretty messy - but there was some thought and consideration put into his writing. The focus on Penelope and her new romance never actually harmed Maxwell.
Fandom
As I've mentioned before, Maxwell wasn't an LI in the beginning, but rose to LI status in Book 2. While the writers did make claims once in their TRF finale livestream that they had planned to make him an LI all along, I find that a bit hard to believe. From the way the hints were dropped it's way more possible that this was a development that came up once enough people in the fandom found him attractive enough to be LI material.
As the Make Maxwell an LI campaign grew in popularity, the fandom often held a rosy view of him, calling him "the only valid white guy", celebrating his queerness (as they should! It was hinted that he was pansexual in TRR2 Ch 18), showered him with sympathy and called Bertrand names for berating him. None of the nitpicking that certain other LIs would get for not supporting her properly, ever touched Maxwell. Nor did the fandom - who did criticize him quite a bit for his trashy book, and protested his Flanderization - ever view him with anything besides sympathy when he struggled to believe his father was evil, after he'd encouraged his brother to make said father the head of Beaumont House. This was the same fandom that didn't hesitate to find the most nonsensical excuses to trash Liam.
The Maxwell-Penelope scene was a fun way for some Maxwell stans to allow their MCs to act a bit possessive of him, and they were very critical of Penelope's betrayal later. But the overall response to Penelope's storyline was overwhelmingly positive. Many related to what she said about suffering from social anxiety, and especially to the lines about her emotional support poodles (ironically in another book, Sloane Washington got scant sympathy or respect despite clear indicators that she suffered from social anxiety too), and were quick to forgive.
(I must confess I was among this portion of the fandom too, but with the belief that she would address it more strongly herself in TRR3)
Fandom didn't mind buying into the canon myths that Penelope was a "sweet, naive" girl, and part of this is understandable because not many got to see what she was like in the failplay. So it was easier to presume that she would still take a little responsibility and wholeheartedly regret her actions, without seeing the failplay scenes where she is shown expecting to be treated like royalty by the woman she screwed over. Penelope and Ezekiel were viewed by most as a cute pair, with some (justifiably) liking this interracial match initially. Many readers who were fond of Penelope even criticized Kiara for being "mean" to her or "joining in Madeleine's bullying of her", when Kiara's behaviour was clearly more protective than harmful.
There was a slight rise in a general negative attitude towards Penelope in TRH3, when she could prioritise her wedding over the looming terror of the MC's child being taken away from her, and only speak up when the MC encouraged her at the altar. But very often people who made these criticisms clubbed her and Kiara together, as if they were a single unit...as if their actions and choices throughout the series were the same. As if Kiara got the same concessions and pampering that Penelope did. In reality, the choices the two women made - and the narrative treatment the two women got - couldn't be any more different.
Individually, Maxwell's and Penelope's stories show us what happens when the writers of a story lean too much towards fandom adulation, and allow it to dictate the way their stories will go. In both cases PB found a beat that the readers liked and stuck with it, never expanding beyond that one trait and causing the two to be caricatures of themselves. In Penelope's case especially, once her anxiety story resonated, the narrative used that to encourage readers to pamper her ad nauseum, and justified her lack of genuine care for anyone but herself through constant reminders of her mental health condition.
I will repeat the question I'd asked at the beginning of this essay - What did TRR3 give her in lieu of this alternative romance, and why, and what does it tell us about the narrative that she alone got that? That's a question I hope you'll keep asking in the next two essays.
“His Highness, Crown Prince Liam Rys.”
All conversations halted, and heads turned to the doors at the front of the room as Liam entered the ballroom. It was the final night of the social season, and he was only hours away from becoming the King of Cordonia.
This also meant he was only hours away from having to announce which suitor would become his queen.
He surveyed the room, observing each of the women, hoping for some sign as to who the right choice would be. He had spent the last few months with them at various events, spending one on one time with each woman, trying to make a connection or find a spark of something. He would always end up comparing them to her, and they would always come up short.
But she wasn’t here. She rejected the invitation.
Throughout the social season, his mind would drift to thoughts of Riley Brooks, memories of their night together. But that’s all they were, and all they would ever be. He had barely slept since the season began, spending his nights going over his options, trying to figure out who would be the best choice to rule by his side.
Kiara Thorton, a polyglot with a natural sense of diplomacy. She would certainly be an asset in building relationships and alliances. But would she have the compassion and candor needed to win over the citizens?
Penelope Ebrim, compassionate to a fault. However, her naivete would prove challenging during the more complex aspects of the job.
Hana Lee, a newcomer to Cordonian court. In the brief interactions Liam had with her, he found her to be kind yet incredibly timid and insecure. It was a toss up which one of them was least enthused to be a part of all of this. She was obviously there on her parent’s order alone.
Olivia Nevrakis, one of Liam’s oldest and dearest friends. She certainly cared for him, and he for her. But not the way a husband should care for his wife. Besides, she was a Nevrakis, a family with a checkered past in the Cordonian history books. She would be a controversial choice, questioned by many.
And finally, Madeleine Amaranth, the top contender in the press and with the council, including Liam’s parents. She had been his brother’s chosen suitor, jilted when he made the decision to abdicate. It was an unofficial betrothal agreement when they were children, so she had spent her whole life in training to sit on the throne. Everyone was sure that she would be Liam’s choice. Everyone, except for Liam.
While he did agree that Madeleine would be an excellent queen, there was something missing. He didn’t feel he could be the best king possible with her by his side. He needed a wife that would see him, and support him as a man, not just a king. He wanted to be able to retire for the evening and spend time as a family. He didn’t see that with Madeleine, her strength was also her weakness. He needed to be able to just be Liam sometimes, with Madeleine, he would always be the king.
“Little brother!” Liam was startled out of his thoughts by the sound of his brother’s voice.
“Leo? What are you doing here?”
“I couldn’t miss your big night!” He clapped his brother on the shoulder. “So, have you made your choice?”
Liam sighed at the question. His choice would have been for Leo to live up to his birthright, allowing him to remain the spare and hold on to a small semblance of freedom. “You will see in due time.” He responded, not wanting to admit that he still hadn’t decided.
“Oh, come on. Not even a hint?”
“How was the cruise?” Liam asked, diverting the attention away from himself.
“Ugh,” Leo groaned. “It didn’t go quite as planned.”
“So that woman, the one Madeleine found in your bed?”
“Yeah, she’s in someone else’s bed now.” He said nonchalantly.
Liam’s jaw ticked, as his fists clenched at his side. The woman who had captivated Leo so much that he had abdicated the throne, and put all of this on Liam’s shoulders, was with someone else. Leo gave everything up for nothing.
“Your Highnesses,” a voice interrupted before Liam could respond. The brothers turned to find a photographer holding up a camera to them. “Can I get a quick picture?”
“Of course, my good man!” Leo threw his arm around Liam, pulling him to his side. Liam put on his most stoic smile, hiding all of the emotions that were flowing through him in that moment.
Once the picture was taken, the photographer thanked the pair before bowing and stepping away.
“I don’t regret a second of it,” Leo continued once they were alone. “Everyone comes into your life for a reason, she helped me to see that this wasn’t the life I was meant for.” He signaled to the opulence of the room around them. “I needed to step away and find my own path. I’m not there yet, but I’m figuring it out.”
Liam nodded, noticing the parallels in their situations. In that moment, it all clicked, and he knew exactly what his decision would be. “If you’ll excuse me Leo, I need to meet with father before the announcement.”
“Of course, knock ‘em dead, bro!”
As Liam walked across the ballroom, looking for his father, his mind began to race. Maybe Riley wasn’t the love of his life, maybe that night was just meant to be a sign. Perhaps he could have it all, be the best king he could be without sacrificing his happiness.
“Excuse me,” Liam said, interrupting Constantine, who was deep in conversation with Madeleine's father. No doubt making plans for the impending engagement tour. “Father, if I may have a word with you, privately?”
“You’re going to be making your announcement shortly, we can speak afterwards.” He replied dismissively.
“Please, it’s urgent.” Liam insisted.
Constantine excused himself from his conversation and followed Liam into his study, closing the door behind him. As soon as they were away from the eyes of the court Liam’s demeanor changed, he seemed anxious, pacing back and forth across the floor. Constantine attributed it to the changes he would be going through in the next hour, and was grateful that he was able to conceal those emotions when he was in front of others.
“Godfrey and I were just discussing the engagement tour. We are going to begin in Fydelia, since it is the home of your future betrothed.” Constantine broke the silence in the room.
“I’m not choosing Madeleine.” Liam stated flatly.
Constantine’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Well, there will certainly be some damage control needed, but it’s not the end of the world. Don’t tell me you’ve chosen the Nevrakis girl. I know you two are close, but she was only invited to participate out of obligation. She cannot sit on the throne.”
“No, I’m not choosing Olivia.” Liam took a deep breath, preparing himself. “I will not be choosing one of the suitors.”
“But son, you need to be engaged to ascend the throne. You know I’m in poor health, I need to step down before…”
“That’s why I wanted to speak with you,” Liam interrupted. “I would like for you to make a change to the law. One final decree as reigning king.” He noticed his father’s trepidation, and continued speaking. “I just don’t think I can be the king Cordonia needs, or deserves, if I am married to one of those women. You know how important it is for a king to have the right queen by his side.”
“I do, that’s why I’ve been encouraging you to choose the countess. She has been preparing for this role since she was a child.”
“So have I, I went through all of the same lessons that Leo did. I can be a great king on my own, until I find a queen that will be good for this country, and for me.” Liam pleaded with his father.
Constantine studied Liam’s expression, he was steadfast and unwavering. “And if I refuse?”
“Then when I go up on stage tonight and I will announce my abdication. I believe the line of succession would then fall to the Nevrakis girl,” he mimicked Constantine’s earlier tone. “And you’ve made it quite clear how you feel about that.”
The reigning king’s eyes went wide at Liam’s ultimatum. “You would throw thousands of years of tradition away over this?”
“Over my happiness? Absolutely.” Liam’s expression softened in a final attempt to get his father to understand. “Cordonia deserves me at my best, and I cannot do that with one of these suitors, so I would rather step down than give them anything less.”
“You are certainly a fierce negotiator.” Constantine observed.
“I’ve learned from the best.” Liam replied, he smirked at his father, hoping to lighten the mood slightly. He was unsuccessful.
“And where do you imagine you’re going to find this woman?” Constantine asked. “I will not have you plastering your personal information all over these dating websites I’ve been hearing about.”
“No sir, I wouldn’t,” Liam assured. “I much prefer making a face to face connection.”
Constantine stood in pensive silence, thinking about Liam’s proposition, but also studying his son. He was looking for even the slightest break in his expression, but there was none. Liam knew he was being tested and failing was not an option.
“If I do this for you, you will make the announcement and deal with any of the fallout on your own.” He warned.
Liam nodded in understanding. “Of course.”
“Son, this conversation has shown me that you will be exactly the ruler this country needs.” Constantine placed a hand on his shoulder. “With or without a wife.”
“Thank you, father.” Liam’s tone remained even, afraid his father might change his mind if he showed too much enthusiasm. Inwardly, he was screaming.
“I will need about an hour to make the arrangements. You are to return to the ball, and keep this information to yourself. No one is to know until you step onstage and make the announcement.”
“Yes sir,” Liam extended a hand, which his father shook briefly before pulling him into a hug.
“I’m proud of you, son.” Constantine said, patting him on the back before pulling away. “Now get out there and keep everyone occupied.”
Liam nodded with a smile, and returned to the ball feeling lighter than he had in months.
As soon as he set foot in the ballroom, he was approached by Penelope, who asked him to dance. He obliged, and led her to the center of the floor. Penelope hadn’t stopped speaking once during their dance, but Liam didn’t hear a word she said. All he could think about was his announcement, and what this meant for him. He was one step closer to living his dream, and falling in love.
Once the dance was over, Liam parted ways with Penelope and made his rounds through the room, his eyes intermittently flickering toward the door. As the time passed, his nerves grew, worried that his father may renege on their agreement.
Liam was in the middle of a conversation with the Beaumonts when the music stopped, and a throat clearing over the speakers pulled his attention. He looked up to see his father standing on stage.
Once the crowd quieted down, Constantine began to address them. “The moment we’ve been waiting for all season has finally arrived. It has been my great honor to serve Cordonia these last few decades.” His expression sombered as he continued. “We’ve had turmoil, but Cordonia has pulled together even during our toughest times. I couldn’t be more proud to have been Cordonia’s king.”
The crowd applauded as Constantine searched the faces for his son. When his eyes locked on Liam, he nodded. Liam took the signal and made his way to the stage. When he took his spot at his father’s side, Constantine continued.
“I only now pass the crown to Prince Liam because I know he’ll carry on exactly as I have. I couldn’t ask for a better successor.”
“Father…” Liam’s expression softened, touched by his words.
“It’s true. I love your brother, but you are the king Cordonia needs.” He turned to smile at his youngest son before continuing. “You have more than proven that to me. Especially tonight. Today, I pass the royal signet ring to you. Cordonia is yours, my son.”
As the crowd cheered, Constantine took a step back, standing beside Regina, as Liam took his place in front of the microphone. “Thank you all for being here tonight. This is an incredible honor and a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I only hope that I can serve Cordonia with the distinction that my father did.” He turned to his father and step-mother, bowing to them before pulling them each into an embrace.
“And now, the time has come, your prince will choose his bride.” Regina announced.
“Actually,” Liam returned to the microphone. “In the interest of hitting the ground running, I spoke with my father earlier tonight, and he has put through one final decree as king.” Liam looked to his father, who nodded in approval. “I truly appreciate all of the ladies that participated in the season. Your grace and poise throughout the weeks has not gone unnoticed. Your unwavering support for this country is an inspiration. However, I will not be choosing a bride tonight.”
The crowd immediately broke into gasps and murmurs as they took in Liam’s announcement. He looked out over the confused faces, taking in each of the suitors' reactions. Shock appeared to be the general consensus, until his eyes landed on Madeleine. Her expression remained impassive, but he could see the fire in her eyes before she abruptly turned and exited the ballroom. Liam did feel bad for her, this was her second time thinking she would become queen, and the second time the opportunity had been taken from her.
Liam heard a throat clear behind him and he turned, locking eyes with Constantine. He didn’t have to say a word, Liam understood. He lifted a hand to silence the crowd. “If you will allow me to explain,” he said, once the noise had died down. “As I said, each of the suitors showed immeasurable grace and dedication to their country, all of which are crucial qualities for a queen. However, there was one very important qualification that I could not find. I was unable to connect with them in the way that a man should connect with his wife.”
He paused for a moment, allowing a few whispers of confusion to ripple through the room. “I want to give this country my absolute best. To do that, I believe that I need to forge my own path, and find the right partner for me, and for this country.”
Questions were shouted out rapid fire from the crowd, Liam once again raised a hand and waited for the room to quiet down. “I understand that there will be many questions and concerns, I will do my best to answer and address them all in due time. However, right now, we do need to proceed with this evening’s agenda. I appreciate your support, and look forward to continuing to guide Cordonia into greatness.”
Liam ignored the lingering comments that were scattered throughout the crowd, and the evening went on as planned. He took his oath and was officially crowned the king of Cordonia. Despite the upset earlier in the evening, the tone for the rest of the event was full of cheer and hope. There were, understandably, lingering doubts about Liam’s decision, but the court had enough faith in him to be able to celebrate this moment for what it was, a new beginning for Cordonia.
At the end of the night, once the guests had retired to their rooms, Liam sat on his throne, taking in the gravity of what had just happened.
“You know you don’t have to sleep on that thing, right?” The gruff voice of his best friend pulled him from his thoughts.
“I know,” Liam responded. “I suppose I’m just letting things sink in.”
“That’s fair,” he shrugged. “So what now?”
“Well, there will be a few interviews and photo ops with the press. I will need to be formally introduced to our allies and neighboring countries.” He paused for a moment. “I suppose we will need to rebrand what was supposed to be the engagement tour. I will work out the details in the morning.”
“Yeah, let’s talk about that for a second,” Drake smirked. “What happened?”
Liam let out a humorless laugh. “Leo, of all things.” Drake looked at him curiously. “I was speaking with him earlier, and he was telling me about that woman from the cruise. It didn’t work out.”
“Shocking.” Drake deadpanned.
“Right? Well, he said something that resonated with me.” Liam explained Leo’s theory, and how it inspired him to stand up to his father, and forge his own path.
“That’s great Li, I’m really proud of you for standing up for yourself.” Drake congratulated his friend. “So when are you going to New York?”
Liam’s gaze snapped up, meeting Drake’s. “What do you mean? Why would I go to New York?”
“For the waitress.” Drake said with an arched brow. He knew Liam better than that. “That’s what all of this was about, wasn’t it?”
“Not quite,” Liam sighed. “Riley was my sign, not my soulmate. She made it clear that my feelings are not returned.”
“What are you talking about? I’m pretty sure it was obvious to everyone but you that she was into you.”
“Then why didn’t she accept Maxwell’s offer to join the social season?”
“Seriously?” Drake slapped his palm against his forehead. “Listen, take a step back and look at it from her point of view. She has this whole life, a job, a family, friends, and you expected her to give all of that up and join this mess because of a couple of hours? Nobody in their right mind would do something like that.”
Liam let out a deep breath, shaking his head. “It doesn’t matter, the moment has passed. I’m sure she’s moved on.”
“Li, you literally changed history for this woman. You mean to tell me that you’re not even going to try?”
“I changed history for myself.” Liam corrected him.
“Fine, you changed history for yourself, but it was because of her.” Drake rolled his eyes. “You’ve got a couple of weeks before the tour starts, right?” Liam nodded. “Okay, so take care of all the press and that stuff now, once that’s died down, fly out to New York and find her. If she’s going to reject you, at least have her reject you to your face so you know for sure.”
A silence took over the room as Liam considered Drake’s words.
“At least think about it.” Drake finally spoke up.
Liam locked eyes with his friend. “Thank you, Drake”
Drake nodded and took his leave, not wanting to push any further. It was a decision Liam would need to make on his own.
As Liam walked to his room, the king’s quarters, he found himself more conflicted than ever. He thought that his announcement would leave him feeling lighter, more at ease with his new role as king. However after his talk with Drake, he had so much more to think about. Should he return to New York? Was it possible that he could still have a chance with Riley?
He needed to start focusing on his duties as king, but once again, he couldn’t get her out of his mind.
Book: TRR/TRH (events actually occur in TRH Book 1)
Pairing: Liam x MC (Riley); Bertrand x Savannah
Word Count: ~2500
Warning: innuendos; a little language; fluffiness
A/N: I usually enjoy writing fairly angsty TRR material, but when I started gearing up for this past week's @kingliamappreciationweek, I decided I really wanted to write something new that wasn't so dramatic. So, I started thinking about how Liam is a history buff... and if y'all don't know this by now, I'm from Texas, and the thought of that tall glass of water knowing about my home state's history...whew... Give me a moment... This is pure silliness. It's a re-write of Bertrand's bachelor party/Savannah's bachelorette party, and it's just... silly. It does not follow canon very well. But, I hope you still enjoy it! Happy KLAW 2023, friends!
A/N 2: This is my submission for @choicesflashfics week 30! I will be using prompt 3: "That's how the story goes." It will be in bold.
A/N 3: These characters and some of the plot belong to our dear friends Pixelberry. This was not truly pre-read or beta'd. Please excuse my errors.
~👑~
"Alright, lil' ladies with the beautiful bride-to-be!" A burly bartender with a thick drawl and matching beard comes out from behind the counter, making his way to Savannah Walker's bachelorette party.  Delivering a tray of golden caramel-colored shots, he piles each one high with decadent whipped cream. "Here ya go: six blow job shots."
Hana spews out her cocktail, covering her mouth with rosy cheeks.
"Mon dieu! Did–did he just say–"
"Like you don't know what that is, Kiara," Olivia snorts. "Drink up, poufiasse."
Savannah, Madeleine, and Riley cover their giggles, leaning into one another as they take their drinks.
"Wait," Hana holds up her hands as they prepare to toast their third round of shots. "Where's Penelope?"
"Oh, I'm here! I'm here!" She runs up, out of breath, her short hair and denim dress completely drenched.
"What on earth happened to you?" Riley starts grabbing napkins.
"I was checking in with my dog sitter, but the reception here is awful. Plus, it's raining like cats and dogs out—oooooo!" Penelope's eyes beam at the sight of the shots. "What are these?" She leans down to sniff before humming in approval.
"Blow jobs," Olivia smirks.
"Oh!" Penelope nods with curious fascination. "Leo said that about my lips one time–"
"He said what?" Madeleine raises an eyebrow.
"I know, I didn't understand what he meant either."
"No, that's not–nevermind."
"Hold up." Riley raises her hands to silence everyone before turning to Penelope. "Raining like cats and dogs?" She grimaces, glancing at Savannah. "I hope the guys are alright–"
"Gunther!"
The sudden boisterous voice of Drake Walker echoes through the dive bar, the doors swinging loudly, clapping up against the wooden walls. The large bartender turns, then brightens when he sees his old-time customer and friend coming into his establishment.
"Whiskers, is that you?"
The girls quietly glare at one another, mouthing the word 'whiskers.'
The two men grab each other's hands in a shake before pulling into a brotherly hug. Liam, Bertrand and Maxwell file in through the door, shaking droplets from their wet clothes.
"You guys!" Riley jumps up to greet her husband.
Savannah follows behind, wrapping her arms around Bertrand before brushing a kiss against his lips. "What are y'all doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Maxwell chuckles, throwing his thumb behind his shoulder.
"The campgrounds were rained out," Liam explains, combing his wife's hair behind her ear. "We thought we could stick it out as long as the creek didn't rise too high. But then," he shakes his head, chuckling, "the tents flooded. The truck almost got stuck in the mud."
"Our clothes and shoes are airing out back at the house," Bertrand states, watching his bride fix his wet hair.
"Wow," Olivia snickers, "so much for roughing it for your bachelor party, huh, Beaumont?"
"I beg your pardon," Bertrand stiffens in annoyance, "we almost died out there, duchess."
"It's water."
"Centimeters upon centimeters–"
"Imagine meters of it. Frozen–"
"Well," Riley interjects the budding feud, "I, for one, am happy you guys are out of the nasty weather." She holds her hand up to the bartender, "first round on the crown!"
"I like the sound of that," Maxwell chuckles.
"'First round on the crown'?" Liam whispers in his wife's ear, humored.
Riley scrunches up her nose, a mischievous grin crawling across her lips. "What can I say?" She giggles, slinking an arm around her husband’s waist. "I've been a queen for over a month, and I haven’t declared anything yet." She turns to her friends. "Let them drink booze!" She glances back at Liam, who's shaking his head at his tipsy wife. "What? I was channeling my inner Marie Antoinette."
"I… caught the reference," he narrows his eyes, gently placing a grip around Riley's neck. "I hope she’s not the inspiration of your own reign," he squeezes his fingers playfully, lowering his voice into a growl. "I'd hate for you to end up like her."
"You're not convincing me otherwise with your hand around my throat, my king." They knowingly snicker to one another, sharing a kiss.
"Okay, you newlyweds," Olivia snickers, rolling her eyes before turning to Drake. "So, um, Whiskers?"
He crosses his arms. "Yes…Red?" He collects a tray of glasses and a fifth of whiskey from Gunther to bring to the table.
"Curious minds want to know about this nickname."
"Awww, you’re thinking about me, Red?" She scoffs as he purposely bumps into her shoulder. "Maybe you'd rather a demonstration of why they call me Whiskers–"
"Drake Elmer!" Savannah scolds. "You're disgusting." She glances to the ladies. "Only Gunther calls him that, and the only reason he calls him that is because of Dad."
"Dad had a rule," Drake air quotes, "that I couldn't taste whiskey until I had whiskers." He nods towards the bartender, "Gunther there served me my first whiskey right after Dad's funeral–"
"Drakey!"  The syrupy voice of Savannah's ex-boyfriend bellows from across the room. "And he brought his royal round up!" The broad-shouldered red-head gives a curt bow, removing his Stetson as he notices Liam, switching to a British accent. "Your majesty."
Liam nods cordially before casually turning towards Riley. "What is it with you Americans thinking everyone in Europe talks with that accent?" Riley giggles under her breath, pinching her husband teasingly.
"Bert!" Chuck opens up his arms, pulling the duke into a tight, bear hug. "How's our groom? Come down here to flex your trivia knowledge?"
"Trivia?" Maxwell questions.
A sudden jolt of excitement hits Drake, his eyes widening as he looks to Gunther. "Is that tonight?"
"You bet yer' asses, Whiskers. $250 cash prize and a bottle of Jack to share."
"Whatd'ya say, Drakey? For old time's sake?" Chuck holds out his hand. Without giving it much thought, Drake clasps Chuck's calloused hand, pulling him into a quick hug. The men begin to hoot and grunt, clapping as they turn to join the rest of Chuck's friends in the corner.
But then Chuck stops, spinning on his heel. He glares at Bertrand before fixing a charming smirk to his mouth. "Where are my manners? Bert, the team is full, or else I'd invite you to join–"
"That's–" Bertrand clears his throat, "--quite alright, I assure you–"
"I mean," Chuck motions to Liam and Maxwell, "unless y'all wanted to make your own team." He glances over his shoulder, “Gunther, what’s tonight’s theme?
"Texas history, fellas," Gunther announces. "Trivia about the greatest fucking country in the world. Texas."
"Ahh. See?" Chuck swings out his arms, shrugging. "That’s how the story goes. Y'all better sit this one out."  With the deep clack of his cowboy boots, he adjusts his belt buckle before slowly strutting back to his seat.
Seeing the defeat in his face, Savannah runs a hand across Bertrand's chest before giving him a sweet kiss on the cheek. "Don't worry about it, hun," she softly croons, "that's not even your idea of fun anyway."
Bertrand grows rigid. "What do you mean? I like to have fun–"
"Of course, B, just… in other… ways–"
"I," he pulls away from his fiancée, pressing his finger into his chest, "am… the epitome of fun–"
"You're right, but–"
"I'm a crate full of apes!"
Riley looks over her shoulder to Liam, whispering, "Does he know that it's a barrel full of–?"
"Shhh," Liam softly hushes, "just let him go."
"You there!" Bertrand shouts to Gunther, causing everyone to freeze. "We would like to play."
"Uh, Bertrand? A word." Maxwell motions for his brother to join him as he stumbles over to Liam. "Are you crazy?" He whisper shouts. "These people already enjoy making fun of us. Why do you want to do this?"
"It's the principle of it all," Bertrand grows serious.
Maxwell sighs. "What do you think, Li?"
Liam looks up at Bertrand whose gaze is now attentive to Savannah. She laughs at something Kiara says, causing Bertrand's demeanor to slump a little more, as if each second with her reminds him he's not worthy of her.
Liam gets that.
"I think we should do it."
"See, Bertrand? Even Li–wait, what?" Maxwell's jaw drops. "You think this is a good idea?"
"It's just a game, right?" Liam winks handsomely. "Besides, I think Bertrand needs this."
"But Li… Texas trivia? Those guys reek of BBQ, football and leather."
“And we have survived how many secret coups attacks? Liam shrugs before patting the younger Beaumont on the back. "This could be fun."
Liam, Bertrand and Maxwell settle at a bar top table near four other teams, including Chuck and Drake's group.  As Gunther passes out electronic buzzers, he explains the rules. Chuck rubs his hands together in cocky delight as Bertrand wipes his brow with small drink napkins.
"Alright! Is everybody ready?" Gunther announces over a karaoke machine microphone. "Let's begin. When is Texas Independence Day?"
Chuck buzzes in with a proud, sarcastic snicker. "March 2nd."
"Correct!"
"Ahh, snaps, you guys," Maxwell hangs his head in his hands. "This was a bad idea."
"It's only been one question," Liam encourages.
"And we're already losing!" Maxwell whines, covering his eyes.
"Next question. Before her independence, Texas was governed by how many different nations?"
Liam hits the buzzer, turning to an unsuspecting Bertrand. "Psst… how many forks are in the traditional Cordonian place setting?"
Bertrand scoffs. "Six!" He barks out loud before realizing everyone is silent, staring at him.
"Correct!"
"Huh?" Maxwell looks up, a smile tugging at his lips.
"Way to go, Bertrand!" Riley and Savannah cheer as the other ladies clap and whistle.
"Alright," Gunther starts, "next question…"
The trivia night continues, back and forth, question for question. The other teams at the bar had opportunities to answer, but overall, Chuck and Drake's team remained in the lead.
But not by much.
The men from Cordonia gave them quite a run for their money, thanks to Liam and his wealth of knowledge. But although Liam knows the majority of the answers, he is yet to speak for the team; rather, he turns to Bertrand each time after hitting the buzzer, prompting him with a different question that possesses the same answer.
"Okay, folks," the bartender announces, "this is the last question. If this team," Gunther points to Bertrand, Liam and Maxwell, "chimes in and gets it right, it will tie the game, sending us into sudden death." The bar fills with cheers, patrons shouting with excitement and pounding their fists on the tables. "Here we go. The Texas Revolution started in what year?"
There's a slight hesitation, but finally Liam turns to Bertrand and states, "The ending of the Bavarian Regency of Greece." Bertrand furrows his eyebrows, but Liam gives him a reassuring nod as he hits the buzzer.
He clears his throat. "1835?"
Everyone freezes, a hush falling over the bar in anxious anticipation.
"Folks? We've got ourselves a tied game!"
Bertrand exhales heavily, closing his eyes. Liam pats him on the back while Maxwell cheers, tugging on his brother's shoulder.  The entire bar is in a fuss as Chuck and Drake stare confusingly at each other. Gunther gets back on the mic, and explains the sudden death round, which requires for each team to choose one member to represent them.
"You've got this, Li," Maxwell applauds, Bertrand smiling and nodding.
"I think… Bertrand should take this."
"Pardon my insolence, sir, but I do not find that to be a wise decision," Bertrand argues.
"I agree with my brother, Li," Maxwell nods, "you knew all those answers–"
"But Bertrand scored us those points," Liam counters, "he needs to put up a fight until the game is over. It's the principle, remember?"
Hearing Liam repeat his words, Bertrand grins, courage blooming in his chest. He looks to Savannah who is clapping, mouthing the words 'I'm so proud of you.'
"I'll do it."
Bertrand and Chuck step forward for the sudden death round, peering into each other's eyes. "Are we ready, gentlemen?" Gunther asks. Both men shake their heads yes, their gazes not leaving each other. "Let the best man win."
For a split second, Bertrand glances at his fiancée, and realizes he might not be the best man, but to her, he is. And no matter what, he's already won.
"Here's the question: made popular by an Alamo hero, this portable weapon that can kill and butcher game. Name the weapon–"
Chuck buzzes in. "The Swiss army knife." He smiles brightly, pulling out his own pocket blade and twirling it in victory.
Bertrand turns back to Liam and Maxwell, shaking his head. Maxwell mouths, 'that's okay! You did your best!' Bertand shakes his head more adamantly, but now he’s starting to grin.
"Actually," the bartender starts, "that’s incorrect, Chuck." Gunther turns towards Bertrand. "Do you have an answer, my foreign friend?"
Bertrand smirks. "You are referring to the Bowie knife."
A stillness hushes the crowd; Savannah and Riley anxiously wait, hands clasped with bated breath.
"That… is correct!"
The entire room erupts with shouts of praise and earth-shaking applause.  Several men remove their ten-gallon hats to whoop in honor of the winner, the women of the bachelorette party squealing in glee.
Drake shakes Bertrand's hand before pulling him into an endearing hug. Liam and Maxwell both clap the duke on the back in congratulations. Savannah quickly cuts in, throwing her arms around her fiancé as her lips crash into his. Gunther comes over with the prize, and shakes Liam's hand. Maxwell snatches the bottle of Jack and the cash, and holds it over his head like a trophy.  More shots and drinks are ordered, the night carrying on into a wild honky-tonk of a dance party.
Riley finds Liam, roping her arms around his neck as he secures his large hands to her waist.
"I'm so proud of you, partner," Riley attempts a drawl. Liam laughs, kissing her forehead as they begin to sway to the slow country beat. "Bertrand said that you actually never gave him any answers; you just… asked him questions that had the same answer"
Liam nods slowly, "Yep."
"Why?"
"Oh, my queen," he beams looking down at her, "it's the principle."
"The principle?" She cocks an eyebrow.
"A man wants to win a woman's heart."
"But Savannah loves him–"
"That's not the point," Liam counters. "A man wants to win her over… and over and over again. If I gave him the answers, that would've cheated him out of proving to her and to himself that he's worthy of her."
"Do you ever feel that way about me?" She croons.
A rosy hue swirls across Liam's cheeks. "More than you realize."
Riley presses a tender kiss to her husband’s chin before continuing their dance. "But… I gotta ask. When did you become so smart about Texas history?"
Liam chuckles. "I've been best friends with Drake Walker since I was 8 years old. We used to do our studies together, and… he was terrible at history."
"So?"
"So?" Liam stifles his toothy grin, licking his bottom lip. "Who do you think did his Texas history homework?"
"William Rys!"
She could feel it again.
Riley searched the crowded room for the source of goosebumps going up and down her body. Her dark eyes collided with a pair of hooded blue ones that never failed in making her heart hammer in her chest. That type of heated glance was one she noticed ever since she gave that one little word answer in front of the Statue of Liberty a couple of months earlier.
"Have you given any thoughts to what types of flowers you want for the wedding?" Hana asked, drawing Riley back into the conversation.
She pulled her attention away from Liam's steady gaze and refocused on the group of ladies surrounding her.
"Um, not really. With the unity tour and all, I've been letting Madeleine and Regina make all the wedding plans."
Kiara's eyes widened. "You must trust them a great deal to not even suggest which ones you'd prefer."
"I think for my wedding, I would love to have a bouquet of purple flowers." Penelope added with a dreamy sigh. "I know with my duchy's colors I should have them anyway, but I just adore that color!"
Riley was already tuning them out. Honestly, she could care less about flowers and decorations. All she worried about was finally being united with the man she was hopelessly in love with. They could get married right now in the clothes they were in with no flowers or anything special at all and she'd be thrilled.
She might as well save Regina and Madeleine time and effort to try to get her involved in the wedding planning. Giving them free reign made them happy and saved her from numerous headaches of having to pretend she was interested.
"Would you excuse me for a moment?" She asked the group.
They all smiled at her and continued to discuss how their own dream weddings would look.
Riley began to edge her way through the party guests. She'd last seen Liam stuck in conversation with Godfrey and Hakim near one of the bars. She decided to save him and perhaps find somewhere they could be alone.
She inwardly frowned over that. It was odd that she was with a man who could be so passionate in private yet hold back as if they weren't really together in front of others. Yes, he escorted her everywhere, but she was the one to initiate any type of affection in public. She was the one to kiss him without worry of who was looking.
She didn't doubt for a second that Liam wanted her or else she would be back in New York still searching for Mr. Right. Though, would it kill him to show everyone they knew just how much he did?
It wasn't like she expected some epic, make you melt kiss every time they were near one another. She wouldn't mind some sort of affectionate peck or his arm around her instead of just his hand at the small of her back.
She jumped when she felt his hand in that very spot.
"Enjoying yourself?" He asked with a tender smile.
"Of course." She replied. "Who doesn't love another good party?"
Liam chuckled in response. "We have been forced to attend a lot of these, haven't we?"
"A little." She grinned at him. "I'll be glad when we begin enjoying evenings alone for a change."
"So will I."
Riley felt heat flash over her as his fingers brushed the cutout at the back of her dress. He seemed to linger on her exposed skin.
"Would you like to slip away for a moment?" He whispered
"For?" Riley teased him.
Liam's smirk caught her attention.
"I think you know the purpose of my wanting to steal you away from here."
"Is it to kiss me?"
"Always." He replied.
"I see."
Liam's eyes narrowed somewhat at the sound of disappointment he could detect.
"What's wrong, my love?"
"Nothing." She lowered her eyes from his. "Where should we go?"
Liam grasped her wrist when she began to pull away from him.
"Riley?"
She grimaced then finally said what was on her mind.
"Liam, you never kiss me in front of others."
"Excuse me?"
She had to fight from rushing to reassure him. If they were going to spend the rest of their lives together, then it was only fair that he understood what she needed.
Perhaps it was because the majority of their relationship was so different from every previous one she'd been in. After all, how many people had to compete the first go around to simply be with someone then turn around and be their secret lover before getting engaged? Weird didn't even begin to cover it.
"I can feel your eyes on me wherever we go." Riley explained. "I know what you want and I want it too."
Liam's brow furrowed as he listened without interruption. His hand loosened and fell away from her wrist.
"We're together now. Really together. We don't have to hide our feelings anymore from the world." She huffed in irritation. "We're getting married in a few weeks!"
When he remained silent, she softly groaned.
"What I'm trying to say is that you can kiss me whenever you want, regardless of who's around."
She forced herself to look up at him to see how he was taking this. Maybe it was some kind of royal protocol that she wasn't aware of yet that kept him from showing affection in public. Or, what if he wasn't into PDA?
Madeleine certainly had been the one to initiate the kisses to the cheek when she was engaged to Liam. Riley guessed that was how it was going to be from now on.
She believed she could live with that as long as he was still affectionate in private. She knew she shouldn't wish for something that probably wasn't that big of a deal.
But...
She needed him to show the world she was his choice. She needed them to know she was the only one he wanted over and over again. She wanted everyone to know the type of love they had for one another.
They weren't getting married because of some archaic law so he could meet the requirements to be king. They were doing so because they were in love and couldn't imagine spending another single moment without the other by their side.
Was it too much to ask for a spontaneous kiss every now and then?
"You wouldn't mind my doing so?" Liam asked.
Her eyes flew to his.
"Kissing me?"
He nodded.
She thought he was heartbreakingly adorable in his uncertainty. Didn't he realize how crazy in love she was with him?
"Liam, you can kiss me anytime, anywhere." Riley nervously gripped her hands together. "I would love it if you kissed me whenever you felt like it."
The slow smile forming on his lips drew her attention.
"You are giving me far too much power, my love."
Chills of delight ran down her spine. His seductive tone slipping out right now was enough to make her launch herself into his arms alone. It took every bit of her willpower to see what he would do next.
He raised one hand to her cheek. His thumb brushed along her bottom lip drawing an involuntary gasp from her. His eyes raised briefly to hers before settling once more upon her mouth.
In the blink of an eye, he had his free hand slide around her waist, drawing her flush to his body. Desire burned in the deep blue depths of his eyes over the feel of her being right where he wanted.
Riley thought she would collapse from the anticipation. Her heart pounded in her ears when he slowly lowered his mouth towards hers.
There was no gentle brush of his lips to check to see if she was truly willing to be kissed. Instead, his mouth covered hers in blatant ownership. His tongue parted her lips while his hand wrapped around her hair, keeping her at the perfect angle for his ravishment.
His arm around her waist locked in place, daring her to even think about moving, as he drew a whimper from her.
Her arms hung loosely at her sides until it hit her that this was truly happening. She wrapped them around his waist and surrendered completely. Her last coherent thought was she hoped everyone was seeing this.
Liam's hand tightened around her hair in response. He continued to devour her, finally giving himself what he'd craved from the first moment he ever saw her.
Perhaps a part of him had still been in disbelief that he could truly win her and her love. But now that he knew she wanted him to touch her as much as he did, that she needed it, it set off a part of his soul he wasn't aware existed.
He could care less who saw them. He didn't mind it for a second. His entire life was paraded before the world. He was more than willing to show them his favorite part of existing.
And it had everything to do with the woman returning his kiss with the power to make his skin deliciously burn with desire.
After one last caress of his tongue, Liam lifted his head to see the effect his kiss had over her.
Riley stared at him in wonder. Her lips were still parted as if ready for another kiss. Her breaths were quick little gasps while her cheeks were rosy from the encounter. Her eyes kept returning to his mouth as if in awe of the power it had over her body.
"Now that," she smiled at him, "was a kiss."
Liam laughed, leaning down to tenderly kiss her.
She hummed her approval of such a response to her observation.
"I like that one too." Riley admitted, her smile growing bigger with each brush of his lips.
"How about this one?" He whispered, gently biting down upon her earlobe.
He felt her hands drift down to grip his rear in response.
"I like it." She breathed, her eyes closing as he dotted slow kisses along her jawline. "I love everything you do to me."
"Good." Liam's voice deepened, his lips hovering over hers once more. "Because I don't intend to ever stop."
