wip wednesday!
today is the beginning of a sequel i said i wasn't going to write and might not finish anyway. but have nong time travel spider-man point meme pt2. also, this is the last time i try to write a conversation in which there are meant to be eight (8) active participants.
cw: implied dissociation, mentioned character death
snippet under the cut
The aftermath of Kim’s murders has the three of them locked into what looks like a private office. Macau’s face is still bloody, but it looks like the nosebleed has at least stopped. Chay can feel the bruise forming on his knuckles. Kim is pacing like a caged tiger, shoulders tense. They confiscated his gun, and a number of other weapons Chay didn’t even realize he had on him. Then they took his shoes and his belt and his jacket, leaving him in his jeans and an oversized white t-shirt. Chay knows Kim was a good fighter, but the bodyguards are acting a little ridiculous about it if you asked him. They didn’t take Macau’s belt. “Look, Kim,” Macau starts from the table he’s laying across. Kim stops abruptly, turning to stare at him. “I’m glad our dads are dead— it needed to happen. Now we need to figure out how the hell to convince our brothers of that.” There’s a bit of blood splattered on Kim’s shirt. Chay resolves not to tell him that. “And we need to let them know about my mom,” Chay adds, because like hell he’s leaving his mom in Korn’s prison now that the man is dead. Kim’s gaze swings to Chay. “That part’s easy. We just need to wait for Chan to get in here to interrogate us.” His voice is carefully modulated, and Chay scrambles to his feet. Kim is a lot closer to freaking out than he expected. “Okay, but how long is that going to be?” Macau counters. “Because Chan is going to be directing a lot of the clean-up.” Before Chay or Kim can reply, the door swings open, revealing all of their older brothers, led by none other than Chan. “Not long, apparently,” Chay snarks as he moves to stand shoulder to shoulder with Kim. Macau rolls off the table behind them, coming up to stand next to Chay. “Boys,” Chan says, voice flat. “Please. Have a seat.” He gestures at the conference table Macau had been lounging on. Chan sits at the head of the table, Vegas and P’Kinn on either side of him. P’Khun is pale-faced and silent, which freaks Chay out more than anything else. Kim sits across from Chan and Macau claims the seat next to his brother. Porsche hasn’t sat down, instead standing behind P’Khun with a hand on his gun. His face softens when Chay catches his eye, and he gestures for the seat by P’Khun. Chay considers it, but opts to stay standing instead. P’Khun is kinda freaking him out right now. “Now,” Chan starts. “Kim. Please tell us what happened.” Kim opens his mouth, and then closes it, eyes darting around the room. “You were all there,” Macau says, when it becomes clear that Kim isn’t going to say anything. “Chay punched me, we ran in arguing, and while we were distracting everyone, Kim shot Pa and Uncle Korn. Then you locked us in here.” “But why?” P’Kinn’s voice is smaller than Chay has ever heard it. Macau is silent at that, looking back at Kim, who still looks about one wrong word away from shattering. Fuck it, Chay thinks, and steps forward. “Because it had to be done.” “And who the fuck are you?” Vegas asks, voice hoarse. “I’m Namphueng Kittisiwat’s son,” Chay says, and watches Chan’s eyes widen comically. “By the way, could I go see her? Someone should probably tell her that her captor is dead.” “Chay, what the fuck?” Porsche says, hand dropping from his gun to stare at him. “Ma died in a car crash. I was there.” “Yeah, that was a lie, right Chan?” Chay grins at Chan, who is now looking vaguely constipated.
thanks for reading!

Ep 11 reactor reaction hot takes under the read more because I am tired and apparently air these now.
Watching people react to Ep 11 of GAP the Series can be so very, very difficult because it shows just how much so many people don't understand - or want to understand! - Sam or where she's coming from or the trauma and abuse and love for her grandmother she grew up with, nor understand - or want to understand! - Mon or where she's coming from as the selfless, overwhelmed, desperately in love young woman she is.
Some people focus so heavily on Sam not being able to go against her grandmother or being engaged to Kirk while still wanting Mon in her life (and that she has been engaged for the majority of the show so never should have started anything with Mon even though it is so clear that Kirk has never been anything or a 'real' option to her), or even that Mon is so stupid for agreeing to be Sam's 'side piece' and deserves so much more and should just leave, right then and there (and double down that Mon is and has been in the wrong for pursuing an engaged woman in the first place in the same breath), as if giving up everything with Sam so easily is who Mon is.
And, look, I understand personal opinions. I do. And I do understand some of these moral stances, don't get me wrong! But there's only such a limit I can take before I just get so frustrated. Because how these people just so flatly approach this episode and tear down the characters for both their actions - or inactions - just illustrate to me how much they don't understand the story, the characters, the culture, or pretty much anything in favor of superimposing their own opinions on the characters and situation as if Mon and Sam are or should be anything like the people/reactors themselves instead of who they actually are and have been built up as on the show up until that point.
What I'm saying is, you can criticize the episode and the characters all you want. Call out Mon deserving more! Because she does. Call out Sam being selfish in her heartbroken desperation! Because she is. But to get so angry and verbally so in such a high and mighty tone deaf way that erases any of the nuance in favor of pure censure? Just continuing to complain and lambast the characters and everything the whole episode without even trying to understand or examine it? That's when I get so uncomfortable and riled. Have (valid) criticisms or critiques but please also have some critical thought, too!
Sure, maybe I'm being a little unreasonable here because I do watch these shows wanting to understand the characters and look below the surface, but I don't care! I honestly just cannot care anymore if this opinion of mine is uncharitable. It's just another way I'm just so tired with some of the takes I've seen of this show.
So I guess that's my own personal opinion that others might get uncomfortable with and frustrated and riled at. But that's okay. At least I know it's subjective and my own personal (high horse) opinion! 😀

I figured I might as well make this a little blog series, since there will be more to address in upcoming episodes.
Before we dive into the nitty gritty... I really want to acknowledge the production value of The Loyal Pin and all the hard work that went into making it. The characters, the sets, the wardrobe, the dialect... everything was an honest representation of a historically accurate period drama. The first episode was perfectly curated to establish the series' universe. I was really impressed with Becky in particular because I've been following her since GAP, and I know how much she struggled with reacquainting herself to the language when she moved back home to Thailand from New Zealand. To have the added pressure of maintaining a period accurate dialect was not easy for her. Freen has proudly commented on how hard Becky worked to really learn the script... and it shows. Well done, Bec Bec!!!
Let's Talk Thai Culture...
We'll start off by breaking down Thai Royal Language Terminology (คำราชาศัพท์)
Tumblr media
The Savettavarit Royal House Consists of 1) His Royal Highness, The Prince Thai Royal Title: พระองค์ชาย (pronounced phra-ong chai) reserved for direct male descendants of the king
2) Her Serene Highness, Princess Alisa Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a non-inherited title for being the wife of a prince (abbr. M.C.)
3) His Serene Highness, Prince Anantavut Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าชาย (pronounced mom-jao chai) a title for male children of a prince, meaning secondary prince (abbr. M.C.)
4) His Serene Highness, Prince Anon Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าชาย (pronounced mom-jao chai) a title for male children of a prince, meaning secondary prince (abbr. M.C.)
5) Her Serene Highness, Princess Anilaphat Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a title for female children of a prince, meaning secondary princess (abbr. M.C.)
The Kasidit Noble Family Consists of 1) Her Serene Highness, Princess Pattamika Thai Royal Title: หม่อมเจ้าหญิง (pronounced mom-jao ying) a non-inherited title for being the 'adopted' sister of the prince (abbr. M.C.)
2) Lady Pilanthita Thai Noble Title: หม่อมราชวงศ์ (pronounced mom rat-cha-wong) a title assumed by 'commoner' children of หม่อมเจ้า (M.C.), meaning their ancestry can be traced back to a king (abbr. M.R.) The Common Address: You'll hear certain characters use the term ท่าน (pronounced than). It is the formal address between members of royalty/nobility to acknowledge certain members of higher rank. It essentially means "Your Highness". For example, regarding Princess Pattamika, Pin addresses her 'adoptive' mother (f.) as ท่านหญิง (than ying) and Anil refers to her 'aunt' as ท่านอา (than ah*). *อา (ah) is how one would refer to their father's younger sibling
Another term you might have heard was เพคะ (pronounced phe-kha). It is less formal and used to express familiarity. Both Prik and Lady Pin use this response to address Princess Anil as "Your Highness". Princess Alisa can also be heard using this phrase in conversation with, and to respond to, her husband.
She is considered a Noble 'Commoner', so Lady Pin would be formally addressed as คุณหญิง (khun ying) given her title. However, Pin is depicted as being more reserved and adherent to social structure. This is very telling of her social class amongst the higher ranking royal family who took her in. Pin has a lot more to lose than Anil should she stray from class expectations, and they did a wonderful job establishing that in the first episode. (I'm sure this will come into play even more as the characters age up... and I'm very much looking forward to it.)
Lower ranked servants/attendants (บ่าว - bao) can be heard using the term เจ้า (jao) to indicate their showing of respect when addressing someone of superior status.
Pronunciation and Formality: Without even knowing the Thai language, you might have noticed that the characters heavily enunciate their dialect when speaking. It's an accurate depiction of a "prim" and "proper" royal family. Even how Anil addresses her two brothers is very formal: พี่ชายรอง (meaning second eldest brother) and พี่ชายใหญ่ (meaning eldest brother). If you're going to do a period drama... this is how it's done!!!
Should we discuss the Thai dishes highlighted in this episode? ...Why not?
Tumblr media
สองมาลีลอยแก้ว (pronounced song mali loy kaew) is a Thai dessert comprised of watermelon and mamuang dong (มะม่วงดอง - pickled mangoes). The fruit is carved into floral shapes and arranged to "float" in sugar syrup with ice, hence its name... which literally translates to 'Two Flowers Floating in Glass'.
Tumblr media
นำ้ปลาหวาน (pronounced nam pla whan) is a Thai dipping sauce comprised of palm sugar, fermented fish sauce, shallots and chili. It's usually paired with firm and tart fruits... like green mangoes. (It's an acquired taste hehe)
Tumblr media
The last thing I wanted to mention are Thai night markets and fairs (ตลาดกลางคืน). They are still hugely popular for social outings and, like the series has shown, are comprised of various stalls offering street food, clothes, accessories, attractions, etc. They're very popular amongst tourists, as well.
I hope this wasn't too overwhelming with information... but I just wanted to be as thorough as possible because this series is shaping up to be, what is essentially, a love letter to Thai tradition.

Kim doesn't know why he checks this app. He only has it because Khun called him sad and told him he should put himself out there more.
Kim doesn't really care that he's never been in a relationship; it sounds exhausting and he'd much rather spend his time making music. But if it makes his brother worry less...
But so far, pretty much everyone either likes his first photo (boring) or comments on his looks (tiring). A few have mentioned music, but this cute guy is the only one so far who's known exactly what guitar Kim is playing, or at least has put in the effort to research it first.
Kim appreciates that kind of thing.
He hesitates. He told himself he wouldn't match with anyone... He doesn't have time for small talk and generic, boring dates... but Khun has been texting him recently asking if he's met anyone yet. Maybe if he goes on one date, it'll get Khun off his back for a little while.
Kim taps his screen, opening up Porchay's profile and scrolling through the rest of it.
It looks like his interest in music is genuine. He's also linked his Instagram to his profile. Kim clicks through and scrolls some more, stopping on a video of Porchay performing on what looks like a small stage in a university hall.
His voice is nice. Warm.
...
Kim navigates back to the dating app and before he properly registers what he's doing, he matches with Porchay.
He can always unmatch him later.
Kim and Chay talk about music and then video games and family etc regularly for the next several days until Chay manages to convince Kim to go on a date with him at a local dive bar with live music.
It takes several months before Kim folds and lets Khun and Chay meet.
Companion to this post.

4 MINUTES EPISODE 5 – FLASHBACKS, WATCHALONGS AND AN OMINOUS CULTURAL TOUCHPOINT
They're doing a great job with this show and I'm now a newly-minted fan of Director Ning Bhanbhassa Dhubthien, whose confident hand has been assuredly steering the proceedings in 4 Minutes. 🤩
Ep.5 has irrefutably confirmed that the 4 Minutes of the title really is a reference to the four-minute limbo after the heart stops beating (4 Minutes Sultrier Version Ep.5 timestamp 42:20).
So the layers are now being slowly peeled back and more was revealed to us, shedding flashes of light on the convoluted storyline. All is still not clear yet, but some ideas are starting to take shape.
OK, this is mostly guesswork but anyway–
It's quite firmly implanted in my mind now that we're seeing a lot of Great's four minutes of brain activity post cardiac arrest. But what's been percolating in my mind since the last episode is that that we might also be seeing Tyme's four-minute post-death flashback, especially since we also saw him getting shot in the opening sequence of Episode 1.
And so those scenes and sequences shown from Tyme's point of view may also be him re-living his own past experiences (concurrently with Great's?) even as his own heart has stopped.
This thought was triggered by Ep.4's revelation that people who find themselves in the Four-Minute Zone get to enter some sort of common waiting room, and they get to meet others in there too:
Tumblr media
And the vibes I got watching this scene reminded me so much of Great and Tyme's conversation at their lakeside glamping in the trailer, which we got to see fully in Episode 5:
Tumblr media
I don't think this is Great and Tyme on a romantic date in the real world. Serene, other-worldly and seemingly divorced from reality – this locale has them talking about how beautiful it all is, and Great even says "I wanna stay here forever" before admitting "But we probably can't."
It really looks like this is Great and Tyme finding each other in the four-minute post-death netherworld, with the art gallery meeting room switched up for a more romantic getaway instead (that Great got to choose). And with the clock ticking ominously down to 11:04...
There's also this little snippet from the trailer:
Tumblr media
Tyme is locked out of a room, and he calls out for Great even as his surroundings are all sepia-toned and soft-focused.
I think this is 4 Minutes showing us that Tyme's four minutes will be up before Great's are, and Tyme will swept back to the real world – or away to another world – while Great is left behind. (Or maybe it's the other way around?)
Ominously, we are not shown Great's rapture and release from four-minute limbo – as much as I want a Happily Ever After for the two newest pretty boys who have won my heart, 4 Minutes is making no such promises. So I suppose we should prepare ourselves for the possibility that while Great (or Tyme) may well be waking up from a four-minute hiatus and returning to the world of the living at 11:04 – it's not a guarantee that the other will rejoin him there when his own four minutes tick down. 😬💔😭
Anyway, I've refrained from commenting on the numeral 4 as a symbol of death, because this is more a thing in Chinese culture rather than Thai (and up until Ep.5 Thai-Chinese references were at most only faintly present in 4 Minutes).
Well that certainly changed, at 4 Minutes Sultrier Version Ep.5 timestamp 34:50:
Tumblr media
The temple where Ep.1 accident victim Khun Manee goes to hire a hitman is unmistakably Chinese. The mafia don she engages with also speaks in Teochew Chinese (I think) at timestamp 36:25.
And so when her siam si/เซียมซี fortune stick shows up with the numeral 4, the link with death is all but confirmed (the word for death in many Chinese dialects like Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and Hakka sounds similar to the word for the numeral 4, although there are tonal differences). No surprises then, that the Chinese don tells Manee "Someone's probably going to die."
This had a Thai parallel in Ep.1, when the clock in Khun Manee's hospital room showed us it was thirteen minutes past 1 o'clock in the afternoon:
Tumblr media
As portentous as this might appear to occidental minds, it's not just the Western superstition surrounding the number 13 that's threading darker undertones into the fabric of this scene.
In Thai culture (where belief in the supernatural abounds), the numeral 13 is also sometimes considered ill-omened because it looks rather like the Thai word for ghost – ผี – flipped onto its side, adding to the general sense of foreboding in Ep.1.
And for me, this was not meant to foreshadow all the deaths taking place in subsequent scenes and episodes, although it isn't inappropriate as a device.
We have been seeing ghosts in this series – Great, Lukwa, possibly Tyme, and whoever else who found themselves caught in the spectral dimension that exists between life and death in the universe of 4 Minutes.
‌And this may be just my fevered 4 Minutes obsessed brain overthinking things again, but in this light – the paired thirteen (13:13) is likely a reference to the ghostly half-lives of our protagonist couple Great and Tyme, getting to share a precious (final?) four minutes together in that twilight zone between the world of the living and the great beyond.
But it seems more than likely that they will be yanked apart when their four minutes are up. 😧 So will that separation be forever? I wait on tenterhooks to see.
P.S. Links to my own fan theory as to what it all might possibly mean:
And some more supporting information, embedded in the show:

I have decided that it's now canon that when Pete figures out where they're gonna live after Vegas gets out of the hospital, that the house keys he gives Vegas are on this keychain.
Did my VegasPete loving ass just buy a $12 pack of keychains just because there was a hedgehog?
Yes, yes I did.

A bit more on Tattoo and what he appreciates in a person.
There was the Noticing where Tattoo had the chance to see Aran handle a situation competently despite being quite frantic just a moment before. This is a tiny building block for Tattoo's characterisation as someone who appreciates the ability to calm one's emotional response when it threatens to take over.
We get another look at this aspect of his in ep 9, when Rosé asks Jack to be her partner. Now, Tattoo does say 'oh I wish she'd asked me'. But. This is his reaction to the actual proposal:
Tumblr media
Not impressed nor interested, just something to get over with. But this?
Tumblr media
This is his response to Rosé being vulnerable ("Did I do something wrong, do I need to change?"), but smiling through her tears and keeping her head up ("Even if I'm not okay, I have to be okay"). She is clearly heartbroken but carries it well, although in her usual silly manner. That is what Tattoo is admiring here: acting calm while emotional.
Now, obviously we see Aran having trouble controlling his emotions in several episodes. In fact, the first thing we hear anyone say to a named character on the show is "Khun Aran, please stay calm", which Aran decidedly does not do. And this is by no means the last time we hear people saying this. However, I think this is part of what fascinates Tattoo to begin with. Tattoo's engineer brain is always mapping how things work; and he simply cannot understand Aran's emotional expressiveness. He's been trying to figure him out, likely involuntarily at first, unimpressed by the rollercoaster. He can't help but wonder - we see him comment on it to Hoy, trying to decide whether Arans "sick, or maybe bipolar" (not that that's how bpd works); and later he tells Aran that he can't understand his 1-minute-4-emotions mind. He wants to understand this creature who is part of his life now.
Also, Aran is on his way to controlling his emotions. He already had practice in gritting his teeth and being polite through a forced smile, but he is now moving towards being able to handle and calm his emotional response. This is indeed the task that the Moon card sets out for him. (And in the later episodes we've gotten several scenes where it is in fact Aran who is asking another person to calm down, as a reversal of earlier.)
There is a change, and Tattoo has been there to help him with this change. We see an example of this in the abovementioned ep 9 scene, when Tattoo runs to Aran after leaving Joke at the mansion, and calms him down with just a touch and a phrase so that he can keep giving directions. This is very likely another thing Tattoo appreciates in Aran, his ability to learn without holding on to any sense of superiority. (And probably also his ready willingness to support Tattoo in ways big and small. And his straightforward expression whether happy or frustrated. And the way Aran expresses admiration for Tattoo's intelligence and ability. And, uh, he is pretty cute, and silly and sensitive and easy to entertain and a good pillow and fun to bicker with, and he thinks Tattoo is cool, and funny, and smart and interesting, and. Well. There's lots of reasons when you get into Tattoo's head and take a look around!)
